Thanksgiving Dinner

  • Thanksgiving meals have changed significantly over the years, though their fowl-and-starch heavy composition has remained the same.
  • The modern Thanksgiving didn't get its start until nearly 200 years after the first Thanksgiving celebrations.
  • Here's how Thanksgiving has evolved over the years, from the dishes themselves to how the holiday has celebrated.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

People have been celebrating Thanksgiving in America in some form or another since the 1600s.

But the holiday has changed constantly over the centuries, along with the dishes people prepare for their Thanksgiving feasts.

Certain foods, like cranberries, have been associated with Thanksgiving for centuries, and may have even been present on the first Thanksgiving table. Others, like chicken pie, haven't exactly stood the test of time.

Read on for 16 examples of how Thanksgiving dinner — and the way we celebrate it — has changed over the centuries.

The earliest Thanksgivings were bigger lasted longer than today's events. Accounts from the early 1600s describe celebrations that lasted multiple days and featured dozens of people.

"They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week.…Many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted," English settler Edward Winslow wrote in one of the few textual records of their first Thanksgiving in 1621.

The first Thanksgiving definitely featured a cooked bird — likely several — but it's unclear whether wild turkey was one of them. Either way, ducks or geese likely also made an appearance on the Thanksgiving table.

Historical records show that the Pilgrims in Plymouth went "fowling" for the meal, and we know that wild turkey were plentiful. But so were many other birds like geese and ducks. Another account from the fall of 1621 indicates that wild turkey were among the Pilgrims' stores.

We do know that the Wampanoag tribe brought five deer to the occasion, so if you were thinking of adding some venison to the Thanksgiving plate, there's historical precedent.

Love them or hate them, cranberries may have been the original Thanksgiving side dish by virtue of the fact they grew natively on American soil.

There probably wasn't cranberry sauce, however. While mixing sugar with cranberries wasn't unheard of, sugar usually was too expensive to import and was not yet grown in North America at the time of the Pilgrims.

That said, the earliest mention of cranberry sauce served with turkey appears in a publication in the book 'American Cookery' in 1796, though the book also suggests 'pickled mangoes' as a just-as-suitable alternative.

Hold the mashed potatoes, though: There weren't any at the first Thanksgivings.

Unlike, for instance, wild corn, potatoes are not native to North America. As a result, they didn't appear on the American plate until around a half century after that first Thanksgiving.

Pumpkin pie made its debut as a Thanksgiving staple in the 19th century and was considered an 'inevitable' part of the holiday meal by 1869, according to a column in the Connecticut Courant at the time.

The 'godmother of Thanksgiving' wrote in 1827 that the definitive Thanksgiving featured not only turkey, but duck, goose, beef, mutton or pork, and chicken pie, which she called an 'indispensable part of a good and true Yankee Thanksgiving.'

That's from magazine editor and cookbook writer Sarah Josepha Hale, who successfully lobbied President Abraham Lincoln to proclaim the last Thursday in November a Thanksgiving Day, though it wasn't made an official federal holiday until 1941.

The 19th century was when the modern Thanksgiving meal began to take shape, thanks to the republishing of pamphlets and historical records from the Pilgrims of the first Thanksgiving celebration and Hale's tireless advocacy.

Hale also frequently published Thanksgiving recipes in her magazine, Godey's Lady's Book. They featured many of our current Thanksgiving staples, including mashed potatoes, which were relatively uncommon at the time.

Sweet potatoes have long been a Thanksgiving staple, but it wasn't until 1917 that it became popular to top them with toasted marshmallows — now an iconic side dish. It was around that time that marshmallows had begun to be mass-produced instead of hand-crafted.

The Angelus Marshmallow Company hired Janet McKenzie Hill of the Boston Cooking School Magazine to help spur sales by creating a recipe book featuring marshmallows as an integral star. Among these was the first recorded recipe for marshmallow-topped sweet potato casserole.

Green bean casserole wasn't invented until 1955. Developed by Dorcas Reilly in the Campbell's test kitchen in Camden, New Jersey in 1955, green bean casserole is now the most common Thanksgiving side dish in the Midwest.

Not bad for a dish that Campbell's had commissioned specifically to improve their sales of cream of mushroom soup.

And it worked, too. The company makes a whopping 40% of its total sales for the year of cream of mushroom soup for the year leading up to Thanksgiving.

Oyster stuffing (or 'dressing,' if you prefer) was initially more popular than other simply bread-and-herb-based stuffings, thanks to the cheapness and abundance of oysters in New England, where the Thanksgiving celebration first found its footing.

People used to even stuff their birds with oysters to stretch the meal.

Today, oyster dressing is uncommon outside of Gulf Coast states, where it's still considered a mainstay. Few New Orleans Thanksgiving tables are without the family oyster dressing as one of the premier sides.

Speaking of stuffing: Stove Top, a dried stuffing mix in a box, debuted in 1972, becoming a staple of many Thanksgiving tables through the decade and beyond. As of 2005, Kraft Foods still sells more than 60 million boxes of it each Thanksgiving.

We have Thanksgiving to thank for the TV dinner. A seasonal over-ordering of 260 tons of turkey by manufacturer Swanson led them to innovate the frozen and reheat-able packaged meals that revolutionized speedy cooking at home.

In 2019, more than a third of hosts plan to spend more time (38%) and money (39%) on Thanksgiving than they did the year before, and 57% plan to serve exclusively homemade dishes. A little less than half are budgeting more than $200 for the meal.

Modern Americans use Thanksgiving sides as a place to experiment with new dishes and techniques, while keeping guests happy with the traditional trappings of the meal like turkey and gravy.

The relatively recent innovation of "Friendsgiving"— a Thanksgiving celebration with friends instead of family — is shaking up old standards and leading to more experimental Thanksgiving cooking.

The word "Friendsgiving" wasn't coined until around 2007, according to Merriam-Webster. The increasingly popular event is sparking a demand for alternative Thanksgiving foods and party ideas.

Drake, Bloomberg, and Middle East peace: These are the 7 craziest details from Vanity Fair's WeWork exposé

Adam Neumann

1. Neumann helped Jared Kushner with his Middle East peace plan

Neumann reportedly helped his friend Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, with his plan to resolve conflict in the Middle East.

"WeWork executives were shocked to discover Neumann was working on Jared Kushner's Mideast peace effort," Vanity Fair reported.

Neumann tasked a WeWork director with hiring an advertising firm to create a video for Kushner showing what an economic renaissance in the West Bank and Gaza could look like, the magazine said.

Kushner presented a version of the video at the White House's peace conference in Bahrain last summer.

2. Neumann hung out with Drake and Ashton Kutcher at WeWork's offices

Neumann enjoyed befriending and working with celebrities.

He waltzed barefoot through WeWork's headquarters with Drake and Ashton Kutcher in tow, according to Vanity Fair. Hugh Jackman was spotted at WeWork's offices, Fast Company reported.

Neumann and his team also considered hiring Martin Scorsese to direct a series of videos promoting the WeWork brand, according to Ad Age.

3. Neumann said he convinced Rahm Emmanuel to run for president on the "WeWork Agenda"

Neumann told a WeWork investor he convinced Rahm Emmanuel, the former mayor of Chicago who also served as Barack Obama's chief of staff, to run for president in 2020 on the "WeWork Agenda," according to Vanity Fair.

The magazine first reported the story in September.

4. WeWork was more chaotic than Trump's White House

The chaos inside WeWork "made the Trump White House look like a well-oiled machine," a former senior executive told Vanity Fair.

The startup had two employees for every desk in its first headquarters, leading the company to distribute staff across New York City, the magazine reported. WeWork also signed lease after lease with minimal oversight from the top. "There was no discipline to how Adam approved leases," a WeWork executive told Vanity Fair.

"No one knew what anyone was doing," a real-estate broker, who worked with the startup during its rapid expansion, told the magazine.

5. Neumann told colleagues the author of "Steve Jobs" might write his biography

Neumann told colleagues that Walter Isaacson — the author of biographies of Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, and Leonardo Da Vinci — might write his biography, according to Vanity Fair.

The WeWork cofounder reminded Isaacson of the Apple cofounder. "Like Steve Jobs, he is very good at seeing the big picture," Isaacson told Fast Company in May.

6. Neumann met with multiple world leaders

Neumann made time to meet with multiple world leaders. He discussed the Syrian refugee crisis with Canada's prime minister, Justin Trudeau, and chatted about urban planning with London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, according to Vanity Fair.

The WeWork cofounder told colleagues he was saving Saudi Arabia's women by working with the country's crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, to offer them coding classes, the magazine reported.

In a meeting with Stephen Hadley, a former national security adviser, Neumann reportedly said he was the right mentor to help bin Salman navigate the fallout from the gruesome death of Jamal Khashoggi. He also saw Kushner, bin Salman, and himself as world saviors, Vanity Fair reported.

7. Neumann wanted WeWork to be like Bloomberg

Neumann enjoyed the freedom and lack of accountability that came with leading a private company, according to Vanity Fair. He wished to operate like Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire founder and boss of the eponymous financial-data group.

"Adam never wanted to go public," a former WeWork executive told the magazine. "His ideal was Bloomberg. He wanted to remain private so he could do whatever the f*** he wanted."

airpods max speaker

A 17-year-old high school student found himself with a viral Reddit hit on his hands when he built a giant Bluetooth speaker in the shape one of the hottest gadgets around: Apple's best-selling AirPods.

The 10-inch-tall AirPod is a fully functional wireless speaker, according to its creator, a Minnesota high school student named Aaron Beckman. Beckman posted a picture of his creation earlier this month on the r/MildlyInteresting Reddit thread, where it's since accrued more than 78,000 upvotes and 2,000 comments.

To make the AirPod speaker — which he's dubbed the "AirPod Max"— Beckman used a 3D printer, available through his high school's robotics team, to replicate and blow up an accurate clone of the AirPods.

Beckman shared these photos of his AirPod Max speaker, and told us a little about how he built it:

SEE ALSO: I brought Snapchat's new $380 smart glasses on a trip to London, and their biggest selling point was a major letdown

Beckman's AirPod design is incredibly faithful to the original.

His AirPod speaker includes even the smallest details of Apple's earbuds, from the small buttons and grooves, to the "L" that marks that it's for your left ear.

Aside from using a 3D printer to construct the AirPods speaker surface model, Beckman used paint to draw on the "L" and black dots, and window screen to create the mesh look of the speaker inside the AirPod.

Beckman also assembled the electronics to make his giant AirPod a functional speaker. Next, he plans to build a matching right-ear AirPod Max, so he can get stereo sound.

Like any functional Bluetooth speaker, Beckman built in a charging port that allows him to re-power the battery after use. Beckman told Business Insider that from design to completion, his AirPod speaker took around 22 hours to complete.

NFL WEEK 12: Our official predictions for who wins this weekend

Oakland Raiders

  • Week 11 of the NFL season was a middling one for our best bets, with our picks going a solid 6-8 against the spread.
  • This week, the Colts and Texans kick things off in Houston on Thursday night, followed up by a full slate of games on Sunday.
  • Once again, we're picking every game of the week against the spread with the hopes of making a little money.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

We had a middling week of gambling in Week 11 of the NFL season, going 6-8 against the spread to sustain through a tough week and keep us well in the black so far this season.

This week, we're back at it, picking every game with hopes of making a little cash.

Take a look below at our best bets for Week 12 of the NFL season (* indicates home team).

LAST WEEK: 6-8
OVERALL: 85-75-2

Houston Texans* (-3.5) over Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are dealing with a lot of injuries right now, with receiving threats T.Y. Hilton and Eric Ebron both questionable to play on the short week, and top running back Marlon Mack out for the foreseeable future.

After a demoralizing loss to the Ravens on Sunday, I like the Texans to bounce back at home with a big win over their division rival.

Atlanta Falcons* (-4.5) over Tampa Bay Buccaneers

After a miserable, if bewildering, start to the season, the Atlanta Falcons have now won two straight games dominantly against divisional opponents.

On Sunday, they'll get their chance at a third, and I expect the offense to shine once again as Atlanta attempts to score their first home win since mid-September.

New York Giants (+6) over Chicago Bears*

Mitch Trubisky is an absolute disaster for the Chicago Bears right now, and even against a Giants defense that has been kind to opposing quarterbacks, it's tough to trust him as a touchdown favorite in this spot.

Unless you see the Bears defense scoring twice in this one, take the points and move on.

Cleveland Browns* (-10.5) over Miami Dolphins

Cleveland needs a big win at home, and thankfully, the Dolphins are arriving right on time.

Browns fans, fantasy owners, and commentators alike have all been waiting and waiting for a dominant performance from the Cleveland offense, and this feels like the week it finally comes.

Philadelphia Eagles* (-1.5) over Seattle Seahawks

Nothing about this line makes any sense. The Seahawks are possibly the best team in the NFC, with their only two losses on the year coming against the Saints and Ravens. The Eagles are 5-5 and sport a roster full of receivers that refuse to catch the ball.

Sometimes Las Vegas makes mistakes, but it feels like the bookmakers know something in this spot. I don't know what it is, but when a line looks this easy, it's usually best to go the other way.

Carolina Panthers (+9.5) over New Orleans Saints*

The Panthers are undervalued after the shellacking they took at the hands of the Falcons at home last week. The Saints are slightly overvalued after a reassuring performance against the Buccaneers.

New Orleans is the better team here, but this is too many points to give in a divisional game.

Oakland Raiders (-3) over New York Jets*

This looks like a textbook trap game for the Raiders, who have rattled off three straight wins and could have a division-deciding bout with the Chiefs next week if they can take care of business in New York. When the potential story for next week is laid out that clearly, it's usually best to fade it — football has a way of messing with your narratives.

That said, the Jets have won two straight games, making them less of a sneaky underdog here and more of a legitimate threat the Raiders won't take lightly. If you had told me at the start of the year I could bet against the Jets winning three straight games, I would have taken it in a heartbeat.

Denver Broncos (+4) over Buffalo Bills*

Despite their lousy record, the Broncos have played solid football for the past two months, and have proven their ability to keep things close, four of their losses coming by four points or less this year.

Wins over bad teams inflate Buffalo's record, and their reckoning is coming in the home stretch of the season.

Washington Redskins* (+3.5) over Detroit Lions

Washington is the most broken team in the NFL right now, but I refuse to bet Jeff Driskel as a road favorite.

That said, the best advice I can give you here is to take your money elsewhere.

Cincinnati Bengals* (+6.5) over Pittsburgh Steelers

The Bengals are going to win a game eventually, and this week, facing a divisional opponent at home coming off a chaotic loss that ended in a brawl, feels like as good a spot as any to back them.

Jacksonville Jaguars (+3) over Tennessee Titans*

Nick Foles first game back for the Jacksonville Jaguars didn't go as planned, but in a division with as much infighting as the AFC South, it feels like they steal a win here over the Titans.

Dallas Cowboys (+6.5) over New England Patriots*

The Patriots offense looked rather lifeless against the Philadelphia Eagles last week, and with Dak Prescott playing like one of the hottest quarterbacks in the NFL in recent weeks, I have faith that Dallas can keep this game competitive.

Green Bay Packers (+3) over San Francisco 49ers

The Packers got trounced during their last trip to California this year after leaving a day early for their Week 9 matchup against the Chargers. This week, the team is traveling on Saturday, leaving no time for nonsense and hopefully setting the Packers up for a big win against one of the top contenders in the NFC.

Los Angeles Rams* (+3) over Baltimore Ravens

Every casual bettor on the planet is going to be on the Ravens in this game. When the world zigs, we zag, so we're blindly backing the Rams and hoping the Los Angeles defense can figure out some way to slow down Lamar Jackson.

There is an ironic failure to the NFL's new pass interference review rules

The NFL's botched workout for Colin Kaepernick was unlike anything the league had ever put together, and blame for the debacle is flying in all directions

The 15th edition of JD Power's North America Airline Satisfaction Study found consumer satisfaction to be at an all-time high.

Over the past year, airlines in the US and Canada scored an average of 773 points on a 1,000-point scale, beating last year's record-setting score by 11 points.

According to JD Power, the increase in customer satisfaction has been driven by airlines' investments in reservation and check-in technology along with an infusion of new aircraft.

"Airlines continue to deliver on the operational side of air travel," Michael Taylor, the travel intelligence lead at JD Power, said in a statement. "New technology investments have dramatically improved the reservation and check-in process. Fleets are newer and travelers generally feel that they are getting great value for their money."

Seatback entertainment, food service, and WiFi remain the lowest-ranked parts of the flying experience.

"The one area where both traditional and low-cost carriers can still improve, however, is in in-flight services," Taylor said. "It continues to be the lowest-ranked factor in the study, as many airlines still struggle with in-flight entertainment, connectivity, in-seat power, and food service."

For the third consecutive year, Southwest was the highest scoring airline in the study and among low-cost airlines. This year, it tied with its fellow low-cost carrier JetBlue with 817 points.

With 801 points, Alaska Airlines once again earned the highest score for a traditional airline. It has now earned that distinction in 12 straight years.

Airlines in the study are judged on performance in seven categories. In order of importance, they are cost and fees; in-flight services; aircraft; boarding, deplaning, and baggage; flight crew; check-in; and reservations.

The JD Power study is based on data gathered from 5,966 business and leisure passengers who flew on major US and Canadian airlines from April 2018 through March 2019. Several notable airlines such as Hawaiian, Allegiant, and Air Transat were not included in the study.

Here is a closer look at how the US airlines performed on the JD Power 2019 North America Airlines Satisfaction Study.

  • On television sets, costumes and props are usually owned by the studio that is producing the show.
  • Actors often are gifted items from the set to recognize their time on the show and these items range from minor props to entire wardrobes.
  • Other times, actors take items from the set that are unlikely to ever be used again and keep them as a memento.
  • Actors such as Sophie Turner, Sandra Oh, Neil Patrick Harris, and Jenna Fischer have all talked about having mementos from their respective shows at home.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Whether it was given as a gift or taken without explicit permission, props and set pieces have been going home with actors for years.

Although they're not always allowed to take props and costumes (these are usually owned by the studios behind the TV show), actors oftentimes bring a special item home with them to commemorate their hard work and signify the memories they made on the show.

Here are some of the many things actors have taken from TV sets.

"On 'Downton,' not only is each letter beautifully handwritten or typed if appropriate, but it's also germane to the scene that you're doing," he explained. "It's really beautiful, that level of detail, because it puts you in the moment, in that era that you are trying to evoke."

"On the last day, Chord Overstreet and I were walking out and we took some of the trophies out of the case. I have McKinley High 2002 speech-and-debate trophy as a bookend in my house," Criss told the publication.

He said he and Overstreet also took some materials they could use to soundproof their respective home studios. Criss also said he took the green couch from the principal's office.

And, of course, he made sure to take home his character's staple Dalton Warblers jacket adding, "No one was taking that but me."

When "Glee" ended in 2015, star Lea Michele shared a number of photos in honor of its final day of shooting.

One, in particular, revealed which prop from the set would be going home with her — the jersey her late boyfriend and former co-star Cory Monteith (who played Finn) frequently wore on the show before he died.

Michele captioned the photo of her leaving set with the framed jersey with, "One last thing."

Nick Offerman said he took home a poster from Ron Swanson’s office.

Breakfast food played a major role on "Parks and Recreation," so it's only natural that Nick Offerman (who played Ron Swanson on the show) took home a poster featuring the morning fare.

In 2015, when asked by USA Today what memorabilia he took home from the set, Offerman said he took one of three posters that hung in Ron's office: the one ofa woman holding a plate of breakfast food.

Offerman explained, "That one I always thought was so funny and was very representative, to me, of the subtle sense of humor of the show: playing up how funny mundane, Midwestern objects can be."

I bought the highest-rated pair of jeans on Amazon under $25 and will never buy jeans in-store again

Jean shopping isn't easy. I've tried countless fits, washes, and styles over the years, and have yet to find my perfect pair, though I did come close with a $245 pair from a clothing rental service.

I usually like to try clothes on in the store to ensure they fit before buying them, especially when it comes to jeans. However, this week, I decided to try something a little different.

I shop on Amazon for most things, from laundry detergent to socks and cookware. However, I rarely buy clothes through the global online retailer.

I decided to put Amazon's reviews sections and incredible prices to the test and order the highest-rated pair of jeans on Amazon under $25, not including taxes and fees.

Here's what happened when I tried a pair of Amazon-approved jeans.

SEE ALSO: I tried Trader Joe's new Chocolate Lava Gnocchi and was disappointed to find potato and chocolate don't belong together

First, I adjusted my search filters to find the best pair under $25.

I made sure every pair I was viewing had received an average rating of more than four stars and was priced under $25. I also only considered jeans that could be delivered with Prime shipping.

Right away, I noticed a couple of pairs that were more out-of-the-box than I was going for. For this experiment, I was looking for a pair of classic jeans that would never go out of style and maybe, just maybe, last for years.

It was then that I decided on a pair of Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. Gold Label skinny jeans.

Marked as an "Amazon's Choice" item, the jeans were $24.99 with Prime shipping. I ordered them in a size 6 regular, my usual size, in a medium to dark wash.

I figured these jeans would be a safe bet and they looked like they would be decent quality. Knowing the Levi brand, I had high hopes for the jeans.

The jeans had an average 4.5-star rating from 3,829 reviews, which was extremely positive compared to other jeans I saw on the site.

One reviewer said she loved them so much, she wanted a second pair, while others showed off their jeans in photo reviews.

When my jeans arrived, I was excited to see how they would compare to other skinny jeans I've purchased in the past.

When I removed them from the Amazon package, I immediately liked what I saw. They seemed high quality.

They were well-packaged and didn't look like they had ever been tried on.

This was definitely a plus, as I've tried jeans on in-store before and felt like they weren't as fresh as they could have been after being tried on multiple times.

The stitching looked well-done, and the actual material of the jeans was thick.

The pockets also appeared well-constructed.

Examining them more, I really liked the slightly-faded wash and the fabric.

These felt like really good quality jeans — even more so than pricier jeans I currently own.

Slipping them on, they had the perfect amount of stretch.

Honestly, these jeans fit me better than any other jeans I've ever owned — including my $75 Roadtripper jeans from Madewell.

They were tight but didn't dig in anywhere. When it comes to skinny jeans, it can be hard to escape that "10-pound sausage in a 5-pound bag" feeling, but I felt confident in these.

Sometimes when buying cheap jeans, you end up with something similar to a legging. However, these were clearly well-made.

They came with four pockets, a button, and a zip. They were comfortable, very flattering, and true to size. I also think that people one size higher or lower could most likely fit into them, due to the stretch of the fabric.

My colleagues, upon hearing I was reviewing jeans from Amazon, asked if they could feel how thick they were — and they were impressed.

Everyone was pleasantly surprised at the quality — and wanted to order a pair for themselves.

Not only was I impressed with my purchase, but I would buy more pairs of the Levi Strauss & Co. Gold Label skinny jeans in other colors. My only note is that while the jeans were marketed as "mid-rise," I felt they were more high-waisted since they went up past my belly button.

I would rate these jeans 5 stars, especially considering they were under $25.

Paired with blazers or a going-out top, I know I'm going to get a ton of wear out of them.

Next time you're in the market for a pair of jeans, maybe consider checking out Amazon's clothing selection. You might just find your new go-to pair.

A Michelin-starred chef told us why people shouldn't feel intimidated by fine dining

Untitled 2019 11 15T111135.061

If you want an inside look at fine dining, look no further than Benno, the restaurant tucked away in the back of the Evelyn Hotel in Manhattan — the star-studded team is a veritable encyclopedia of restaurant knowledge.

Jonathan Benno is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and has worked in kitchens run by top-name chefs including Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, and Tom Colicchio. He also served as chef de cuisine at Per Se, which was awarded three Michelin stars under his watch, and executive chef at Lincoln Ristorante, which was awarded one star.

Aaron Von Rock, the wine director, and Andrea Verardo, the general manager, also have illustrious, Michelin-starred careers at a slew of fine-dining establishments around the world.

Insider sat down with the trio before service in the elegant dining room of Benno's eponymous restaurant to talk misconceptions surrounding fine dining, the philosophy at Benno, and all things Michelin.

Chef Jonathan Benno told Insider that while all of the Michelin stars he has received over the course of his career are special, the star that his eponymous restaurant, Benno, was awarded in the 2020 guide was a particularly memorable accomplishment.

But while the Michelin-starred restaurant — which is tucked in the back of the first floor of the Evelyn Hotel in Manhattan — is named after him, Benno said he couldn't have done it without his team.

"We have an incredible team here, I have partners here, and I'm certainly not going to say that I did it on my own," he explained.

Benno said that overall, he's pleased with the way his menu has evolved over the last year, noting that the shift from a prix fixe menu to a la carte was done in the name of accessibility.

"A big part of our evolution is that we opened with a prix fixe format," he explained. "It was three-course, four-course, five-course, but the guest chooses the menu. Based on guest feedback, based on the perception of being a tasting menu restaurant, a special occasion restaurant, we made the decision several months ago to go with an a la carte format in the dining room."

Of the many dishes on his menu, Benno said he wished more customers would give tripe, or stomach lining, a shot.

"I wish people would give tripe a chance," he said, chuckling. "Tripe kind of comes on and off our menu. It never really seems to sell very well, and I accept it."

Benno told Insider that a common misconception about fine dining among young people is that service can be prim and proper — and not fun.

He explained that people who eat at fine-dining establishments more often — usually older customers who have the resources to do so — realize that eating at restaurants like Benno can be a blast.

Of the Michelin star, Benno is grateful but knows he and his team can't rest on their laurels.

"We just got the Michelin star, which has really helped with awareness and bringing people through the front door," he explained. "Then it's up to us to deliver an experience that isn't just going to say 'Wow,' it's also going to stick in someone's memory so they come back with their significant other, a business colleague, a private event."

In his review of the restaurant earlier this year, Pete Wells of The New York Times said, "Benno is not trying to be contemporary. It's trying to be delicious. And it is, from start to finish, almost without exception."

When asked about this characterization, Benno told Insider that while the menu at his restaurant is unique and interpretive, it's ultimately rooted in tradition.

"Yes, it's interpretive. Yes, we try to make it our own. But we also try to stay true to the vision of classic French and Italian cuisine," he said. "A significant part of our business and menu at Benno is pasta. Some of them are unique, but we really try to stay true to the vision of being classic French and Italian cuisine."

Though chef Benno is one of the most accomplished chefs in America, his preferred after-shift meal and cocktail are surprisingly relatable.

"As I've gotten older, I've had to watch what I eat and drink at midnight, but I'm a shot and a beer guy," the chef said, chuckling. "It's a Miller High Life and a Maker's Mark on the rocks."

His favorite off-shift meals are also familiar and easygoing.

"It used to be the bistro burger at Corner Bistro or the falafel at Mamoun's," he told Insider. "Those were two classic late-night spots. Now, we eat much earlier. A bowl of ramen at Ivan Ramen — much earlier in the day on my day off — is probably a more consistent experience than Mamoun's or Corner Bistro at two o'clock in the morning."

Wine director Aaron Von Rock told Insider that he and his sommelier, Nick Walton, taste around 13,000 wines each year, and that the first thing he thinks about when making a wine recommendation is the season.

At Benno, the Mediterranean-forward wine list — which is comprised of bottles from areas including Italy, Spain, Southern France, Greece, and Lebanon — comes in at around 450 bottles.

During the fall, he said, when truffles are available, he likes to lean into Nebbiolos, Benno's Brunello library, mature Burgundies, and older California Cabernets.

What might surprise some New Yorkers, though, is how local ingredients factor into Von Rock's beverage program, and how much of a wine director's day is spent searching for new and exciting cocktail ingredients.

"Right around us there are 25 different wine importers and distributors, so we get to visit with them frequently, and we go to the farmer's market to get ingredient ideas," he explained.

"Cocktail Kingdom is a few blocks away and that's a place to get equipment and new ideas for glassware. All of this is about walking around and shopping — that's a lot of my day-to-day, too. I'm shopping with a lot of our guests in mind, particular people, and groups as well."

Von Rock said that if you're feeling intimidated by a large wine list, especially if it's in book form, take a peek at the beginning of the list to see what the restaurant does well.

"Look at the beginning of the list and you can get a good idea of the intention of the restaurant," he explained. "Right away you'll get a snapshot of what they do well. That's the best way to get comfortable with the wine list in general."

He also noted that accessibility is a large part of his wine program.

"We wanted to have a lot of wines in a price range that people could feel like they could participate with," Von Rock told Insider. "Then you're making sure that the quality of those is at the very highest level. That's why we taste so much."

Lately, when he's not tasting wines for work, Von Rock has been drinking Austrian wines.

"I look out for some Grüner Veltliner," he said. "I just enjoy the way that seasons food."

He also told Insider to keep an eye out for new and exciting American wines coming from a state that's not known for its winemaking excellence — Idaho.

"Watch what happens in Idaho," he said. "I think it gets overlooked. A lot of the winemaking talent in Washington state knows they can find cooler climate over that border, so we're getting a lot of fun things out of Idaho."

General manager Andrea Verardo, an alum of fine-dining restaurants all over the world, said that the Michelin star at Benno was a huge accomplishment — especially in New York.

"The Michelin guide is very important for us because it really sets a standard for your guests when they eat here. It kind of recognizes what we have done in the past, what we've learned, and how we've used that to achieve."

Verardo said a big part of that has to do with the high level of service at Benno — one that puts its customer's needs, no matter how knowledgeable they are, first.

"Speaking down to people is not a good way to do it," he said. "We're here, and we might have more knowledge than the diners have, so it's our duty to share that knowledge with the guests."

Verardo explained how accessibility is a huge part of the service at Benno, and how it's the people behind the service that make the experience worthwhile.

"I don't want to compare ourselves to other restaurants," he said. "But if you go to Eleven Madison Park, Per Se, Le Bernardin — all places with beautiful dining rooms, beautiful china, glassware, extremely well-executed food — people come back to these places because of the people that are behind the excellent service. When you go to these places, you go because of the servers, the general managers, the beverage director. That's the most important part of service."

Verardo also explained that terms such as "fine dining" and "upscale" are hard to define. He said that oftentimes, fine dining is just used to describe places that have tablecloths.

"We don't want to have tablecloths because we want to be approachable. If I walked into a restaurant with a white tablecloth, I might say OK, that's an upscale restaurant. And 'upscale,' again, can be misleading. What is upscale? Is that just expensive? Is that a great restaurant or is it just pretentious?"

Verardo also explained that Benno aims to dispel the myth that fine-dining restaurants are only for the prim and proper.

"People should feel really comfortable when they come here," he said. "That starts when we answer the phone, when we greet them, and when we pull the chair for them."

  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories

2019 was full of inventive horror films, poignant family dramas, and a seemingly endless parade of superhero battles.

Many of these big-name flicks received a lot of buzz, but some had far more positive reviews than others.

Here are 30 of the most talked-about movies of the year, ranked by their critical scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

Note: All scores were current on the date of publication and are subject to change.

"Dark Phoenix" was called a low point for the "X-Men" series.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 23%

Summary: After a mission in space goes disastrously wrong, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) absorbs powerful cosmic energy that she struggles to control. As she starts to pose a threat to others, Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and the other X-Men band together to save Jean before it's too late.

Critics largely agreed that the final installment in the X-Men franchise ended the series on a low note.

"'Dark Phoenix' is the final nail in the X-Men franchise's coffin, and it's now up to Marvel Studios to resurrect it," wrote Josh Wilding in his review for Comic Book Movie. "It has its good points and you'll find moments to enjoy, but this is ultimately too average to matter."

Critics were disappointed by the supernatural sequel "Glass."

Rotten Tomatoes score: 37%

Summary: A sequel to "Unbreakable" (2000) and "Split" (2016), "Glass" centers around three supernaturally gifted men: David Dunn (Bruce Willis), Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), and Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) as they confront each other within the confines of a mental asylum.

Critics felt that M. Night Shyamalan's sequel missed the mark with "Glass," despite the talented cast at his disposal.

"You have to admire Shyamalan's efforts to deconstruct a genre that he evidently loves, yet there is just so little to haunt or to fool us in the result, and a few sharp laughs might have helped his cause," wrote Anthony Lane for The New Yorker

Critics questioned the necessity of Disney's remake of "Dumbo."

Rotten Tomatoes score: 47%

Summary: Based on the original 1941 animated film, Tim Burton's "Dumbo" follows circus workers Max Medici (Danny DeVito) and Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) as they turn a unique baby elephant with oversized ears into a crowd-pleasing circus performer.

Although some reviewers found sincerity in the film, the majority of critics expressed disappointment in "Dumbo," with many questioning why it needed to be remade.

"The refurbished story, both numbing in its predictability and painstakingly woke, is the clearest indicator that this reboot need not exist," wrote Leah Pickett for the Chicago Reader.

"The Lion King" remake earned mixed praise from critics.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 53%

Summary: "The Lion King" was another live-action remake from Disney studios, centering around young lion cub Simba (Donald Glover) as he comes of age in the savannas of Africa. Turned away by his uncle after a startling loss, Simba finds a new family with his pals Timon (Billy Eichner) and Pumba (Seth Rogen).

Many critics felt that the charm of the original "Lion King" (1994) was lost in translation among the photorealistic CGI renderings, but most said that it was a good-natured movie all the same.

"'The Lion King' captures just enough of the original's warmhearted excitement — and introduces enough new delights — to feel like more than a cynical Disney money grab," wrote Hannah Giorgis in her review for The Atlantic

Critics called "Aladdin" a serviceable re-imagining of the original film.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 57%

Summary: A re-imagining of "Aladdin" (1992), the live-action film follows the adventures of good-hearted thief Aladdin (Mena Massoud). After he comes upon a magic lamp that awakens a magical genie (Will Smith) he attempts to use his three wishes to win the heart of Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott).

"Aladdin" earned mixed reception from critics, with some finding fault in the movie's direction and others lending praise to its inherent charm.

"'Aladdin' delivers the goods, especially when the music is playing, and while it may not be exactly what you wished for, it's close enough," wrote Mathew DeKinder for the Suburban Journals of St. Louis

Reviewers said "Alita: Battle Angel" was a fun, if lengthy, action film.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 60%

Summary: In the action-adventure film "Alita: Battle Angel," an abandoned cyborg (Rosa Salazar) attempts to make a new life in Iron City with the help of a caring doctor (Christoph Waltz). As the city turns against her, Alita realizes that dangers from her past have come back to haunt her.

Critics generally enjoyed "Alita: Battle Angel," saying it was a bit too long, but the action was unapologetically fun.

"'Alita: Battle Angel' is an action-packed ride that had me in tears," wrote John Nguyen for Nerd Reactor. "It's definitely one of my favorite live-action films based on the manga and anime, and Rosa Salazar as Alita brings a lot of heart to the film."

"It: Chapter Two" received a slew of positive and negative reviews.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 63%

Summary: In the stirring follow-up to "It" (2017), the sequel reconnects with the kids of the "Loser Club" decades later as they find themselves called back to the town of Derry, Maine. They soon realize that they'll never escape their past until Pennywise the clown is defeated once and for all.

Although critics were split on their opinion of "It Chapter Two," many felt that it served as an apt companion piece to the first film.

"If perhaps it isn't nearly as daring as King's novel, capturing the tone and emotional essence goes a long way towards making this study on fear and trembling effectively entertaining," wrote Nicholas Bell for Ion Cinema

Critics called "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" fast, silly, and fun.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 67%

Summary: After facing off against each other in "Furious 7" (2015), Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) partners up with Shaw (Jason Statham) to take on genetically enhanced Brixton (Idris Elba). Hobbs and Shaw race against time to stop Brixton from getting his hands on a bio-threat that could destroy the world.

Critics called out how silly "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" was, but many found the film to be entertaining.

"It's a thoroughly fun action comedy that delivers exactly what it promises - and if the screening I attended is any indication, kids will love it,"Matthew Rozsa wrote for Salon.

Critics found "Pokémon Detective Pikachu" endearing and cute.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 68%

Summary: After he is told that his father has gone missing and is presumed dead, Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) partners up with his dad's Pokemon (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) to find the truth. As they piece together clues about his father's disappearance, Tim and Pikachu stumble upon a larger mystery bigger than they could have ever predicted.

Although the film had some stumbles and missteps, most critics described the film as light and fun family entertainment.

"Smart, imaginative and sweet, 'Detective Pikachu' offers something for everyone," wrote Katie Smith-Wong for Flick Feast.

"Joker" was called a dark and gritty character study.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 69%

Summary: Batman's infamous villain has his origin story unraveled in the dramatic thriller "Joker." Clown-for-hire Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) aspires to be a stand-up comic but the insidious world around him, coupled with his debilitating mental health, leads him down a dark path.

Reviews for "Joker" were largely positive, and though some critics painted it as bleak and dull, many said that Phoenix shined in the role.

"If there is a meaningful difference between performing and acting, Joaquin Phoenix surely exemplifies the former here, creepily contorting as the Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips' timely, toxic take on the Making of a Murdering Madman,"wrote Matthew Lickona for San Diego Reader.

Critics described "Isn't It Romantic" as likable and charming.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 70%

Summary: Natalie (Rebel Wilson) has always thought romance movies were ridiculous but when she hits her head and wakes up in an alternate world, she realizes she might be in one.

Starring in her own romantic comedy, Natalie navigates her place in a shinier New York City and a cut-throat workplace, all while trying to win over heart-throb Blake (Liam Hemsworth).

Critics said that "Isn't It Romantic" played into the very tropes it tried to parody, but most came out of the theater charmed by the comedy.

"So many charming, carefully-crafted laughs that make it worth an hour and 28 minutes of your time," wrote Hannah Chambers for Cosmopolitan. "It's like the writers forced a robot to watch years worth of rom-coms, and then scientifically created this perfect spin with all of their idiosyncrasies."

Critics said "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" was surprisingly imaginative.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 78%

Summary: Based on the gruesome children's series, "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" takes place in 1968 as a group of young teens break into a haunted mansion and mistakenly unleash a dark force upon their town of Mill Valley. As their friends start to disappear, Stella (Zoe Margaret Colletti) tries to quell a dark spirit before it takes her as well.

Even though some reviews pointed to a weak screenplay, most critics were taken aback by the film's strong production value and inventive imagery.

"Impressively gruesome and thematically rich, drawing on political allegory that goes far beyond the simple spooks and scares of the stories themselves,"Katie Walsh wrote for Nerdist

"Captain Marvel" was rescued by a strong central performance.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 78%

Summary: "Captain Marvel" traces the origin story of superhero Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as she returns to earth in search of her past. Teaming up with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Carol works to discover who she really is all while they face off against a planetary threat.

Although superhero films are hardly few and far between these days, critics enjoyed the film and pointed to the unique charisma of Larson's performance as a highlight.

"Superhero cinema has lectured us, ad infinitum, on the responsibility that is conferred by extraordinary gifts,"Anthony Lane wrote for The New Yorker. "Praise be to Larson, for reminding us that they can be bringers of fun."

"Good Boys" was praised for its good-natured humor.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 79%

Summary: Desperate to learn more about girls before they transition into middle school, Max (Jacob Tremblay) and his friends spy on their female neighbors. When the girls destroy his father's drone to teach them a lesson, Max and his pals go on a ludicrous adventure that involves skipping school, dodging the cops, and getting a jumpstart on puberty.

Despite the movie's raunchy nature, critics doled out positive reviews for "Good Boys," calling it a surprisingly wholesome coming-of-age tale.

"The movie's charm comes from its ability to conjure up the innocence of the twilight of childhood; its humor arises from the adult perspective of certain not-so-innocent things," wrote James Berardinelli for Reel Views. "'Good Boys' may not be for everyone but my funny bone was tickled."

Critics loved "Long Shot" because of the chemistry between its leads.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 81%

Summary: In the romantic comedy "Long Shot," Fred Flarksy (Seth Rogen) reconnects with his childhood crush Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron), who now works as a diplomat. Charmed by his self-deprecating humor, Charlotte invites him along as a speechwriter as she campaigns for president.

Critics felt that "Long Shot" did little to break new ground in the romantic-comedy genre, but they applauded the chemistry between Rogen and Theron.

Rhys Tarling wrote for Isolated Nation: "Even when the story is treading well-worn territory, Rogen and Theron are so authentic and lively together that you don't care [if] you know exactly where it's going, you're just happy to be along for the ride."

"Midsommar" was hailed as an inventive, thrilling horror movie.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 83%

Summary: Following a horrific family tragedy, Dani (Florence Pugh) travels to Sweden with her long-term boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor) to attend a summer festival that only happens once every seven decades. As people begin to disappear and things go amiss, Dani suspects that the small Swedish village harbors a dark secret.

Critics praised "Midsommar" as a successful follow-up to writer-director Ari Aster's debut film "Hereditary" (2018).

"Even more than 'Hereditary,' 'Midsommar' lives on the edge where horror meets absurdity, prompting the kind of laughter that comes from not knowing how else to respond," wrote Jake Wilson for The Age

Critics called "Downton Abbey" a pleasant follow-up to a cherished series.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 84%

Summary: An extension of the much-beloved television series, "Downton Abbey" picks up where the show left off, with the high-class Crawley family anticipating the arrival of the king and queen. As the Crawley residence learns that the royal rulers travel with their own staff and servants, tension arises in the noble Abbey.

Critics generally favored "Downton Abbey" as an enjoyable addendum to the established television series.

"With a two-hour running time, 'Downton Abbey' can indulge itself in some of the more delicious aspects of its six-season run," wrote John Anderson in his review for the Wall Street Journal

"The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" was called a fun romp for the whole family.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 85%

Summary: In the "Lego Movie" animated sequel, Emmet (Chris Pratt), Lucy (Elizabeth Banks) and their Lego friends band together to defend Bricksburg from an ominous threat that could wipe out their entire world.

Critics called "The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" an exhilarating ride that was sure to please kids and adults in equal measure.

"Suffice to say that it's a hell of a ride, with poignant things to say about the earnestness of adolescence and the frustrations of sibling conflict," wrote Ed Potton for The Times UK

Critics said "Rocketman" was a well-crafted dive into Elton John's early years.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 89%

Summary: The musical drama "Rocketman" seeks to tell the story of Elton John's (Taron Egerton's) early life, from bright-eyed child to disillusioned rock god. As he rises to the top of the charts, Elton relies on his friend and songwriter Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell) to keep him on the right path.

"Rocketman" was received as a colorful and inventive biopic, as well as a delightful homage to Elton John's discography.

"The movie not only does a fine job in finding the emotionally and narratively meaningful moments for the songs, but also reminds you what power lies in the magical combination of music and lyrics itself," wrote Zhuo-Ning Su for Awards Daily

"Shazam!" earned praise as a fresh and exciting take on superheroes.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 90%

Summary: After meeting an ancient wizard, down-on-his-luck foster kid Billy Baston (Asher Angel) is given the power to become a super-strong, towering superhero (Zachary Levi) named Shazam. But Billy soon realizes that his powers come with a newfound responsibility to protect his city from danger.

In an age of superhero origin stories, a lot of critics praised "Shazam!" for delivering a fresh take on a well-worn premise.

Matthew Norman wrote for the London Evening Standard: "After lazy reliance on phoney gravitas and blundering with its first serious stab at levity with 'Aquaman,' DC has found a comic torch-bearer of pure heart to illuminate the path of righteousness ahead."

"John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" was full of fantastic action sequences.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 90%

Summary: In the third installment of the "John Wick" franchise, John (Keanu Reeves) remains excommunicated from the illustrious guild of assassins he held dominion over.

With a $14 million bounty on his head, John lives a life on the run and leaves a bloody body count in his wake.

Some critics said that although the sequel didn't live up the potential of the first film, "Parabellum" was unparalleled in its action choreography and stunning cinematography.

"It's really impossible to keep track of all the rules, but you don't really care... because the action scenes are so elaborate, so well-choreographed, and so much fun," wrote film critic Wade Major in his review for Film Week

Critics called "Spider-Man: Far From Home" a worthy entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 90%

Summary: In the wake of the universe-altering events of "Avengers: Endgame" (2019), Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and his friends try to regain normalcy in their lives by attending a school trip to Europe. But Peter soon learns that his responsibilities as Spider-Man can never really take a vacation.

Critics said that "Spider-Man: Far From Home" had a few flaws but as a whole it was a satisfying addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"[T]his one is a genuine winner and never wears out its welcome, even if we've all seen far too many superhero movies this past decade,"Jeff York wrote for Creative Screenwriting

Critics said "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" ended on a high note.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 91%

Summary: Taking place a few years after "How to Train Your Dragon" and its sequel, "The Hidden World" picks up with Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Astrid (America Ferrera) ruling the small village of Berk and its citizens as they live peacefully beside dragons. When Hiccup's dragon Toothless is placed in danger, Hiccup goes to the ends of the earth for his winged friend.

Critics felt that "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" provided a fitting end to the animated series.

"So much of 'The Hidden World' is stuffed with filler material. But in certain wordless moments, this grand final entry really sings," wrote The Atlantic critic David Sims

"Fighting With My Family" was applauded as a strong sports comedy.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 92%

Summary: The sports comedy "Fighting With My Family" tells the story of British teenager Raya Knight (Florence Pugh) and her brother Zak (Jack Lowden) as they receive a rare opportunity to audition for the WWE. When Raya is accepted and her brother is left behind, she pushes herself to earn acclaim for her family in the world of wrestling.

Critics admired the film for its earnest message, with many giving particular praise to Pugh for her electrifying performance.

"Pugh is the film's main weapon," wrote Charlotte O'Sullivan for the London Evening Standard. "Hauntingly intense in 'The Falling' and 'Lady Macbeth,' the 23-year-old turns out to be an effortlessly nuanced comedian."

"Us" was hailed as an intriguing, original horror film.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 93%

Summary: In the horror thriller"Us," a paranoid Adelaide (Lupita Nyong'o) is already reluctant to visit her family's vacation home with her husband (Winston Duke) and children. But as sinister signs crop around them, Adelaide grows more assured that something dangerous is stalking their family.

Film critics received "Us" as a riveting follow-up to Jordan Peele's debut horror film "Get Out," with some even saying that it expanded his scope as a director.

"As 'Get Out' made evident, [Jordan] Peele can be regarded as an attentive filmmaker with the mind of an anthropologist," wrote critic Poulomi Das for Qrius. "'Us' doesn't just further that reputation, but also cements the expansive scope of his ambitions."

Critics called "Avengers: Endgame" a landmark film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 94%

Summary: Following the universe-shattering events of "Avengers: Infinity War," Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), and the rest of the Avengers attempt to turn back time and save half of humanity from being wiped away for good.

Critics called "Avengers: Endgame" a masterful conclusion to a long-running arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As Oliver Jones wrote for the Observer: "What you will be getting when you walk into an inevitably overstuffed movie theater is something singular that reflects our age in a way that none of the MCU films that preceded it have-indeed, very few Hollywood spectacles ever have."

"The Peanut Butter Falcon" was received as a warm and emotional drama.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%

Summary: In "The Peanut Butter Falcon," ambitious Zak (Zack Gottsagen) runs away from his life in a nursing home in the hopes of meeting his wrestling idol (Thomas Haden Church).

Along the way, Zak connects with an outsider named Tyler (Shia LaBeouf) and they form a fast friendship during their misadventures.

Reviewers had little to criticize about "The Peanut Butter Falcon," hailing it as an affecting drama with well-earned high points from the cast.

"'The Peanut Butter Falcon' isn't shy of pushing your buttons, but the overall effect has an innocent charm and frankness, and LaBeouf brings a winning combination of toughness and soul," wrote The Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw

Critics adored "Toy Story 4" for its thoughtful themes and dazzling animation.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97%

Summary: The last installment in Pixar's "Toy Story" series follows Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen) as they accompany their new child Bonnie on a road trip with her family. When the group gets separated, Woody does his best to get home before he's left behind.

Even though this is the fourth film in a series, "Toy Story 4" still impressed critics with its thoughtful story.

"It doesn't put you through the emotional wringer the way its predecessor did, but it's consistently inventive, funny, witty, and heartfelt,"Peter Rainer wrote for Christian Science Monitor. "In other words, it's a lot better than it has any right to be."

"Booksmart" was commended for its smart script and modern feel.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97%

Summary: Upon realizing that their party-hard classmates have gotten into the same elite colleges they studied so hard to attend, Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) decide to go all out before they graduate with a night of partying and irresponsible behavior.

Critics lauded "Booksmart" for breathing new life into the coming-of-age comedy genre, with some likening director Olivia Wilde to John Hughes.

"It's raunchy and kind of gross at times, but there is such heart, sweetness, and honesty about high school," wrote Christy Lemire for Film Week

Critics praised "The Farewell" as one of the most compelling dramas of the year.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 99%

Summary: Upon hearing that her grandmother has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, Billi (Awkwafina) is told by her parents to keep quiet about it on their trip to China.

Torn by her love for her grandmother and her promise to her parents, Billi grapples with the secret in a world away from home.

"The Farewell" earned acclaim for its subtle, emotional script and the groundbreaking talents of its cast.

"Immigrants, for whom such experiences often overlap in intimate ways, can tell some of the most compelling stories about the human condition and the dislocating shocks of modernity," wrote Zoë Hu for the New Republic

Lady Gaga won her first Academy Award, bringing her one step closer to EGOT status.

Gaga rose to fame with pop hits like "Just Dance" and "Poker Face," but she's proven to be an impressive actress as well. Gaga took her acting career to new heights by starring alongside Bradley Cooper in a 2018 remake of "A Star Is Born."

The 33-year-old's role as singer-songwriter Ally earned her recognition at this year's major award shows. She kicked off 2019 by winning the Golden Globe for best original song for a motion picture for "Shallow" (from "A Star Is Born") and earned a nomination for best performance by an actress in a drama motion picture.

Gaga went on to earn two SAG Award nominations and five total Grammy Award nominations. At the latter award show, she went home with three trophies: best pop solo performance for "Joanne (Where Do You Think You're Goin'?)," best pop duo/group performance for "Shallow," and best song written for visual media for "Shallow."

The entertainer also won her first Oscar. "Shallow" beat out the competition to nab the award for best original song and Gaga was nominated for best leading actress.

Aside from "A Star Is Born," Gaga continued her Las Vegas residency, which will end in 2020, and launched her own makeup line in September called Haus Laboratories. The collection (comprised of lip liners, gloss, and eyeliner, among other beauty products) was praised for its quality and sleek design

Gaga's also working on her sixth studio album and is set to star in a Ridley Scott-directed film about the Gucci family. She'll play Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci.

After breaking up six years ago, the Jonas Brothers made a glorious comeback.

In February, siblings Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas, and Kevin Jonas returned to the spotlight as a band and released a catchy new song called "Sucker," which reached the No. 1 spot on pop music charts.

Their accompanying music video for the track also gained plenty of attention for featuring all their partners: Priyanka Chopra (who wed Nick in December 2018), Sophie Turner (Joe's then fiancée and now wife after tying the knot in Las Vegas in May), and Danielle Jonas (Kevin's wife since 2009).

The band also released an Amazon documentary called "Chasing Happiness," which took viewers through their rise to fame, complete with shocking revelations and heartfelt moments.

In June, they released their fifth studio album called "Happiness Begins" and embarked on a tour with shows scheduled from August 2019 through February 2020. They also planned on releasing a memoir titled "Blood" in November 2019, but it has now been pushed back to March 17, 2020.

The Jonas Brothers won an MTV Video Music Award for best pop video for "Sucker," plus two Teen Choice Awards for choice summer group and the decade award.

Billie Eilish was one of 2019's breakout stars.

The 17-year-old Los Angeles native wasn't completely unknown prior to this year ("Ocean Eyes" was her first big track), but her debut album titled "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" added to her popularity. In April, she made history as the first artist born in the 2000s to have a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart.

Eilish's dark-pop sound and whisper-like vocals, heard in songs like "Bad Guy" and "Bury a Friend," set her apart from other musicians. The accompanying music videos for those two tracks also have a combined total of more than 900 million views.

The singer also appeared at Coachella, made her "Saturday Night Live" debut with a trippy, gravity-defying performance, and embarked on a tour.

In November, Eilish released a new track called "Everything I Wanted." She also got nominated for six Grammy Awards and made history as the youngest artist to be nominated in all of the show's top categories.

Rami Malek earned an Oscar for his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody."

Malek was praised for his performance in the 2018 film and was a popular face at 2019's major award shows. He won a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, and an Academy Award for his leading role in the biopic.

At the award shows, the actor also went viral for introducing himself to Lady Gaga, getting his bow tie adjusted by the "Star Is Born" actress, and having an awkward onstage moment with Nicole Kidman

Malek also returned as computer hacker Elliot Alderson for the fourth and final season of USA's "Mr. Robot" and will be starring as the villain in the upcoming "James Bond" film called "No Time to Die." The movie hits theaters on April 8, 2020.

Six years after releasing her debut studio album and dominating pop charts, Ariana Grande finally won her first Grammy.

Grande skipped on attending the award show in February, but she won the award for best pop vocal album for 2018's "Sweetener." In 2019, she also won three awards at the MTV VMAs and two trophies at the Billboard Music Awards.

The 26-year-old singer enjoyed success with "7 Rings" from her 2018 album "Thank U, Next" and headlined Coachella. She also became the first artist to occupy the top three spots on the Billboard 100 chart since The Beatles in 1964 with "7 Rings,""Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored," and "Thank U, Next."

Grande served as a coexecutive producer for the "Charlie's Angels" reboot soundtrack and lent her voice to a few songs, including "Don't Call Me Angel" with Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey. In addition, she teamed up with Lizzo for a remix of "Good as Hell" and kicked off her Sweetener World Tour in March 2019.

Keanu Reeves had a resurgence in popularity in 2019.

Aside from going viral for his acts of kindness, the actor starred in several movies. He played the titular character in "John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum," which earned a critics score of 90% and an audience rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes

The actor also had a scene-stealing role as himself in the Netflix comedy "Always Be My Maybe" and went on to become a meme. Reeves voiced motorcycle stuntman action figure Duke Caboom in "Toy Story 4" and fans were also thrilled that the actor was named the new face of Saint Laurent.

Reeves even had a humble, priceless reaction to being labeled the "internet's boyfriend."

"I've been what?" Reeves told Entertainment Weekly and PeopleTV in June. "That's wacky. The positivity's great. It was really special how 'John Wick' was embraced, and working on 'Always Be My Maybe,' great. Ali Wong and Randall Park [are] just really wonderful artists and people, and it was just really cool to get a chance to play with them."

To celebrate his success and decades-long career, Reeves participated in a hand and footprint ceremony at Hollywood's TCL Chinese Theatre in May. It was also revealed that he'll reprise his role as Neo for a fourth "Matrix" movie

Next, you can catch Reeves playing a wise tumbleweed in "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run," in theaters on May 22, 2020.

Jennifer Lopez's professional and personal life thrived in 2019.

Lopez showed no signs of slowing down in 2019. She performed a controversial Motown tribute at the Grammys, went on a strict 10-day no-carb, no-sugar challenge to prepare for her role as a stripper in "Hustlers," and learned how to pole dance for the film.

In March, Lopez and former athlete Alex Rodriguez got engaged while on vacation in the Bahamas, after dating for two years.

Forbes named Kylie Jenner the youngest "self-made" billionaire.

The term "self-made" being applied to Jenner, who has grown up in the spotlight as the daughter of Kris Jenner and Caitlyn Jenner, caused waves of backlash.

She initially defended it, saying that her parents "cut her off" when she was 15 and she "spent every last dime that I had" on launching Kylie Cosmetics.

Two months later, she told the New York Times: "I can't say I've done it by myself. If they're just talking finances, technically, yes, I don't have any inherited money. But I have had a lot of help and a huge platform." Regardless of how she reached the financial milestone though, Jenner did cross the billionaire threshold this year.

A few months later, he once again played the webslinger in "Spider-Man: Far From Home," which directly followed the events of "Endgame." Both films crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office.

In August, Holland's future with Marvel was shaken up after Deadline reported that Sony and Disney were unable to reach a financial agreement regarding Spider-Man. As a result, the Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, wouldn't produce any future "Spider-Man" films and Holland's version of the character wouldn't be able to appear in the MCU.

The following month, it was revealed that the studios ended their feud and will be coproducing the upcoming third "Spider-Man" film, which hits theaters on July 16, 2021.

Fans rejoiced and the 23-year-old reacted to the good news by posting a scene from "The Wolf of Wall Street," which showed Leonardo DiCaprio's character giving a speech about "not leaving."

Holland recently shaved off his hair for his role in a movie called "Cherry" with the Russo Brothers and will voice a character alongside Will Smith in the animated movie "Spies in Disguise." The film hits theaters on December 25, 2019.

In May, Rihanna kicked off the launch of her Fenty fashion brand with a pop-up store in Paris on Wednesday. The collection was also made available online. People also praised the fashion line for releasing promotional photos that appeared to be unedited and showed imperfections.

This year, French luxury goods giant LVMH acquired Fenty and Rihanna became the "first woman to create an original brand at LVMH and the first woman of color at the top of an LVMH maison," according to the New York Times.

In June, she was crowned the world's richest female musician, with an estimated net worth of $600 million, according to Forbes

Robert Downey Jr. gave a heart-wrenching performance as Tony Stark/Iron Man in "Avengers: Endgame."

Downey Jr. made his debut as the "genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist" in "Iron Man," which was released 11 years ago. Since then, he's been a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is referred to as "the godfather" by costar Tom Holland.

In "Avengers: Endgame," Tony made the ultimate sacrifice for his family and friends by wielding the power of the six Infinity Stones to snap away Thanos and his army. Because of the power of the stones, he didn't survive. The result was a gut-wrenching death season and emotional funeral near the end of the blockbuster film.

Even though that's the last time we'll see Downey Jr. suit up as Iron Man, MCU costar Jeff Goldblum said that the actor will voice the character for Marvel's upcoming animated series called "What If...?"

The actor was also honored with the Disney Legends Award at Disney's D23 convention in Anaheim, California in August.

The star-studded cast includes Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and Salma Hayek.

Joaquin Phoenix's performance as the Joker was praised by fans and critics.

In several interviews, the actor explained how he transformed into Arthur Fleck by losing 52 pounds. Phoenix told Jimmy Kimmel that losing weight was so challenging that he had to motivate himself to climb stairs, but he also found it to be "empowering."

Stars like Jessica Chastain called Phoenix's take on the Joker one of the "greatest pieces of acting" she's ever seen and the film has generated plenty of Oscar buzz

The hype surrounding "Joker" also led fans to flock to stairs in the Bronx that were featured in the film so they could take Instagram-worthy photos and videos (which resulted in outrage among the borough's residents), and the character was a popular choice for attendees at New York Comic Con

"Joker" went on to hit $1 billion at the box office and become the first R-rated movie in history to do so.

She also became the first woman of Asian descent to win that award since Yoko Shimada did so in 1980 for "Shogun."

In her emotional acceptance speech, the actress spoke in Korean and told her parents that she loves them, then bowed to them respectfully from the stage.

Oh went on to host "Saturday Night Live" in March and is the third Asian woman to do so, following in the footsteps of Lucy Liu and Awkwafina.

  • The bond between a person and their pet could be one of the strongest they'll ever have.
  • These 14 celebrities took their love to the next level by getting permanent tributes to their pets inked on their skin.
  • Miley Cyrus has four separate tattoos for her pets, including one for her blowfish.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

When a celebrity reveals a tattoo in honor of their significant other, the entire world collectively holds its breath — or silently judges. What happens if they break up? Will they keep it, get it removed, or cover it up?

Thankfully, the bond between a human and their pet is much purer, and most likely won't involve a dramatic break-up.

Keep scrolling to see 14 celebrities who have shown how much they care for their pets with a tattoo (or four).

Pink has two tats dedicated to her dogs: a portrait of her bulldog, Elvis, accompanied by a Bible verse and the phrase "Sir Corky Moore 89-03."

Sir Corky Moore was Pink's childhood dog, a West Highland terrier. The numbers "89-03" represent his birth year and the year he died.

Her other pet tattoo is a portrait of her bulldog Elvis who died in 2007 while the "Can We Pretend" singer was away. The portrait is accompanied by the Bible verse, "A time to weep, a time to laugh, a time to mourn, a time to dance, sleep in peace my darling, I release you."

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas have matching portraits of their dog, Waldo Picasso, who sadly died after getting hit by a car shortly after their honeymoon.

Over the summer, their Alaskan Klee Kai pup, named Waldo Picasso, died in what's been called a "freak accident." Waldo broke free of his leash and ran into incoming traffic.

Just two days later, the newlyweds headed over to Bang Bang Ink, a celebrity favorite, and both got matching portraits of Waldo.

Jennifer Aniston's only tattoo is her late dog's name, Norman, on her foot.

Aniston had a very special bond with her Welsh corgi-terrier mix, as evidenced by this 2011 "Inside the Actor's Studio" interview — when asked what her favorite word is, she replied "Norman." The interview was just a few weeks after Norman had died at age 15.

A few months later, she was spotted with her pooch's name on the inside of her right foot.

Miley Cyrus has a portrait of her late dog, Floyd, inked on her bicep, and of her late blowfish, Pablow. She also has tats dedicated to her dogs Emu and Mary Jane.

Cyrus is a known animal lover andtattoo enthusiast, so of course she's paid homage to several of her many pets.

First up is her sweet portrait of Floyd, her Alaskan Klee Kai who died suddenly in 2014. She has the side of Floyd's face, with the phrase "With a little help from my fwends," on her rib cage. Cyrus got the ink alongside her friends Katy Weaver and Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne.

Her second pet-inspired tattoo is a realistic rendering of her blowfish, Pablow. In addition to naming a song after him on her album "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz,"Cyrus inked him on her arm.

Her last two animal tattoos are of Mary Jane (bottom right), her longtime canine companion, and of Emu (bottom left), whom she adopted a few months after Floyd died. They're on each of her arms.

Ariana Grande has two tattoos dedicated to her dogs Toulouse and Myron, respectively.

The "Boyfriend" singer has at least 47 tattoos, according to Insider's Callie Ahlgrim. At least two of them are dedicated to her growing brood of animals. In November 2019, she revealed the latest addition to her "glove" was the name of her pooch and music video co-star, Toulouse.

During a behind-the-scenes look at her "thank u, next" music video shoot, it was revealed that Grande had covered up a piece of ink dedicated to ex-fiancé Pete Davidson's father. The new tattoo reads "Myron."

Myron was originally the dog of Grande's then-boyfriend, Mac Miller. Miller adopted Myron in 2017 while the two were still together. When Miller died in September 2018, Grande adopted Myron, and revealed the ink a few weeks later.

At first, Demi Lovato paid tribute to her dog with just the phrase, "Buddy was here," but she added his portrait in January 2019.

Lovato's dog Buddy was killed by a coyote in 2015, after only receiving him for Christmas six months prior. In 2016, she told Refinery29 she had gotten the phrase "Buddy was here" tattooed on her foot in "a font specifically chosen to look like a child's handwriting."

Three years later, in early 2019, Lovato added a portrait of Buddy's face by tattoo artist to the stars, Dr. Woo. She shared the photo on her Instagram story and captioned it, "Thank you @_dr_woo_ for the incredible portrait of my late baby angel Buddy."

Pete Davidson inked a tribute to Piggy Smallz, the pig he shared with Ariana Grande, on his stomach shortly before they broke up.

Grande adopted Piggy Smallz, a pig, as an emotional support animal shortly after the death of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller — and a couple of weeks before she and Davidson broke up.

But in that small window, Davidson found the time to get some ink dedicated to Piggy on his torso by one of Grande's favorite tattoo artists, Mira Mariah.

Lena Dunham has a small rendering of her late cat, Gia, on her shoulder blade.

Gia (full name Gia Marie Carangi) was one of Dunham's sphinx cats. Sadly, Dunham only had Gia for nine months before she died in June 2018. Two months later, on International Cat Day, Dunham debuted her tattoo, a simple portrait of Gia's head. "Happy #InternationalCatDay from everyone's favorite cat lady," she captioned the tweet.

Zoey Deutch has her dog Maybelle's face on one side of her ankle, and Maybelle's name on the other side.

First, Deutch got Maybelle's name tattooed on her heel in 2016. Two years later, she got a portrait of Maybelle's face on the other side of her ankle, done by Dr. Woo.

The "Politician" star discussed her tattoo during an episode of "The Late Late Show with James Corden" in May 2018, soon after she had gotten the new piece of ink. "I have 'Maybelle' tattooed on the other side of my ankle, so just in case I forget what she looks like or what her name is, I just look right down on my foot," she said.

Amber Rose has a portrait of her two pugs, Pauly and Franky, on her arm.

Rose is no stranger to ink, but we're partial to this very sweet tat dedicated to her pugs. She debuted this sizable piece in 2013.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan has his late dog Bisou's name tatted on his forearm. "Bisou" is French for kiss.

Morgan got his late pup Bisou's name tattooed on his arm in 2015, a few years after she died at age 12.

"The Walking Dead" star was on the Venice Beach boardwalk in the late '90s when he came across some kids selling puppies out of a cardboard box. While they were asking $300 per puppy, Morgan gave them $20, and said "give me the one that won't make it through the day." The two were together for over a decade after that.

Ruby Rose has her dog, Bubbles, tattooed on her hand, surrounded by bubbles, obviously.

Rose got the tattoo dedicated to Bubbles back in 2013, when she tweeted,"Nobody is perfect ... except my dog." She also has a tiny finger tattoo that simply reads "King," in honor of another one of her dogs.

Another one of Rose's tattoos isn't dedicated to a specific animal, but is the phrase, "Be the person your dog thinks you are."

Ashley Tisdale got a red ink tattoo of her late dog's name, Maui, on her forearm.

Maui died over the summer, on June 21, 2019, after getting taken to the animal hospital with undisclosed health problems only five days prior.

Three days later, Tisdale and her husband, Christopher French, got matching tattoos to celebrate Maui's life. Tisdale got her beloved pup's name, while French got a paw-print.

  • Each week, we're listing players to start or sit in fantasy football.
  • As always, these are less obvious choices — players whom fantasy owners might be on the cusp of starting or sitting.
  • Here are our start 'em, sit 'ems for Week 11 of the NFL season.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Week 12 of the NFL season is here and we're back with another start-sit for fantasy football.

We're coming off a week where we hit on 50% of our picks, nailing almost all of our "sit" picks, but missing on most of our "start" picks.

We'll look to rebound for Week 12, which is a big week on the NFL schedule. As usual, we try to pick less obvious choices — players whom fantasy owners might be on the cusp of starting or sitting.

Here are our start/sits for fantasy football in Week 12.

START: Baker Mayfield, QB

Team: Cleveland Browns

Week 12 opponent: vs. Miami Dolphins

Why you should start him: After a horrendous first half of the season, Mayfield is QB10 over the last three weeks, in part because he doesn't have any interceptions. Miami's effort has improved lately, but they still rank dead-last in defensive DVOA. Look for Mayfield and the Browns to keep rolling.

SIT: Jameis Winston, QB

Team: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Week 12 opponent: at Atlanta Falcons

Why you should sit him: Winston presents a high ceiling, but his interceptions make him a risk each week. He has 13 interceptions over the past five games, and the Falcons defense has come out of the bye with a vengeance while stealing wins over the Saints and Panthers.

START: Jeff Driskel, QB

Team: Detroit Lions

Week 12 opponent: at Washington Redskins

Why you should start him: Driskel has been viable in fantasy through two games. This week, he gets a Washington team ranked 28th in pass defense DVOA. Outside of Sam Darnold last week (QB7), Washington hasn't allowed huge fantasy performances to quarterbacks, but with the Detroit run game up in the air, Driskel may look to throw a bit more than some previous quarterbacks.

SIT: Aaron Rodgers, QB

Team: Green Bay Packers

Week 12 opponent: at San Francisco 49ers

Why you should sit him: Rodgers' performances have varied this season based on the script. Rodgers has had five games with one touchdown or less — three of them have come on days when Aaron Jones found the end zone on multiple occasions. So far, the 49ers' pass defense has been better than their run defense, which means both Jones and Jamaal Williams could see increased touches. There's no harm in playing Rodgers, but we're not expecting him to finish as a top-10 quarterback this week.

START: Kareem Hunt, RB

Team: Cleveland Browns

Week 12 opponent: vs. Miami Dolphins

Why you should start him: Hunt has a role in the Browns offense. In two games, he's had 11 and 12 touches, totaling 74 and 58 scoreless yards, both against strong defenses in Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Hunt should be able to make the most of his touches this week against the Dolphins' porous defense and perhaps even find the end zone.

SIT: Falcons running backs

Team: Atlanta Falcons

Week 12 opponent: vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Why you should sit him: The Bucs still possess the No. 1 run defense by DVOA. With Devonta Freeman out, Brian Hill looked set to take the reins in Week 11. He had 15 carries for just 30 yards (he did have a touchdown called back). Qadree Ollison ended up getting Atlanta's only rushing score of the day on one of his four carries. While Hill is getting the carries, he's not efficient, and the Bucs even managed to stop Christian McCaffrey from scoring last week. Stay away from this backfield situation.

START: Jaylen Samuels, RB

Team: Pittsburgh Steelers

Week 12 opponent: at Cincinnati Bengals

Why you should start him: Samuels has a great matchup with the league's second-worst defense if James Conner misses the game with a shoulder injury. Even if Conner plays, he's likely to be limited, meaning Samuels could still be worth a start. The Bengals have given up either 100 yards rushing or a rushing touchdown to an opposing RB in every game this season.

SIT: Joe Mixon, RB

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

Week 12 opponent: vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Why you should sit him: Mixon has seen his touches blow up since the Bengals' bye, with 45 over the last two games. He scored his first rushing touchdown last week against the Raiders. However, the Steelers haven't allowed a running back to top 100 yards all season.

START: Devin Singletary, RB

Team: Buffalo Bills

Week 12 opponent: vs. Denver Broncos

Why you should start him: Singletary has been one of the most efficient running backs in football the last four weeks, averaging 5.3 yards per touch. Denver has a strong defense, but six running backs this season have produced 80 total yards or more against them. With Singletary involved in both the run and pass game and Frank Gore losing touches, he has a chance for a big day.

SIT: Kalen Ballage, RB

Team: Miami Dolphins

Week 12 opponent: at Cleveland Browns

Why you should sit him: Ballage has been the most inefficient running back this season and one of the most inefficient running backs in NFL history. It's nice that he gets the touches in Miami, and he saved fantasy owners last week with a touchdown in his nine-yard performance. But a game on the road, where the Dolphins are expected to trail, is not one to target.

START: Odell Beckham Jr., WR

Team: Cleveland Browns

Week 12 opponent: vs. Miami Dolphins

Why you should start him: In the first start/sit column of the year while explaining our method of choosing borderline players, I wrote, "This list avoids obvious players — of course, you're going to start Odell Beckham Jr." Now Beckham finds himself on the periphery of lineups as he's slogged through a down 2019 season. So, we're here to say: start him with confidence this week. Over the last four weeks, Beckham has been a top-20 receiver in yards and catches. If he had found the end zone in any of those matchups, the fantasy view of him would be much different. Beckham gets the Dolphins this week and the Bengals in Week 14. If he doesn't break out now, it may never happen.

SIT: Terry McLaurin, WR

Team: Washington Redskins

Week 12 opponent: vs. Detroit Lions

Why you should sit him: Whether it is regression, the rookie wall, or the effect of Dwayne Haskins, McLaurin's slump has now been as long as his strong first half of the season. McLaurin has 12 catches for 158 scoreless yards over the last four weeks. He still gets targeted by Haskins, and last week, he had a 67-yard catch called back, but he's not having the same success with Haskins throwing the ball. He also has a tough matchup, as he will likely see Lions cornerback Darius Slayton in coverage on some routes.

START: Calvin Ridley, WR

Team: Atlanta Falcons

Week 12 opponent: vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Why you should start him: As mentioned, the Bucs own a strong run defense, but their pass defense has been friendly to wide receivers. Ridley is coming off of an eight-catch, 143-yard, 1-touchdown game against the Panthers and should be in line for big numbers if the Falcons are forced to throw.

SIT: Brandin Cooks, WR

Team: Los Angeles Rams

Week 12 opponent: vs. Baltimore Ravens

Why you should sit him: Cooks is heading towards playing as he goes through concussion protocol. However, he's missed essentially four weeks, as he was knocked out of Week 8 early with the concussion, had a bye in Week 9, and missed games in Weeks 10 and 11. We think it's better to play it safe with Cooks, who was having a down season before the concussion anyway, and see how his role looks once he's back on the field.

START: Allen Robinson, WR

Team: Chicago Bears

Week 12 opponent: vs. New York Giants

Why you should start him: Robinson has been a high-ceiling, low-floor fantasy receiver this season. The highs have been lines like 8-97-2 against the Raiders, the lows have been 1-6-0 against the Eagles in Week 9. Nonetheless, whether Mitch Trubisky or Chase Daniel is starting, Robinson has the chance for a big game against a vulnerable Giants pass defense. According to Mike Tagliere of FantasyPros, Robinson is set to face Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker, who is one of the worst graded corners in football.

SIT: Tyler Boyd, WR

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

Week 12 opponent: vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Why you should sit him: Boyd has just one touchdown this season and hasn't topped 65 yards the last five weeks. Last week, after receiving only three targets, Boyd griped about not getting the ball from quarterback Ryan Finley. Perhaps the Bengals force-feed Boyd this week, but the Steelers don't present an easy matchup to do so. He's a risky start, knowing he's finished as a top-20 WR just twice this season.

START: Ryan Griffin, TE

Team: New York Jets

Week 12 opponent: vs. Oakland Raiders

Why you should start him: Since Week 6, Griffin is TE4 in fantasy, thanks to four touchdowns and three games with 50-plus yards. In that stretch, he's also had two clunkers, games with just one catch for one yard and -2 yards. With tight end being what is, he's still worth a shot, especially against the Raiders, who will be making an early start on the road.

SIT: Noah Fant, TE

Team: Denver Broncos

Week 12 opponent: at Buffalo Bills

Why you should sit him: Fant has been on the rise in recent weeks, but this week, he draws a brutal matchup against the Bills, who have all but shut down opposing tight ends this year. Fant has been getting a lot of targets but catching just 56% of them. That means he'd need a lot of targets to produce against the Bills.

hp tiny house 6

  • You can stay in a "Harry Potter"-themed tiny home that's located an hour and a half outside of New York City in Marlboro, New York.
  • The 300-square-foot house features the Hogwarts house flags, floating candles, copies of The Quibbler and The Daily Prophet, and a model of the Mirror of Erised.
  • The home can sleep four guests, and it features three beds, one bathroom, and a full kitchen. It also sits on a 30-acre farm.
  • The home is a limited-time pop-up for the winter that will cost $159 per night, according to its Airbnb listing. You can see the full listing here.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

You can rent a 300-square-foot "Harry Potter"-themed tiny home on Airbnb.

The house sits on a 30-acre farm in Marlboro, New York, according to its Airbnb listing.

Every part of the tiny space has been decorated in an ode to J.K. Rowling's world.

When you enter the home, you'll see floating candles, flags representing the Hogwarts houses, and other "Harry Potter" artwork.

The candles mimic those that hang in the Great Hall. A figurine that looks like Severus Snape also hangs by the door.

The stairs in the home have a gold finish and angular shape that appear to be a nod to the Deathly Hallows.

Despite its small size, the house features three beds, each of which has a magical look.

The home can sleep a total of four guests, according to its listing. Two of the beds are in lofts, while one is on the main floor.

The master bedroom has a king-sized bed, complete with an "Expecto Patronum" pillow and Hogwarts throw blanket.

Details from "Harry Potter" are everywhere you look in the house. For instance, every piece of this bedroom set references the series.

One pillow features Harry Potter's famous glasses and scar, while the other has "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good" emblazoned on it, in a nod to the Marauder's Map.

Meanwhile, the bedspread and throw blanket both feature symbols from the books, like Harry's Patronus, Hedwig the owl, and the crest of Gryffindor.

Decor inspired by the series covers the walls, including a model of the Mirror of Erised in the kitchen.

Fans of the series will recognize the mirror from "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

The kitchen table even features copies of The Daily Prophet and The Quibbler, giving muggles a chance to catch up on the happenings of the wizarding world.

The table extends to seat more guests or to provide space for working on a laptop.

The house also features outdoor dining furniture and a fire pit, according to the listing.

Remote-controlled hanging lights make the window look like it's covered in stars.

The effect is similar to the ceiling in the Great Hall that's enchanted to look like the sky.

There is also a second tiny home on the property that you can rent out if you have a larger party.

But only one of the homes has magical decor.

WiFi, heating, a functioning shower, and linens are included with the reservation.

The house is a limited-time pop-up this winter, so fans won't have long to give this "Harry Potter" experience a try.

The tiny house costs $159 per night.

You can check out the full Airbnb listing here.

frozen 2 still anna elsa

  • Disney's sequel to its animated hit movie "Frozen" arrives in theaters on November 22.
  • Keep reading to see the full cast of voice actors who play the returning characters like Queen Elsa and Princess Anna, along with newcomers like Yelena, Honeymaren, and Ryder.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

The A-list cast of Disney's billion-dollar movie "Frozen" all returned for the new sequel, which arrives in theaters on November 22. But in addition to Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad, other actors like Evan Rachel Wood and Martha Plimpton have joined the cast.

Keep reading to what the cast of "Frozen 2" looks like in real life.

Queen Elsa is voiced by Broadway icon Idina Menzel.

Idina Menzel provides the powerhouse vocals for Queen Elsa's regular scenes in addition to the epic ballads she sings throughout both films.

In "Frozen 2," Elsa's powers are tested as she ventures into an enchanted forest protected by the spirits of water, earth, wind, and fire. And no, Elsa doesn't have any sort of love interest (gay or otherwise) in the second "Frozen" movie.

Young Elsa was voiced by Mattea Conforti.

"Frozen 2" opens with a flashback to a night when Anna and Elsa were much younger, before Elsa's powers were made into a big secret. Actress Mattea Conforti provided the voice for that littler version of Elsa.

Princess Anna is played by Kristen Bell.

Kristen Bell, currently the star of NBC's critically-acclaimed comedy "The Good Place," also does the singing for her character's musical moments in "Frozen 2."

The sequel shows Anna confronting the bumpy road of long-term relationships as she and Kristoff try to figure out if "happily ever after" is a real thing.

Young Anna is voiced by Hadley Gannaway.

We see this younger version of Anna alongside Elsa in the movie's opening flashback sequence.

King Agnarr is played by Alfred Molina.

In the first "Frozen" movie, Anna and Elsa's father King Agnarr spoke only a handful of lines. Back then he was voiced by Maurice LaMarche.

Now, in "Frozen 2," actor Alfred Molina ("Spider-Man 2") took over the role for the king's expanded part in the flashbacks.

Queen Iduna is voiced by Evan Rachel Wood.

Like Agnarr, Queen Iduna was originally voiced by someone else in the first movie. It was actually the film's cocreator and director Jennifer Lee who provided vocals back then (for Iduna's sole line: "She's ice cold").

Now "Westworld" star Evan Rachel Wood voices Queen Iduna in "Frozen 2," and the actress sung the opening song for the movie as well ("All Is Found").

Kristoff and Sven are both played by Jonathan Groff.

Jonathan Groff, a Broadway star and also one of the lead actors on Netflix's "Mindhunter" series, pulls double duty in the "Frozen" movies as both Kristoff and his reindeer Sven.

Olaf is voiced by Josh Gad.

The lovable snowman, brought to life by Elsa in the first "Frozen" movie, is played by actor Josh Gad, who had another breakout role in a Disney movie as LeFou in the 2017 remake of "Beauty and the Beast."

Pabbie the troll is voiced by Ciarán Hinds.

Pabbie is the leader of the trolls, who live away from Arendelle but play a key part in both "Frozen" movies when it comes to explaining the magic Elsa possesses.

Ex-"Game of Thrones" actor Ciarán Hinds (who played Mance Rayder in the HBO show) is the voice of Pabbie. Hinds voiced Pabbie in the first movie, too.

Yelena, a new character in the sequel, is played by Martha Plimpton.

Yelena is the leader of the Northundra people, who were trapped in the enchanted forest years ago. She's played by actress Martha Plimpton (the breakout star of "The Goonies" and costar on "Younger" and "The Good Wife").

Honeymaren is played by Rachel Matthews.

Honeymaren is another one of the Northundra people who meets Anna and Elsa in "Frozen 2." Actress Rachel Matthews, the costar of "Happy Death Day" and "Happy Death Day 2U," provided the voice for this new character.

Ryder is voiced by Jason Ritter.

Ryder is the third Northundra character introduced inside the enchanted forest. Like Kristoff, Ryder is a fella who has a special bond with reindeer.

He's played by actor Jason Ritter, who is currently costarring on ABC's "A Million Little Things" and has appeared on Comedy Central's "Drunk History."

Last but not least, Lieutenant Mattias is played by Sterling K. Brown.

The star of NBC's "This Is Us" is yet another new character in "Frozen 2." Lieutenant Mattias is a soldier of Arendelle who was also trapped in the enchanted forest. He meets Anna and Elsa in "Frozen 2," and is relieved to finally hear news of his home city.

target trader joes maternity shoot

  • Faith Money took hilariously realistic maternity photos at Target and Trader Joe's with her husband and three boys.
  • "I wanted to do something fun, real, and easy to capture the crazy of being a parent of almost four," she told Insider.
  • She posed with shelves of diapers, ate her favorite snacks, and cast longing glances at bottles of wine.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Some maternity photo shoots involve flowing gowns, glowing sunsets, and expansive fields of flowers touched by a gentle breeze.

Not this one.

As the mother of three boys with another on the way, Faith Money wanted to take maternity photos that capture what mom life is really like. Together with her sister, Kimmie Lineback of Kimmie Rae Photography, Money and her family went to take portraits at the places they know best — Target and Trader Joe's.

Faith and Austin Money live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with their three boys and they have a fourth son on the way.

Faith and her husband are both Montessori teachers. Faith is due in December.

Money hadn't planned to take maternity photos this time around. But her sister, a part-time photographer named Kimmie Lineback, offered to take them for her.

Money hadn't done a maternity photo shoot since she was pregnant with her oldest son.

Since this is her fourth pregnancy, she wanted to do things a little differently.

She decided to put a new spin on maternity photos.

"I wanted to do something fun, real, and easy to capture the crazy of being a parent of almost four," she told Insider.

"And we thought what better place than my favorite mom places, Trader Joe's and Target!" she added.

They wanted photos that show what parenting is really like.

So one weeknight, after everyone had finished work and school, the whole family got dressed up to go grocery shopping.

"We went to Target first, and there was still quite a bit of foot traffic due to the holiday rush," she said.

Money's sister took photos of her surrounded by diapers ...

"It was a little chaotic and we got some interesting looks, but most people would just smile and sneak around us (all while probably thinking we were nuts, as we shoved my sister on the shelf surrounded by diapers)," Lineback said.

... and sitting in the aisles of Target with her favorite snacks.

"Everyone was super nice and smiling as we took bags of chips from the shelf to get the perfect picture," Money said.

Next, they stopped at Trader Joe's, where Money visited the sample table.

There are usually tons of leftover samples to enjoy by the end of the night, according to Trader Joe's employees.

"When my husband told the cashier what we were doing, she said, 'Is that a thing?' To which he replied, 'I guess it is now!'" she said.

Couples have also taken engagement and wedding photos at their favorite stores.

Money hopes the photos capture what being a mom is really like, with both its challenges and rewarding moments.

Cookie butter makes everything better, though.

"I hope people see that this is real motherhood," she said.

"Rushing from work, layering on makeup over the makeup you wore all day, begging your kids to wear the button down, and heading into the stores to cry over the wine you can't drink right now," she said.

Being honest about the ups and downs of parenting can help others feel less alone.

"I also hope they see that having a big family (especially one filled with boys) can be amazing and oh-so-happy!"

The flower section at Trader Joe's almost looks like an open field.

"We get a lot of 'Oh, four boys … I'm so sorry' or 'Bless you.' While four boys is quite the handful, they are the biggest blessing we could have ever asked for."

What 19 celebrities look like with and without bangs

beyonce with and without bangs

  • Over the years many stars have rocked styles with and without bangs.
  • Stars like Zooey Deschanel and Owen Wilson wear bangs so frequently that it's a bit shocking to see them without them.
  • Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Reese Witherspoon, and Rihanna have all debuted bangs over the years.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Bangs are a pretty simple yet dramatic way to change up anyone's look — and many celebrities seem to enjoy trying out this style. Over the years, many stars have worn their hair in both bang-free blowouts and full-fringe, side-swept looks.

Here's what 19 celebrities look like with and without bangs.

In 2013 Kim Kardashian wore full, fringed bangs.

Back in 2013, while out and about in New York City, Kim Kardashian switched up her look and added a fringe.

Kardashian is now known for having a center part.

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star has more or less stuck to this bang-free look over the years.

Back in 2013, Priyanka Chopra sported bangs.

She was another 2013 adopter of the bangs trend.

Chopra is also known to rock a middle part.

These days the "Baywatch" actress oftentimes styles her hair without bangs. She also wore a bangless style during her wedding ceremonies with now-husband Nick Jonas.

"Handmaid's Tale" star Alexis Bledel wore bangs to the 2013 SAG awards.

At the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Alexis Bledel rocked a statement necklace, green dress, and fringe bangs.

At the 2018 Emmys, Bledel kept her hair off of her face.

The "Gilmore Girls" star tucked all of her hair behind her ears for a sleek look at the 2018 Emmys.

Lucy Liu had side-swept bangs in 2004.

The actress' bangs made an appearance at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party back in 2004.

Like Bledel, Liu later chose to go for a tucked-behind-the-ears style.

At the 2019 Tonys, Liu showed off her bangless hairstyle and a purple dress.

Mindy Kaling had bangs while starring on "The Office."

Throughout her time as Kelly Kapoor on the sitcom "The Office," Mindy Kaling occasionally had bangs.

Offscreen, Kaling sometimes opts for a flowy hairstyle with a side part.

At the 2018 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, Kaling wore loose waves and a side part with no bangs in sight.

Zac Efron's bangs were once his signature.

Back during his "High School Musical" days, actor Zac Efron had a side-swept hairstyle that was all the rage in 2008, when this photo was taken.

Efron may have just as much hair now, but he sweeps it up instead of to the side.

These days the "Baywatch" actor sweeps his hair up, as seen in this photo of him at the 2018 Golden Globes.

Zooey Deschanel's signature style is bangs.

"New Girl" star Zooey Deschanel hasn't been seen often without her signature full bangs.

But there was a time when Deschanel didn't have bangs.

The actress looks nearly unrecognizable in this photo from the 2013 Met Gala "PUNK: Chaos to Couture."

Like Deschanel, "Fifty Shades" star Dakota Johnson is known for her soft bangs.

Dakota Johnson wore a fringe when she played Anastasia in the "50 Shades" movie series, so it can be a bit difficult to picture her in any other hairstyle.

However, the actress has gone for a more traditional parted look, too.

At the 2017 Hollywood Film Awards, Johnson wore a soft, bang-free hairstyle.

Laverne Cox briefly had bangs back in 2017.

While attending BeautyCon in 2017, the "Orange Is the New Black" star debuted a fun dark-blonde fringe.

Cox has also been known to wear her hair flowy and parted down the middle.

Laverne Cox has worn her hair parted down the middle many times, too.

Jennifer Lopez had bangs for her role in "The Back-Up Plan."

The 2010 rom-com switched up the singer's look with some fringed bangs.

Read More: Here's how Jennifer Lopez keeps her hair shiny and healthy

Usually, Lopez wears a bangless blowout or ponytail.

The "Medicine" singer usually doesn't have bangs. On many occasions, she styles her hair in a sleek ponytail.

In 2007, Reese Witherspoon had bangs.

The "Big Little Lies" star was rocking this popular mid-2000s hairstyle over a decade ago and she still wears different styles of bangs on red carpets today.

In 2019, Witherspoon often styles her hair bangs-free.

These days the "Legally Blonde" actress usually opts for a middle or side part and a soft blowout.

Unlike other stars, Owen Wilson has mostly stuck with his signature hairstyle.

It seems like this actor has had this hairstyle for decades.

In 2009, he shook things up for a "Night At The Museum" premiere.

It's unusual to see him without his typical blonde bangs.

Rihanna sported a fringe for the 2017 Met Gala.

For the 2017 Met Gala "Comme des Garçons's Rei Kawakubo,"Rihanna had a high bun and bangs.

Rihanna usually doesn't rock bangs.

The beauty mogul and iconic singer styled her hair in a bangs-free ponytail in this photo.

In the early days of the Jonas Brothers, Joe Jonas rocked bangs.

He rocked full bangs and side bangs for quite some time, including in 2012.

Jonas no longer wears bangs.

These days, this Jonas Brother is often seen wearing his hair slicked back or up.

Mila Kunis wore the bangs trend back in 2018.

The actress wore a full fringe to the 2018 Billboard Music Awards.

But it seems she usually doesn't have bangs.

The "Bad Moms" star wears her hair wavy and free with and without bangs.

Beyoncé has been known to rock bangs now and then.

In 2012, the singer wore full bangs to a basketball game in New York City.

However, on many occasions, Beyoncé prefers to go bang-free.

Whether she's rocking a bang-free blowout or a pulled-back ponytail, Beyoncé is known to switch up her style.

Demi Lovato has worn a lot of styles over the years.

The musician has dyed her hair blue, black, and blonde over the years. She's also had side-swept and full bangs.

Lovato doesn't always have bangs.

Over the years, the "Skyscraper" singer has also opted for darker styles sans bangs.

For years, Selena Gomez has worn side-swept bangs.

In 2011, the musician wore dramatic side-swept bangs and a deep side part in her hair.

But Gomez doesn't always have bangs.

The "Wolves" singer has also been spotted on many occasions wearing almost all of her hair pulled back.

Kacey Musgraves doesn't usually have full bangs.

While attending a November 2019 screening of "The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show," the musician debuted full bangs.

But Musgraves usually doesn't have bangs.

The "Slow Burn" singer typically wears her hair sans bangs, but she will occasionally switch it up. To complete her Barbie look, Musgraves went blonde for the 2019 Met Gala.
