greece protests riots 2-2012

Skyrocketing inflation, widespread corruption, a continent-wide economic crisis, and poor IT infrastructure are some of the problems for the 10 lowest ranked countries in Grant Thornton's Global Dynamism Index.

Every country doesn't have all of those problems, but these 10 have had the poorest performance in the measures that business leaders consider most important over the last 12 months.

10. Indonesia

Dynamism score: 50.7

Weakest area: Indonesia's science and technology environment was the third worst in the survey.

Indonesia's economic expansion is weighed down by poor research spending, problems finding financing, and an unfriendly operating environment for businesses.

Source: Grant Thornton LLC

9. Columbia

Dynamism score: 50.2

Weakest area: Columbia's science and technology environment was sixth from the bottom.

Poor infrastructure and minimal research spending hurt Colombia's ranking.

8. Russia

Dynamism score: 50

Weakest area: Russia was third from the bottom for its financing environment.

High levels of corruption hurt Russia, despite its relatively strong economic growth. Getting financing can be an issue as well.

Inside The Bizarre World Of Sexy Halloween Costumes ... For Pets

pet dog costume halloween

The costume-booze industrial complex long ago repurposed Halloween from a night about chills into an opportunity for women to dress in "sexy," "sassy," and sometimes "sultry" outfits, rather than scary ones.

While we've grown immune to shops shilling everything from sexy cop to sexy Bert and Ernie (yes, that Bert and Ernie) garb, there's one recent trend that we can't get used to ... sexy costumes for pets.

Americans spent $310 million on pet costumes last year, and some showed a little too much fur.

Under normal circumstances, there's nothing better than a dog in a costume. Who doesn't love a puppy dressed up as zebra, for example?

Well, the days of Innocent dog costumes are over.

It used to be just female homo sapiens who got to wear revealing costumes ...

Park Your Yacht In The Front Yard At This Incredible New House in Poland

MOOMOO Architects Yacht House

What's a luxury house without the ultimate parking space?

We've shown you the Singapore high-rise that allows you to park your car in the living room, but this Yacht House by Polish architecture firm MOOMOO Architects takes it to the next level.

The firm designed a home in Poland that has a parking space for a yacht (or any boat, really) in the front yard.

A water canal runs through the central design of the house and the house includes a lock lift that would allow the boat to sail along the window line of the kitchen and living room.

The U-shaped house, which is currently undergoing construction, is 700 square meters (not including storage rooms and the garage), and will be embedded on a steep slope that is close to the shoreline, giving unparalleled views of the water. The home is being built for for private clients.

This schematic shows how the yacht would be parked. The lock lift rises once the boat is docked to secure it from drifting away.

The inspiration for the working canal came when the Polish architects learned of their clients' love for motor yachts.

A look at the house from the side shows how the yacht would sail past the lower-level windows of the house.

Media mogul John Malone owns land equivalent to twice the state of Delaware or 151 times the island of Manhattan.

Malone's 2.2 million acre empire is the largest private landholding in the country, according to The 2012 Land Report. His lands range from forests, dessert, islands, to ports.

And while many of the largest landholders in the country have held their land for decades, Malone acquired most of his land recently. Malone purchased the 290,000-acre New Mexico Bell Ranch in 2010 and over 1-million acres of Maine and New Hampshire wilderness in 2011.

Malone owns around 500,000 acres in Colorado, including the Greenland Ranch, shown here, off I-25 between Denver and Colorado City.

Awesome Old-Timey Photos Show You How Much Less Intense The World Series Was 100 Years Ago

classic world series MLB baseball players

The Library of Congress has a great collection of old World Series photos.

When taken together, they give you a glimpse of what the Fall Classic was like 100 years ago — when the players were miniature versions of the sculpted athletes we see today, the ballparks were stuffed with fans in suits, and the atmosphere was decidedly more relaxed.

Clicking through these pictures induces a bit of nostalgia, and gives you a stark contrast to what you'll see on Fox tonight when the Tigers and the Giants match up.

Obama Has Released A 27-Point Plan For His Second Term, And It's A Doozy

$

Barack Obama

After failing to deliver a line by line economic plan, the Obama campaign stepped up to the plate this week and delivered a glossy memo with 27 points on how he would use a second term in office.

It's called The New Economic Patriotism: A Plan For Jobs & Middle-Class Security and millions of copies have been printed and shipped off to swing states.

The plan is broken up into seven different parts, focusing on topics that include manufacturing, energy, small businesses, education, taxes and the deficit, healthcare, and Medicare and Social Security. While a lot of crucial details are still missing, it's a start to understanding what another four years under Obama would like.

For voters who can't get their hands on a copy, we've broken down the points here.

Lower the corporate tax rate

In the plan, Obama touts the growth in the manufacturing sector over the last four years, and says that his new goal is to add 1 million new manufacturing jobs by 2016.

The first point of his five point plan on manufacturing is to lower the corporate tax rate — which now stands at a maximum of 35% — by a quarter for domestic manufacturers:

[Reform] the corporate tax code to bring down tax rates – cutting tax rates on domestic manufacturers by nearly a quarter – while closing tax preferences and loopholes to pay for it.

This would bring the tax rate for manufacturers down to 26.25%

Source: The New Economic Patriotism Plan

End deductions for outsourcing companies

Right now companies can claim a deduction on their taxes for a portion of the cost of exporting operations abroad, as the move offshore is considered a business expense.

Obama wants to end that deduction:

[End] tax deductions for companies shipping jobs overseas, and using the savings to create a new tax credit for companies that bring jobs home.

The new tax credit, according to the White House website, would be for 20% of the cost of moving business operations back to the States.

Source: The New Economic Patriotism Plan

Fight China' s unfair trade practices

For the third point of his manufacturing plan, Obama wants to create a new enforcement force devoted exclusively to Chinese trade by 2016.

According to the document, the president is already aggressively pursuing trade litigation against China:

President Obama brought more trade cases against China in four years than the previous president did in eight years and won every one of them that has been decided.

Here's What 8 Economic Cycle Theories Say About The World Today

$
0
0

joseph schumpeter

Economic and market phenomena occur in cycles.

The basic business cycle can be loosely defined a series of economic expansions and contractions.

But how long are these cycles and how can they be applied?

We compiled eight "cycle" theories that tell us varying things about where markets and the economy are going.

Some have been around for decades, others are fairly new.

One is even based on sun spots.

The Kondratiev Cycle

Creator: Nikolai Kondratiev (1892-1938)

Duration: 50-60 years

Theory: Economic growth in capitalist countries comes in long waves and are determined by technological innovations.

What it predicts: Prices, interest rates, foreign trade, coal, pig iron production

Where we are now: The Kondtratiev cycle indicates we're in a blank period and at least 30 years away from the next economic expansion period.

Source: Andrey V. Korotayev

The Schumpeter Cycle

Creator: Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950)

Duration: 50-60 years

Theory: Shumpeter cycles actually revolve around periodic clusters of innovation”

What it predicts: Global economic paradigms

Where we are now: Schumpeter's cycle says we're on the downswing from the most recent innovation cluster.

Source: Andrey V. Korotayev

The Kitchin Cycle

Creator: Joseph Kitchin (1861-1932)

Duration: 40 months

Theory: The market gets ‘flooded’ with commodities as growth accelerates. When demand declines, prices drop and the produced commodities get accumulated in inventories. But there is a delay between this and when entrepreneurs must reduce output.

What it predicts: Demand, prices, output

Where we are now: The Kitchin cycle indicates prices are in an upswing period, according toTimingSolution.com.

Firefights Like This Are Why US Troops Never Leave Home Without A 'SAW'

$
0
0

M249 FUNKER530 aiming shot muzzle flash fire

Everyone carries stuff with them to work. Some of it we can forget and go without; other things like a cellphone, we go back for, because we just can't go through the day without it.

What troops on the ground in Afghanistan can't go without is the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW).

Check out this SAW gunner in action >

Every day is routine for deployed U.S. troops. They pull duty, maintain their gear, and they go on patrol — day in and day out — until all hell breaks loose and a world of insurgents are trying to kill them.

When that happens, the SAW can effectively blanket an area with up to 120 rounds per minute. That's two 5.56mm bullets slipping from the barrel every second — fed from a 200 round belt — inside a quick-change drum.

U.S. troops call it a "Wall of Steel" that has saved more American lives than they can count.

When it works.

The SAW is flawed: Parts break off, it's hard to clean, it jams, and like all machine guns it overheats to the point of uselessness, and changing the barrel isn't always an option.

But like an old cellphone we keep until the plan renews, the SAW is what U.S. troops have until something better comes along.

The following slides are from a firefight with a U.S. Army unit at Combat Outpost Charkh in Afghanistan, and some infrared shots at an indoor range.

Like most attacks, this one begins suddenly and the soldier wearing the helmet camera quickly lifts his SAW to fire from behind this wall

Despite being loved for its lethal firepower the SAW is no joy to lug around — it weighs 22 pounds with its 200 round ammo drum attached. "A hell of a lot of weight to move around when the s*** gets thick," one infantryman commented.

Most SAW gunners carry 600 rounds, and in this Afghan firefight against an unknown number of insurgents, that isn't enough

9 Reasons You Shouldn't Rush Into Retirement

$
0
0

boomer-man

If anything has been a casualty of the Great Recession, it's America's traditional vision of retirement–– clocking out at age 65, cruises every other month and a condo in Florida.

Instead, workers today are coming to grips with the very realistic notion that they may work well into their 70s.

But is that really such a bad thing?

"Yes, for some people continuing to work is an economic necessity due to shrinking nest eggs and rising medical costs," Kevin Budd, executive editor of AARP The Magazine, told Business Insider

"But as people not only live longer, but continue to feel healthy, why slow down? The rocking chair is out, entrepreneurship is in: older Americans are driving much of the growth in new businesses. People want to feel productive, regardless of age."

It will make you fat

Researchers have found a link between approaching retirement age and expanding waistlines.

"People who are close to retirement age show the highest rates of weight gain and obesity," write the authors of "The Effect of Retirement On Weight," published in the Journal of Psychological Science.

More than 37,000 individuals aged 50 to 71 were analyzed over a 10 year period. Retirees averaged a 0.24 increase in their Body Mass Index.

"Given the increasing number of people approaching retirement age, the population level impact of the weight gain ascribed to retirement on health outcomes and health care system might be significant," they conclude.

You've relied on your partner for financial security

In the same University of Missouri study, Prof. Yao found spouses who retire around the same time could be setting themselves up for financial failure.

“It makes sense that many married couples would want to retire around the same time,” Yao says. “However, if both spouses decide to retire close to the end of an up market, the household would have little to no cushion should their retirement portfolios be affected by an economic downturn.”

That's not to say couples can't sail off into retirement together, but it further drives home the need to carefully plan out each step of the road to retirement –– hopefully under guidance from a financial planner or at least with a carefully calculated retirement savings goal in mind.

It can lead to early death

In a study led by University of Zurich economist Josef Zweimuller, researchers found groups of blue collar workers who retired three years earlier than a control group had far higher mortality rates.

In fact, for every year of early retirement, they shaved about two months off their lives.

Zweimuller and his fellow researchers attributed the trend to decreased mobility, which, including aforementioned weight gain, can lead to depleted cardiovascular and mental health.

How Taylor Swift Conquered The Music World By Age 22

$

Taylor Swift

She may never ever be getting back together with ex-boyfriends, but Taylor Swift's also never ever getting away from the top of the Billboard charts.

Taylor Swift has barely been on the music scene for a decade; however, she already has two Guinness world records, three successful albums, and six Grammys.

Though there's still a long road ahead to catch up to Beyonce's 16 golden trophies, at 22, the singer is well on her way.

Swift dominated the music stage in 2009 with her Fearless album the year prior, and now, after more than a year on tour she's back to break more records with new cd "Red" out this week.

With more than 260,000 sales on day one, the release of album number four is already looking like another record setter for Swift, something that could be an early indication more Grammy gold is in her future.

2004: At the age of 14, Swift moved out to Nashville and became the youngest songwriter to be hired by the Sony/ATV Tree Publishing House.

2006: At 16, Swift released her first single "Tim McGraw." The song climbed to No.6 on Billboard Magazine's Hot Country Songs chart.

(Source: CMT)

October 2006: When Swift's debut album came onto the music scene it peaked at No.1 on the Billboard top country albums chart and at No.5 on the Billboard 200 list.

It was at the top of the country charts for 24 weeks. She joins the Dixie Chicks and Carrie Underwood to achieve the same honor in this decade.

Lenovo Windows 8 thinkpad opened with keyboard

On Friday, Windows 8, the long-awaited new operating system from Microsoft, will be here.

One key new feature: There's a store from Microsoft where you can download apps, just like you do on smartphones and tablets.

Microsoft's Windows 8 App Store is still pretty bare, but more apps are being added daily. We've scanned the early crop and picked the best ones, ranging from work productivity apps to some fun timewasters.

Box for cloud storage and collaboration

Windows 8 integrates with Microsoft's own cloud storage, SkyDrive. But if you are a Box user, the enterprise storage and collaboration service has a Windows 8 app ready to go which will sync files and give you access to other Box features.

Publisher: Box

Remote Desktop lets you access your PC over the Internet from anywhere

Need to tap into another Windows PC to grab a file? Want to watch a video stored on your kid's Windows PC? Microsoft's Remote Desktop app lets you do those things.

Publisher: Microsoft

Evernote lets you keep track of your life

Evernote is awesome for taking shorter notes—links, videos, to-do lists, photos, even grocery lists—and it can sync them between all of your devices—phone, tablets, and PCs. It even offers a paid service for transcribing audio files.

Some versions of Windows 8 come with the Office 13 suite, including an app called OneNote, which is fine for taking notes during meeting. But Evernote has it beat for keeping tabs on more kinds of information you want to remember.

THE SILICON ALLEY 100: The Coolest People In New York Tech This Year

$

silicon alley 100 2012

In the past few years, New York City has become a tech hotspot. And while it hasn't had any LinkedIn or Facebook-size exits, it has produced a few IPOs and near-billion-dollar acquisitions.

It's become the home to some of tech's most promising new companies, from Etsy to Makerbot to Kickstarter. Early stage investors like David Tisch, Joshua Kushner, First Round Capital, and Lerer Ventures are playing a large part in helping fuel the fire.

All in, it's been a great year for New York Tech. So we created the Silicon Alley 100 to celebrate people who did the coolest things in 2012. And this year, the list is ranked.

So what constitutes someone who's done something cool?

We prioritized entrepreneurs over investors, because it's much harder to start a company than to fund one. In particular, we prioritized startups with amazing exits and people who had big, game-changing roles at the tech companies.

Next, we valued companies that really exploded over the last year (the Kickstarters, Etsys and 10gens), followed by entrepreneurs who launched interesting new companies. Then we dove deeper into the ecosystem and recognized the money behind the startups — the angel and early-stage investors, as well as the creators of incubators and accelerators.

Thanks to everyone for all the hard work they've done to make New York the coolest place in the world to launch a tech company.

Actually, Red States Don't Always Get More Federal Funding

New York City Manhattan Skyline Empire State Building Night

State personal income in the past six quarters has grown mostly in “red” states and states run by Republican governors, TheBlaze reported earlier this month.

However, after TheBlaze noted this trend, a few readers argued that the increase could be attributed to the “fact” that “red” states typically receive the lion’s share of federal funding.

Check out the states with the most federal funding >

Do they really?

In a word: no. In fact, since 2000, solid “blue” states have received far more in federal funding than solid “red” states, a Blaze analysis finds.

First, let’s define the state color scheme:

  • Red: Republican presidential candidates have won this state in every election since 1996
  • Pink: Republican presidential candidates have won this state three times since 1996
  • Purple: This state has been won twice by a Republican presidential candidate and twice by a Democrat presidential candidate since 1996
  • Light Blue: Democrat presidential candidates have won this state three times since 1996
  • Blue: Democrat presidential candidates have won this state in every election since 1996

A quick word on our use of 1996: Because most pre-’96 electoral maps involve different color schemes, we felt it would be best to start with President Clinton’s second run for office, the year the “red” state/”blue” state map configuration we’re all familiar with became more or less standardized (although it would take another four years for it to become a widely used election year tool).

Now it should be pointed out that fed funds go to a whole host of things including military, infrastructure, and disaster relief. Moreover, a state’s population plays a large role in the total amount received. But the argument isn’t about which states are “more deserving” of fed aid. The argument is that “red” states receive more fed funds than anyone else.

That being said, here is a breakdown of all 50 states and the District of Columbia by electoral map color and federal funding since 2000, according to USA.gov:

Federal funding by state bar graph

As you can clearly see, there’s a difference in the distribution of federal funds among the states. In fact, if you combined “strong GOP” with “likely GOP,” the amount would still be less than what “strong Dem” states have received in the last 12 years.

Now some argue that certain states spend their federal funds differently, giving more back to the “pie” than others, and that this somehow changes everything.

But, again, that’s not the argument. The original argument claims “red” states receive more federal funds than “blue” states, leading to things such as an uptick in income growth. But as the above clearly indicates, “red” states simply don’t get more in fed funds.

Now we’re sure you’re want to know which states have received the most since the turn of the new millennium. We’re glad you asked. It just so happens that we have a list prepared for you.

Here are the top ten states that have received the most federal funding since 2000, their estimated populations in 2011 (according to the U.S. Census Bureau), the amount of federal spending per capita in 2011 (the population estimate divided by total federal spending in FY2011), and their electoral map color (based on the last four election cycles):
