Meet the Russian oligarchs who own the West's most famous brands

0
0

Tout 4*3

Russia's wealth disparity is off the charts. Just over 100 billionaires hold a third of the country's wealth

That's largely down to Russia's chaotic 1990s. Enterprising and ruthless men (and they are practically all men) took hold of huge chunks of the former Soviet Union's rapidly privatised industries, or made millions bringing in highly sought-after exports from the west.

More recently, they haven't limited their interests to Russia. In the past 15 years, a handful of oligarchs have been snapping up companies in the West, too.

Some of the oligarchs no longer call Russia home: They have moved to the UK and US, or other post-Soviet countries. But they've all gained major interests in Europe and North America, controlling flashy organisations like football clubs, and huge, under-the-public-radar industrial groups.

Alisher Usmanov - Arsenal

Usmanov is Russia's richest man, with most of his wealth coming from mining interests. He also owns Mail.ru, Russia's largest internet firm, and its second-largest mobile network operator.

Usmanov’s holding company, Red & White, owns about 30% of Arsenal’s shares. He splits that with Farhad Moshiri, another steel magnate.

That share has climbed from 14.65% when the holding company first bought in, slowly accelerating. He’s made comments in the past that indicate he’d like an even bigger stake. For now, US billionaire Stan Kroenke is the majority shareholder.

Alexander and Evgeny Lebedev - Evening Standard/Independent

34-year old Evgeny Lebedev and his father, Alexander Lebedev, are joint owners of British newspapers with a combined circulation of more than one million copies per day: The Independent, i, and the free Evening Standard make up an impressive UK media empire.

Russian oligarchs have made a big deal of expanding their influence in their home country (Alexander Lebedev is part owner of Russia’s liberal Novaya Gazeta), but foreign media empires are rarer. Lebedev built his fortune in banking, navigating Russia’s turbulent 1990s.

Oleg Deripaska - Strabag SE

Oleg Deripaska is chairman of RUSAL, the world’s largest aluminium company, and is closely connected with Russian politics. He made major investments in the construction of the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.

Deripaska now has a blocking minority of shares in Strabag: It’s not one of the most glamourous companies on the list, but it’s massive. It’s one of Europe’s biggest construction companies, with revenues of over €10 billion, and more than 70,000 employees.

London just approved a new plan for 'cycle superhighways' — here's what they'll look like

London Bike Lanes

London Mayor Boris Johnson just got final approval Wednesday for his ambitious plan to reshuffle the city's roads into a more cycling-friendly format. The plan includes the creation of "cycling superhighways" through the British capital.

Traffic lanes will be converted, new curbs installed, and parking spaces moved to put Johnson's plan for the bike lanes with dedicated traffic signals in place. "Quietways" will also be installed, which are less segregated bike lanes on streets with less traffic.

There will be two main highway lanes — one north-south, and another traveling east-west — and the project is expected to cost $240 million, according to Britain's ITV.

London Bike LanesThese improvements, all part of London's massive $6 billion Road Modernization Plan, will reshape and modernize some of London's busiest intersections and roads, creating a very different flow of traffic in the British capital.

London's City Hall has reportedly also admitted this may cause traffic disruptions for motorists, though this worry hasn't borne out in other cities with dedicated bike lanesSome taxi and business groups opposed the plan because of this, however, as well as the plan to ban vehicle turns at some intersections where turning is currently legal, according to the Guardian.

For a look at how drastically the roads will change, check out Transport for London's map of the changes below.

central london grid map

Johnson is famous for his championing of bike riding in London and was a main proponent of London's bike share program, which have been named "Boris bikes" in his honor. Cycling has doubled in London in recent years, but that rise is correlated with a rise in deaths from bicycle collisions with larger motor vehicles, according to NPR.

Whether you care more about the atmosphere or the food, picking the right restaurant for Valentine's Day dinner can be a stressful task.

And though Silicon Valley would usually remind you of bytes, not bites, there are still plenty of quality restaurants to choose from in this tech hub.

Our friends at The Infatuation helped us compile a list of the best Silicon Valley restaurants for date night.

These restaurants are bound to be a hot ticket this Valentine's Day.

Evvia

420 Emerson Street, Palo Alto

This Greek taverna is always crowded, but top-notch dishes like grilled octopus and moussaka make Evvia well worth the wait.

Zagat diners say that "everything's delicious," though it is a bit pricey.

Lure + Till

180 Hamilton Avenue, Palo Alto

Located on the ground floor of the new Epiphany Hotel, Lure + Till is a swanky restaurant serving up delicious New American dishes and craft cocktails.

The squid ink campanelle — served with lobster, dried cherry tomatoes, Calabrian chilis, botarga, and arugula — is a crowd favorite.

MLB POWER RANKINGS: Where every team stands one month before Spring Training

0
0

Bryce Harper

We are one month from the start of spring training and most teams are done making major moves.

So let's take a look at how all 30 teams are shaping up as the season approaches.

Using projection systems from BaseballProspectus.com (PECOTA) and Fangraphs.com, we have our first power ranking of the 2015 season.

1. Washington Nationals (96-66 in 2014)

2014 Regular Season Ranking: 2

2015 Projected Wins (Fangraphs): 91

2015 Projected Wins (PECOTA): 91

2015 Projected Runs Scored (change from 2014): 678 (-8)

2015 Projected Runs Allowed (change from 2014): 593 (+38)

Key offseason notes: The Nationals shocked the baseball world when they signed the top free agent available, Max Scherzer, to a 7-year, $210 million contract despite already having one of the top rotations in baseball.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers (94-68 in 2014)

2014 Regular Season Ranking: 4

2015 Projected Wins (Fangraphs): 91

2015 Projected Wins (PECOTA): 97

2015 Projected Runs Scored (change from 2014): 709 (-9)

2015 Projected Runs Allowed (change from 2014): 564 (-53)

Key offseason notes: New president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman has been busy since taking over the Dodgers having already acquired 16 players via trades. The biggest additions have been shortstop Jimmy Rollins, catcher Yasmani Grandal, and reliever Joel Peralta while freeing up the outfield logjam by trading away Matt Kemp. In addition, the Dodgers have also added to their enormous payroll by giving free agent pitcher Brandon McCarthy a 4-year, $48 million contract to add depth to an already strong rotation.

3. Seattle Mariners (87-75 in 2014)

2014 Regular Season Ranking: 11

2015 Projected Wins (Fangraphs): 89

2015 Projected Wins (PECOTA): 87

2015 Projected Runs Scored (change from 2014): 669 (+35)

2015 Projected Runs Allowed (change from 2014): 616 (+62)

Key offseason notes: The Mariners are the favorites in the American League thanks to an already strong pitching staff and an offense that should be much better with the addition of outfielder Nelson Cruz who hit 40 home runs for the Orioles last year.

This extreme winter survival course teaches service members how to stay alive in Arctic conditions

Arctic Survival School

Few places on the face of the earth can be as unforgiving or as deadly as the frozen Arctic.

Because of the dangers of the Arctic environment, coupled with the growing strategic importance of this part of the world, the US Air Force runs the Arctic Survival School out of Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska.

Each year, this five-day intensive training program, also known as Cool School, teaches over 700 servicemembers the survival skills necessary to fight back against nature and survive in the Arctic.

“Mother nature does not like you in this situation,” Survival Instructor Staff Sgt. Seth Reab, tells his students in the morning freeze. “She’s violent. She’s harsh. Your job is to survive until help comes; her job is to find a way to take your life.”

The Air Force's Cool School, which brings in more than 700 participants every year across all service branches, takes place outside Eielson Air Force Base, deep inside Alaska. Temperatures average about 30 degrees below zero.

At the start of the course, all participants are given the emergency equipment they would have depending upon what plane they would be flying.

The emergency equipment usually works. But everything else in the Arctic will try to kill the participants. This includes subzero temperatures ...

Forget a dozen red roses — these are the best flowers to buy for Valentine’s Day

0
0

When you think of Valentine’s Day flowers, chances are a dozen long-stem red roses come to mind.

But there’s almost nothing more boring than this traditional bouquet.

“Price-wise, roses go through the roof,” Nic Faitos of New York’s Starbright Floral Design told Business Insider. “A dozen roses is something that’s expected. You can think a little more creatively and get a better and bigger arrangement for your dollar if you do things a little bit differently."

Faitos has been in the floral industry for over 20 years and shared with us his five top picks for flowers that beat the classic red rose.

Green Cymbidium Orchid

Green Cymbidium OrchidFor couples who haven’t been dating too long, Faitos said to consider a green orchid known as Cymbidium.

“It’s the color of a Granny Smith apple,” he said. “It’s very cool, very modern, and it pairs well with purple flowers in a bouquet as an accent.”

These big blooms have traditionally been associated with love and beauty, which makes them even more fitting for Valentine’s Day. They’re also pretty robust, which means that not only will they not damage en route to your significant other, they’ll last up to three weeks in a vase.

French Tulips

tall tulipsFrench tulips are the giants of the tulip world.

These blooms are about the size of your outstretched hand if you put your fingers together, and as wide as a fist, Faitos told us. And with stems over three feet all, they dwarf typical tulips.

In addition to being much larger, these flowers make for memorable arrangements because of the way they grow in water.

“I like to say they dance in water,” Faitos said. “When they’re in the water, the stems continue to grow — literally overnight. They tangle with each other so your arrangement will look completely different than it did the previous day.”

Black Baccara Hybrid Tea Rose

Black Baccara Hybrid Tea RoseFor married or more serious couples, Faitos recommended buying an arrangement that would look gorgeous in the home. For an elegant, lush option, he said to look at the Black Baccara rose.

“It’s so dark burgundy that it’s magical,” Faitos said. “Cut the stems very short, get a short vase, and pack the roses tightly together with no greenery or other flowers.”

“This would be perfect to put in the middle of the dinner table,” he added. “The presentation is so luxurious that nothing could possibly compete with it.”

These will last two weeks in a vase and are a show-stopper compared to boring, red roses.

Hydrangeas

hydrangeasFaitos recommends these bountiful flowers, which make for a bigger (and cheaper) bouquet than standard roses.

Hydrangeas come in a variety of colors, from white to purple, and resemble big, round pompoms. We’d suggest getting a mix of these flowers to really let the colors pop.

Just be warned — hydrangeas need a lot of water to stay fresh in the vase.

Red Lion Amaryllis

Red Lion AmaryllisAmaryllis are a lovely alternative if you want to buy your date red flowers.

“There’s a variety of Amaryllis called Red Lion,” Faitos said. “It’s more like a candy apple red and is a super romantic, gorgeous flower with a stem length that competes with a long-stem rose.”

The Amaryllis will last at least two weeks, and looks especially striking with its green leaves and stems showing through in a clear vase.

If you’re still at a loss for what to get...

mothers day flowers...call your local florist and ask for a recommendation.

“There are so many options in flowers that no matter what your budget or price point, you can have something pretty and meaningful," Faitos said.

gotenna

Brooklyn isn't just for hipsters anymore.

Manhattan may be known as New York City's Silicon Alley, but Brooklyn — its neighbor to the east — is buzzing with startups too.

We rounded up some of the coolest startups in Brooklyn. They solve problems — like delivering your packages on your own time so you never miss the UPS guys again. They're also revolutionizing food, making podcasts into a big business, and delivering laundry on demand.

With GoTenna, you'll have WiFi — anywhere.

GoTenna is a pocket-sized device that promises to give you WiFi anywhere. The GoTenna device pairs up with your phone to let you communicate, even when you don't have service.

Cofounders Daniela and Jorge Perdomo came up with the idea for goTenna in the wake of Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. Months later, Daniela had created physical prototypes for a gadget to help people communicate even when they don't have cell phone service. GoTenna has raised $1.8 million in seed funding.

Livestream lets you watch events around the world in real time online.

At the end of May, Livestream moved its streaming services from its Google-owned property in Manhattan to the artistic neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn. There, the company occupies 30,000 square feet on two floors of a refurbished warehouse on Morgan Avenue.

About half of Livestream's employees live in Brooklyn, so the move made sense. Livestream is the first tech company in its neighborhood. The company has 140 employees total, most of whom work in Livestream's New York offices. But Livestream has offices worldwide, in places like Los Angeles, the U.K., Ukraine, and India.

Take a look at our tour of Livestream's offices here.

Gimlet Media is making podcasts a big business.

Podcast startup Gimlet Media was a natural choice for Alex Blumberg — he'd previously served as a producer on This American Life and was the co-founder of economics podcast series Planet Money.

Currently, Gimlet Media runs two podcasts: one is called Reply All and is about the internet, and the other is a show called StartUp, which talks about what it's like for Blumberg to start his own business. In November, Gimlet Media raised a $1.5 million round of seed funding from Lowercase Capital, Knight Enterprise Fund, and betaworks, and the company is rapidly expanding.

The biggest lies being told on British election posters right now

Prime Minister David Cameron Launches A New Conservative Poster

With the UK general election now less than 90 days away, the parties are inevitably training their guns — and their Photoshop skills — on each other.

But how do their claims stack up?

Business Insider has rounded up some Labour and Conservative campaign posters and put them through a fact-check.

It's not a pretty picture.

Conservative Claim #1: The deficit has been halved.

Well first, the road illustrating Britain's recovery is reportedly based on a photo of a road in Germany.

More importantly, the Conservative claim that the deficit has been halved is only partly true. In cash terms, the deficit has only been reduced by one-third, falling from £153 billion in 2009-10 to an estimated £91 billion for 2014-15. It is correct to say the deficit has been halved if measured as a share of the national income.

Stunning maps show what major cities would look like under hundreds of feet of water

0
0

Sea Level Rise Seattle

Sea-level rise is one of the most concerning consequences associated with global climate change, thanks to melting polar ice and thermal expansion caused by warming ocean waters — and we're already starting to see its effects on coastal communities around the world.

The US Geological Survey estimates that if all the world's glaciers melted, sea level would rise by about 80 meters, or more than 260 feet. This scenario could be thousands of years in the future, but it would render many of the world's best-loved coastal cities unrecognizable.

Jeffrey Linn, a Seattle man with a background in geography and urban planning, has created a series of maps of major US cities based on this doomsday scenario. He used actual geographic data from the areas to make the maps as realistic as possible.

Linn says his interest in the subject was sparked by the book "Always Coming Home," by Ursula Le Guin.

"The novel is sort of a future anthropology of California's Napa Valley, and in it she looks into the future and sees the California Central Valley flooded by sea-level rise," Linn says. "Since then, I would often think about what would the world around us would look like once all the ice caps melted."

While this extreme amount of sea-level rise isn't expected to happen for millennia, Linn's cheeky names for the potential new landforms and bodies of water that emerge in his maps give often humorous insight into life in the cities of the future.

Linn has mapped eight US cities so far, and is currently working on mapping several locations in the UK. His maps, along with more information, can be viewed on his website. We've put together a slideshow of some of his work here.

Seattle was the first sea-level rise map Linn made, completed in December 2013. He was inspired to start the map by a blogger who writes under the name Burrito Justice. "He did a 200-foot sea-level rise map for San Francisco, and I was like, 'I have to do this for Seattle,'" Linn says.

The result is striking — after 240 feet of sea-level rise, Seattle is reduced to a collection of small islands, like these three, which emerged in the area near the place Seattle's iconic space needle stands today. (The needle, in this map, is sadly submerged.)

Linn uses open-source data to create most of the maps. He puts the data together using a mapping program called QGIS, and then assembles everything in Adobe Illustrator. He says the base cartography only takes him a few hours.

Look at all the crazy weapons Russians carry on the subway

0

Russian Metro Weapons.18

Knives, guns, and machetes. That's not the shopping list of a serial killer, just a few of the things that Russians carry on the subway with them every day.

Photographer Oleg Ponomarev from The Calvert Journal took these X-ray pictures of the bags people carry during their commute on trains in St. Petersburg. There are plenty of normal things, like milk bottles and bread loaves. But there are plenty of weapons, too.

The author says his art project shows the paradox of the Russian security surveillance system. "There are more and more different means of state control and surveillance, from cameras on buildings to social media monitoring, which are meant to create order, but people still don't feel safe, so they have to carry weapons," he said.

The Calvert Journal is an online magazine about Russian art and design based in London.

This bag, found on a Saturday night in St. Petersburg's Central district, contains an AKM Airsoft machine gun (it's like a paintball gun), a bag of pellets, and a can of Spam.

The pictures are taken from busy stations in St. Petersburg that have a small X-ray machine to let police perform random checks. This kitchen knife was found in the Moskovsky district on a Tuesday morning.

The following captions describe when and where the weapons were found: Traumatic pistol (a type of gas-powered non-lethal self-defence weapon; model unknown), glasses, walkie talkie. Moskovsky district, Friday afternoon.

The 11 most ambitious virtual computers ever built inside Minecraft

Most people in Minecraft are content to build mud castles and sheep pens. But some gamers yearn for more. These folks have taken things a step further by building virtual computers inside the video game.

A virtual computer typically has the same functionality as the physical machine it's replicating, but rather than being built out of wires and silicon, its simulated inside another program and is powered by virtual signals instead of electricity.

Minecraft is not the only video game where people have built virtual computers, but it provides some of the most ambitious examples. With the right material, almost all of these creations would be replicable in real life.

This 16-bit computer has all the basic components of a real computer: 256 bytes of ROM, 32 bytes of RAM, and a processor. In lieu of electricity, it's powered with signals sent through "redstone," a material in Minecraft that can transmit a basic on/off binary signal, just like in real computer components.

We pitted an iPhone camera against a point-and-shoot and a DSLR to see if there's really any difference

Iphone vs DSLR graphic

Smartphone cameras have gotten so good that many people don't see the need for traditional cameras — and the truth is that for many people there is no need. But devoted cameras have to have some advantages, right?

We matched an iPhone 6 camera against the DSLR Canon 5D Mark II ($3,000 for the body alone) and the point-and-shoot Canon PowerShot SD1400-IS ($169).

We tested the cameras in various situations, including bright sunny day, moving objects, close up, etc. Don't expect techie jargon or focus charts here. We're just considering what looks best.

Here are the contenders. Starting from the left is the iPhone 6, the Canon 5D Mark II, and the Canon PowerShot SD1400-IS.

We started with a shot inside the office. Fluorescent light can be tricky for cameras to read. On a DSLR, you can change settings depending what kind of light a shot has, and we were able to produce this picture.

The point and shoot camera sees the fluorescent lighting more yellow.

19 gifts guys secretly want for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and men deserve gifts that show how much they're loved just as much as women do.

We asked our coworkers, fathers, and friends what they want most for Valentine's Day.

And though a lot of the suggestions were extremely practical, that doesn't mean they're not romantic. Just knowing what your guy likes or needs will let him know how much you care.

For the early riser, make sure his coffee never goes cold again.

Sure it's practical, but one of our reporters said the Thermos his girlfriend bought him was one of the best gifts he's received in years.

This highly recommended stainless steel Thermos has a double-wall vacuum insulation so it can keep hot or cold beverages at a steady temperature for up to 24 hours. No more tepid coffee.

Buy it: $25 at Target

Give the gift that gives back with a pair of boxers.

A pair of high-quality underwear is both a practical and romantic gift: he gets a new set, and you get to watch him try them on.

One of BI's writers says that Vineyard Vines boxers are "The best boxers in the world." And while we're sure that title is up for debate among many, the high-quality and soft fabric make these a safe bet.
