the incredibles

With the release of its 20th film, "Incredibles 2," in June, Pixar continued a streak of box-office domination that began with the release of its first film, "Toy Story," in 1995.

This week, "Incredibles 2" became the highest-grossing Pixar film at the worldwide box office, surpassing a record set by 2010's "Toy Story 3."

Though each Pixar release has made the studio a substantial net profit, not every movie has lived up to the success of some of the company's true blockbusters.

Referencing Box Office Mojo's and The Numbers' sales and production statistics for each film, we've ranked all 20 Pixar movies so far by their global net profit.

We subtracted production budgets from worldwide box-office grosses to estimate which Pixar film has been the most financially successful. (This calculation doesn't take inflation or additional costs like marketing into account, so actual, adjusted net profits would vary, and increase for older films.)

Read on to see which Pixar film came out on top:

  • Business Insider found the median income for full-time, year-round workers in each state among three generational age groups: millennials, Gen Xers, and baby boomers.
  • The gap in median income between millennials and baby boomers ranged from the older generation making 25% more than millennials in DC to 91% more than millennials in Alaska.

Across the US, older workers tend to have a higher income than younger workers.

Business Insider analyzed individual-level data from the US Census Bureau's 2016 "American Community Survey" available from the Minnesota Population Center's Integrated Public Use Microdata Series and found the median total income among full-time, year-round employed workers in each state for three generational age groups: millennials (age 20 to 35 in 2016), Gen Xers (age 36 to 51), and baby boomers (age 52 to 70).

Overall, older workers tended to have higher incomes than younger workers. In all 50 states and Washington, DC, the median millennial made less money than the median Gen Xer or baby boomer, and in most states boomers earned more than their Gen X counterparts.

The gap in median salary between millennials and baby boomers ranged from the median boomer making 25% more than the median millennial in DC to a whopping 91% gap between the median millennial and median boomer in Alaska.

tentrr camping rental app 27

The hardest part of going camping might be getting started. The upfront cost forces newbies to shell out for a tent, sleeping bags, and other gear. There are 13,000 public campsites in North America to choose from, and no definitive review site vetting them.

It can be overwhelming.

Tentrr wants to take the hassle out of camping. Launched in 2016, the "Airbnb for camping" lets users find and book upscale campsites on private land.

The company has just announced it's opening 10 sites in the San Francisco Bay Area — its first expansion outside the East Coast. The majority of sites will be in Santa Cruz and Sonoma Counties, with another 50 Bay Area campsites in the pipeline for spring 2019.

We talked to investment banker turned startup founder Michael D'Agostino on why Tentrr could be the future of weekend getaways.

SEE ALSO: I tried Snap's snazzy camera glasses over my wedding week to see if they live up to the hype. Here's the verdict

The mission of Tentrr is simple. "We want you to be able to run around naked and enjoy nature as you wanted to when you were a kid ... without scaring the neighbor," D'Agostino told Business Insider.

Tentrr has nearly 500 campsites across the Northeast. They sit on privately owned land, where guests can relax and recharge in peace.

Each rental comes equipped with a canvas tent on a large wood platform, a queen-sized air mattress, two Adirondack chairs, a fire pit, cookware, and a portable toilet.

Google Home Mini

The Google Home is in millions of households.

Earlier this year, Google revealed that it had sold more than one Home smart speaker device every second since October. According to our own calculations, that means Google sold at least 6.8 million Home devices during the last holiday season — and they seem to have been selling at a steady clip since.

Google sells three Home devices right now: The $50 Google Home Mini, the $130 Google Home, and the $400 Google Home Max, all of which have Google's artificially-intelligent Assistant built in.

So now that the Google Home has spread, it helps to know what you can actually do with them. Some features are obvious — like asking for the weather — but others aren't so obvious.

Here are 17 of the coolest things you can do with your Google Home.

SEE ALSO: Your Amazon Echo can now send text messages for you — here's how to do it

1. Play white noise while you fall asleep.

I prefer rain sounds to standard white noise, so I usually say "Hey Google, play the sound of rain." The device obliges with a steady downpour.

The sound usually lasts until I fall asleep, but if you want to be sure it turns off at a certain point, you can also set a sleep timer.

2. Broadcast something to every Google Home device in your house at once.

If you have more than one Google Home device in your home, you can broadcast to every single one simultaneously, sort of like an intercom.

If you say, "OK Google, broadcast that it's dinner time," each device will ring a dinner bell. You can also say, "OK Google, broadcast that it's time for school."

The broadcast feature even works when you're not in the house. Saying, "OK Google, broadcast I'm on my way home" will trigger the devices inside your house.

3. Control your smart home.

At this point, Google Assistant can control more than 1,500 smart-home products from more than 100 brands like LG, Whirlpool, GE, and Nest. You can ask your Google Home to dim the lights, change the temperature, turn on a kettle or microwave, or even start your Roomba.

burning man 2017

  • Burning Man is an annual, nine-day gathering in the Nevada desert.
  • It's held the week prior to and including Labor Day weekend each year. It includes artistic performances, installations, music, and a lot of partying.
  • No money is exchanged at Burning Man, so participants are expected to bring food, supplies, shelter, and anything else they might need.
  • The cost of tickets in 2018 ranged from $425 to $1,200.

In order to truly understand Burning Man, the annual summer event held in the middle of the Nevada desert, you probably just have to go.

The nine-day gathering of 70,000 people includes wild costumes, art installations, spontaneous musical performances, and lots of partying.

Burning Man closed with the burning of the Temple Galaxia, a 65-foot wooden structure that symbolizes how the fabric of the universe connects all living beings. For the burning of the temple, people created memorials for deceased loved ones and past relationships, according to the Reno Gazette Journal.

With 2018's Burning Man event having ended on September 3, Business Insider has compiled answers to some of your most burning questions about Burning Man.

What is Burning Man?

Burning Man is an annual, nine-day gathering in the desert that includes artistic performances, installations, and music — but don't call it a festival.

"Burning Man is not a festival. Burning Man is a community. A temporary city. A global cultural movement based on 10 practical principles," the official website reads.

A few of these principles include radical inclusion ("Anyone may be a part of Burning Man"), gifting, decommodification (no money passes hands at the festival), radical self-reliance and self-expression, leaving no trace (" We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather"), and participation.

Burning Man is organized by a non-profit organization called the Burning Man Project.

When is Burning Man?

The end-of-summer event takes place each year during the week leading up to and including Labor Day weekend, according to the official website.

The 2018 dates are August 26 through September 3.

Where does Burning Man take place?

The event is held at a temporary metropolis called Black Rock City in the remote Black Rock Desert — called "the playa"— in Nevada.

Black Rock City is made up of tents and RVs brought by participants.

best toaster oven

The Insider Pick:

  • Toaster ovens serve as a miniature version of the traditional oven and they offer an array of functions, including broiling, roasting, toasting, and convection cooking.

  • The Cuisinart Chef’s Convection Toaster Oven is the best toaster oven you can buy because it's easy to use, heats quickly, bakes evenly, and comes with all the accessories you need, including a pizza stone.

Living in environmentally-conscious times, it may feel like a waste heating up a full-size oven just to make a small meal. And, if you have a small kitchen, a traditional oven may not be an option. This is where toaster ovens can help you save on space and utility bills.

Even if you have a large kitchen, a toaster oven is useful for the heavy-cooking holidays, such as Thanksgiving when you need to cook and warm several dishes at different temperatures at the same time.

There are almost as many heating options available as there are brands. When buying a toaster oven, you also want to consider how much space you will have. Most models will fit between your counter and the bottom of your cabinets. If space is at a premium in your dwelling, be sure to pay special attention to the dimensions of the toaster ovens you are interested in.

We examined the ratings and reviews of hundreds of top users and experts to see which toaster ovens offer the best value for your money, do what they say they can do, and perform consistently. Read on to learn all about our top picks.

Here are the best toaster ovens you can buy:

Updated on 09/04/2018 by Malarie Gokey: Added the Cuisinart Chef's Convection Toaster Oven after testing.

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best toaster oven overall

Why you'll love it: The Cuisinart Chef's Convection Toaster Oven bakes evenly, is easy to use, and comes with all the pans you need to get baking.

Cuisinart’s Chef’s Convection Toaster Oven is the best toaster oven we've tested. Not only is it easy to use, it also bakes evenly, has plenty of helpful settings, and comes with helpful accessories like a pizza stone, two baking racks, and two baking pans.

With its 0.95-cubic-foot capacity, the oven can hold a 13-inch pizza, a 9-by-13-inch baking pan, a whole chicken, and nine slices of bread. Even though it holds a lot, the toaster oven itself isn't terribly huge. It measures 21 by 17 by 11 inches in size, plus, it looks good in any kitchen, thanks to its brushed stainless steel finish.

The Chef's Toaster Oven has 15 cooking functions, including several helpful pre-sets for foods you'll make a lot like toast, pizza, and sandwiches. It also has a speed convection setting for when you want to get cooking really fast. The 1800 watt oven heats up very quickly and Cuisinart's Exact Heat sensor ensures that the temperature is accurate.

We never had to wait very long for it to reach baking temperatures of 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and it toasts bread perfectly in a matter of minutes. We used the toaster oven to bake pain aux raisin, cuernitos, homemade pizza, and cinnamon rolls. We also warmed up French onion soup, broiled fish, and cooked meals in it for a month to really put it through the test, and it passed with flying colors.

The interior light makes it easy to see what's going on inside behind the big glass door, so you can monitor the progress of your toast, pizza, croissants, or what have you. We found the light particularly helpful when we were still learning the oven's settings.

The baking rack automatically slides out when you open the door, making it easy to pull out your hot baked goods. The interior was easy to clean, too, because of the pull-out crumb tray. All these little features add up to make a great toaster oven that's easy to use.

We're not the only ones that recommend the Chef's Convection Toaster Oven. The Wirecutter recommends this oven as the best large toaster oven. Good Housekeeping Institute tested an older model of this oven and gave it high marks. Techlicious also gave an older version of this oven a great review.

Buyers on Bed Bath & Beyond as well as Amazon give it high marks, and it's won an Amazon's Choice Award. There have been some reports of the door failing over time, some say the labels rub off the buttons, and others complain that it gets hot to the touch.

However, Cuisinart does warn that the sides will heat up and you should remove any meltable objects from the top and sides before you begin baking. The oven comes with a three-year warranty, to, so if you do run into any problems, contact Cuisinart for a replacement. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Comes with pizza stone and pans, easy to use, bakes evenly, lots of settings

Cons: A bit pricey takes up counter space

Buy the Cuisinart Chef's Convection Toaster Oven on Amazon for $183.99

Buy the Cuisinart Chef's Convection Toaster Oven at Bed Bath & Beyond for $259.99

The best small toaster oven

Why you'll love it: The Breville BOV450XL Mini Smart Oven with Element IQ has the power of a traditional oven with faster pre-heat times and a smaller footprint in your kitchen.

The main feature that sets the Breville Mini Smart Oven apart is its use of Element IQ variable power distribution. It works like this: Food is cooked more quickly and evenly using the power of four individual quartz heating elements. This distributes heat throughout the appliance where it is needed. The oven adjusts the wattage of the heating elements up to 1,800 watts for flexible cooking based on the heating menu options you choose. The pre-set menu options include toast, bake, broil, roast, cookies, reheat, pizza, and bagel.

With dimensions of 16 by 13 by 9 inches, the Breville Mini Smart Oven is the smallest toaster oven Breville makes, and it can fit four slices of toast or an 11-inch pizza inside. Among the many features that make the unit easy to clean are the removable pull-out crumb tray. You should change it often to ensure the device doesn’t malfunction, as most toaster ovens are designed to stop functioning when crumbs build up to an unsafe level.

Expert reviews of the Breville Mini Smart Oven were almost all positive. Compact Appliance rated it highly for its basic functions as well as the sleek, stainless steel design. The reviewer found the “Smart” term in the name of the device to be a bit misleading because there is no special Wi-Fi functionality. Amy Says Cook performed an in-depth review and found this toaster oven preheats quickly and allows for total cooking control. Time 4 Toast, which exclusively reviews toaster ovens, recommended this model despite the high price because of the Element IQ technology.

The Breville Mini Smart Oven has more than 1,200 five-star reviews on Amazon. Buyers report that this toaster oven is durable and performs just as well if not better than traditional ovens. The biggest complaints are that the buzzer is extremely loud and that the handle to the oven door sticks out too far.

Pros: Durable, easy to clean broad array of cooking functions

Cons: No convection feature, loud

Buy the Breville BOV450XL Mini Smart Oven with Element IQ on Amazon for $149.95

The best convection toaster oven

Why you'll love it: The Cuisinart TOB-195 Exact Heat Toaster Oven Broiler allows urban dwellers with the smallest of kitchens to enjoy the benefits of convection cooking.

The Cuisinart Toaster Oven is user-friendly enough for even novice cooks to use with its customizable settings, automatic shut-off, and digital control panel. Most other toaster ovens feature controls on the side panel of the device, but the TOB-195 switches things up by putting the buttons and LCD at the bottom. This allows for a narrower appliance that's perfect for tiny spaces. This model has a 0.6-cubic-foot capacity, which fits six slices of toast, a 12-inch pizza, or two smaller chickens.

The Cuisinart TOB-195 caught the attention of Good Housekeeping, which gave the toaster oven good grades for cooking toast consistently and for its convection cooking. However, it lost points because the crumb tray was only accessible from the rear of the unit and the boiler pan was not deep enough to contain all the drippings from a roasted chicken. Another expert review by Cooking Detective liked how well-designed and versatile this model is.

Around 71% of the reviews of the Cuisinart TOB-195 on Amazon are for five stars. Buyers comment that this model does a superior job of cooking cakes, pizzas, casseroles, and more. There are also some verified purchasers who have used their toaster oven regularly without it failing for more than a decade. The top critical review complained of the glass door exploding while cooking a potato, but we could not find any other reports of this happening.

Pros: Excellent toasting, roasting, and convection cooking capabilities

Cons: Hard to clean

Buy the Cuisinart TOB-195 Exact Heat Toaster Oven Broiler on Amazon for $179.00

Mercedes-Benz unveiled its EQC electric SUV on Tuesday. The vehicle will mark the debut of the automaker's electric "EQ" marque and will be available in the US in 2020.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the EQC will have two motors that generate 564 pound-feet of torque, 402 horsepower, and the ability to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The automaker says its 80kWh battery will provide up to 200 miles of range and will be able to charge from 10% to 80% capacity in 40 minutes when using a DC fast charger.

The EQC's estimated range is lower than the stated ranges from upcoming competitors like the Jaguar I-Pace (up to 240 miles) and Audi e-tron (over 248 miles), which are expected to arrive at US dealerships later this year and in 2019, respectively. The maximum range for a Tesla Model X is 295 miles.

The EQC will also include Mercedes-Benz's new user interface, MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), which features a digital instrument panel and touchscreen. Mercedes-Benz says the interface will be able to learn and predict driver tendencies, like frequent destinations and radio station choices, and make suggestions based on them.

Drivers will be able to control many of the vehicle's settings with voice control, which the automaker says will be able to infer requests from a wide range of voice prompts. For example, if a driver or passenger says the car is too cold, the vehicle will increase its temperature.

The vehicle will have semi-autonomous driver-assistance features that will be able to control the vehicle's speed in heavy traffic, provide steering assistance, and brake to avoid or limit the damage from a collision, according to Mercedes-Benz.

Production for the EQC will begin in 2019 in Bremen, Germany.

After the EQC, Mercedes-Benz will release an electric sedan. The automaker has said it plans to invest $11 billion in electric vehicles by 2022.

Take a look at the EQC below.

4 countries where kids spend fewer days in classrooms than in the US

school 2008

According to the Center for Public Education, US public schools require students to be in the classroom between 175 to 180 days a year. That breaks down to somewhere in the ballpark of 900 to 1,000 hours, depending on what state you live in. Currently, 35 states in the US require at least 990 hours of educational learning. So, as a rough estimate, US public school students spend about half of their year in the classroom.

Additionally, the typical first-grader will seven roughly seven hours a day learning, according to The Washington Post.

How does that stack up against other school children around the globe? American students are known for spending less time in the classroom than most of their counterparts in China, India, and other countries. A 2017 Pew Research Center poll found that the US still falls behind other countries in terms of reading, math, and science scores.

It's worth noting that since each state has different requirements for class time in the US, and some countries don't have this information readily available. With that in mind, these four countries have more time off from school than the US on average.

In Russia, students get out at 1 or 2 p.m.

According to the Pew Research Center, Russian primary school students (also referred to as elementary school in the US) spend 470 hours in the classroom during the school year. That's a little more than half of the 990 hours that US elementary students spend in school. Further, the least amount of time Russian students get for vacation annually is four months. Students in Russia attend school five days a week and usually get started around 8 a.m. and end around 1 or 2 p.m, according to Just Landed.

Although Russian schoolchildren are spending the least amount of time in the classroom compared to other countries, it doesn't mean they are learning less. According to the US Central Intelligence Agency, 99.7% of people ages 15 and older can read and write in Russia.

In Finland, children get a 15-minute break every 45 minutes.

In Finland, school officials believe that less is more. According to the HuffPost, children attend school between 8 and 9 a.m. each day and finish around 1 to 2 p.m. For every 45 minutes of learning, the children get a 15-minute break. This equates to an average of three hours and 45 minutes of educational instruction each day. In the US, children spend roughly 6.5 hours a day in the classroom.

School officials in Finland may be on to something, though. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development found that Finnish students ranked number two amongst other countries in reading, math, and science, according to The Guardian.

Icelandic students attend school 170 days of the year.

Icelandic students attend school 170 days out of the year, according to State University. That's not much less than American students, but it does make a dent in the overall time spent learning. Students attend class five days a week.

Icelandic students landed in the 13th spot for reading, math, and science when compared to 64 other countries worldwide, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

  • You may want to know how to get a job at Amazon.
  • One Amazon engineer recommended memorizing Jeff Bezos' 14 leadership principles, a set of guidelines that Amazon employees use to solve problems and innovate daily.
  • After memorizing the principles, the engineer specifically used them during her interviews.

Amazon just hit $1 trillion in value. It's also where the most Americans want to work this year, according to a LinkedIn survey

Led by Jeff Bezos, Amazon has 14 leadership principles for its employees. From "ownership" to "dive deep," these guidelines are designed to drive innovative thinking and quick action.

For those interested in working for Amazon, memorizing and using those principles is a key way to show you'd fit in the company culture.

Corey Salzer

Corey Salzer, a 23-year-old solutions architect who has been working at Amazon Web Services since August 2017, said that mentioning the principles in your résumé, cover letter, and interview was a major way to impress recruiters.

"One of the big things, I would say, is that Amazon really focuses on our leadership principles," Salzer told Business Insider. "They basically encourage a set of guidelines for how Amazon culture operates, so really learning those leadership principles" is important.

"Memorizing them would definitely help [applicants], and being able to even use them in their language during the interviews," Salzer said.

For example: Use the leadership principle in its exact phrasing and connect it back to something you've done at a previous job, internship, or project.

Take a look below to see which five of the 14 leadership principles Salzer highlighted in her interviews, and how she recommends using them in real life.

"Customer obsession is really the big one," Salzer said. "We focus on Amazon's customers and always working backwards from what they need and what they're doing."

Salzer said that during her Amazon interview, she emphasized that she and her team focused on the needs of her users and customers while designing a product.

2. "Deliver results."

Here's how Amazon defines deliver results: "Leaders focus on the key inputs for their business and deliver them with the right quality and in a timely fashion. Despite setbacks, they rise to the occasion and never settle."

To show your investment in delivering results, Salzer recommended this phrase: "I was able to have a lot of responsibility and decision-making ability for X project, and by doing Y tasks, I delivered results in Z number of launches."

You might also explain any setbacks that this project faced or what the turnaround was.

3. "Learn and be curious."

This is how Amazon defines learn and be curious: "Leaders are never done learning and always seek to improve themselves. They are curious about new possibilities and act to explore them."

To demonstrate your interest in becoming more knowledgeable, Salzer recommended this phrase: "I displayed learning and being curious in my classes where we were learning X. But I was interested in Y, so I learned about that through Z method."

10 of the biggest beauty pageant scandals of all time

MISS AMERICA PAGEANT PROTESTLove them or hate them, beauty pageants have been a part of our culture for years— in fact, the first Miss America pageant took place in 1921. And over the past century, there have definitely been a few scandals here and there, involving the contestants and the pageants themselves.

These are some of the biggest scandals involving beauty pageants that have happened over the years.

Sam Haskell's emails were exposed.

In December 2017, Huffington Post published emails written by Miss America CEO Sam Haskell to others employed by the organization, using misogynistic language to describe women who compete in the pageant. Many of the emails spoke about certain contestants by name and referred to them as "snakes" and "c----."

Haskell ended up resigning two days after the emails became public, and board chair, Lynn Weidner, also resigned.

Miss Nevada was arrested for meth trafficking.

Katie Rees was stripped of her title as Miss Nevada after photos of her partially nude in a nightclub had surfaced in 2005. She apologized at the time and appealed to then co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization Donald Trump.

"These photographs were from an isolated incident during my teenage years," Rees said during a press conference, according to Fox News. "This incident does not reflect who I am, or who I plan to be. I have no intention of further disgracing the state of Nevada, the Miss Universe organization, or Mr. Donald Trump."

Rees was later arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer in 2008 and was later charged with felony drug charges in two different drug busts in 2015.

Steve Harvey announced the wrong Miss Universe winner.

In 2015, Harvey — who was hosting the pageant — announced that Miss Colombia (Ariadna Gutierrez) had scored the title of Miss Universe when really, the true winner was Miss Philippines(Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach).

Harvey later took to Twitter to apologize, but the damage was done.

I visited the Portuguese castle called 'Disneyland for adults,' and it's a magical, real-life fairy-tale setting you can't miss

PenaPalace2

  • Sintra, Portugal, a picturesque city 15 miles outside of Lisbon in the Sintra Mountains, is home to numerous palaces, villas, mansions, castles, and churches.
  • The most stunning of the sights in Sintra is the Pena National Palace, built in 1840 according to the exacting specifications of King Ferdinand II, who wanted the palace to be a melting pot of architectural styles and colors.
  • The palace is said to have inspired King Ludwig II's German castle, Neuschwanstein, which inspired Walt Disney's castle at Disneyland.
  • Though the palace and the surrounding grounds are undoubtedly crowded with tourists in the summer, it is an absolutely can't-miss, dreamy sight that visitors are unlikely to forget.

I almost didn't go.

After spending several weeks running around Lisbon, Porto, the sun-drenched beach region of Algarve, and everywhere in between, I thought: Why not relax on my last day in Portugal and avoid a place often described as "Disneyland for adults"?

What a mistake that would've been.

Only 15 miles from Lisbon, Sintra is about as fairy-tale Portugal as it gets. Designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site, the picturesque city is on the Portuguese Riviera and among the Sintra Mountains, a verdant range dense with pines, oaks, and wildlife. It's long been known as the setting of several myths, legends, and supernatural happenings in Portugal.

The otherworldly air is enhanced by the numerous palaces, villas, mansions, churches, and castles ensconced in the forested mountain peaks.

While there are more than half a dozen sites to visit, the most stunning two, in my opinion, are the Pena National Palace and the Castle of the Moors. The architectural feats — built in 1840 and the ninth century, respectively — best exhibit how Sintra has been a romantic destination throughout the ages.

The Pena Palace is made of dreams. At the top of a hill to be visible in every direction, and often enveloped in fog, the palace is a tapestry of colors and styles ranging from Romantic to Islamic to Gothic, surrounded by 500 acres of winding paths, gardens, and exotic trees.

You're likely to feel as if you are walking into a magical kingdom — I certainly did on my recent visit to the palace and the surrounding castles and gardens in Sintra. Here's what it was like.

SEE ALSO: I ate at the most beautiful McDonald's in the world, with crystal chandeliers, stained glass windows, and outrageously delicious pastries

I got to Sintra in the late afternoon, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. While there was still an hour line to get into the Pena Palace, the crowds had started to thin. In the summer months, many of Sintra's sights are open until 7 or 8 p.m., so I still had plenty of time.

The ticket seller recommended I visit the Castle of the Moors before Pena Palace, as by the time I was done there would no longer be a line. When in doubt, a hard and fast rule of travel is "trust the locals." The walk to the Castle of the Moors gave me my first look at the dense forests of the Sintra Mountains.

The Castle of the Moors was constructed in the eighth and ninth centuries by the Muslim Moors who conquered Portugal and Spain in medieval times. Numerous structures — like this tomb — make up the complex.

The 20 schools with the best chances to make the College Football Playoff after Week 1

$

Nick Saban

College football is back, and even though the top teams have played just one game, we already have a sense of which schools have the best shot to make the fifth installment of the 4-team playoff at the end of the season.

There were a lot of telling games in Week 1, as the opening slate of games gave us some near-upsets, some disappointing performances in matchups of ranked teams, and some good teams that looked even more dominant than expected.

We still don't know precisely how the committee picks the final four teams, but we have learned a few things over the years. We know they like the SEC and Alabama. We know they generally prefer conference champions if most other criteria are in the same ballpark. And we know they don't like to give bids to Pac-12 and Big 12 teams in the same year.

With what we have learned so far, we have some idea of what teams need to do to make the playoff. Below, we ranked the top 20 teams in the country based on their chances to make the playoff.

20. Miami

Record (AP Rank): 0-1 (NA)

Last week's result: Lost to LSU, 33-17.

Last week's playoff rank: 6

Key games remaining: The schedule is in Miami's favor this season, with Florida State at home. Their toughest road game is Virginia Tech late in the year.

One thing to know: Miami looked terrible in a game that was not as close as the score suggests. If Hurricane fans want a silver lining, their 1983 championship team lost, 28-3, in Week 1 before turning it around and running the table. The schedule suggests it is doable, but even if they can, they will be severely outgunned again if they face Clemson in the ACC title game.

19. UCF

Record (AP Rank): 1-0 (NA)

Last week's result: Beat UConn, 56-17

Last week's playoff rank: 19

Key games remaining: UCF does not face a team ranked in the preseason top 25, but does close the season on the road against South Florida.

One thing to know: After missing out on the playoff in 2017, UCF could put pressure on the playoff committee if they run the table and dominate their opponents. So far, so good.

18. Mississippi State

Record (AP Rank): 1-0 (NA)

Last week's result: Beat Stephen F. Austin, 63-6

Last week's playoff rank: 18

Key games remaining: The Bulldogs have Auburn at home in early October and then play road games at LSU, Alabama, and Ole Miss.

One thing to know: New coach Joe Moorhead inherited a lot of talent from Dan Mullen, who left for Florida. That included dual-threat QB Nick Fitzgerald who was suspended for Week 1.

The rise of Jeff Bezos, who built Amazon into a $1 trillion company and became the richest person in modern history (AMZN)

Jeff Bezos

It's been an eventful few months of Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.

In July, Bezos reached a new milestone: his net worth hit $150 billion, making him, as Bloomberg put it, the richest person in modern history.

And then on Tuesday, Bezos and Amazon hit another milestone: Amazon briefly became the second US company to achieve a valuation of more than $1 trillion — though its market cap sunk just under the threshhold thereafter.

That success hasn't come overnight, however. Bezos began his career in the hedge fund world in the 90s, then left a cushy job to launch his own startup.

Here's how Bezos got his start, and built one of the largest tech companies in the world.

Jillian D'Onfro and Eugene Kim contributed earlier versions of this story.

Jeff Bezos wife Mackenzie

  • Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie were married in 1993, after meeting at D.E. Shaw & Co.
  • Shortly afterward, the couple relocated to Seattle to found Amazon.
  • MacKenzie was one of the company's first employees.
  • Today, Jeff Bezos is worth $166 billion, making him the richest person in history.

Jeff Bezos wasn't alone when he made his cross-county road trip to Seattle in 1994. And he wasn't alone when he founded Amazon, the online retail giant some analysts now believe will be the world's first trillion-dollar company.

His wife, MacKenzie, was there for the whole journey.

In an interview with CBS, she described watching her husband build Amazon up from scratch: "To me, watching your spouse, somebody that you love, have an adventure — what is better than that?"

Today, Bloomberg estimates Bezos is worth $166 billion— making him the richest person in history, according to CNN. He's also topped Forbes' annual list of the richest people on the planet for the first time ever. And, on Tuesday, Amazon followed Apple to become the second-ever US company to reach a $1 trillion valuation.
