General Yermolov Cadet School

In Russia's Southern city of Stavropol, children can attend a school that rewards academics with military-style field exercises like overnight camp-outs, weapons training and maintenance, and even parachuting.

The General Yermolov Cadet School, named after Alexei Yermolov, a former Russian general and hero of the Caucasus War, teaches boys and girls a normal curriculum mixed with patriotism, military discipline, and maneuvers.

In the pictures below, see how the cadet school molds Russian youths into soldiers.

What to do if your phone gets stolen abroad

$
0
0

guy on phoneAccording to technology solutions company, Asurion, 19 million phones are lost or stolen each year, and traveling puts you at higher risk for theft. Don’t wait until it’s too late—know what to do if your phone is lost or stolen on a trip so you can recover faster, protect your identity, and not lose all those great vacation photos.

Call and text your phone.

Once you realize your phone is gone, immediately call and text your number. This simple step is an easy way to see if someone has turned it in. Hopefully you're traveling with a companion whose phone you can use; otherwise ask the hotel front desk to use the phone. You can also text or leave a voicemail on the phone with your information and a number to call back.

With the latest iOS update, Apple included a feature called Lost Mode that will remotely lock your device with a passcode and display a custom message on the lock screen. This mode can also suspend the ability to make payments via Apple Pay.

Use find-my-phone feature.

The find-my-phone feature is available on both iPhone and Android and can help recover a lost or stolen phone. If you have this feature turned on or installed, you'll be able to see where the phone is remotely by logging into your Apple or Google account on another device. You'll also be able to play a sound from your phone. If you have Family Sharing with Apple, other users on your account will be able to see where your phone is.

If the phone is off or offline, unfortunately it means that tracking is not available.

Erase it.

If you can't track your phone or know it has been stolen, you should wipe its data. Though it will mean losing any data you don't have backed up, it's the best way to ensure your identity and information are protected. You can wipe your phone remotely within the find-my-phone app on both iOS and Andriod. If your device is offline when you perform a remote erase, the erase will occur when the phone is turned back on.

Important Note for Apple Users: Once you erase your phone, you can't track it anymore. If you try and remove your device from your Apple account while it'soffline, it will reappear in Find My iPhone. If you remove your device from your Apple account while the phone is online, the activation lock will be turned off, which means another person could activate the phone.

7 jobs that will allow you to travel the world

Practicality vs. doing what you love is a normal and ever so frequent inner battle we all have. For those of us who love to travel, it becomes challenging to maintain your idyllic lifestyle without an endless pot of money, available to dip into whenever you want.

Getting your head down and working hard throughout your winter/summer and saving every penny to then travel the rest of the year is one way to do it. But what do you do if you want to prolong your travel or maintain that lifestyle for a year or more or… forever?

Here’s a list, in no particular order, of ways to make money for traveling:

1. Become a Holiday Rep

No, not necessarily the kind of holiday rep at booze-fuelled locations in Europe. Becoming a holiday rep is killing two birds with one stone; you get to earn money AND travel at the same time.

There are plenty of holiday agencies out there, like Neilson Holidays for example, which offer vacancies for all types of people, whether you’re into water sports, fitness, cycling, or more of a winter sports kind of person. You’ll not make huge amounts of money this way, but you will earn enough to live and you’ll be out making new friends for life while abroad.

2. Become a Freelance ANYTHING

Got a skill? Monetize it. If you’re really serious about wanting to earn enough money to sustain a travel lifestyle, you will find a way to make money from one of your passions or skills. Budding photographer? Check out someplaces you can sell your pictures as stock images. Maybe you know how to fix things? Sell yourself as a handy DIY person. We could make a huuuuge list about all the skills you can sell without requiring a big set-up. Get a pen and paper and start thinking.

3. Work as an Au Pair

For this one, you’ll enjoy working with children as the job is essentially a nanny/baby sitting service. Working as an au pair means you will often work for a wealthy family and can sometimes include teaching their child(ren) English as a second language depending on which country you’re in. Check out the International Au Pair Association for help on how to go about it.

Twelve reasons to travel during maternity leave

travel on maternity leave 8There are a number of people that won’t agree with traveling during maternity leave. I have learnt this through the backlash I received in the media when our story went viral a few months ago. Peoples concerns were always the same – “Your selfish, this is about you, not the baby” or “What about travel vaccinations?” or “How did you finance it?” I felt I could answer everyone’s questions but essentially it’s each to their own I say! No harm came to Esmé and we had the most amazing first year of her life, all together as a family. As many of you will know, we packed up our home when our new born was ten-weeks old, sold our car and rented out the house to travel. We started our trip off with visiting Singapore first, a few months in New Zealand followed by an epic journey commencing in Australia and through a large proportion of South East Asia. All before our daughter turned 1! I know many people have envied our trip because they may have been too scared to do it themselves. It’s been so lovely for us to hear we have already inspired many others to take the leap since they’ve heard our story. Let me see if I can help you to make the decision with our twelve reasons to travel during maternity leave.

1. When else will you have this period of time off again?

I just feel it’s an opportunity not to be missed. Now, I know mums outside the U.K have different maternity leave entitlements so it makes it near on impossible to do what we did if you live in America for example. However for the rest of us from the other places where we have a year off, why not do something different?

2. You do not have to maintain a household

This is something I just loved! No cleaning or dealing with general household administration whilst trying to get use to being a new mum.

3. You can have quality, uninterrupted time as a family

We did it together rather than doing it alone on my maternity leave.

These are the 9 most popular weed strains in Colorado

marijuana cannabis

Recreational marijuana has been on the Colorado market for over two years now, and we're starting to get some interesting data about the preferences of its consumers.

Tradiv, an online cannabis-distribution platform, and BDS Analytics, a cannabis-focused analytics company, teamed up to release a report outlining the most popular marijuana strains in the legal Colorado market.

Marijuana comes in two distinct species, sativa and indica, and they're thought to have different effects on your mind and body.

Many of those effects, however, are user-reported, and the science isn't totally clear on how the particular compounds in the marijuana actually interact with your brain, as Business Insider's Melia Robinson reported.

Generally speaking, sativa strains are considered to be energizing "head" highs, while indica strains are more subdued "body" highs, helpful for putting you to sleep.

Blue Dream, the top-selling strain, is a "pretty potent sativa," John Manlove, the director of sales at Tradiv told Business Insider over the phone.

Consumers like it because it gives them an "energetic" high, Manlove said. But it's not only popular because of consumers — it's also easy to grow and cultivate.

"It's not a fickle strain," Manlove said. "It's not very susceptible to mold and pests, and the common stresses on a plant."

More importantly, it's a high-yielding strain, so for cultivators, the economics of growing Blue Dream make sense.

The report itself is based off of point-of-sale data from a sample of Colorado cannabis retailers that represent 15% to 20% of the market. The sample was then fed through a proprietary algorithm to represent the whole market, Liz Stahura, the vice president of BDS Analytics, told Business Insider in an email.

See the 9 top-selling strains in Colorado below

Editor's note: While the science remains murky and various strains affect different people in different ways, we pulled product descriptions from Leafly, a popular strain-reviewing website.

9. Hell's Angel OG

Hell's Angel OG is an indica-dominant hybrid strain, which produces large, heavy buds, and its effects hit you "quickly and heavily."

8. Green Crack

Green Crack is a sativa strain that will give smokers a strong burst of energy. It'll help you increase your focus during the day.

7. Northern Lights

Northern Lights is a pure indica strain. It's known for its relaxing effects, which cause a "dreamy euphoria" that "settles in the body." It's good for relieving stress and helping you sleep after a long day.

This presidential election may have the most lopsided batch of newspaper endorsements the US has ever seen.

While Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has garnered the support of a long list of editorial boards, her Republican rival Donald Trump hasn't received any. LibertariancandidateGaryJohnsonhassix.

A number of conservative-leaning papers have even cautioned voters against putting Trump in office, and said they too are "with her."

Trump did receive the endorsement of four major newspapers in the Republican primaries, but they have yet to double down on their support for the general election on November 8.

Clinton received over 80 newspaper endorsements during the Democratic primaries, and many editorial boards have since reiterated their conviction that she should be the next president, not Trump, now that they know those are the two major-party options.

Some of the papers, including The Desert Sun and The Houston Chronicle rarely endorse Democrats — but 2016 is no regular election cycle.

There's bound to be more endorsements as election day nears, but here's what she has so far:

Here's how much the top Wall Street banks have earned in fees this year

$

Jamie Dimon

JPMorgan is leading the pack when it comes to Wall Street dealmaking revenues, according to Dealogic's preliminary league tables for the first nine months of the year.

Altogether, global investment banking revenue was down 14% from the same period last year. That is improvement on the first half, where revenues came in 16% lower than the previous years.

League tables are a contentious subject on Wall Street.

Banks use them when pitching for new business, and a good ranking means serious bragging rights. But the league table-data can also be sliced up to make a bank's performance look better (by narrowing the field very narrowly, for example).

Though they're based on estimates, these tables are the broadest possible and a closely-watched indicator of who is up and who is down.

Here's how the banks stacked up this time around.

JPMorgan ranked first for overall investment banking revenues

JPMorgan has a 8.1% market share and $4.1 billion in total revenues for the year to September 26. It was followed by rival Goldman Sachs, with $3.4 billion and a 6.8% share. Bank of America was in third place, with $3.2 billion.

Global investment banking revenue was $50.7 billion for the first nine months of 2015, which was down 14% compared to the same period last year.

JPMorgan also ranked first for revenue in debt capital markets

JPMorgan has made $1.1 billion in revenue in debt capital markets, giving it an 6.9% share. Bank of America followed, with $1.1 billion in fees, and Citi raked in $923 million to place third.

Global DCM volumes hit the $5 trillion earlier this month, putting 2016 on track to beat the 2006 full year record high of $6.62 trillion.

And in equity capital markets

JPMorgan had a 8% share in equity capital markets, followed by Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs.

Global equity capital markets volumes, at $512.7 billion, was the lowest since 2012.

Young people working at Google's office

Google is known for offering appealing perks, great pay, and an exceptional workplace culture — so it's no surprise that undergraduate business students find the search behemoth to be the most desirable employer.

Earlier this year, Universum, a global research and advisory firm, surveyed about 100,000 of these undergraduates across the globe and asked them to choose the companies and organizations they'd most like to work for.

Universum then put together a ranking of the most desirable employers, based on the number of undergraduate business students who chose a company as one of their dream employers.

Google, which specializes in online advertising technologies, cloud computing, software, and, of course, search, landed at the top of the list for a second consecutive year.

Apple, EY, Goldman Sachs, and PwC rounded out the top five.

1. How often should I wash my hair?

The short answer? Nobody needs to wash their hair everyday. Beyond that, it depends on your skin type: if you have normal or dry skin, once or twice a week should do the trick.

2. How often should I brush my teeth?

The American Dental Association recommends you brush twice a day for two minutes, although they don’t specify what time of day these brushing should happen. So long as you do a good brushing before bed, you should be set. While you sleep, your mouth salivates less, which can lead to cavities.

3. When's the best time to put on antiperspirant or deodorant?

The ideal time is right before you go to sleep. That way, if you’re using an antiperspirant, it has time to close your armpit’s sweat ducts before they have a chance to get sweating in the morning. Most last at least 24 hours, so no worries about not making it to the end of the workday.

DON'T MISS: Hubble may have caught jets of water squirting out of a potentially habitable moon

Thank you very much for having me, look forward to talking about the SpaceX Mars architecture.

And what I really want to try to achieve here is to make Mars seem possible, make it seem as though it's something that we can do in our lifetimes — and that you can go, and is there really a way that anyone can go if they wanted to? I think that's really the important thing.

So first of all, why go anywhere, right? The... I think there are really two fundamental paths. History is going to bifurcate along two directions: One path is we stay on Earth forever, and then there will be some eventual extinction event — I don't have an immediate doomsday prophecy — but there's... it's eventually, history just that there will be some doomsday event.

The alternative is to become a space-faring civilization and a multi-planet species, which I hope you agree that is the right way to go.

Yes?

That's what we want.

So how do we figure out how to take you to Mars and create a self-sustaining city? A city that it is not merely an outpost, but could become planet and its own right, and thus we could become a truly multi-planet species.

We Can Do It! Rosie the Riveter"We can do it!"

That's the slogan that appeared alongside fictional icon "Rosie the Riveter" during the famous WWII-era advertising campaign targeted toward American women on the home front.

"Rosie" was just one part of the US propaganda effort to encourage women to take on traditionally male-dominated occupations — especially in the field of war supply production — as mass conscription depleted the workforce.

The message took hold. By 1945, almost one out of four married women worked outside the home, according to History.com. However, once peace was restored, many women found themselves ousted from their wartime jobs.

Here are pictures of some of the real life women who helped make the war effort possible, all taken from 1941 to 1943. These images and captions are all courtesy of the Library of Congress.

The two most important aspects of building a successful football team are to find a franchise quarterback and to manager the team's salary cap.

Because of how the NFL's quirky salary-cap system works, large contracts often come with large signing bonuses. The result is that the highest-paid players fluctuate from year to year, and it tends to favor those who signed deals recently.

For 15 teams, their highest-paid player is a quarterback. The rest of the players who top their team's payroll includes six defensive linemen, five offensive linemen, two cornerbacks, two linebackers, one safety, and one running back.

Here are the 32 players who will make the most money on their respective teams this season.

32. Joe Haden, Cleveland Browns — $10,200,000

2016 earnings breakdown: $10.1 million salary and $100,000 workout bonus.

Make time for each other.

"Continue to date each other and don't get stuck in the monotony of life. It's crucial to go on dates and be spontaneous with one another," Danielle Weibert, 31, who's married to her high school boyfriend James, 30, told INSIDER.

But not too much time.

Spending some time away from your partner can be a good thing, too.

"Because we went to college so far apart, we grew up separately but never grew apart," Kirsten, 26, who's engaged her high school sweetheart Andrew, 27, told INSIDER. (For privacy reasons, Kirsten and Andrew asked that we use only their first names.)

"It gave us the opportunity to make our own friends, navigate adulthood, and learn independence," she went on. "We still try to encourage independence and growth. We don't feel guilty about doing things on our own."

Judy and John Caras, who've been together since their freshman year in 1971 (that's 45 years total!), echoed this sentiment.

"Many couples resent the time their spouse may have away from them. We have always encouraged and supported each other to get out more," Judy said. "If John wanted an weekend either golfing or fishing with his friends or I wanted a weekend away with the girls, it was viewed as a good thing and healthy for our relationship."

Communicate when it matters — but let the little things go.

No surprise here: The bedrock of a long-lasting relationship is open communication. And that doesn't mean nodding along while your partner talks, waiting for the first available moment to interject — it means really slowing down to hear what he or she is saying.

That's how Kim and Doug Heaton, both 53, make their marriage work.

"The best habit to keep a relationship long-lasting is a solid, open, and respectful communication line," they told INSIDER. "You must speak out on what you don’t like as well as what you do like and listen to one another. Sometimes this requires a little time to think about what the other one wants."

Other couples said there's value in knowing when to hold your tongue.

"Obviously open communication in important, but at the same time, so is knowing when not to say something," said Haley Venditti, 27, who met her husband Jack (also 27) when they were both in middle school. "There are so many little things you could blow up and argue about, but sometimes you're better off just not saying anything."
