It is now possible to see the conquest of drug cartels over Mexico.

Viridiana Rios and Michele Coscia of Harvard University created a program called MOGO that searches specialized blogs, local newspapers and Google News for references to the different cartels, their locations and their influence between 1999 and 2011.

The results show how since 2006—when Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared an all-out war against drug traffickers in the country— the cartels have only gotten stronger. Meanwhile, more than 100,000 Mexicans have been killed.

Legalization of Marijuana in Colorado and Washington may radically change the drug debate in Latin America, but for now the cartels control Mexico.

1992: The Tijuana cartel began with a sole corridor into the U.S.

2000: Over the next decade several cartels fought for Tijuana

2006: The Tijuana cartel had established control of the corridor and began expanding

Tatum went from college drop out to stripper and model.

Tatum dropped out of college despite receiving a full scholarship to Glenville State College in West Virginia to play football.

Robert Greene

Robert Greene is the bestselling author of The 48 Laws Of Power, The 50th Law (with 50 Cent), The Art Of Seduction, and most recently, Mastery.

He recently took to Reddit to answer reader's questions on the site's "Ask Me Anything" section.

The questions touched on some eclectic topics, from the strategic legacy of Karl Rove, to whether sociopaths could misinterpret the more ruthless advice pieces of advice in his books.

We've picked out some of the best nuggets from the session. Questions have been edited for length and clarity.

What is your opinion of Karl Rove as a strategist?

"He had some brilliant ideas. His earlier career, before Bush, revealed his nefarious brilliance, his demonic quality. He over politicized the presidency, in other words, everything became a decision that had to mesh with campaign strategy. And he's a victim of his own success. He has failed to adapt to a new technological and demographic model and time has mercilessly exposed him. His debacle on air over Ohio was more than eloquent."

Source: Reddit

How important is college today?

"College is increasingly irrelevant. I would spend those years in college developing general thinking and writing skills. But once you leave college be prepared to start all over and let the real world educate you. Stop relying on books and learn how to observe people. Be hands on and develop real skills. Don't be afraid of failing and relish criticism. These are the kinds of things they don't teach in college."

What was working with 50 Cent like?

"I found being around 50 Cent unbelievably inspiring — his energy, his self-confidence and his overall love of life. It was like a drug, it would get under your skin you if you were around him long enough."

15 Companies That Originally Sold Something Completely Different From What Made Them Famous

tiffanys jewelry pearlsSome companies find their niche and stick to it. Others, though, have to adapt to changing markets in order to thrive. Here’s a look at some companies that switched industries at some point in their histories, usually for the better.

Avon once sold books.

David H. McConnell started Avon in 1886 without really meaning to. McConnell sold books door-to-door, but to lure in female customers he offered little gifts of perfume. Before long, the perfume McConnell was giving away had become more popular than the books he was selling, so he shifted focus and founded the California Perfume Company, which later became Avon.

Nokia once sold paper.

The telecom giant got its start in Finland in 1865, when Fredrik Idestam opened a pulp mill and started making paper on the banks of Tammerkoski. The company later bounced around a number of industries before getting serious about phones in the 1960s.

3M once sold minerals.

When the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company’s founders opened their business in Two Harbors, Minnesota in 1902, they weren’t selling Post-It Notes. The partners originally planned to sell the mineral corundum, an important ingredient in building grinding wheels, directly to manufacturers.

The New Abraham Lincoln Movie Doesn't Tell You He Made It His Mission To Advance Modern Warfare

Lincoln, military, defense

When we read Krislyn Placide's piece on Lincoln's modernization of war technology in Popular Science, we were fascinated.

It's no secret that Lincoln went with General Grant to lead the war because the officer understood the numbers. Grant would flood the battlefield with troops under tragic conditions, knowing that his losses didn't matter. The President and Grant knew there would be more troops to fill the Union ranks, and the South didn't have that luxury. Every man counted.

What Placide points out is that the log cabin president was a famous tinkerer who nudged the Union into attaining 16,000 patents during his term, and that many of those were for weapon advancements. The South issued a paltry 266.

Lincoln understood the numbers as well, and the more Confederate troops he could kill per battle, the better chance he stood of saving the nation.

This model, now in the Smithsonian, shows the lift Lincoln received Patent No. 6469 for after a boat taking him home to Illinois from Washington got stuck. The device was never manufactured

In 1861, Lincoln tested breech-loading rifles in the White House lawn. Unlike muzzle-loaders, the breech-loaders didn't require soldiers to stand-up, opening themselves to fire, to re-load

Despite Col. James Wolfe Ripley, the Army Ordnance Chief, telling the president the breech-loaders couldn't be produced in time, Lincoln told him to order them

BlackBerry phones are about to become even more irrelevant

Not only is your BlackBerry under-featured and under-powered compared to other top-tier smartphones out there, but it's also about to become completely irrelevant once RIM unveils its new mobile operating system, BlackBerry 10, early next year.

If you're a real BlackBerry believer, wait another two or three months.

BlackBerry PlayBook is and has always been a dud

One of the most-hyped consumer gadgets of all time is also one of the biggest duds. BlackBerry's PlayBook was slammed by reviewers for not having basic functions like calendar and email when it shipped. It took RIM nearly a year to add that functionality. But it was too little, too late.

Google Talk trumps AIM

Answers To 15 MORE Google Interview Questions That Made Geniuses Feel Dumb (GOOG)

Google employees, Googlers, holding balls

We've been publishing some of Google's old (now banned) interview questions this week.

The first set: 15 Google Interview Questions That Made Geniuses Feel Dumb

The second set: 15 MORE Google Interview Questions That Made Geniuses Feel Dumb

Here are the answers to the second set.

Every man in a village of 100 married couples has cheated on his wife…

Every wife in the village instantly knows when a man other than her husband has cheated, but does not know when her own husband has. The village has a law that does not allow for adultery. Any wife who can prove that her husband is unfaithful must kill him that very day. The women of the village would never disobey this law. One day, the queen of the village visits and announces that at least one husband has been unfaithful. What happens?

Answer, from reader Olivier Coudert:

The cheating husband problem is a classic recursion pb.

Once all the wives know there are at least 1 cheating husband, we can understand the process recursively. Let's assume that there is only 1 cheating husband. Then his wife doesn't see anybody cheating, so she knows he cheats, and she will kill him that very day. If there are 2 cheating husband, their wives know of one cheating husband, and must wait one day before concluding that their own husbands cheat (since no husband got killed the day of the announcement).

So with 100 cheating husbands, all life is good until 99 days later, when the 100 wives wives kill their unfaithful husband all on the same day.

If the probability of observing a car in 30 minutes on a highway is 0.95, what is the probability of observing a car in 10 minutes (assuming constant default probability)?

Reader ru offers this answer:

The trick here is that .95 is the probability for 1 or more cars, not the probability of seeing just one car.
The prob. of NO cars in 30 minutes is 0.05, so the prob of no cars in 10 minutes is the cube root of that, so the prob of seeing a car in 10 minutes is one minus *that*, or ~63%

Four people need to cross a rickety rope bridge to get back to their camp at night…

Unfortunately, they only have one flashlight and it only has enough light left for seventeen minutes. The bridge is too dangerous to cross without a flashlight, and it's only strong enough to support two people at any given time. Each of the campers walks at a different speed. One can cross the bridge in 1 minute, another in 2 minutes, the third in 5 minutes, and the slow poke takes 10 minutes to cross. How do the campers make it across in 17 minutes?

Answer, from an anonymous reader:

1 and 2 across (2 minutes)
1 goes back (3 minutes)
5 and 10 go across (13 minutes)
2 goes back (15 minutes)
1 and 2 cross (17 minutes) - and everyone safe and sound

When the U-2 "Dragon Lady" debuted in 1957 it was an astonishing piece of technological achievement.

Able to fly reconnaissance from more than 13-miles above the earth, gather data through all weather conditions any time of day or night, while staying beyond the reach of Soviet military — it was an unbelievable achievement.

The U-2 was so advanced for its time that it's still in service today, performing missions under the Air Force's 9th Reconnaissance Wing at Beale AFB in California, filling the gaps where the most advanced long range drones fall short.

An Israeli Reader Takes Us Inside A Tel Aviv Bomb Shelter

Gaza Iron Dome

Israel and Gaza have been trading blows for a few days now, and there have been many reports of air raid sirens in Tel Aviv.

What we at Business Insider here learned, is that many modern Israeli buildings have bomb shelters built into them.

Curious, we took to our network to see if we could get some photos of these shelters.

The following captions are from the Israeli behind the camera, Sara Schratz, who's been in Tel Aviv since the start of the conflict.

This shelter is for our entire building - 7 apartments total, about 15 people. It is kept locked regularly and one person in the building holds the key.

Only when the government moves the security level higher and an order is given to open the municipal shelters (located in parks, movie theater, public buildings) does this person unlock it (my husband had to knock on his door on Thursday and remind him)

I have yet to be in ours. We've had 2 sirens so far - the first was Thurs @ 640pm when I was still at my office. So everyone went into the stairwells (which are all concrete) and then down into the basement/parking garage under the building.
