Roger Stone is becoming a prominent figure in the Russia investigation — here are all of his associates Mueller has called for questioning

Roger Stone

  • Special counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian interference in the 2016 US election is zeroing in on Roger Stone, one of President Donald Trump's longtime allies.
  • One of Stone's associates will testify before a grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday.
  • In all, seven of Stone's current and former associates have been called for questioning as part of the Mueller probe.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian interference in the 2016 US election is zeroing in on Roger Stone, a longtime ally to President Donald Trump, and one of Stone's associates is set to testify before a grand jury on Friday.

Stone, an informal advisor to the Trump campaign, is being scrutinized by the Mueller probe over his contacts accused of illegally interfering in the 2016 presidential election with the intent of swaying it in favor of Trump.

During the 2016 election, Stone allegedly communicated with Guccifer 2.0, an online persona whom Stone painted as a lone hacker, but was later revealed to be a Russian security officer when Mueller indicted 12 Russian operatives for the hacking of Hillary Clinton's campaign in July 2018.

Stone also maintained contacts with Wikileaks, the radical open-source group that the US intelligence community has accused of acting as a "hostile non-state actor" in collaborating with Russia to disseminate the hacked emails in order to bias the American electorate against Clinton.

As one example, Stone repeatedly referenced alleged wrongdoing by Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta before Wikileaks released a trove of hacked emails belonging to Podesta. He has consistently denied being given prior knowledge of the release by Wikileaks.

Stone has repeatedly claimed that the investigation of him and the questioning of his aides amounts to politically-motivated witch hunt — and he says he won't be surprised if he ends up getting indicted himself.

Along with the associates set to testify on Friday, others have already appeared before a grand jury, and still others have not yet been questioned.

Here are all seven of Stone's associates who have been called for questioning:

Sam Nunberg

Sam Nunberg is a former friend and professional mentee of Stone who served as a political advisor for Trump while he considered a bid for governor of New York in 2014. He then did a brief stint on the Trump 2016 campaign.

Although Nunberg was ultimately fired from the Trump campaign, he remained in contact with officials including Stone and former White House adviser Steve Bannon.

After initially defying the subpoena, Nunberg ultimately testified before a grand jury in March and provided the special counsel with email exchanges between him and Stone as well as other campaign advisers.

Since Nunberg's grand jury testimony, Stone has gone on the attack against his former friend, calling him "deceitful and duplicitous" and accusing him of being an alcoholic.

Jason Sullivan

Jason Sullivan, a social media expert who consulted for Stone's political action committee in 2016, testified before Mueller's grand jury in June.

Reuters reported that Sullivan was served with two subpoenas from Mueller, one requesting his testimony, and the other ordering he provide the special counsel with certain documents and data.

Sullivan, a Twitter specialist, reportedly prepared strategy documents for Stone's PAC advising them on how to maximize their reach and effectiveness on Twitter.

Kristin Davis, "The Manhattan Madam"

Kristin Davis, a close friend and associate of Stone's, testified before a grand jury as part of the the Mueller probe on August 10.

Davis, 41, earned the moniker "Manhattan Madam" when she served time in jail for running an elite prostitution ring that catered to high-end clients in the 2000s.

She's not only good friends with Stone, but has worked for him on and off as a developer for his websites. She and Stone live in the same apartment building in New York City, and Stone is the godfather to her young son.

"She has no knowledge of Russian collusion, WikiLeaks collaboration or any other illegal activity on my part," Stone told The Washington Post. "At the instruction of my attorneys, I have not discussed her testimony with her."

cara mund miss america 2018

After weathering several scandals — including the one involving leaked emails from former CEO Sam Haskill— 2019 will mark the first Miss America pageant where there is no swimsuit competition. This is just one step the organization is taking to become more empowering, so it'll be worth tuning in to see if the pageant lives up to the promise.

Fans can watch the competition live Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on ABC, but preliminary competitions are already underway. And, as a result, there are some women who are ahead of the 51-competitor pack.

Between their activism, their followings, and their accomplishments in and out of the pageant world, here are the 20 contestants you should keep an eye on during this year's pageant.

Miss Louisiana already showed off her talents.

Miss Louisiana, Holli Conway, is already sweeping the competition. On night two of the preliminary pageant competition, she scored a win in the talent section with her vocal performance of "I Believe."

Conway studied theater at Northwestern University, and her platform is inspiring others to share their talents with the world.

Miss Florida already won scholarship money.

Taylor Tyson, much like Conway, is already a winner — she earned up to $2,000 in scholarship money for her talent, playing classical piano.

This 23-year-old majored in political science and wants to empower women to join male-dominated fields, like music and academia. She’s also spent the last 12 years mentoring girls, which means she’s been working toward her platform for a long time, which will undoubtedly be impressive to judges.

Miss Wisconsin spoke of important topics.

On night one of the preliminary competition, 25-year-old Tianna Vanderhei won scholarship money when she spoke about how important diversity is on college campuses.

A dancer,Vanderhei wants to encourage people to build their "soft skills," like communication and leadership. In the past, she's worked as a news anchor before starting her current career in advertising.

These popular brands say Trump's tariffs are forcing them to raise prices

  • President Donald Trump's import taxes are meant to help US manufacturers by making foreign products more expensive, but some companies say the costs are likely to trickle down to American consumers.
  • Several companies have either already raised their prices or say they plan to as a result of the tariffs.
  • On Friday, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on another $267 billion worth of Chinese goods. Analysts say this is bad news for the retail sector.

President Donald Trump's tariffs are leading to higher import costs for US-based companies, and it's American consumers who are likely to bear the burden.

While the White House has pointed to national security issues as justification for the tariffs, there's also a practical economic component to Trump's duties. The tariffs on foreign imports such as washing machines, steel, and aluminum are designed to make foreign goods more expensive and therefore US manufacturers more appealing.

Since these tariffs have been in place, several US companies including Coca-Cola and Winnebago have said they have been forced to raise prices on the consumer's side. Others are threatening to follow suit.

According to the Labor Department, the average cost of washing machines was up 17% in just the past three months, The Wall Street Journal reported.

On Friday, Trump threatened to hit China with tariffs on another $267 billion worth of goods.

"The new tariffs are bad news for the retail sector, especially as the latest round seems to extend the tax to a vast array of consumer goods. Many retailers will now be faced with a difficult choice of whether to pass the cost increases across to consumers or to take a hit on their margins," Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, wrote in a comment email to Business Insider.

"Fortunately, the consumer is currently in a position to cope with some mild rises in retail prices. However, a rise in prices across the board will likely result in a decline in retail volumes over the longer term, which will be unhelpful to the sector," he added.

Here's a list of some of the best-known brands that have spoken out about the new tariffs and either raised prices already or say they plan to:

SEE ALSO: See all the products that will cost you more because of Trump's trade war

Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola said on July 27 it would be raising the price of its sodas in the middle of the year.

"There is some broad-based push on input costs that have kind of come in and affected ours and many other industries as well," CEO James Quincey told The Wall Street Journal.

Quincey cited steel and aluminum tariffs announced by Trump earlier this year as one of the causes of increased costs, but did not specify how high the price increase would be.

Winnebago

"We've had to go to the market a bit more frequently and a bit more aggressively with some price increases as of late," Michael Happe, CEO of Winnebago Industries, told The Wall Street Journal in July.

Happe did not confirm how high the prices increases were.

The company has also made changes to the design of the RV to trim costs.

Polaris Industries

Scott Wine, CEO of Polaris, a company that makes motorcycles, quad bikes, and snowmobiles, said in a recent TV news conference after the release of its second-quarter earnings that the company had raised prices on some items impacted by tariffs, such as motorcycles.

"As we and others raise prices, it creates a real risk of inflation to our customers and the economy, which could be more harmful than the tariffs themselves," Wine said, according to the Associated Press

The company is looking to move production of motorcycles that it sells in Europe from Iowa to Poland to avoid being stung by EU tariffs on US products, The Wall Street Journal reported.

This eco-friendly startup was named New Zealand’s most sustainable business — its solid shampoo and conditioner bars aim to reduce plastic waste

  • 80 billion plastic bottles from shampoo and conditioner alone enter our oceans every year. By 2050, scientists estimate there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.
  • Ethique, a beauty brand started by a female biologist from New Zealand, makes popular (and surprisingly mainstream) solid shampoos, conditioners, lotions, face washes, and even a fan-favorite sunless-tanning bar.
  • The bars are cruelty-free, waste-free, made and packaged with biodegradable materials, and last 2-5 times longer than liquid options.
  • You can shop the products on Amazon and Walmart. You're also able to purchase 'samplers' for their best-selling hair, body, and face bars before committing to just one.
  • After personally using Ethique, I plan to buy more from the company in the future.

Like most people aware of being semi-marooned on a speck of dust in space with the uniquely perfect conditions for life, I have grown concerned about our treatment of the environment.

News blips like “The giant garbage vortex in the Pacific Ocean is over twice the size of Texas” and “Scientists predict by 2050 the ocean will have more plastic than fish” will do that to you.

However, I am not a perfect example of sustainable living. My trash exceeds a mason jar. And while I buy reusable straws, paper towels, and eco-friendly cleaning supplies and I've never littered at the Earth Day march, I am still budget-minded enough to only really swap out household items for "green" alternatives if those alternatives work as well or better than what I had before. I would not use Uniquely J dish soap if it didn't clean my dishes.

For this reason, totally eco-friendly shampoo and conditioner has been a hard sell. My hair is naturally temperamental and on an average day looks much the same as the mass that scientists attach to reconstructions of 9,000-year-old teens. I want to be a conscious consumer, but I also don't want to live the rest of my life with hair that looks like it came from a salon ad in the Mesolithic era.

But a company founded by a female biologist in New Zealand has recently made my life and my quest to not be a hypocrite a lot easier. It's called Ethique, (French for "ethical"), and they make solid beauty bars that actually work. After learning she could make a super concentrated shampoo bar, founder Brianne West moved on to formulate a line of more than 30 solid beauty bars in the lab: shampoos, conditioners, cleansers, scrubs, moisturizers, serums, self-tanners, pet shampoo, and body washes.

Every bar is vegan, sustainably sourced, and naturally-derived. And thanks to Ethique's dedication to only using biodegradable ingredients and packaging, none of their bars leave a trace on the environment.

Screen Shot 2018 05 03 at 10.43.56 AM

For the average person, Ethique bars are a win-win-win option if you're trying to save money or treat your body and the environment better without sacrificing on performance or convenience.

Good for your body: Ethique bars contain little or no preservatives but are packed with fresh and natural ingredients like coconut oil, cocoa butter, kiwifruit seed oil and essential oils. Your skin will feel softer without the harsh chemicals, and since your skin can absorb up to 60% of what you put on it, it pays off, in the long run, to make sure it's not eating the product equivalent of fast food five times a week.

Good for your budget: Solid bar lotions, face washes, shampoos, and conditioners last 2-5 times longer than liquid products (obviously depending on the product you currently use) because they're super-concentrated. Some customers have claimed to make a single bar last a year, but the company says it should last five months with regular use.

Good for the environment: More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year — of which include 80 billion plastic bottles just from shampoo and conditioner alone. As part of a proactive solution, Ethique is made with biodegradable ingredients and packaging so their solid bars leave no trace on the earth. There are zero bottles, jars, lids, or pump dispensers to clutter your apartment or landfills and oceans. To date, the company has prevented more than 150,000 plastic bottles from being made and disposed of.

Plus, you can try samples of their best-sellers without committing to a bar that's going to last you five months/seemingly outlive you. I had a chance to try the hair sampler and now regularly use the Frizz Wrangler shampoo and Guardian conditioner bars. When they run out, I plan to buy more.

The startup itself is certified climate-neutral, cruelty-free, and BCorp. They also donate 2% of revenue or 20% of profit (whichever is highest) to charity.

In 2015, Ethique was recognized as New Zealand's most sustainable business with 'the Best in B' award. In its early stages, the company attracted the highest number of female investors in PledgeMe history. (PedgeMe is New Zealand's crowdfunding platform).

Thanks to their intentional marriage of natural ingredients and scientific application, the bars have become much more popular than you might expect for a startup that's challenging beauty norms, asking people to switch how they wash their hair, and proposing that they ditch the products they grew up with for something natural. But, by and by, reviews from customers have been consistently impressively positive (from myself included), and you can shop the beauty bars on Amazon and Walmart

If you're looking for a way to introduce fewer chemicals to your skin or the water supply but don't want to compromise on the health of your hair or its appearance, I suggest picking up one of Ethique's hair samplers to figure out if one of their long-lasting (and waste-free) bars works for your life.

Throughout her legendary career, singer Aretha Franklin was known for her sense of style. So much so that at her funeral last week, former President Bill Clinton said he was thinking when he walked up to her casket, "I wonder what my friend has got on today."

While the "Queen of Soul" is no longer with us, fans will soon be able to own a piece of her wardrobe.

On November 9 and 10, over 30 dresses and accessories from Aretha's career are set to be auctioned off at the Hard Rock Café in New York City.

Julien's Auction's is organizing the event, which will see items such as the gown the singer wore to Clinton's 1997 inauguration sold to the highest bidder.

Some of the items are expected to fetch up to $3,000. Scroll down to see a few of the items that will be for sale.

Aretha wore this sequin romper with a red silk taffeta vest during a performance at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City in 1991.

The auction house expects the look to fetch between $2,000 and $3,000.

The "Queen of Soul" went for a professional formal suit when she appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 1994 to celebrate the host's 40th birthday.

The best Android tablets you can buy

best android tablet

  • We tested a bunch of Android tablets to find the best, and Samsung's Galaxy Tab S4 is the cream of the crop with its stunning screen, fast processor, and ability to serve as a laptop in a pinch.

Android tablets never really caught on in the same way that Apple's iPad did, but that doesn't mean there aren't some good ones out there.

We've tested about a dozen Android tablets over the years, and some have really impressed us with their solid performance, unique features, or low price tags.

Whether you're looking for a cheap tablet, a sturdy one for your kids, a productive one for students, or the best of the best in Android tablets, there's a tablet for everyone in our buying guide.

Here are the best Android tablets you can buy:

Updated on 09/07/2018 by Malarie Gokey: Added the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 after testing. Added the Asus tablet. Updated links and prices. Removed Huawei tablets that are out of stock — We'll keep you updated on their availability.

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

SEE ALSO: The best iPads you can buy

The best Android tablet overall

Why you'll love it: Samsung's Galaxy Tab S4 is as stylish as it is powerful, you can use it as a laptop in a pinch, and it comes with the superb S Pen stylus.

Samsung has been making excellent Android tablets for years, and its recently launched Galaxy Tab S4 continues that tradition. It's a high-end Android tablet that can compete with Apple's 9.7-inch iPad Pro on nearly every level.

The Tab S4 is a stylish, well-made tablet with a metal frame and glossy glass back. It borrows design cues from Samsung's Galaxy S9 phone, though the Tab S4's screen has slightly bigger bezels around it. If you hate fingerprints or simply fear that the glass back is in danger of shattering or scratching, we recommend you check out Samsung's keyboard case.

The keyboard case is sturdy and — with the help of Samsung's DEX software — it turns your tablet into a quasi-laptop. When you dock the tablet in the keyboard, it asks if you want to switch to DEX mode. DEX mode basically turns the normal Android home screen into a laptop-like desktop. You can see files and icons on the screen and interact with apps and the web browser just like you would on a laptop or Chromebook.

Since it is Samsung's own software built on top of Android running on this tablet and not ChromeOS, you don't get quite as robust a laptop experience as you would with a Chromebook. However, DEX works well enough if you're in a pinch and you need your tablet to become a laptop immediately.

Also, for those of you who don't use a laptop for much other than web browsing and writing up documents, DEX will exceed your expectations. The software makes this tablet double as a laptop, but it is a tablet first and foremost.

Samsung sure knows how to make astonishingly beautiful screens. The Tab S4 has a gorgeous 10.5-inch display that supports HDR content. I watched lots of Netflix and Prime Video on the tablet, and I was really impressed by the clarity, color reproduction, and intensity of the brilliant screen. The tablet's 64GB of storage gives you ample space for downloads, and it's expandable with a microSD card.

Every Tab S4 comes with Samsung's new S Pen stylus, which is great for drawing and feels like a real pen. I love to draw on tablets, and I was impressed by the lack of lag on the Tab S4. Palm rejection was a little spotty in some apps, but overall, it's a great tablet for drawing or note taking.

If you have $650 to spend on a high-end Android tablet, you can't do better than the Galaxy Tab S4. However, it is expensive for a tablet these days and if you want to use DEX mode to make it a laptop, too, you will have to pay more for the keyboard cover.

If you want a great tablet that works as a laptop in emergencies, but it. If you want a laptop that can be a tablet sometimes, buy Samsung's Chromebook Pro instead — for $50 less.

Pros: Gorgeous screen, fast processor, S Pen stylus is included, and powerful speakers

Cons: Expensive and the glass back can easily break with rough handling

Buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 on Amazon for $650

The best Android tablet under $300

Why you’ll love it: The Asus ZenPad 3S 10 has a vibrant 9.7-inch screen and a great price tag that falls below $300.

The Asus ZenPad 3S 10 costs about half the price of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, but it still has a fantastic high-resolution screen and decent processing power.

The 9.7-inch screen has a 2K resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels and a 178-degree wide viewing angle so you can crowd a couple people around the screen to show videos or photos. The 7.1-channel audio system ensures that you'll have good audio with the tablet, too.

A MediaTek processor and 4GB RAM power the tablet, while the 64GB of storage gives you plenty of space for downloads, apps, photos, and video. The storage is expandable with a MicroSD card up to 128GB, so you shouldn't run out of space any time soon.

Although you probably won't use the cameras much, the 8 and 5-megapixel cameras will serve in a pinch. The specs on this tablet are really good — especially for the sub-$300 price.

Other expert reviewers agree that this Asus tablet is a great affordable option with solid specs. TechRadarPocket Lint, and Notebook Check all recommend it, as does The Wirecutter.

Buyers on Amazon by and large give the tablet high marks, and it's earned an Amazon Choice Award.

Pros: Large screen size that you’ll love for watching movies with multiple people, decent gaming performance, good price point for a tablet with a large screen, wide viewing angle, better than HD resolution

Cons: Doesn’t quite match high performance of iPads, some questions with longevity, some issues with gaming performance

Buy the Asus ZenPad 3S 10 on Amazon for $289

The best Android tablet for less than $100

Why you'll love it: Amazon's Fire HD 8 may be incredibly cheap, but it's a good Android tablet for anyone on a budget.

Amazon makes lots of cheap Android tablets. Some are low-powered, low-resolution slates, but others, like the newly updated Fire HD 8, are actually great bang for your buck based on our testing. Now that Amazon is offering deals on select phones and its Fire tablets, this cheap tablet is even cheaper — provided you don't mind seeing ads on your screen.

Since it's a budget tablet, the new Fire HD 8 isn't top-of-the-line, but it offers just enough quality tech to make it a great deal. The 8-inch screen has a HD 1,280 x 800-pixel resolution, which is sharp enough to make watching videos on it a good experience. It's just the right size for reading, and the grippy plastic body is comfortable to hold.

Amazon offers some fun colors, too, making this a great tablet for anyone who's bored with metallic tones and plain black budget devices. It should be relatively durable, though it isn't water resistant, so don't go dunking it in the bath or pool.

The new Fire HD 8 offers decent performance, and Amazon's custom version of Android, Fire OS, runs smoothly. You can choose between 16 or 32GB of storage, but no matter how much you pick, you can expand it via a microSD card slot up to 256GB. We recommend that you do so, and you can check out the best micoSD cards you can buy here.

You'll have access to the Alexa voice assistant, 400,000 apps, and Amazon's Mayday customer support service, which connects you with a real person via a live video chat to help you solve any problem with your device.

If you're a Prime member, you can watch Prive Video, read dozens of ebooks, stream free music, and access shopping quickly on Fire OS. Prime buyers have the option of getting the tablet with special offers, which are ads on the lockscreen and elsewhere. The price will be lower, but ads may be annoying to some. We've included both prices, so you can decide.

It's a very good deal for people who want a cheap Android tablet. If you have a young kid who would also love a cheap tablet, read all about the Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet in the next slide.

If you're curious to hear more about how the Fire HD 8 performs, read our full review on Insider Picks.

Pros: Super cheap, cute color options, decent HD screen, Alexa, and sturdy build quality

Cons: Not the sharpest screen or the best processor

Nike's new campaign celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Just Do It," which features former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, has been at the center of controversy this week.

On Monday, Kaepernick shared an image of his face on Twitter with the words "Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything." Nike retweeted the image, which reportedly kicks off a new multiyear deal between the former NFL player and the sportswear company.

On Wednesday, Nike released the full version of the commercial, which is narrated by Kaepernick and features a range of athletes including inspirational amateurs, Serena Williams, and LeBron James.

Kaepernick was the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem before games as part of a protest against racial inequality and police brutality. Some have accused Kaepernick and players who followed in his footsteps as disrespecting the American flag and the military, and quickly began threatening to boycott the brand in response to the ad, with some even going so far as burning their Nike shoes.

Nike has a long history of using its ads to make a social statement. The "Just Do It" campaign, created by the Wieden+Kennedy agency, launched in 1988. The first commercial in the campaign featured 80-year-old Bay Area icon Walter Stack, who ran approximately 62,000 miles in his lifetime.

This isn't the first time someone's gone viral for their on-camera antics at a Trump rally

An audience member standing behind President Trump at a campaign rally in Montana went viral Thursday night when he made funny faces at the camera during Trump's speech.

The unidentified man was eventually removed from his spot. But he isn't the first person to go viral while making a scene behind the president.

A marine veteran went viral after his friend fed him a chip.

In March of 2016, Marius Loots, a Marine veteran, sat with a couple of friends behind Trump at a rally.

He got hungry, so he asked one of his friend to feed him.

His friend gave him a nacho chip, sailing it through the air as if it were on an airplane.

"I just said, 'Yo, I'm hungry.' And he replied, 'I gotchu,'"Loots told INSIDER at the time. "And then he fed me that chip, airplane-style."

Loots also told INSIDER that he became uncomfortable when Trump asked the audience to make a pledge, and said he and his friend just wanted to do something funny for friends and family.

The "Blacks for Trump" guy frequently gets attention at the president's rallies.

At several Trump rallies, there was a person carrying a "Blacks for Trump" sign positioned behind the president. That person was identified by the Chicago Tribune as "Michael the Black Man," who is also known as Michael Symonette, Maurice Woodside, and Mikael Israel. His poster references gods2.com, a conspiracy theory website he runs. He was twice charged and acquitted for murder in 1990.

Chris Christie once stole the show.

In March of 2016, Trump was solidly the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination and gained the endorsement of a former rival, New Jersey governor Chris Christie.

At a speech shortly after his endorsement, all eyes were on Christie — who looked ashen.

The grave expression went viral, with many people saying he looked as though he'd been taken hostage.

travel friendly beauty main

From haircare to skincare and makeup, you probably have your at-home beauty routine down pat. But translating it into a travel- or gym-friendly process can be difficult when you have limited bag space or TSA restrictions holding you back.

Carrying around full-sized products isn't practical, and it's just plain devastating when the TSA officer discovers them in your bag and throws them away. Instead of stressing about how you're going to pare down your routine or transfer everything into tiny plastic containers, try shopping the mini or travel-sized toiletry section at your favorite beauty retailer first.

Travel-sized toiletries are no longer limited to basics like toothpaste — you can buy mini versions of popular best-sellers and your favorite products like cleansers, moisturizers, eye shadow, setting and toning sprays, and perfumes.

FOREO LUNA cleansing brush

FOREO LUNA play plus, $49, available at Amazon, Ulta, and Nordstrom

If you travel or shower at the gym a lot, you should consider getting this 1.5-inch-wide version of the popular FOREO facial cleansing brush. It uses a AAA battery so you don't need to pack additional chargers, and it has a larger brush head and longer silicone bristles than the LUNA play.

Urban Decay mini setting spray

Urban Decay Mini All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray (1 oz), $15, available at Sephora and Ulta

This light and refreshing spray keeps your face hydrated and your makeup in place for the entire day. You won't have to worry about your makeup slipping away on your flight or as you explore a new city.

This couple is traveling the world for free — here are 11 credit card hacks they used to save $62,000 and earn 2 million points

hannah chad janis bridge

Hannah and Chad Janis have shared a love of adventure since they met while attending Brigham Young University. So after a brief stint in New York City working in finance, they decided quit their jobs and travel the world — for free.

Thanks to 42 credit cards that helped them earn 2 million points in one year, they've visited 18 countries (with many more on their itinerary) and saved a total of $62,000 on travel expenses.

But they're not keeping their strategies to themselves. Chad designed an app called Wall Street Minimalist to help people track credit card rewards and find the best ways to score free flights. You can also follow their adventures on Instagram and YouTube as well as their website, Hannah and Chad.

Chad Janis spoke to INSIDER about their tried-and-true travel hacks that have earned them free trips.

Have a solid financial foundation.

Set yourself up for success before you dive into credit card churning and travel hacking. Janis recommends setting up a system of automated bank accounts that can save, invest, and pay bills so that the basics are covered.

"We recommend getting your financial system set up before you even try this," Janis told INSIDER.

Keep track of your credit score.

A credit score is calculated according to five factors: payment history, credit utilization, length of credit history, total accounts and credit mix, and new credit and credit inquiries.

A good credit score is crucial to successfully apply for new cards and reap new rewards. Janis recommends using Credit Karma to monitor this number.

"You can't do anything or get more cards without that," he said.

Plan ahead to make the most out of miles and rewards.

Having thousands of miles on a domestic airline won't help you if you decide that you want to take a trip overseas. If there's somewhere you've always wanted to visit, choose a credit card with rewards, points, or miles that will help you get there.

"Know ahead of time where you want to go and get cards that transfer to those places," he said.

women face masks skin care

With hundreds of different products on the market, skin care is currently at the forefront of the beauty and wellness industries.

While it's tempting to splurge on trendy items — like 24-karat gold face masks or platinum-infused serums — you don't need to spend a fortune to achieve clear, glowing skin.

To help make skin-care shopping a bit easier, INSIDER looked through customer reviews and rounded up the essential products you'll actually need for every decade of your life.

EVERY AGE: It's important to wear sunscreen no matter how young or old you are.

You should be applying sunscreen at every age, even when it's cloudy outside.

And while you might be tempted to pick a high-SPF sunscreen, that could actually backfire. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, people who use sunscreens with SPF 50 or higher tend to stay in the sun longer or skip reapplication, leaving them at greater risk of UV radiation exposure.

Experts say your best bet for sun protection is a "broad spectrum" sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

Cost: $16

Find out more about Sun Bum's Water-Resistant Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 here >

TEENS: In your teenage years, wash your face daily with a gentle cleanser.

Few people make it through their teenage years without experiencing acne. But even if your breakouts are minimal, regularly washing your face with a simple cleanser is still a good idea.

Cost: $5.49

Find out more about Clean & Clear's Morning Burst Hydrating Facial Cleanser here >

TEENS: Start adding lip balm to your skin-care routine.

If your teenage years are filled with bad breakouts, you may forget to care for another important area of skin: your lips.

Especially during seasons of extreme cold or heat, make sure to use a hydrating balm to keep your lips moisturized.

Cost: $2.99

We shopped at Barnes & Noble and saw a key shortcoming that's hurting the chain in its battle against Amazon (AMZN)

barnes & noble 9471

  • Barnes & Noble is struggling to compete with Amazon.
  • Barnes & Noble stores have become places where customers read, hang out, and have a cup of coffee rather than just shop.
  • On Thursday, Barnes & Noble reported that comparable sales dropped 6.1% in the first quarter.
  • We visited a Barnes & Noble store earlier this year and saw why the chain is struggling.

Barnes & Noble is struggling to keep up with Amazon

The bookstore giant, which has more than 630 locations in the United States, is losing steam in its competition with Amazon. And, some analysts say, its failure to adapt to changing shopping habits could be to blame.

"People may drop in for a browse but they won't make a dedicated trip to a bookstore," GlobalData Retail's Neil Saunders told The Guardian in May. "They don't have the need and they don't have the time. The way people shop changed, and that's been detrimental for Barnes & Noble."

Barnes & Noble has tried to combat people's shifting attitudes towards shopping by creating a great in-store experience, but in doing so, they seem to have become more like libraries than bookstores. People come to browse books, study, have a cup of coffee, and meet up with their friends — not necessarily to buy books.

On Thursday, Barnes & Noble reported comparable sales dropped 6.1% in the first quarter. In the past five years, Barnes & Noble has lost more than $1 billion in value. It cut 1,800 full-time jobs earlier this year, and was recently sued by former CEO Demos Parneros, who alleges that he was fired without cause.

In response, Barnes & Noble said in a statement that Parneros' lawsuit is "nothing but an attempt to extort money from the Company by a CEO who was terminated for sexual harassment, bullying behavior and other violations of company policies after being in the role for approximately one year."

We visited a Barnes & Noble store earlier this year and saw why the chain is struggling:

  • Multi-million-dollar homes for the 1 percent are hardly eyebrow-raising.
  • They are, however, when they extend stories beneath the earth's surface.
  • Here are 50 photos that show how obsessed the wealthy are with subterranean homes.

For the wealthy, owning a luxury home is no rare feat.

But even for the some of the world's wealthiest individuals, underground luxury mansions are an extravagant expense.

But, whether these mansions have been fashioned out of a desire for pure opulence, a lack of space, or paranoia (yes, luxury bomb shelters are a thing), for some, they are a must. These photos show just how obsessed the super rich are with underground mansions.

Miss America is completely revamping itself this year — here are all the changes the competition is making

$

miss america 2017

Since the first Miss America in 1921, the pageant has gone through its fair share of criticism and controversy but rarely any significant changes. After leaked internal emails revealed a pattern of slut-shaming and fat-shaming winners, however — plus the subsequent mass exodus of senior employees — the Miss America Organization has decided to pivot.

When the contestants return to the stage this year, they will be competing in what has been dubbed "Miss America 2.0" thanks to both subtle and dramatic adjustments to the show. Here are all the changes you'll see on Sunday.

Miss America is no longer a "pageant," but rather a "competition."

"We are no longer a pageant, we are a competition," Gretchen Carlson, the chair of the Board of Trustees of the Miss America Organization, said on ABC's "Good Morning America" in June.

Additionally, the contestants are now officially referred to as "candidates."

There's no more swimsuit competition.

"We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance. That's huge,"  Carlson declared in June. "And that means we will no longer have a swimsuit competition."

Read more: Miss America is scrapping its swimsuit competition — and some people aren't on board

Moving forward, Miss America will replace the swimsuit portion with a live interactive session with the judges, Carlson added during her appearance on "GMA."

In a statement provided to INSIDER, a representative for Miss America said contestants will be asked to "highlight [their] achievements and goals in life" and describe "how [they] will use [their] talents, passion, and ambition to perform the job of Miss America" during this new portion of the competition.

The evening gown competition will have a looser dress code.

Although Carlson originally claimed that Miss America would scrap the evening gown portion all together — in favor of "attire that makes [contestants] feel confident and expresses their personal style,"as reported by "GMA"— it appears there will still be a dress code.

Cosmo reports that the evening wear competition theme this year is "red carpet glamour."

According to a representative for Miss America, the new evening gown competition will give contestants "the freedom to outwardly express their self-confidence in evening attire of their choosing while discussing how they will advance their social impact initiative."

Speaking to INSIDER, Regina Hopper, the President and CEO of Miss America, said that while the evening gown portion will still enable contestants to wear their attire of choice, it will not judge them based on their appearance.

We drove a $67,000 Audi RS3 and found that it's a 400-horsepower speed demon designed to take on the best from BMW and Mercedes

Audi RS3 Sedan

  • The Audi RS3 is one of the latest offerings from the German luxury brand's Audi Sport performance division.
  • Audi Sport is cashing in on its racing success with a series of performance models wearing the "R" and "RS" designation.
  • The RS3 is based on Audi's subcompact A3 sedan, and it's the most affordable way to get your hands on a new Audi Sport model in the United States.
  • It's a direct rival for the BMW M2 and the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45.
  • The 2018 Audi RS3 starts at $54,900 and is powered by a 400-horsepower, 2.5-liter, turbocharged five-cylinder engine.

Mercedes-Benz has AMG. BMW has its M cars. Porsche has, well, Porsche.

All of the aforementioned represent the pinnacle of German performance motoring. But there's another member of this club that, until recently, had taken a lower-profile approach to things: Audi Sport.

In the modern era of motorsports, there are few organizations that have had as much success as Audi Sport, from the heights of the World Rally Championships and the iconic Audi Quattro to the grueling 24 hours of the Le Mans endurance sports-car race. At Le Mans, Audi's racing prototypes lost just twice during a 15-year stretch between 2000 and 2014.

In spite of its on-the-track dominance, Audi Sport hasn't become the marking juggernaut like its fellow German performance brands. This is especially the case in the realm of production cars, where AMG, M Sport, and Porsche are household names.

"We spent so much on the authenticity of Audi Sport and the racing of Audi Sport that we forgot to commercialize Audi Sport and take advantage of the success we've had,"Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America, told us in a 2016 interview. "Our competitors have done a smart job of putting more focus into turning out more M cars and AMGs."

A couple of years ago, Audi decided to finally cash in on its racing success through a new line of Audi Sport-produced, high-performance models bearing the "R" and "RS" monikers.

In the United States, the most affordable way to get your hands on one of Audi Sport's hot rod RS cars is the Audi RS3. We were fortunate enough to spend a week with the Teutonic speedster earlier this year.

The 2018 Audi RS3 2.5T quattro S tronic sedan starts at $54,900 in the US. With options, our test car, dressed in a flashy Catalunya Red metallic paint job, left the showroom with an as-tested price of $66,775.
