8 US Cities Where Home Prices Are Expected To Fall

Manhattan, NYC

National home prices are expected to rise 1.7 percent from Q3 2012 - Q3 2013, according to Zillow's latest report.

But not all markets are experiencing a recovery. 191 metropolitan areas saw declines in home prices in the third quarter, up from 125 metros in the second quarter.

“We’re likely seeing home values fall back into the negative range in some markets due to the close of the traditional home-buying season,” said Zillow Chief Economist Stan Humphries in a press release.

“Looking forward, we expect to see home values bump along the bottom for some time, before increasing at a slow and steady pace."

We drew on the report to rank eight cities where home prices are projected to decline the most in the next year. We also included an estimate of when home prices bottomed, and the actual value of a home.

Note: The list is based on projected home price depreciation between Q3 2012 - Q3 2013.

6 Gorgeous Private Island Retreats

$

Conch Key CottagesThis post originally appeared at Oyster.com.

Owning a private island is overrated and it’s actually a lot of work — or so we’ve heard from our many island-owning friends. You have to deal with the astronomical taxes, the development, the upkeep — it’s a full-time job (that island owners simply pay other people to do, of course).

But visiting a private island? It’s as great as everyone says — and we know from experience. We’ve stayed on some gorgeous private islands in our travels, in equally gorgeous hotels and resorts. Here are six of our favorites.

Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado, Dominican Republic

The details: The D.R.’s only luxury resort set on its own island, the Gran Bahia Cayo Levantado offers a relaxing atmosphere for couples and families. There are scenic beaches and beautiful pools, and we love the details in the rooms: Four-poster beds, private Jacuzzi tubs, and island-inspired artwork give them a romantic vibe.

How to get there: From the Samana airport, it’s a 45-minute cab ride to the Bahia ferry station. From there, it’s a 10- to 15-minute ferry ride to Cayo Levantado. In lieu of the ferry, you can also hire a private panga boat to take you from Samana. We never said getting to a private island is easy, but it’s certainly worth the flight (…and drive and boat ride)!

Paradise Point Resort and Spa, San Diego

The details: This 462-room property near Sea World has sprawling grounds, activities – such as tennis, a putting green, water sports, and basketball — galore, five pools, a spa, and bonfire pits for roasting s’mores after dark. But perhaps the highlight of Paradise Point Resort and Spa is that it sits on a tranquil, mile-long beach.

How to get there: In Mission Bay, Paradise Point is connected to the mainland by Ingraham Street so reaching the resort is easy enough, and takes just about a 15-minute car ride from downtown San Diego.

Fowl Cay Resort, Bahamas

The details: Crowded beaches are unheard of at this resort where a maximum of 28 guests at a time have free range of 50 acres and three beaches. Personal boats for daily excursions, on-call service, spacious villas with fully stocked kitchens and wet bars, and a host of all-inclusive activities make Fowl Cay Resort a standout gem in the Exumas.

How to get there: The Exumas Islands (where the resort is located) are accessible by small charter plane via Fort Lauderdale or Nassau. Boat transfers to and from the airstrip are included in resort rates and take less than 10 minutes.

The 16 Pipeline Operators With The Most 'Incidents'

oil spill seal

Opponents of pipeline projects like Transcanada's Keystone often point to the risks of spill and injuries.

The truth is these incidents are very rare.

However, they do occur

We compiled data collected by the Department of Transportation since 2006 showing every "significant incident" in the country.

Click Here To See The Worst Operators >

DOT defines "incidents" as ones that included one of the following:

1) Fatality or injury requiring in-patient hospitalization.

2) $50,000 or more in total costs, measured in 1984 dollars.

3) Highly volatile liquid releases of 5 barrels or more or other liquid releases of 50 barrels or more.

4) Liquid releases resulting in an unintentional fire or explosion.

Not every incident is the result of human error; some are the result of corrosion or natural causes.

Nevertheless, we think these data show the true costs of running pipelines across the country.

We took operator names as they are officially registered with DOT (so as to separate out subsidiaries) and ranked them according to incidents per mile of pipeline, with a cut-off of 45 incidents (again, since 2006).

These Are The World's Best Airport Hotels

DNU

Tim Sargent once spent a week in Dallas, and never left the airport.

Instead, he was checked in at the Grand Hyatt DFW, a plush airport hotel just outside Terminal D. “I’ve been there at least 20 times for meetings,” says the San Diego–based biotech executive.

See The World's Best Airport Hotels >

“Dallas is a huge hub, and it’s central, so it’s convenient for colleagues around the country. Staying at the airport, you don’t have to pay for a lot of cab fares.  And the hotel is actually really cool.”

Airport hotels have come a long way since their first mainstream incarnations, as bare-bones motels meant for bleary-eyed layovers. An increasing number of airport hotels now have spas, rooftop pools and fine dining that goes far beyond the toast-your-own-waffle breakfast spread.

One big reason? Business travelers like Sargent. “Airport hotels are finally stepping up to the level of services and amenities we’ve been seeing in downtown business hotels for quite a while,” says Jan Freitag, senior vice president with hotel research firm STR.

The best airport hotels make it tempting to stay past the business meetings and into the weekend. At the Radisson SAS at Oslo’s Gardermoen, for example, travelers can play virtual golf on one of 32 courses around the world. The Four Points Sheraton outside LAX invites guests to join its Beer Club and have a craft beer left bedside for turndown service. The Regal Airport Hotel in Hong Kong even boasts its own luxe wedding facilities.

Want your next airport stay to be more than a fly-by? Check out our list of the world’s best airport hotels.

Radisson Blu Hotel London-Stansted Airport

The main restaurant at this Vegas-worthy hotel—connected to the main terminal by a covered walkway—features entertainment that evokes Cirque du Soleil. Occupying a 43-foot-high structure that lights up at night and holds 4,000 bottles of wine, Angels Wine Tower Bar has acrobats (or “wine angels”) who fly up and down on wires to get your bottle from on high. Feeling athletically inspired? Hit the hotel’s gym, which offers yoga and spin classes, and even swim lessons for kids. (radissonblu.co.uk; doubles from $106.)

CitizenM Hotel Amsterdam Schiphol

Wandering into the lobby of this mod-style boutique hotel (set just outside the car rental exit of the airport) is a little like browsing in a sleek design shop; the series of living rooms, all outfitted with streamlined modern Vitra furniture, are stocked with Macs for complimentary use (and free Wi-Fi). Guestrooms are equally aesthetically pleasing: You can store your open suitcase in a special drawer underneath your XL bed, enjoy a rain shower in your bath or control your room’s colored ambient lighting with a “mood pad.” (citizenm.com; doubles from $139.)

Sheraton Düsseldorf Airport Hotel

Talk about a penthouse suite. This one-story, oval-shaped hotel is located entirely on top of the airport’s Car Park 3 and is surrounded by a landscaped roof garden with tables and chairs, summer food service and turtle ponds, as well as sweeping city views. There’s a 24-hour fitness center, free computer stations and Wi-Fi, eco-friendly rooms in warm earth tones and a Bavarian tavern with its own beer garden. (starwoodhotels.com; day rates from $106, overnight from $197.)

The 10 Most Troubled Industries In America

$

risk

Kevin Boyland and Anna Son at IBISWorld released a report highlighting ten U.S. industries with limited growth prospects.

Even as the economic recovery continues, these industries aren't likely to be losers.

Click Here To See The Industries >

U.S. GDP growth is projected to be 1.8% per annum from 2012 through 2017, which is higher than forecasted revenue growth for any of the at-risk industries over the same period.

Threats faced by these industries include:

  • High competition from substitutes and low-cost imports;
  • Decreasing demand;
  • Market saturation;
  • Technological stagnation; and
  • Declining life cycles.

Though a majority of these industries will recover in the long term, for some the death knell has surely been rung.

The two analysts developed a risk score for each industry composed of a weighted combination of structural risk, growth risk, and sensitivity risk.

#10 Business Service Centers

Risk Score: 6.07

2012-17 Annualized
Revenue Growth: +0.4%

Description: Digitization reduces the need for mailbox rentals and other services provided by this industry, and its relevance is on a seemingly irreversible decline.

Source: IBISWorld

#9 Shoe and Footwear Manufacturing

Risk Score: 6.14

2012-17 Annualized
Revenue Growth: -1.8%

Description: Vertical integration and low-cost imports have shifted footwear manufacturing overseas. The number of industry participants is expected to decrease nearly 2% annually while imports are projected to meet over 96% of domestic demand in the next five years.

Source: IBISWorld

#8 Homeowners' Associations

Risk Score: 6.17

2012-17 Annualized
Revenue Growth: +2.6%

Description: Homeownership rates, which declined when the housing bubble burst, go hand-in-hand with homeowners' associations. As a result of the recession, fewer homeowners will have the means and desire to pay fees to these organizations.

What Happens To Your Body During A Hangover

$
0
0

Toulouse Th Drinker

It's happened. You've gone out with your clients, or you've had a work party, or it's the weekend, and you drank a bit too much.

The formal name for a hangover is veisalgia. It comes from a Norwegian word that means "uneasiness following debauchery" (kveis) and also the Greek word for "pain" (algia). It occurs when your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) starts to fall after drinking and peaks wen your BAC hits zero.

It's withdrawal people, and it's terrible.

Try any cure you want, but the fact is that for a matter of hours your body is going to go through a painful, debilitating process.

Let's break it down for you.

It makes you urinate a lot (dehydrates you) by blocking the secretion of vassopressin.

Vassopressin, also known as the antidiuretic hormone and created in the petuitary gland, is what makes your kidneys absorb water.

So when you drink, any H2O bypasses your kidneys and goes straight to the bladder.

Source: How Stuff Works

It gives you a headache and makes you nauseous.

When you urinate excessively, your body releases sodium and potassium and this is what you get.

Source: How Stuff Works

It messes with your sleep.

Your body gets excited as your blood alcohol concentration decreases, so you keep waking up abruptly or you sleep lightly.

Fashion blog Stylerblaster has put a motion sensor activated camera on a Bedford Avenue building to snap photos of passersby in the hipster neighborhood. Photos then instantly appear on the blog, where readers can rate each outfit. A top hat symbolizes if a person is "stylin" or not.

Site creator Jules Laplace told Gothamist what's in style:

For hipsters—Croakies are back in style, and this year's Loew's fall fashion line is to die for. And for the rest of us who can't afford Opening Ceremony—put your cellphone away, be poised, and stride confidently. You never know who you're going to meet/tweet!

10 Things We Learned From Watching The 'Iron Man 3' Trailer

$
0
0

pepper potts iron man 3

If you're like us, you've watched the "Iron Man 3" trailer more than once.

The relatively somber picture of a dark Tony Stark left us with a lot of questions.

What's the deal with Guy Pearce's role in the film? Why are there so many Iron Man suits? And, who's the girl making moves on Stark?

If the trailer left you confused as to where the sequel is heading, we've broken it down for you including some answers to the very vague released plot and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it giant stuffed pink bunny and tattoo.

The film will follow the "Extremis" storyline.

There's a six-story comic from 2005-2006 follows the invention of a serum / virus, "Extremis." The serum is supposed to be used solely for military purposes to engineer a Super Soldier.

Parts of the "Extremis" storyline were used in the first film for Stark's origin story (the bomb exploding during his tour in Afghanistan, taking deathly shrapnel to the chest, etc.).

The serum basically reboots the entire human system with better organs, faster reflexes and healing abilities among other heightened senses. Sounds great until you find out it's only compatible with about 2.5 percent of the population.

We're betting the film will most likely follow the fallout of how this serum affects Aldrich Killian (involved with its creation), Tony Stark, the government, and particularly how The Mandarin sees it as beneficial.

There's more than one villain.

Sure, Ben Kingsley is being touted as the main bad guy, Mandarin.

However, how many superhero movies three films deep (Spider-Man, TDKR) do you know to play ball with one main antagonist?

We got a look at Guy Pearce who will be playing the role of Aldrich Killian, the geneticist who serves as one of the bad guys in the "Extremis" story arc.

As well, comic character Eric Slavin (James Badge) will be introduced in the film. In the comics, he goes on to become a RoboCop-esque cyborg villain Coldblood.

Pepper Potts gets kidnapped.

Could she be strapped to some sort of "Extremis" mechanism?

The Capital Hill Residence designed by Zaha Hadid spans 28,500 square feet of "fluid geometries," with the master bedroom atop a 65-foot tower accessed by elevator.

The trophy home is owned by billionaire Vladislav Doronin—aka Moscow's Donald Trump—and his super model fiancée Naomi Campbell.

Campbell also likes unusual homes, buying an Eco-friendly pad in Turkey and a Gothic abode in Venice.

Damage From The Frankenstorm Could Be As Bad As The Super Outbreak Of 1974

tornado storm

In a tweet yesterday, meteorologist Jim Cantore mentioned a "super outbreak of 1974" when talking about Hurricane Sandy's potential to be a disastrous Hurricane.

That got us wondering: What the heck is he talking about?

The "super outbreak" was the worst tornado outbreak in U.S. history, which happened April 3 and 4, 1974.

See the damage from the Super Outbreak of 1974 >

An incredible number of tornadoes hit 13 states: Alabama, Georgie, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the technology of 1974 was not able to quickly and accurately predict tornadoes. The National Weather Service needed visual confirmation of a tornado in order to issue a warning, which resulted in an incredible amount of damage.

Even with current warning systems, as Cantore alluded to in his tweet, disastrous tornado storms still happen. From April 25 through 28 in 2011 the largest tornado outbreak ever recorded tore through the Southern, Midwestern, and Northeastern United States. 358 tornadoes were confirmed by the National Weather Service in 21 states from Texas to New York and in southern Canada causing an insane amount of damage.

During the Super Outbreak 148 tornadoes touched down in 13 states.

The outbreak lasted 16 hours and it's damage path was more than 2,500 miles long.

The tornadoes killed 330 people and injured 5,484.

Crazy, Beautiful, Strange: Get A Look At The Dizzying Array Of Windows 8 Devices Hitting Shelves Now (MSFT)

$

dell xps windows 8

Windows 8 is finally here. Microsoft's newest operating system brings with it a host of devices—some in form factors we've never seen before.

You've got your usual laptops and all-in-one desktop machines. But then there are convertibles, ultrabooks, dual-screen devices, even giant tablets for your coffee table.

This amazing array of shapes, sizes, and configurations is a direct result of Windows 8's key feature: It embraces touch but can still be used with keyboards and mice.

So some Windows 8 devices are best suited for traditional computing use, while others embrace the new mobile paradigm, and others sit somewhere in between.

Microsoft Surface RT & Pro Versions

The Surface marks Microsoft's first foray into PC hardware manufacturing, if you don't count its Xbox videogame consoles.

The Surface RT, the first tablet to be released, features an Nvidia Tegra-based ARM processor, weighs 1.5 pounds, measures 9.3 mm thick, and has a 10.6 inch HD touch screen. External ports include: microSD, USB 2.0, and a Micro HD video port. The RT also features either 32GB or 64GB of storage.

It's important to note that the RT model of the Surface won't run the full version of Windows 8. Instead, it'll run Windows RT, a version of the software designed only for tablets and touchscreen devices. RT won't run older Windows desktop apps, only apps found in Microsoft's app store.

At some point after the launch of the RT—likely in early 2013—Microsoft will launch the Surface Pro. The Surface Pro will run Windows 8, meaning you'll be able to run classic Windows desktop apps. Think of the Surface Pro as a laptop's guts crammed into a tablet, while the Surface RT is a pure tablet.

Price for the Surface RT: Starting at $499

For users who want a bit more power, Dell also offers the XPS Duo with a 1.9 GHz Intel Core i7 processor for $1,699.

Lenovo Twist

Lenovo's Twist is a modified ThinkPad. The ultrabook is a convertible aimed at business users and it weighs in at 3.48 pounds. The twisting mechanism is sturdy and the display is smooth and responsive.

The 12.5-inch screen features a Gorilla Glass-coated display, which takes advantage of IPS technology.

Other features include your choice of an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, either a 128GB SSD or a 7,200 RPM hard drive (320GB or 500GB), 7 hours of battery life, full-sized Ethernet jack, memory-card reader, two USB 3.0 ports, mini-HDMI out and mini-DisplayPort.

For business users, the ultrabook has encryption features and optional 3G wireless.

These Wild Animals Are Taking Over New York City

Walking down New York City's urban streets, the only animals we notice are the people. Sometimes we'll get a glimpse of a rat, mouse or pigeon.

But the urban world around you is also teeming with other wildlife, according to evolutionary biologist Jason Munshi-South, who discussed urban evolution and the wild beasts that live in New York City at this month's Secret Science Club.

See New York's urban wildlife >

In order to monitor what species are living in the area, motion sensor infrared cameras were set up in the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx over a three month period. These cameras captured coyotes, squirrels, raccoons, and more.

While some species are rarer, or even suffered local extinctions, some species are adapting and surviving under these urban pressures. Click through the slides to see the animals that are all around us.

You may notice rats are not mentioned in the slideshow and that's because they are abundant, vicious, and smell bad so Munshi-South avoids them like the plague. He's also done a ton of research into the mice of the city, and how they've adapted to city life genetically.

Squirrels are so abundant, they make up 70 to 80 percent of all the pictures taken by Munshi-South's motion sensor cameras.

Rabbits are common and were also captured often on the motion sensor camera.

Coyotes are becoming increasingly abundant. These coyotes are larger than ones from the West Coast. Researchers believe this is because they mated with wolves in Canada while migrating here.

The Gladiator is loaded with all sorts of gadgets and weaponry, including day and night cameras, a chemical detection system, Light Vehicle Obscuration Smoke System, and is mounted with either M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, the M240G Medium Machine Gun, 9 mm Uzi or an Anti-Personnel/Obstacle Breaching System (APOBS).

The U.S. Army's XM1219 Armed Robotic Vehicle can drive over just about anything, and kill bad guys

If it looks badass, it probably is.

The 7-ton Armed Robotic Vehicle, or ARV, is capable of carrying a ton, that's 2000 lbs, of weaponry. Deployable from a variety of airborne troops carriers, to include the C-130 cargo plane and the CH-46 helicopter.

It incorporates a 'man-in-the-loop' semi autonomous firing system, which boasts the capability for common missiles, hellfire missiles, medium machine gun systems as well as the 30mm Mk 44 chain gun.

It's mobile enough to follow the ground infantry almost anywhere, and it can even carry them in tougher terrain.

This is not one remote control car you're going to find under the Christmas tree.
