When is the exact date of Black Friday?

The date of Black Friday changes each year. This year, Black Friday lands on Friday, November 29.

But like many other retail holidays, Black "Friday" really starts a few days, or even earlier at some stores, before the real event. The high levels of anticipation for deals are enough to make retailers launch their sales early.

That's probably better for shoppers anyway. It means they have extra time to shop the countless online sales at their leisure, rather than try to cram all their shopping into one hectic day.

What time does Black Friday start?

Here's when Black Friday starts at various retailers. While a handful of stores start their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day, there are also many that are not open on the holiday

How long do Black Friday sales last?

Again, don't be fooled by the name that suggests it's a single day. Black Friday sales usually last at least a few days, whether they start early or continue on until Cyber Monday.

LG 65-inch C9 OLED 4K TV

LG 65-inch C9 OLED 4K TV, $1,997 (originally $2,796.99) [You save $800], available at Newegg

LG's 2019 C9 OLED is among the very best 65-inch 4K HDR TVs on the market, and it's now available for one of its lowest prices ever. It's on sale at most retailers for $2,099, but Newegg is offering it at the lowest price we've seen, for $1,997.

Thanks to its OLED panel, the TV is capable of superior black levels, contrast, and viewing angles over traditional LCD and QLED displays, making it an ideal pick for home theaters. HDR playback with Dolby Vision support is also included, along with wide color gamut coverage, HDMI 2.1 ports, a voice remote, and support for Google Assistant and Alexa.

Note: Newegg is offering it through a third-party reseller. Best Buy, Amazon, and other major retailers are offering it for approximately $2,099  — Steven Cohen

LG 65-inch B9 OLED 4K TV

LG 65-inch B9 OLED 4K TV, $1,799.99 (originally $2,299.99) [You save $500], available at Best Buy

LG 65-inch B9 OLED 4K TV, $1,796.99, (originally $2,299.99) [You save $503], available at Amazon

LG's most affordable 65-inch OLED TV is now even cheaper thanks to a $500 discount. While it uses a slightly less powerful image processor compared to the C9, the B9 still features the same great OLED panel found on LG's more expensive display models — enabling superior black levels, contrast, and viewing angles over traditional LCD and QLED displays. HDR playback with Dolby Vision support is also included, along with wide color gamut coverage, HDMI 2.1 ports, a voice remote, and support for Google Assistant and Alexa. If you miss the C9 deal at Newegg, definitely try to snag this one.  — Steven Cohen

At a sale price of just under $900, VIZIO's mid-range 2019 65-inch Quantum TV offers some of the best image performance for its class. With quantum dots, 200 zones of full-array local dimming, Dolby Vision support, and up to 1,100 nits of brightness, the set's HDR and color performance rival many competing LCD displays that cost more. Though the TV's SmartCast streaming platform doesn't have as many on-screen apps as some competitors', the display allows customers to cast a larger selection of streaming services to the TV from an Android or iOS device.  — Steven Cohen

Sony 65-inch A8G OLED 4K TV

Sony 65-inch A8G OLED 4K TV, $1,999.99 (originally $2,799.99) [You save $800], available at Best Buy

Sony 65-inch A8G OLED 4K TV, $1,998 (originally $2,799.99) [You save $801.99], available at Amazon

Not content to let LG have all the fun, Sony is also discounting one of its OLED TVs for Black Friday, offering the A8G for $800 off its regular price. While it lacks the more advanced processing found in the company's step-up A9G model, the A8G still features impressive performance with inky black levels, wide color gamut coverage, and Dolby Vision HDR support. The Android TV platform is also integrated for access to a nice selection of apps, and the display uses Sony's unique Acoustic Surface technology to turn the screen itself into a speaker.  — Steven Cohen

Samsung 65-inch Q70R QLED 4K TV

Samsung 65-inch Q70R QLED 4K TV, $1,199.99 (originally $2,199.99) [You save $1,000], available at Samsung

Unlike some other brands, Samsung's TVs don't include Dolby Vision capabilities, but the Q70R does support the competing HDR10+ format. Quantum dot color, voice control via the Bixby voice assistant, and Samsung's Tizen-powered smart TV platform are all integrated.  — Steven Cohen

TCL 75-inch 75R615 Roku 4K TV, $1,199.99 (originally $1,799.99) [You save $400], available at Best Buy

If you're in the market for an extra-large screen, this 75-inch TCL 4K HDR TV offers an incredible value at its current sale price. While it lacks the more advanced quantum dot technology found in the company's newest models, the display still offers wide color support and features 160-zones of full-array local dimming for deep black levels and great HDR performance. The TV's integrated app selection is also comprehensive and responsive thanks to the use of the Roku smart TV platform.  — Steven Cohen

With support for up to 3,000 nits, the Quantum X is one of the brightest 4K displays on the market from any brand, enabling impressive HDR performance. Though gradients aren't as smooth as some competing models, the TV's quantum dot technology enables great wide color gamut capabilities. The SmartCast platform is also integrated, letting customers access select streaming services via the display's on-screen interface and an even larger assortment of apps from a separate Android or iOS mobile device.  — Steven Cohen

What brand of TV is the best?

If you plan on shopping for a TV on Black Friday, you'll likely see an overwhelming number of deals and bundles. To make sure you don't waste money on devices that won't last or don't deliver the quality you're looking for, we recommend that you choose the TV you want in advance, and then figure out when (and where) you'll get the lowest price.

To find the best TV brand for you, you'll first want to figure out your price range: TCL and Insignia sell a number of widely recommended budget TVs, while Samsung, Sony, and LG are better known for high-end devices.

If you plan on using your TV's native interface (rather than connecting a streaming stick), you should also research various brands' operating systems. LG's smart TVs run the company's voice-enabled, highly advanced WebOS, while TCL's TVs run the more bare-bones Roku interface.

You'll also want to consider the resolution you're looking for, the size you want, and the number of ports you need (if you plan on connecting a lot of peripherals). — Monica Chin

Will TV prices drop after Christmas?

Some TVs may see lower prices after Christmas than they do on Black Friday. But keep in mind that Black Friday is the only day of the year when just about every television is certain to see a discount. It's possible that the TV you want will keep its low price through the new year — but this won't be the case for all TVs, so make sure you've done your research if you plan to sit Black Friday out. — Monica Chin

I kept hearing about these 'Bose-killer' headphones that are $70 off on Black Friday, so I finally tried them out — and they're seriously good

sony wh1000 xm3

  • Sony's WH-1000 series of headphones are often said to be comparable to the stalwart of wireless noise-canceling headphones, the Bose QC35 series.
  • The WH-1000 XM3 headphones are very good, and they do a couple of things better than Bose.
  • But there's a potential deal-breaker in the Sony headphones for some people: They can be connected to only one device at a time.
  • For $70 off their $350 price on Black Friday, and considering how good these headphones are, one might forgive the Sonys for their biggest flaw.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

I had heard a lot about these "Bose-killer" headphones from Sony, the $350 WH-1000 XM3, so I wanted to see what all the hype was about.

Bose's QC35 and Sony's WH-1000 series of headphones are among the most common I see in New York. I know the Bose ones are good, so it's no surprise a lot of people use them. And after trying Sony's, I'm not surprised they're popular as well.

The Sonys are undoubtedly one of the closest competitors to Bose's heralded QC35 series of headphones, at least in the $350 range. But they're not exactly the same.

On Black Friday, the Sony WH-1000XM3 have a $280 price tag— $70 off their full $350 price. If there's a time to buy one of the best wireless noise-cancelling headphones, it's now.

Check out how Sony's WH-1000 XM3 headphones stack up against the Bose QC35 II:

SEE ALSO: These strange $400 headphones with a hybrid design have ruined normal headphones for me

Design is up to you. The Bose QC35 II headphones have a classic Bose look that's perhaps a little too classic these days. The Sony XM3s have a sleeker, more modern, minimalist look.

The Bose QC35 II headphones are slightly more comfortable.

They feel lighter on your head and have softer ear and headband pads than the Sonys, and they're more comfortable as a result. The Sonys are still pretty comfortable though.

Anyone and everyone will be happy with the sound produced by both these headphones, but the Bose ones sound better out of the box.

Both headphones deliver great sound that anyone would be happy with, but I had to make a few adjustments with the Sonys to get the sound I wanted.

Out of the box, the Bose headphones sound a little better than the Sonys, at least in the way I like music to sound. I like clarity and brightness, as well as ample bass, and the Bose headphones deliver.

The Sonys sound slightly more muffled out of the box, but you can change the way they sound with the Sony headphones app, and it makes a world of difference.

In Sony's app, I changed the equalizer to the "bright" setting. Indeed, a bright sound is exactly what I like, and the Sonys nailed it.

Noise cancellation: Both are excellent, but Sony edges out a win.

After testing each pair of headphones in planes, subways, noisy New York City, and the office, I've found that both do a fantastic job of canceling outside noise, but the Sonys do have a slight edge.

Still, both headphones shocked me when it comes to just how much sound they block out. When I took either pair off my ears in the New York streets or subway, I wondered how I ever managed to stay sane without them.

Other little bits and pieces.

The Sonys use USB-C for charging, whereas the Bose headphones use the ancient micro-USB.

I'm happier to see USB-C, because that's simply where tech is going. More and more of the devices I own use USB-C, meaning I'm more likely to have a USB-C cable lying around in my bag or on my desk for charging the Sonys. For the Bose headphones, I'd have to bring out a micro-USB cable, which at this stage would serve to charge only them.

Micro-USB is slowly being phased out, and it's a shame that the QC35 II headphones are yet another relatively recent accessory that will keep you with a foot in the past.

As for battery life, Bose claims its headphones get 20 hours, and Sony claims 30 hours. I didn't notice much of a difference between the two — I just charged them when I needed to, and I never felt as if I was constantly charging either.

The controls on each are OK. The Bose ones use buttons and button combinations to control your music, while the Sonys use taps and swipes on the exterior ear cups. I found the taps and swipes slightly more intuitive, but it's still not ideal. Few headphone makers — if any — have properly figured out built-in music controls.

Both headphones come with voice assistants, like Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa. But this is a non-topic, in my opinion. I've only ever used smart assistants on headphones for quick testing, never finding a good use for them. Maybe you'll find a good use for them. Maybe you won't. At least voice assistants don't take away from the headphones.

There's one thing the Bose headphones can do that the Sonys don't, and it could be a deal-breaker for some.

You can connect the Bose headphones to two devices at the same time with Bluetooth, which was great for seamlessly switching between the connection with my phone and the connection with my computer.

Shockingly, the Sonys don't let you do that — they can be connected to only one device at a time. It was more of a hassle to switch between devices than it was with the Bose headphones.

So which pair of headphones should you get if you're looking for great sound quality, noise cancellation, and functionality?

This is a tough one.

On the one hand, the Bose headphones sound great out of the box. On the other hand, the Sonys have slightly better noise cancellation, and you can tweak the sound to your liking in the Sony headphones app, your audio-streaming app, or your phone's sound-equalizer settings.

The major thing for me is seamlessly switching between at least two devices, and that's why the Bose headphones stake their claim over my ears. For this one reason, I'd recommend the Bose QC35 II over the Sonys to anyone who wants to use their Bluetooth headphones with more than one device.

That said, if you're confident you'll use Bluetooth headphones with only your smartphone or your computer, the Sonys will make you happy.

Inside Trump's 3.5-hour top-secret Thanksgiving trip to visit US troops in Afghanistan

President Donald Trump speaks to the troops during a surprise Thanksgiving day visit at Bagram Air Field, on November 28, 2019 in Afghanistan.

President Donald Trump ate turkey with US troops in Afghanistan for Thanksgiving.

Trump visited Afghanistan on Thursday for the first time. For security purposes, it was a top-secret trip that involved decoy planes, a false announcement from the White House about his whereabouts, and someone continuing to tweet from his personal Twitter account while he was en route to avoid raising suspicions.

He was in Afghanistan for three and a half hours. He made a speech to 1,500 US troops, served and ate turkey with soldiers, posed for photos, and met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

Here's what the clandestine trip was like.

DON'T MISS: Trump's visit to Afghanistan was so secret the White House sent generic Thanksgiving tweets from his account to avoid questions about why he didn't post for 13 hours

On Wednesday morning, November 27, President Donald Trump played a round of golf at Mar-a-Lago, the private resort he owns in Florida. The White House announced he would be spending the night in Florida, too, but at 7 p.m., he secretly boarded Air Force One.

More than 12 journalists joined Trump for his trip, picked up from the roof of a public parking garage. They weren't told where they were going until just before they landed. It was completely under wraps for security purposes.

White House staff even continued to send tweets from Trump's personal Twitter account, because people had become suspicious last year when it was inactive during his visit US troops in Iraq the day after Christmas.

The president's blue-and-white 747 was left outside at Palm Beach International Airport, to act as a decoy. According to Politico, only a small circle of aides planned the trip had been for weeks to ensure no one knew about it.

Trump took the backup 747 for the 13-hour flight. Technically, any plane the president is on is known as Air Force One.

White House press secretary Stephanie Graham said the trip was "truly about thanksgiving and supporting the troops," and not about securing peace with the Taliban. But according to The New York Times, the trip was political. Trump was looking for a foreign policy win, after he called off talks with the Taliban in September.

The plane landed at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan at 8.33 p.m., according to Politico. The shades were drawn and the lights were off. US troops have been stationed in Afghanistan since 2001, shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks, but this was Trump's first visit to the country. He was met by US Army General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Security was high at the main base for US troops north of Kabul. Trump was transported by a 15-vehicle motorcade. Soldiers stood on the back of vehicles armed with automatic weapons.

Troops took the chance to get photos of the commander in chief.

And selfies with him.

They lined up their patches and coins for Trump to inspect.

Trump took to the stage to speak to troops about US victories over Al Qaeda and the Islamic State. The New York Times said the visit allowed Trump to stand in front of a supportive military backdrop. It was a helpful image, after he recently intervened in several war crimes cases, which haven't gone down smoothly in the Pentagon.

Source: The New York Times

About 1,500 troops watched him speak. He told them he wanted to reduce troops in Afghanistan from about 13,000 to 8,600. He also said the Afghanistan war would not be decided on the battlefield but by people from Afghanistan and with a political solution.

Sources: Business Insider, The New York Times, Reuters, Politico

But he said US troops would stay on if necessary. "We're going to stay until such time as we have a deal or we have total victory. And they want to make a deal very badly." During his remarks, he did not mention any of his domestic issues, including the impeachment hearing.

Sources: Reuters, Politico

He also sat down for a discussion with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. During their conversation, he said that he had reopened peace talks with the Taliban. "The Taliban wants to make a deal, and we're meeting with them," Trump said.

On Twitter afterwards, Ghani said, "Both sides underscored that if the Taliban are sincere in their commitment to reaching a peace deal, they must accept a ceasefire." The ceasefire has been a demand from the Afghan government for a long time, but there's no evidence that the Taliban has agreed to one.

Trump had time to serve turkey and mashed potatoes to the troops.

And he sat down to eat the meal with them, too.

But he didn't get to enjoy all of it. He was all set to go with a "gorgeous plate of turkey," but General Mark Milley came over and said they should get some photos. "I never got to my turkey. It's the first time at Thanksgiving that I've never had anything called turkey," Trump said.

Source: Politico

There was a little time to chat. He told soldiers, "What a great job you do. It's an honor to be here."

All in all, Trump was in Afghanistan for about 3.5 hours. He returned to Mar-a-Lago on Friday around 7:30 a.m.

brainteasers of 2019

  • Brainteasers ranging from tough math equations to illustrations containing hidden objects went viral this year.
  • Hungarian artist Gergely Dudás creates brainteasers that challenge people to find small details.
  • Confusion over the order of operations in a viral math problem caused a Twitter controversy.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Everyone loves a good brainteaser. From math equations that stumped the internet to illustrations with hidden objects, people enjoyed taking on viral challenges in 2019.

Here are our favorite brainteasers of the year.

Can you tell which giraffe doesn't have a twin with matching spots?

In this brainteaser by Gergely Dudás, there are 19 giraffes — nine pairs with identical spots and one outlier with different spots. Can you tell which one doesn't match?

This giraffe is the odd one out.

The second giraffe from the right's pattern of spots is unmatched by any of the other giraffes.

For Valentine's Day 2019, Dudás hid a heart in this image. Can you find it?

If you're stuck, here's a hint: It's near the owls.

The tiny heart is sandwiched between four flowers.

Right above the cuddly owls, there's a heart concealed between four flowers.

This equation has 2 wildly different answers depending on what you learned in school, and the internet was divided.

Twitter user @pjmdoll shared a math problem in July that garnered over 20,000 replies with people arguing about the correct answer.

Here's how to solve 8 ÷ 2(2 + 2) = ?

First, add the numbers in the parentheses.

8 ÷ 2(4) = ?

Then, do the multiplication and division from left to right.

8 ÷ 2(4) = 4(4) = 16.

The confusion was caused by the difference between modern and historic interpretations of the order of operations, known as PEMDAS. Read the complete explanation here.

It took people an average of 11 seconds to find the gift hidden in these bows. Can you beat that time?

The illustrated brainteaser shows dozens of multi-colored bows. One is attached to a wrapped present, but it's hard to tell where the box is.

The gift is connected to a red bow.

The gift box is near the bottom left corner, camouflaged by the multi-colored bows.

Can you find the unlocked padlock in under nine seconds?

According to The Smartcard Store, nine seconds is the record for finding the unlocked padlock.

The unlocked padlock is near the bottom left-hand corner of the image.

Did you find it in under nine seconds?

In another illustration, Dudás hid a penguin among a flock of toucans.

Can you spot the penguin?

The penguin is on the right side of the image.

The penguin has a grey face with a white belly, while the surrounding toucans have white faces and grey bodies.

95% of people can't spot the cocktail umbrella in this photo in under a minute. Can you?

GalaBingo.com shared this summer-themed brainteaser in honor of the Fourth of July in 2019.

The paper cocktail umbrella blends in with the other beach umbrellas, but something about it is different.

The cocktail umbrella is crinkly with more prominent sections than the other umbrellas.

For Easter, Dudás challenged people to find the baby chicken among rabbits.

There's a small baby chicken hidden among Easter eggs and rabbits.

The chick seems like just another Easter egg, but you can see its face if you look closely.

It's hiding behind the ear of a rabbit in the bottom left corner.

There's a mouse concealed inside this field of autumnal mushrooms. Where is it?

Here's a hint: It's hiding behind a mushroom with an orange cap.

The mouse is hard to spot, but it's there.

The mouse is on the left side of the image, peering out from behind an orange mushroom.

For Halloween 2019, Dudás hid a cat among bats in this brainteaser. Can you find the cat?

Want a hint? It's the only creature without wings.

It's hiding in the bottom left corner.

The cat blends right in with the bats.

The average person takes 15 seconds to find the hidden bat in this brainteaser. Can you beat that time?

Burton Roofing, a construction supplier in the UK, challenged people to find a hidden bat in an image filled with building tools.

This tricky brainteaser actually has the bat sleeping upside down, making it even harder to locate.

This Halloween brainteaser was a tough one.

Can you find the mouse hidden among squirrels in Dudás' brainteaser?

In this recent challenge, Dudás hid a mouse somewhere among a crowd of squirrels. Can you pick it out?

It's a difficult one, but the mouse is hidden near the top right corner.

Its round ears and thin tail give it away.

There are 12 pairs of rabbits with matching patterns here — but one rabbit doesn't have a twin. Can you find the odd one out?

Pay special attention to the patterns on their on their ears, faces, and bellies.

No other rabbit has a darker yellow pattern on both of its ears and around its nose.

How easily did you find it?

Our 7 best bets for Week 14 of the college football season

  • College football fans are gearing up for rivalry weekend this Friday and Saturady, pitting teams across the country against their greatest enemies.
  • Last weekend, our picks went 5-2 against the spread, with Penn State, Arkansas, and Arizona State all coming through to cover as double-digit underdogs.
  • This week we're swerving the other way, backing some heavy favorites to win their rivalry games by wide margins.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

We made a solid profit during Week 13 of the college football season.

Thanks to Penn State, Arkansas, and Arizona State all covering as big underdogs, our picks went an impressive 5-2 against the spread last weekend.

This week, we're celebrating rivalry week by backing some heavy favorites to cover big numbers against their sworn enemies.

Take a look below for our best bets of the Week 14 college football slate (* indicates home team).

LAST WEEK: 5-2
OVERALL: 50-38-3

Oklahoma (-13) over Oklahoma State*

Oklahoma has burnt me more than once this year as heavy favorites, but in Bedlam this year against Oklahoma State, I think the Sooners have the goods to cruise to victory.

Oklahoma still has an outside shot at sneaking into the playoff if other games across the country fall their way, but they have to take care of business themselves first. In a series that dates back more than 100 years that the Sooners hold an 88-17-7 record, I trust them to do just that.

Penn State* (-40) over Rutgers

Rutgers went a miserable 3-8 against the spread this year, with some bettors cashing in against them week after week. I was a bit more hesitant to fade the Scarlet Knights at big numbers, but now that we've reached our last chance of the season to bet against them, I can't resist.

Penn State's defense should swallow Rutgers whole, and the Nittany Lions will want to put on a show for the home crowd and possibly run up the score in a game that should allow for some seniors to get both playing time and touchdowns.

Ohio State (-9) over Michigan*

Despite being possibly the biggest rivalry in college football, Michigan-Ohio State has been a pretty lopsided affair in recent years. Known simply as "The Game," the Buckeyes have not lost since 2011, and four of their past five victories have come by double digits.

This is likely the best Ohio State team that has ever rolled into The Big House, and as sweet as an upset would be, I don't think Michigan has the horses to keep pace.

Oregon* (-19.5) over Oregon State

Oregon may have missed out on the college football playoff with their loss to Arizona State last week. However, the Ducks can still secure a likely spot in the Rose Bowl as long as they win on Saturday, and they've made a habit of beating up on Oregon State in recent years at the game known as "Civil War."

In their past two meetings, Oregon has outscored Oregon State a combined 124-25, and I see no reason for that trend not to continue this year.

Georgia (-28) over Georgia Tech*

Motivation is a dangerous thing to play with in rivalry games — a matchup called "Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate" explains itself in that regard.

Still, the Bulldogs have everything to play for in this game, while the Yellow Jackets have known they were in the midst of a rebuilding year. I believe these games tend to stay close throughout or be settled in a jiffy, and this weekend I'm leaning the latter.

Miami (-9) over Duke*

Miami got embarrassed last weekend by FIU and now needs one more win to secure a winning record on the season. Duke has been in a free-fall in recent weeks, having lost five straight games, four of which came by double digits.

This feels like a spot where the Hurricanes take out their frustrations on a Duke team that can do little to stop them.

LSU* (-17) over Texas A&M

Last year LSU lost a jaw-dropping seven-overtime game to Texas A&M, 74-72. The Tigers have not lost since, and as one of the best teams in the country this year, this is the perfect spot for Joe Burrow and company to get their revenge.

Now check out our best bets for Week 13 of the NFL season...

The life and rise of Jony Ive, the legendary Apple designer who's now leaving to strike out on his own

Jony Ive

After the late Steve Jobs, no one has had more influence on Apple than the company's longtime design chief Jony Ive.

That made it all the more surprising when Apple announced in June that Ive was leaving the company at some point this year. Ive is departing Apple to launch his own independent design company, LoveFrom, with his former employer as one of its primary clients.

Ive has worked at Apple for 27 years. In that time, he received countless awards and accolades for his ingenuity and commitment to Apple's minimalist design aesthetic. However, his name disappeared from Apple's website in November, potentially signaling the Ive's official departure from the company.

Ive has become quite famous in his prolific career. The knighted London native is frequently spotted at clubs and lives in San Francisco, not terribly far from Apple's Cupertino headquarters. Ive's success at Apple has made him a household name and catapulted him into conversations about pop culture.

Here's what you need to know about Jony Ive, the famed Apple designer:

US-China trade talks are at a critical juncture. Here's a timeline of everything that's happened so far.

Trump Xi

  • The Trump administration started a trade dispute with China in early 2018, in an attempt to address practices it said put US companies at a disadvantage.
  • The two sides have since slapped steep tariffs on thousands of products and threatened further escalations, with no clear end in sight.
  • Here's a timeline of the US-China trade war so far.

March 1, 2018: President Donald Trump announces tariffs on all imports of steel and aluminum, including metals from China.

March 22, 2018: Trump announces plans to impose 25% tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods. China announces tariffs in retaliation to the steel and aluminum duties and promises a response to the latest US announcement.

April 3, 2018: US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer announces a list of Chinese goods subject to the tariffs. There is a mandatory 60-day comment period for industries to ask for exemptions from the tariffs.

April 4, 2018: China rolls out a list of more than 100 US goods worth roughly $50 billion that are subject to retaliatory tariffs.

May 21, 2018: After a meeting, the two countries announce the outline of a trade deal to avoid the tariffs.

May 29, 2018: The White House announces that the tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods will move forward, with the final list of goods to be released on June 15. The move appears to wreck the nascent trade deal.

June 15, 2018: Trump rolls out the final list of goods subject to new tariffs. Chinese imports worth $34 billion would be subject to the new 25% tariff rate as of July 6, with another $16 billion worth of imports subject to the tariff at a later date. China retaliates with an equivalent set of tariffs.

June 18, 2018: Trump threatens 10% tariffs on another $200 billion worth of Chinese goods.

July 6, 2018: The first tranche of tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods takes effect; China responds in kind.

July 10, 2018: The US releases an initial list of an additional $200 billion worth of Chinese goods that could be subject to 10% tariffs.

July 24, 2018: The Trump administration announces a $12 billion bailout package for farmers hurt by retaliatory duties on agricultural products, set to begin in September.

August 1, 2018: Washington more than doubles the value of its tariff threats against Beijing, announcing plans to increase the size of proposed duties on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25% from 10%.

August 3, 2018: China says it will impose tariffs at various rates on another $60 billion worth of US goods if Trump moves forward with his latest threat.

August 7, 2018: The US announces that the second tranche of tariffs, which would hit $16 billion worth of Chinese goods, will take effect August 23.

August 23, 2018: The US imposes tariffs on another $16 billion worth of Chinese goods, and Beijing responds with tariffs on $16 billion worth of US goods.

September 7, 2018: Trump says the tranche of tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods is coming "soon" and threatens to impose tariffs on another $267 billion worth of Chinese goods.

September 17, 2018: The US imposes tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, and the tariff rate is scheduled to increase to 25% from 10% on January 1.

December 1, 2018: Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping sit down at the G20 summit in Argentina, where the two leaders hash out a trade truce, delaying the escalation of US tariffs until March 1.

December 4, 2018: Despite the truce, Trump tweets that he is still a "Tariff Man" and says a deal will get done only if it is in the best interest of the US.

February 24, 2019: After a series of negotiations, Trump announces that US tariffs will not increase on March 1. He delays the increase indefinitely.

April 1, 2019: Violent clashes between authorities and pro-democracy protesters break out in Hong Kong, a semiautonomous Chinese territory. The government blames US influence for the demonstrations, but Trump maintains a softer tone with Xi.

May 5, 2019: After apparent progress in talks, the US accuses China of reneging on past trade commitments. Trump threatens to raise tariff rates and place duties on another $300 billion worth of Chinese goods.

May 10, 2019: Trump follows through with those threats, increasing import taxes to 25% from 10% on about $200 billion worth of products from China. Negotiations stall, and the US gives China a three-to-four-week deadline for a deal, according to Bloomberg.

May 13, 2019: China retaliates against the US by announcing it will raise tariff rates on $60 billion worth of American products on June 1.

May 15, 2019: Trump signs an executive order banning American companies from using telecommunications gear from foreign adversaries that officials declared as a threat to national security. He also adds Huawei and dozens of other Chinese companies to the US's "Entity List."

May 21, 2019: Xi calls on China to begin a new "long march," which is seen by some as a signal that the country is gearing up for a prolonged standoff with the US.

May 22, 2019: Xi visits one of the largest suppliers of rare-earth elements in China. The move is widely seen as a reminder of the leverage China holds when it comes to minerals the US relies on for a variety of goods, from jet fuel to wind turbines.

May 23, 2019: Trump rolls out a $16 billion bailout program for farmers who have been hurt by China's retaliatory tariffs on agricultural products.

June 2, 2019: China releases a policy paper blaming the US for stalled trade negotiations, drawing objections from the US Trade Representative.

June 3, 2019: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo calls on the Chinese government to publicly acknowledge the anniversary of the deadly crackdown on the protests at Tiananmen Square in 1989.

June 4, 2019: A Foreign Ministry spokesman condemns Pompeo in a statement, saying his statement amounted to interference in its internal affairs. The Chinese government issues travel warnings for the US, saying its citizens had been subject to what it called harassment by American law enforcement.

June 10, 2019: Trump says that tariffs on $300 billion worth of Chinese products will take effect "immediately" if progress isn't made at an anticipated meeting with Xi in Japan at the end of the month.

June 17, 2019: Hundreds of company representatives travel to Washington to testify against planned tariff escalations before the US Trade Representative. Throughout seven days of hearings, many warn that taxing all imports from China would increase costs and threaten US jobs.

June 17, 2019: Trump says he has spoken with Xi by phone in recent days. He confirms that the two leaders will sit down at G20 and adds that trade delegations will be in contact before then.

June 25, 2019: Bloomberg reports that the US is preparing to stall additional tariffs on China at the Trump-Xi meeting.

June 27, 2019: The Wall Street Journal reports that Xi plans to head to his meeting with Trump armed with conditions for de-escalation, including lifting tariffs and a ban on Huawei. The Trump administration doubles down on previous threats, saying escalation is still on the table.

June 29, 2019: Trump and Xi reach a trade-war ceasefire on the sidelines of G20, delaying planned tariffs on roughly $300 billion worth of Chinese products. The two sides agree to restart negotiations that stalled in May.

July 3, 2019: Trump accuses other countries, including China, of currency manipulation and suggests the US should weaken the dollar to compete.

July 9, 2019: Weeks after blacklisting Huawei, the Commerce Department says it will consider issuing licenses to companies who do business with the Chinese telecommunications giant.

July 11, 2019: Trump accuses China of reneging on a past commitment to purchase more American agricultural products.

July 29, 2019: Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin resume trade talks with their Chinese counterparts in Shanghai.

July 31, 2019: Those negotiations end, with the next round expected in September. Both sides portray the discussions as constructive, but there are few signs of concrete progress.

August 1, 2019: In a reversal, Trump abruptly announces the US will move forward with tariffs on virtually all remaining imports from China.

August 2, 2019: China warns it will retaliate with "the necessary countermeasures" if Trump follows through with his latest tariff threats, which the country says violate an agreement reached at G20.

August 5, 2019: The US Treasury Department labels China as a currency manipulator after the country allows the yuan to breach the psychologically key level of seven against the dollar. China says it will halt purchases of American agricultural products.

August 9, 2019: Trump threatens again that the US will cut ties with Huawei. The Commerce Department says it will hold off on making a decision on licenses to do business with the telecommunications giant.

August 13, 2019: The US delays a portion of tariffs on China, set to take effect September 1, until December 15. The administration says the move was meant to avoid disruptions to the holiday shopping season in the US, a rare acknowledgement that tariffs can raise prices.

August 19, 2019: The Commerce Department says it will grant a temporary reprieve to Huawei, giving companies an extra 90 days to find an alternative to the telecommunications giant.

August 23, 2019: China prepares retaliatory tariffs on $75 billion worth of US products and says it will reinstate duties on cars. The escalations are set to go into place the same dates as on the US side.

Trump vows to hit back against those countermeasures, announcing the US will raise the tariff rates on Chinese products by about 5%. Financial markets tumble sharply as the president also orders private US companies to leave China, sowing confusion even though the command carries no legislative weight.

August 25, 2019: Trump suggests to reporters that he's having "second thoughts" on trade escalations. The White House clarifies that statement hours later, saying the president only regrets not raising tariffs on China further.

August 26, 2019: Trump moves to cast a positive light on trade negotiations as financial markets open. He says Chinese officials called over the weekend and want to make a deal but declines to elaborate. China disputes that claim.

August 29, 2019: Trump tells Fox News that his trade team is talking with China "at a different level." The White House says both sides remain in communication, but doesn't elaborate.

August 30, 2019:The Washington Post reports that the Trump administration is looking into a plan to cut taxes by the amount raised in Chinese tariffs, an apparent admission that the cost of the trade wars has fallen on Americans.

Trump blames companies at home for expressing concerns about tariffs, claiming without evidence that they only want to shift blame away from internal issues.

September 1, 2019: The Trump administration follows through with plans to enact tariffs on roughly $112 billion worth of Chinese imports, including clothing and household staples. China retaliates with tariffs on thousands of American products including cars.

September 4, 2019: Trump says the Dow Jones Industrial Average would be "10,000 points higher" if he hadn't started a trade dispute with China. The comment offers a rare acknowledgement that investors are nervous about his policies.

September 11, 2019: China exempts 16 American product types from tariffs, including animal feed ingredients and cancer drugs. But the move is seen as more of an effort to shield Chinese businesses and consumers than as a concession to the US.

September 19, 2019: Deputy-level trade officials from the two sides meet in Washington to lay the framework for higher-level negotiations.

September 20, 2019: The US exempts roughly 400 Chinese products from tariffs, ranging from plastic straws to pet supplies, in the latest sign that the trade dispute is taking a toll on American companies.

China cancels planned visits to American farms in the Midwest, without offering any official reasoning.

September 21, 2019: USTR announces it "looks forward to welcoming a delegation from China for principal-level meetings in October." But no specific dates are given.

October 7, 2019: The US adds 28 technology companies in China to an export blacklist late Monday over alleged human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang hints at future retaliation.

October 10, 2019: Trump, Lighthizer and Mnuchin host a 13th round of economic negotiations in Washington with a delegation led by Chinese Vice Premier Liu He. Behind closed doors, the White House continues to weigh potential new economic penalties against China.

October 11, 2019: The US announces a so-called phase-one trade agreement with China, which is said to involve intellectual property rules, financial market access and agricultural purchases. Trump holds off on scheduled escalations that would have raised tariff rates on thousands of Chinese products to as high as 30%.

October 29, 2019: China says it will take steps to ease foreign investment restrictions and technology rules. But key terms of the interim trade agreement, which is still not put to paper, remain elusive.

October 31, 2019: Chile says it will no longer host a pair of global summits where Trump and Xi had originally planned to sign the announced trade agreement. The cancellation, attributed to a recent surge of unrest and protests in the country, raises concerns about the fate of negotiations.

November 12, 2019: Trump says the first part of a deal with China could be finalized "soon" but emphasizes that escalations against China would ensue if not.

"If we don't make a deal, we're going to substantially raise those tariffs," the president says.

November 15, 2019: The two sides continue to negotiate the terms of the phase-one trade agreement announced a month earlier. But multiple White House advisers say Trump isn't ready to sign anything yet.

November 21, 2019: The Wall Street Journal reports that Chinese Vice Premier Liu He has invited US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to an in-person meeting. The US side does not indicate whether it will attend.

November 25, 2019: China rolls out plans to bolster its rules on patents, copyrights and trademarks. In an official document, the State Council and the Central Committee of the Communist Party say they will seek higher compensation for rights infringements and stricter enforcement mechanisms.

November 27, 2019: Trump signs bipartisan legislation that outlined support for pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong. The move angers officials in Beijing, who warn of potential retaliation, and casts uncertainty over trade talks.

November 29, 2019: The US announces it will shield dozens of products from tariffs. The new exclusions are seen as a way to mitigate domestic concerns ahead of the 2020 elections.

Updated on 11/29/19 at 12:55 p.m.

When it comes to Black Friday savings, large retailers tend to dominate the conversation. This year, don't forget about the little guys. We love startups for their innovative ideas and problem-solving products, whether they're changing the way we eat, sleep, or get dressed. And, while they may not be publicized as much as their larger counterparts, plenty of these brands are offering great deals this Black Friday.

We've created a big list of the best Black Friday deals from all of our favorite startups. Whether you're looking to try a cool new product yourself or searching for a unique holiday gift for someone else, these should help. dji osmo pocket lifestyle

  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday have traditionally been devoid of great camera deals, but 2019 proves to be different.
  • Deals are available on both older and newer products, from brands like Canon, Sony, DJI, GoPro, Olympus, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Adobe, Insta360, and more.
  • Some of these deals have already started, and while some will end around Cyber Monday, many won't expire until well into December.
  • You can check out the rest of our Black Friday and Cyber Monday coverage on Insider Picks.

Updated 11/29/2019 at 1 p.m.

During previous Black Fridays, there weren't many deals on cameras. Sure, you'll find plenty of deals on accessories and lesser-known brands, but the cameras on sale tend to be on really old or end-of-life products.

This year is different: We're seeing a lot of good deals on many of our favorite photo and video gear, and if you're shopping for a new camera, lens, drone, etc., Black Friday and Cyber Monday are worth taking a look.

The deals listed here are all active for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but we expect to add more. The good news, too, is that a lot of these deals are sticking around until the end of the year, so you have time.

We will continue to update this list — adding new ones and removing those that have expired, so be sure to check back.

10 best Black Friday camera deals in 2019:

Sony Black Friday deals

Sony's deals are available from now until December 1.

Sony makes some of the best full-frame mirrorless cameras, including the terrific A7 III. You can get $200 off this model, either as a body-only option ($1,799) or bundled with a lens ($. With a 24.2-megapixel full-frame (35mm) sensor, the A7 III is one of Sony's most advanced and versatile cameras yet. It has a five-axis image stabilization system for rock-steady photos and videos, speedy performance, and advanced tech, like Sony's effective Eye AF. Like many Sony A7 cameras, the A7 III is a great 4K video camera too.

The A7 II is also getting a discount. After all rebates, you can get the A7 II for as low as $899.99. While it's a much older camera (circa 2015) and doesn't have the latest tech, the A7 II is still a highly lauded model that delivers great photos and 4K videos, and it has Sony's proven five-axis stabilization. If you've been looking to get into full-frame photography and 4K videography but you're on a budget, this is a solid option. For $100 more, you can get the A7 II with a 28-70mm zoom lens.

If you're after megapixels, Sony's 42-megapixel A7R II and A7R III full-frame cameras are also discounted. You can get the A7R II with a kit lens for less than $1,500.

Sony is also bringing the price of the compact A6000 down to $399.99 (body only). While this is a very good cropped-sensor (APS-C) camera, note that it's several years old. However, Sony is offering the A6000 as a two-lens bundle for $599, which is worth considering if you are buying a Sony camera for the first time and plan to upgrade the body later. Sony's A6500 is also discounted ($999.99, body only), which is a more advanced model with newer tech, but if you're spending this much, we think you should consider going full-frame with the A7 II and 28-70mm lens unless you desire a compact, travel-friendly camera.

The deals aren't just on older cameras. There are savings on the new A7R IV and A9 II ($100 off), but they aren't as significant or hard to find. Sony's Black Friday/Cyber Monday promotion covers its mirrorless cameras, point-and-shoot cameras (Cyber-shot), action cameras, camcorders (Handycam), and accessories. Sony cameras generally don't go on sale, and while the deals are mainly for older models, nearly all of Sony's cameras are very good products.

You can see the full list of discounts here. Products are available at Sony authorized retailers, such as B&H and Adorama, as well as Best Buy, although we noticed B&H and Adorama are including some great accessories on top of the discount (make sure you click on the correct links that take you to the bundles). You may also notice B&H and Adorama knocking an extra $1 off. Unless you live in the New York City area, Best Buy's nationwide stores offer easier returns and may even price match should you find a cheaper deal (although Best Buy won't price match Black Friday deals). Here are the great products with notable savings that are worth considering:

  • Get the Sony A7 II full-frame mirrorless camera with 28-70mm kit zoom lens for approximately $999.99 (regularly $1,599.99) from Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $600]. Note that B&H is including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Sony A7 III full-frame mirrorless camera with 28-70mm kit zoom lens for approximately $1,999.99 (regularly $2,199) from Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $200]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Sony A7R II full-frame mirrorless camera with 28-70mm kit zoom lens for approximately $1,499.99 (regularly $1,999.99) from B&H and Adorama [You save $500]
  • Get the Sony A7R III full-frame mirrorless camera for approximately $2,499.99 (regularly $2,799.99) from Best Buy, B&H, and Adorama [You save $300]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Sony A9 full-frame mirrorless camera for approximately $3,499.99 (regularly $3,999.99, body only) from Best Buy, B&H, and Adorama [You save $500]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Sony A6000 APS-C mirrorless camera with 16-50mm and 55-210mm kit lenses for approximately $599.99 (regularly $999.99) from Best Buy, B&H, and Adorama [You save $400]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III large-sensor point-and-shoot camera for approximately $599.99 (regularly $749.99) from Best Buy, B&H, and Adorama [You save $150]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.

GoPro Black Friday deal

GoPro deal runs from now to December 2.

The GoPro Hero8 Black is not only the best action camera we've ever used, but it's one of the best cameras, period. It has the ability to shoot in a variety of video resolutions — up to 4K at 60 frames per second — and it has one of the best image stabilization systems in a camera.

The Hero8 Black has been redesigned to be easier to use, thanks to an improved user interface that brings many of the settings to the forefront. Our favorite mode is TimeWarp for shooting time-lapse videos, but the Hero8 Black captures great photos and videos in general. The body has also been redesigned: It no longer needs a cage for attaching accessories to it.

For Black Friday, GoPro is discounting the Hero8 Black Bundle by $100. Besides the camera, you can the Head Strap accessory (a useful item for attaching the camera on your head), the Shorty grip that doubles as a mini-tripod, a 32GB microSD card, and an extra battery.

Olympus Black Friday deals

Olympus' deals run from now to December 3.

From its rugged point-and-shoots to the stylish PEN and advanced OM-D series, Olympus is offering discounts on its cameras and lenses — by as much as $500 when buying through Olympus' website.

The sale applies to the newest flagship model, too: the OM-D E-M1X. Olympus makes high-quality mirrorless cameras that are fast and durable, like the E-M1X, E-M1 Mark II, and E-M5 Mark III. Olympus uses the Micro Four Thirds sensor, which is smaller than the APS-C sensor used in many DSLR and mirrorless cameras. However, the small sensor hasn't kept Olympus from competing with larger-sensor cameras in both professional photography and videography. And part of Olympus cameras' strength is in the quality optics.

For casual users, Olympus is discounting the PEN E-PL9 by $150 to $400, depending on the bundle. This camera uses the same lenses as the OM-D series, but it's more of a step-up camera for users who are more comfortable with a smartphone. For something more advanced but still compact, we like the OM-D E-M10 Mark III.

Olympus makes one of the best rugged point-and-shoot cameras, the Tough TG-6. You can get $100 off this model, but the bigger deal is for the Tough TG-Tracker, a similar camera that's designed for shooting video. The TG-Tracker is $150 off.

For lenses, you'll find savings on both Olympus M.Zuiko Pro and M.Zuiko lenses. They include the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO ($200 off), M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm F2.8 Macro ($150 off), and M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F1.8 ($150 off). Expect to see discounts of $50 to $200 off.

You'll also find discounts on Olympus accessories like voice recorders and flashes.

The deals are available through Olympus' website, B&H, Adorama, and other authorized Olympus resellers from November 27 to December 3. For more info, check out Olympus' Black Friday page. Note that B&H and Adorama may throw in extra accessories to sweeten the deal. Here is a selection of deals worth checking out:

DJI Black Friday deals

DJI's deals run from now until December 4.

DJI is offering discounts on many of our favorite DJI products, including the Osmo Action Camera, Osmo Pocket Camera, the Mavic 2 Pro Drone.

With front and back screens, great image stabilization, a rugged exterior, voice controls, and the ability to capture 12-megapixel photos and 4K videos at 60 frames per second (30 fps with high-dynamic-range), the Osmo Action is one of the better action cameras you can buy. You can save $100.

The Osmo Pocket is another camera we've had fun using. Unlike most action cams that rely on software for image stabilization, this camera has a small, physical gimbal. That means your videos aren't cropped in, and it is terrific for shooting perfect panoramas. Like the Osmo Action, it can capture 4K at 60 fps and 12-megapixel photos. Connect it to a smartphone and you have a nice rig for shooting movies. You can save $90.

DJI made a name for itself as the top maker of drones, and the Mavic 2 Pro is a great one. It's easy to fly and it has great camera specs. It uses a Hasselblad-designed camera with a 1-inch sensor, which is much larger than the 1/2.3-inch that's normally used in small cameras. It can capture 4K at 30 fps or 20-megapixel photos. It can fly for 31 minutes on a single battery charge, and what we love about DJI's drones is the obstacle avoidance tech. It usually sells for $1,720, but you can get it for $350 off.

Unfortunately, there isn't a deal on the new Mavic Mini, a compact drone that you can legally fly almost anywhere. There also isn't a big discount ($20 off) on our favorite smartphone gimbal, the Osmo Mobile 3, but this product is already affordable, to begin with (this sale price is not yet active).

Check out these DJI discounts.

  • Get the DJI Mavic 2 Pro Drone for approximately $1,379 (regularly $1,729) from DJI, Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $350]. Note that Adorama is including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the DJI Osmo Action Camera for approximately $279 (regularly $379) from DJI, Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $100]. Note that Adorama is including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the DJI Osmo Pocket Camera for approximately $309 (regularly $399) from DJI, Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $90]. Note that Adorama is including additional useful accessories.

Canon Black Friday deals

Canon's deals run from now until January 4, 2020.

Whether you are shopping for a DSLR or mirrorless camera, Canon has several deals, including some on brand new models, like the EOS 90D, EOS RP, EOS M200, and EOS M6 Mark II.

The EOS 90D is the successor to the EOS 80D, one of the best DSLRs in recent years. With a new 32.5-megapixel APS-C sensor (the highest megapixel count in an APS-C sensor) and the latest Canon image processor, the 90D continues the 80D's prowess in performance and image quality. The camera can also shoot uncropped 4K videos at 30p resolution. You can save $150 on an EOS 90D with an 18-135mm kit lens.

If you prefer a mirrorless camera, you can get the EOS RP (body only), for $999 — a $300 savings. Released in early 2019, the EOS RP is the smallest, lightest, and most affordable model in Canon's full-frame mirrorless lineup. It takes great images, but it's better at photos than videos.

For something more compact, there's the EOS M6 Mark II, a new APS-C mirrorless camera that's $100 off and includes a 15-45mm kit lens and electronic viewfinder. The M6 Mark II is somewhat of a mirrorless equivalent to the 90D: It shares the same 32.5-megapixel APS-C sensor and Digic 8 image processor and can shoot 4K at 30p. Overall, like the 90D, this is a strong option.

There are also deals on some older but still great cameras, like the EOS 5D Mark IV ($600 off, body only), EOS Rebel T7 ($150 off, with two kit lenses), EOS R ($700 off, with 24-105mm kit lens), and PowerShot G9 X Mark II ($80 off).

For all deals, which include printers, lenses, and camcorders, check out Canon's website. Deals are available through Canon's online store as well as retailers. Here are our favorites that are discounted for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

  • Get the Canon EOS 90D APS-C DSLR with 18-135mm kit lens for $1,449 (regularly $1,599) from Canon, Best Buy, B&H, Adorama, and Amazon [You save $150]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories, as well as other camera-lens bundles.
  • Get the Canon EOS M6 Mark II APS-C mirrorless camera with 15-45mm kit lens and electronic viewfinder for $999 (regularly $1,099) from Canon, Best Buy, B&H, Adorama, and Amazon [You save $150]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Canon EOS RP full-frame mirrorless camera for $999 (body only, regularly $1,299) from Canon, Best Buy, B&H, Adorama, and Amazon [You save $300]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera with 24-105mm kit lens for $2,699 (regularly $3,399) from Canon, Best Buy, B&H, and Adorama [You save $700]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories, as well as other camera-lens bundles.
  • Get the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV full-frame DSLR for $2,499 (body only, regularly $3,099) from Canon, Best Buy, B&H, and Adorama [You save $600]
  • Get the Canon EOS Rebel T7 APS-C DSLR with 18-55mm kit lens, 75-300mm tele-zoom lens, and camera bag for $499.99 (regularly $649.99) from Canon, Best Buy, B&H, and Adorama [You save $150]
  • Get the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II in black for $399.99 (regularly $479.99) from Canon, Best Buy, B&H, Adorama [You save $80]
  • Get the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens for $399.99 (regularly $649.99) from Canon, Best Buy, B&H, Adorama [You save $250]

Ryze Tech Black Friday deal

This deal runs from now until December 4.

Ryze Tech makes an easy-to-fly quadcopter called the Tello, and it is ideal for first-time pilots. The Tello uses technology from two of Ryze Tech's partners, DJI (flight control) and Intel (processor).

In addition to general flying, pilots can conduct "trick" moves and safely launch it from the pilot's hand. Operated by using an app on a smartphone, it can fly for 13 minutes on one battery charge, and it has a 720p camera for capturing aerial videos.

Regularly $99, the Tello is already affordable. But right now you can get it for $79. The Tello Boost option, which comes with a battery charging hub, is $99 (regularly $149).

Tello Boost Combo deals:

Vimeo and DJI Black Friday deal

This deal runs from now until January 31.

Vimeo is partnering with DJI on a free camera promotion. Users who subscribe to the Premium plan ($900 a year) will receive an Osmo Action Camera.

Of course, this service isn't for everyone. But for those who sign up, the Premium tier offers up to 7-terabytes of storage, no ads, 10 team members, analytics, live streaming, the ability to sell videos, and more. The premium plan is designed for businesses or creatives who really need these services. Otherwise, you can get an Osmo Action Camera on sale for $279.

Adobe Black Friday deals

The Adobe Elements deal runs from now until December 2.

Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements are two of the best photo and video software, respectively, for consumers, yet they feature some powerful and useful tools trickled down from their full-featured versions.

You can choose to work in a simplified workspace with the most common tools or go into expert mode if you are a little more advanced. We really like the new tutorials that teach you how to best edit photos and videos, and there are fun features like easy collage creation, animated GIFs, object cutouts, and more.

Normally $149.99 for both, you can get it for $89.99 — a 40% savings. If you only need Photoshop Elements or Premiere Elements, you can purchase them separately for $59.99 each — regularly $99.99. You can choose to purchase the software on disc or as Mac or PC downloads.

Panasonic Black Friday deals

Panasonic's deals run from now until December 25.

Panasonic is discounting several of its Lumix mirrorless and point-and-shoot cameras, including the highly lauded GH5 — one of the best 4K-capable Micro Four Thirds cameras we've used for both photography and videography — and the long-zoom 4K FZ1000, an all-in-one that's great for wildlife photography or capturing anything from far away. While these aren't the latest models from Panasonic, they are highly-rated and are still top-notch for today, thanks to firmware updates. Check out this page for the savings on these cameras as well as lenses and camcorders. Here are our favorites.

  • Get the Panasonic GX85 with two lenses for approximately $449.99 (regularly $599.99-$999.99) from Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $150-$550]. Note that Adorama is including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Panasonic GH5 (body only) for $1,299.99 (regularly $1,499.99-$1,999.99) from Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $200-$700]. Note that Adorama is including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Panasonic FZ1000 for approximately $449.99 (regularly $599.99-$799.99) from Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $150-$350]. Note that Adorama is including additional useful accessories.

Fujifilm Black Friday deals

Fujifilm's deals run from now until December 29

Fujifilm is running a huge promotion on its X-series cameras, including lenses and bundles. There's too many to list, but you can see them all on Fujifilm's website. We are fans of Fujifilm's X-series cameras for their solid build quality, great performance, and fantastic image quality. Some of our favorite images ever taken were with Fujifilm cameras. You'll find deals on the highly versatile X-T3 to the compact X-T30, as well as older but still great options, like the X-Pro2. Fujifilm cameras are great buys thanks to frequent firmware updates, which add new features and lengthen their longevity. Here are some of our favorites.

  • Get the Fujifilm X-T3 for approximately $1,299.95 (black body only, regularly $1,499.95) from Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $200]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Fujifilm X-T30 with 15-45mm and 50-230mm lenses for approximately $1,099.90 (regularly $1,399.90) from B&H or Adorama [You save $300]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Fujifilm X-Pro2 for approximately $1,299.95 (black body only, regularly $1,699.95) from Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $400]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.
  • Get the Fujifilm XF23mmF1.4 R lens for approximately $799.95 (regularly $899.95) from Best Buy, B&H, or Adorama [You save $100]. Note that B&H and Adorama are including additional useful accessories.

Vuze XR VR Camera Black Friday deal

Vuze's Black Friday deal runs until December 2

The Vuze XR VR is a unique camera that lets you shoot 360-degree photos and videos or in 180 degrees. In 360-degree mode, you can capture everything around you. But press a button and flip out the two lenses, you can shoot in 180 degrees, which captures a wide view with depth perception, making it a more enjoyable experience when viewed with a virtual reality headset.

For Black Friday, you can pick one up for $299 — $140 off. After December 2, you can purchase it for $349 — $90 off.

Sigma Black Friday deals

Sigma deals run from now until December 5.

If you haven't used Sigma camera lenses, you're missing out. Sigma makes very high-quality optics, and you can save on a 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm from Sigma's lauded Art series, as well as the MC-11 Mount Converter that lets you use Sigma EF-mount lenses for Canon, onto Sony cameras.

The lenses are the 35mm F1.4 DG HSM Art, 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art, and 85mm F1.4 DG HSM Art. All three are available for different cameras and they deliver excellent images, not to mention very well made. Perhaps the best and more versatile option — not to mention the most affordable — is the 35mm. It's great for landscapes and portraits, and the best option for everyday use. If you're upgrading from a kit lens, consider this as your next purchase.

See B&H for additional discounts on Sigma lenses.

Insta360 deals run from now until December 2.

Insta360 is discounting five of its 360-degree cameras: the One X, One, Evo, Nano S, and Pro 2. In addition, Insta360 is adding free accessories for the One X (extra battery), One (selfie stick and other accessories), and Pro 2 (extra battery and charging station).

The best deals are on the One and Nano S. The One is a 360-degree camera that can be operated remotely or in your hand, while the Nano S is a camera attachment for your smartphone. Go for the Nano S if you want convenience, but pick the One if you want flexibility.

In terms of better image quality advanced functions, that's the newer One X. It's not getting as big of a discount, but it's 15% off its usual price.

The Pro 2 isn't a consumer product, but it's 10% off.

Black Friday camera deal FAQs

Where can I find Black Friday camera deals?

Authorized camera resellers, notably B&H and Adorama. As for big-box stores, you can count on Best Buy. You can also find deals at Target and Walmart for the more casual consumer cameras, like entry-level DSLRs and point-and-shoots.

Will any particular store offer better camera deals than others?

From our observation, no. Because many of these deals were determined by the manufacturer, you'll find the same price at Best Buy, B&H, Adorama, etc.; you may see a retailer knocking a buck off. However, B&H and Adorama are sweetening the deals by bundling extra accessories, which can be useful. It is possible to see limited-time lower-than-usual prices on actual Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Should I buy a camera deal from Amazon?

Amazon is great for photo and video accessories, but if you're looking to buy a camera, drone, or any high-ticket item, do your research. Make sure the seller is either Amazon or the camera maker, and not a third-party reseller. If you're in the US, make sure it carries a US warranty. Some manufacturers do not authorize sales on Amazon, such as Rode, so if you see a Rode product, it's likely from an unauthorized seller and Rode will not honor the warranty. With that said, we've purchased a Canon mirrorless camera through Amazon and had no issues.

Is it easy to return a camera that was purchased on Black Friday?

Most reputable retailers will accept returns provided it hasn't been used unless it was clearly stated otherwise. Because of their nationwide locations, Best Buy and other big-box retailers are the most convenient — even if you purchased it online — while online-only retailers are less so.

Are Black Friday camera deals actually real savings?

While companies inflate the listed savings by discounting off the MSRP, we've found that the deals we've listed here are good ones.

Is it worth buying an older camera on Black Friday?

While you won't get the camera makers' latest technologies, cameras that are a couple of years old tend to be still excellent. Gone are the days of cheap point-and-shoot cameras — today's cameras are advanced, high-quality products that will last a while, and nearly all manufacturers will release firmware updates that add new features or improve existing ones. Unless you're a demanding professional or prosumer photographer or videographer, most consumers will find that previous-generation products work just fine. As for the deals listed, we've made sure to avoid anything that's end-of-life.

NASA's plans for the 2020s include landing humans on the Moon, detecting quakes on Mars, and defending Earth from deadly asteroids

humans on mars (normal size)

NASA's plan for the next decade involves billions of dollars and spans millions of miles. And much like the universe, it's only expanding.

One year ago, NASA announced plans to send astronauts back to the moon. The agency said it would eventually build a lunar base, and springboard to Mars in the years after that.

Since that announcement, NASA has planned an explosion of new space exploration projects. In September, NASA administrators shared a new plan to launch a telescope into Earth's orbit that will hunt for deadly asteroids. In June, the agency introduced a mission to fly a nuclear-powered helicopter over the surface of Titan, an icy moon of Saturn, to scan for alien life.

Meanwhile, four new telescopes will try to photograph our entire cosmic history and map the dark matter that governs our universe.

Here are some of NASA's biggest and most ambitious plans for the coming decade.

SEE ALSO: Astronauts on the space station see vibrant desert patterns, roiling storms, and volcanic eruptions. These are the best photos ever taken from the ISS.

DON'T MISS: NASA is testing an alien-hunting, upside-down underwater rover in Antarctica. It's one of several plans to explore 2 ocean worlds for signs of life.

Several groundbreaking NASA missions are already in progress, including a probe that will rocket past the sun a total of 24 times.

Launched: August 12, 2018

Arrived: November 5, 2018

The Parker Solar Probe is traveling closer to the sun than anything from Earth before it. The mission aims to investigate the forces behind solar wind, which could inform efforts to protect technology on Earth from the sun's flare-ups.

Parker slingshots around the sun at record speeds of up to 213,200 mph; it finished its third close encounter in September. A powerful heat shield keeps the spacecraft's equipment cool.

Now it's heading towards Venus for its second pass around the planet.

Far from the sun, New Horizons is exploring the Kuiper Belt, a region of millions of chunks of ice left over from the solar system's birth.

Launched: January 19, 2006

Arrived at Arrokoth: January 1, 2019

The New Horizons spacecraft visited Pluto and the ice dwarfs surrounding it in 2015. In January, the spacecraft reached the farthest object anything human-made has ever visited: a snowman-shaped space rock called Arrokoth. (Before November, Arrokoth was informally named "Ultima Thule.")

The spacecraft sent back the following video of Arrokoth, though it will likely take until late 2020 for scientists to receive and download all the data from New Horizons' flyby.

So far, we've learned that the primordial object contains methanol, water ice, and organic molecules.

On the surface of Mars, the InSight lander is listening for quakes.

Launched: May 5, 2018

Arrived: November 26, 2018

Since the InSight lander touched down on the surface of the red planet, it has detected more than 20 Mars quakes. The early data is giving scientists new insight into the planet's internal structure.

A new Mars rover is expected to join InSight in 2021. NASA is building the vehicle in its Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Planned launch: July 2020

Anticipated arrival: February 2021

The Mars 2020 rover will search for signs of ancient microbial alien life on the red planet, collect and stash rock samples, and test out technology that could pave the way for humans to walk the Martian surface.

You can tune in to NASA's live broadcast of the rover's construction anytime, and watch the $2.1 billion mission take shape.

Researchers hope a future mission to Mars could pack up the rock samples that the rover collects and send them back to Earth.

Planned launch: Unknown

Anticipated arrival: Unknown

Until NASA sends another robot to Mars that could launch the stored samples to Earth, the 2020 rover will store the samples in its belly and search for a place on Mars where it can stash them for pickup.

NASA eventually hopes to send a crewed mission to Mars. But before that, the agency plans to return astronauts to the moon and build a lunar base.

Planned launch: Unknown

Anticipated arrival: 2024

NASA wants to send humans to the moon again by 2024. Those would be the first boots on the lunar surface since the Apollo program ended over 45 years ago. This time, however, NASA wants to build a moon-orbiting space station with a reusable lunar-landing system.

The idea is that the lunar base could allow for more in-depth scientific research of the moon. It could even enable us to mine resources there that could be converted to fuel for further space travel.

The agency plans to pave the way with a lunar rover that will create the first map of all the moon's water ice.

Planned launch: Unknown

Anticipated arrival: December 2022

Astronauts will likely need to harvest water ice from the moon so they can break it down into oxygen (for breathing) and hydrogen (for fuel). Nobody has yet mapped the ice on the moon's south pole, where NASA wants to set up its astronauts' base.

That's where it plans to send the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover.

If successful, the machine would be the first to ever land on the moon's south pole without crashing.

From the lunar surface, astronauts could make jet fuel to springboard to Mars.

Planned launch: 2030s

Anticipated arrival: 2030s

The next moon mission will test deep-space exploration systems, which NASA hopes will carry humans on to Mars.

NASA is already designing future astronauts' gear. They're sending spacesuit material on the Mars 2020 rover to test how it holds up in the planet's harsh atmosphere.

Astronauts traveling to Mars would have to spend about three years away from Earth. They would probably need to use resources from the lunar and Martian surfaces in the meantime. A deep-space habitat competition this year yielded a 3D-printable pod that could be constructed using materials found on Mars.

NASA also plans to investigate our solar system's past by exploring an ancient asteroid belt that surrounds Jupiter.

Planned launch: October 2021

Anticipated arrival: 2027

A mysterious swarm of Trojan asteroids — the term for space rocks that follow planets — trail Jupiter's orbit around the sun. NASA's Lucy mission plans to visit six of them.

"We know very little about these objects,"Jim Green, the leader of NASA's planetary science program, said in a NASA video. "They may be captured asteroids, comets, or even Kuiper Belt objects."

What we do know is that the objects are as old as the sun, so they can serve as a kind of fossil record of the solar system.

Relatively nearby, a spacecraft will scan for alien life in the saltwater ocean on Jupiter's moon Europa.

Planned launch: 2020s

Anticipated arrival: Unknown

When Galileo Galilei first looked at Jupiter through his homemade telescope in 1610, he spotted four moons circling the planet. Just over 400 years later, NASA's Galileo mission found evidence that one of those moons, Europa, conceals a vast ocean of liquid water beneath its icy crust.

NASA is planning to visit that ocean with the Europa Clipper, a spacecraft that will fly by the moon 45 times, getting as close as 16 miles above the moon's surface.

Clipper plans to fly through water vapor plumes that shoot out from Europa's surface (as seen in the NASA visual above) to analyze what might be in the ocean. Radar tools should also measure the thickness of the ice and scan for subsurface water.

That investigation could help scientists prepare to land a future spacecraft on Europa's surface and punch through the ice.

Anticipated launch and arrival: Unknown

The future lander would search for signs of life in the ocean, digging 4 inches below the surface to extract samples for analysis in a mini, on-the-go laboratory.

A nuclear-powered helicopter called Dragonfly is scheduled to take the search for alien life one planet further, to Saturn's largest moon, Titan.

Planned launch: 2026

Anticipated arrival: 2034

Titan is a world with water ice, liquid methane pools, and a thick nitrogen atmosphere. It somewhat resembles early Earth, since it has carbon-rich organic materials like methane and ethane. Scientists suspect that an ocean of liquid water might lurk 60 miles below the ice.

All that makes Titan a contender for alien life.

But getting to the distant, cold moon is not easy — Saturn only gets about 1% of the sunlight that bathes Earth, so a spacecraft can't rely on solar energy. Instead, Dragonfly will propel itself using the heat of decaying plutonium.

Another NASA team is developing a spacecraft to probe the metal core of a dead planet called Psyche.

Planned launch: 2022

Anticipated arrival: 2026

Most of the asteroids in our solar system are made of rock or ice, but Psyche is composed of iron and nickel. That's similar to the makeup of Earth's core, so scientists think Psyche could be a remnant of an early planet that was decimated by violent collisions billions of years ago.

NASA is sending a probe to find out.

"This is an opportunity to explore a new type of world — not one of rock or ice, but of metal," Lindy Elkins-Tanton, who's leading the mission, said in a press release. "This is the only way humans will ever visit a core."

If Psyche really is the exposed core of a dead planet, it could reveal clues about the solar system's early years.

The probe would be the first spacecraft to use light, rather than radio waves, to transmit information back to Earth. NASA gave the team the green light to start the final design and early assembly process in June.

NASA also has 176 missions in the works that use CubeSats: 4-by-4-inch nanotechnology satellites.

NASA is partnering with 93 organizations across the US on these CubeSat projects. Such satellites have already been built and sent to space by an elementary school, a high school, and the Salish Kootenai College of the Flathead Reservation in Montana.

The first CubeSats sent to deep space trailed behind the InSight Mars lander last year. They successfully sent data from the InSight lander back to Earth as it landed on the Martian surface.

One planned mission with the CubeSats will use lasers to search for ice on the moon's shadowy south pole.

It's expected to launch in November 2020. Another CubeSat mission, also set to launch in 2020, will fly past an asteroid near Earth — the first exploration of an asteroid less than 100 meters in diameter.

The data the satellite sends back could help scientists plan for future human missions to asteroids, where astronauts might mine resources as they explore deep space.

Closer to home, the European Space Agency's Euclid telescope will study dark matter and dark energy.

Planned launch and arrival: 2022

Dark matter makes up 85% of the universe, but nobody is sure what it is. Part of the problem is that we can't see it, because it doesn't interact with light.

Dark matter's gravity holds the entire universe together, while an unknown force called dark energy pushes everything apart.

Dark energy is winning, and that's why the universe is expanding. As Euclid orbits Earth, the space telescope will measure the universe's expansion and attempt to map the mysterious geometry of dark matter and energy.

NASA is working with the ESA on imaging and infrared equipment for the telescope.

The James Webb Space Telescope will scan the universe for life-hosting planets and attempt to look back in time to photograph the Big Bang.

Planned launch and arrival: 2021

It's been almost 30 years since the Hubble Space Telescope launched. The JWST is its planned replacement, and it packs new infrared technology to detect light beyond what the human eye can see.

The telescope will be able to capture extremely faint signals. Its goal is to study every phase of the universe's history.

That could reveal how the first stars and galaxies formed, how planets are born, and where there might be life in the universe.

A 21-foot-wide folding beryllium mirror will help the telescope observe faraway galaxies in detail. A five-layer, tennis court-size shield protects it from the sun's heat and blocks sunlight that could interfere with the images.

The farther JWST looks out into space, the more it will look back in time. It could even detect the first glows of the Big Bang.

With new infrared technology, it could help answer questions about how the galaxy and its black hole formed.

"Does the black hole come first and stars form around it? Do stars gather together and collide to form the black hole? These are questions we want to answer," Jay Anderson, a JWST scientist, said in an October press release.

With the Wide Field InfraRed Survey Telescope, NASA plans to detect thousands of new planets.

Planned launch and arrival: mid-2020s

WFIRST's field of view will be 100 times greater than Hubble's. Over its five-year lifetime, the space telescope will measure light from a billion galaxies and survey the inner Milky Way with the hope of finding about 2,600 exoplanets.

It will also test theories of general relativity and dark energy.

In September, NASA added a new Earth-orbiting telescope to its agenda. Its infrared cameras will be designed to detect near-Earth objects — one of the greatest threats to life on Earth.

Planned launch and arrival: Unknown — 2025 at the earliest

"This is a great step forward for thinking about human destiny, because the dinosaurs certainly did not have an asteroid-survey program to protect themselves," Richard Binzel, an asteroid researcher and professor of planetary sciences at MIT, told Business Insider. "Having knowledge of what's out there is something that the planetary science community has been advocating for for nearly 30 years. So this is a breakthrough decades in the making."

The mission will be based on previous plans for a similar telescope, NEOCam, which was never fully funded.

Eventually, an asteroid-hunting telescope could help us avoid surprises like the "city-killer" asteroid that flew within 45,000 miles of Earth in July and went unnoticed until it was just days away.

  • The legendary investor Warren Buffett avoids making predictions, but we've gathered 12 of his best guesses about cryptocurrency, table tennis, and even his own death.
  • We've detailed each prediction and assessed its accuracy in the slideshow below.

The legendary investor Warren Buffett knows better than to make predictions.

"We have no idea — and never have had — whether the market is going to go up, down, or sideways in the near- or intermediate-term future," he wrote in his 1986 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders.

Yet the Oracle of Omaha couldn't resist making a few guesses about the future over the years. We've gathered 12 of his most intriguing predictions and assessed their accuracy in the slideshow below.

1. Cryptocurrencies

Prediction:

"In terms of cryptocurrencies generally, I can say almost with certainty that they will come to a bad ending,"Buffett said in an interview with CNBC in January 2018. "Now, when it happens or how or anything else, I don't know."

He added: "If I could buy a five-year put on every one of the cryptocurrencies, I'd be glad to do it, but I would never short a dime's worth."

Outcome:

Buffett has been right about cryptocurrencies so far. At the time of his prediction, bitcoin traded above $14,000. The cryptocurrency slumped below $4,000 by the end of 2018, and it's now trading at about $7,800.

2. Flat-earthers

Prediction:

"Ships will sail around the world, but the Flat Earth Society will flourish,"Buffett said in a speech at Columbia's business school in May 1984.

Outcome:

Buffett may have been making a point about stubborn denialism in financial markets, but his prediction about so-called flat-earthers was correct — they've enjoyed a resurgence in recent years.

3. Berkshire Hathaway

Prediction:

"It is fitting that the visit of Halley's Comet coincided with this percentage gain: neither will be seen again in my lifetime,"Buffett told Berkshire Hathaway shareholders in 1985 after the conglomerate grew its net worth by 48.2%.

He also predicted that the 23.2% compounded annual growth in the company's per-share book value that year was "another percentage that will not be repeated."

Outcome:

It took nearly 20 years for Buffett to prove himself wrong on the first count. Berkshire Hathaway's net worth jumped by 48.3% in 1998, though that was largely because the company issued shares for acquisitions.

"Normally, a gain of 48.3% would call for handsprings — but not this year,"he told investors.

Buffett's second prediction was way off the mark. Berkshire Hathaway's per-share book value rose by 23.3% in 1986. It has also grown by at least 23.2% in more than 10 other years since 1985.

4. Sears

Prediction:

Buffett told students at the University of Kansas in May 2005 that Sears Chairman Eddie Lampert would struggle to revitalize the department-store chain. He warned that rivals such as Walmart and Costco could undercut Sears, which had just been acquired by Kmart.

"Eddie is a very smart guy, but putting Kmart and Sears together is a tough hand," Buffett said. "Turning around a retailer that has been slipping for a long time would be very difficult."

Outcome:

Buffett was right on the money. Sears filed for bankruptcy protection in October.

However, some hope remains: Lampert recently won court approval to buy the 126-year-old retailer out of bankruptcy and escape liquidation.

5. ABC, Geico, and The Washington Post

Prediction:

"We expect to keep permanently our three primary holdings, Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., Geico Corporation, and The Washington Post," Buffett told Berkshire Hathaway shareholders in his 1986 letter.

"Even if these securities were to appear significantly overpriced, we would not anticipate selling them, just as we would not sell See's or Buffalo Evening News if someone were to offer us a price far above what we believe those businesses are worth," he added.

Outcome:

Despite his best intentions, Buffett can't resist a great deal. Berkshire Hathaway sold its stake in Capital Cities/ABC to The Walt Disney Company in 1996 in a cash-and-stock deal worth $2.5 billion.

He also flogged his company's 28% stake in The Post to Graham Holdings in a deal worth more than $1.1 billion in 2014, according to the newspaper. The Graham family sold The Post to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in a $250 million deal in 2013.

Berkshire Hathaway remains a major investor in Geico, See's Candies, and The Buffalo News.

6. Freddie Mac

Prediction:

"In 1988 we made major purchases of Federal Home Loan Mortgage Pfd. ('Freddie Mac'),"Buffett told Berkshire Hathaway shareholders in his letter that year.

"We expect to hold these securities for a long time. In fact, when we own portions
of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favorite holding period is forever."

Outcome:

Luckily for Buffett, he changed his mind. Berkshire Hathaway sold nearly all its Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae shares in 2000, slashing its holding to 0.3% from 8.6% in 1999. Buffett told the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission in 2010 that he had become "concerned" about the companies' management.

"They were trying to and proclaiming that they could increase earnings per share in some low double-digit range or something of the sort," he said. "And any time a large financial institution starts promising regular earnings increases, you're going to have trouble, you know?"

7. Coca-Cola and Gillette

Prediction:

"No sensible observer — not even these companies' most vigorous competitors, assuming they are assessing the matter honestly — questions that Coke and Gillette will dominate their fields worldwide for an investment lifetime,"Buffett wrote in his 1996 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders.

"Indeed, their dominance will probably strengthen. Both companies have significantly expanded their already huge shares of market during the past ten years, and all signs point to their repeating that performance in the next decade."

Outcome:

Buffett's claims have proved sound so far: Both Coke and Gillette remain the biggest players in their markets, though the latter is under mounting pressure.

Coca-Cola's share of the US soft-drinks market was 41% in 1991, compared with Pepsi's 33%, and outsold its archrival fourfold in overseas markets, according to The New York Times. Its share of the global carbonated-beverage market was nearly 49% in 2015, according to Statista.

In contrast, Gillette's market share has fallen from about 70% in 2010 to 54% in 2016 in the face of fierce competition from startups including the Unilever-owned Dollar Shave Club and Harry's, according to a report from the data-tracking firm Euromonitor cited by The Wall Street Journal.

8. Death

Prediction:

"My expected lifespan of about 12 years (though, naturally, I'm aiming for more),"Buffett wrote in his 2006 letter to shareholders.

Outcome:

If Buffett had to pick one forecast to undershoot, he would probably choose this one. More than 12 years after writing the letter, he's still alive and seems to be in good health.

9. Table tennis

Prediction:

Buffett touted Ariel Hsing, a top-rated junior table-tennis player, as a "good bet to win at the Olympics some day"in his 2009 letter to shareholders.

Outcome:

Buffett's endorsement was more a marketing campaign for Hsing's presence at Berkshire Hathaway's next annual meeting than an actual prediction.

Hsing competed in the 2012 London Olympics, losing 4-2 in the round of 32 to the eventual gold medalist, Li Xiaoxia of China.

10. Housing

Prediction:

"Housing will come back — you can be sure of that,"Buffett told shareholders in his letter in 2011 after the US housing bubble burst, fueling the financial crisis.

He added: "We will again build one million or more residential units annually. I believe pundits will be surprised at how far unemployment drops once that happens."

Outcome:

Buffett was right about a recovery in housing and employment. Housing starts in the US were tracking at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of about 1.3 million units in October, according to the Commerce Department.

Unemployment has also fallen from 8.9% in 2011 to below 3.8% in 2018, an 18-year low, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

11. Index funds

Prediction:

"Over a ten-year period commencing on January 1, 2008, and ending on December 31, 2017, the S&P 500 will outperform a portfolio of funds of hedge funds, when performance is measured on a basis net of fees, costs, and expenses," Buffett predicted.

He posted the above prediction on Long Bets, a website for making long-term wagers and nominating charities to receive the winnings. Ted Seides, a manager of Protégé Partners, an asset manager that invests in multiple hedge funds, agreed to bet that a portfolio of five funds, invested in more than 200 hedge funds, would beat the S&P 500 index.

Outcome:

Buffett has argued for years that index funds offer better returns to investors than stock-pickers, as they provide exposure to a broad range of stocks and charge fewer fees.

He won the bet. The S&P 500 returned an average of 8.5% from 2008 to 2017, while the average return of the five funds it was up against was less than 3%.

Buffett donated his $2.2 million payout to Girls Incorporated of Omaha.

12. S&P 500

Prediction:

Buffett is notoriously skeptical that the good times will continue. In Berkshire Hathaway's 1999 letter to shareholders, Buffett and Charlie Munger, his partner, deemed it a "virtual certainty" that the S&P 500 would "do far less well in the next decade or two than it has done since 1982."

Outcome:

Buffett was right that the S&P's stellar average total return of just over 19% from 1982 to 1999 wouldn't last. The index returned an average of 1.2% over the next decade, according to SlickCharts, recovering to a respectable 12.2% from 2010 to 2018.

I tried the chickpea-based breakfast cereal that claims to be healthier than the regular kind and found it tastes just as good

  • The plant-based protein wave shows no signs of slowing down and has made its way to the cereal aisle, thanks to a range of challenger brands making cereal that they claim is low-carb, grain-free and keto-friendly.
  • One such brand is Three Wishes, launched just this month by Ian and Margaret Wishingrad, a husband and wife duo with a background in marketing, who wanted to create cereal that was "cleaner and more nutritionally-dense."
  • I tried all three of the brand's flavors to see how they compared to fan favorites like Honey Nut Cheerios and Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and I found that it tasted as good as, and sometimes better than regular cereal, and contains far less sugar and carbs
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The plant-based protein wave shows no signs of slowing down and has made its way to the cereal aisle.

What was once a sugary, childhood indulgence is now metamorphosing into a healthier version of itself, thanks to plant-based proteins like pea and chickpea and a number of challenger brands trying to take on Kellogg's and General Mills with cereal that they claim is low-carb, grain-free and keto-friendly.

One such newcomer is Three Wishes, a cereal brand launched just this month by Ian and Margaret Wishingrad, a husband and wife duo with a background in marketing, who wanted to create cereal that was "cleaner and more nutritionally-dense" than what's been ruling the roost for years.

The inspiration came from seeing plant-based protein brands like chickpea-based pasta alternative Banza take off, as well as the desire to feed their two-year-old son better. Three Wishes, they claim, is a high protein, low sugar, and grain-free breakfast cereal that does not sacrifice taste.

So how does the newcomer stack up to the reigning champions? I decided to put Three Wishes to test the next morning against some familiar cereal faces: Honey Nut Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Fruit Loops.

SEE ALSO: I served Popeyes' Cajun turkey at my Friendsgiving dinner, but I will probably never do it again

Three Wishes is available in popular cereal flavors like cinnamon, honey, and an unsweetened flavor. It retails at a suggested price of $5.99 at smaller grocery stores across New York, and at $7.99 on Amazon, and will soon be more widely available.

I tried the honey flavor earlier, and the cinnamon and unsweetened flavor with other competitor brands the day after Thanksgiving.

The cinnamon flavor was tasty and crunchy, with the cinnamon powder adding more flavor to the milk. It tasted just like Cinnamon Taste Crunch, but was far less messy to eat. It masks the taste of chickpea and pea protein — its two primary ingredients — fairly well, and has a nice kick to it.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch is an old favorite of mine, but I wouldn't think twice to ditch it in favor of Three Wishes, particularly if I was trying to get healthier and didn't want to sacrifice the taste. Cinnamon Toast Crunch has a fourth of the protein (2 grams), nearly two times as many carbs (33 grams), and four times the sugar (12 grams) compared to Three Wishes.

The honey flavor was also pretty good. It was crunchy and sweet, but not as overtly sweet as Honey Nut Cheerios. My colleague Lauren Johnson and I tried this flavor at our office recently and were both fans.

Three Wishes again may be "healthier" than Honey Nut Cheerios, but the latter has a distinct nutty flavor that Three Wishes lacked. Cheerios O's are also less dense and thinner than Three Wishes. So Three Wishes has some work to do on the flavor profile of its honey pack.

Last, I ate the unsweetened version of Three Wishes — a chunky, flavorless concoction of chickpea and pea protein that doesn't taste like anything. It's what you want to be eating if you're trying to cut down on sugar while still getting enough nutrition. But it was my least favorite.

I followed that by Fruit Loops — the medley of fruity albeit artificial flavors loved by many — not the fairest comparison I know. It was a party in my mouth after the unsweetened Three Wishes cereal. It's clear that they cater to very different target audiences.

Before my final verdict, it's worth noting that Three Wishes has some stiff competition in the healthy cereal category. Magic Spoon, for example, is an upstart that launched earlier this year and seems to have not just more variety but more protein (12 grams) versus Three Wishes' 8 grams. However, while Magic Spoon is focusing on a direct-to-consumer business, Three Wishes wants to focus on retail, said Ian Wishingrad.

Read More:Magic Spoon is a new 'childlike cereal for adults' that's high in protein and low in sugar — I tried all 4 flavors and now I'm hooked

Overall, Three Wishes is a pretty great alternative for those looking to enjoy cereal minus the sugar and carb overload. Its honey and cinnamon flavors don't compromise on taste and are as good as any generic cereal in the market, and its O's are in fact, crunchier. I'd skip the unsweetened flavor though unless you're keen on adding flavoring yourself.

9 foods you need to try the next time you visit Argentina

$

Las Pampas Argentina

  • Argentina has diverse food options. If you visit, there are some traditional dishes you should try.
  • Locals recommend grilled meats like steak and chorizo or Patagonian lamb.
  • Argentina is also heavily influenced by its Italian heritage and has pizza and liquors that come from that country.

Argentina is the world's eighth-largest country and each of its 23 provinces has diverse food options. Despite the size and breadth of the country, there are a few menu items you can find and eat throughout Argentina.

From steak on the parrilla to medialunas with yerba mate, these are the 9 must-eat foods to try the next time you visit.

Steak from the parrilla is a popular choice.

When one pictures Argentine cuisine, meat is often the first thing that comes to mind. So while you are there, make sure to try some meat from la parrilla, an open-fire grill.

If you find yourself in the Northern region of Patagonia near Bariloche, try the bife de chorizo, a particularly thick and juicy cut of beef steak. El Boliche de Alberto in Bariloche is said to have one of the best bife de chorizo in the area.

The key to the Argentine grilling process is patience. Each item is cooked slowly atop the heat of the parrilla, so the outcome is always grilled, but never dry.

And don't forget to try the chimichurri sauce on the side, with parsley, garlic, and vinegar.

Don't forget to try the cerdo (pig) or chorizo (sausage) from the grill.

The well-known parrilla or grilled meat culture in Argentina has many different variations. Though the beef of Argentina often takes the spotlight, don't forget to try the grilled cerdo (pig) or chorizo (sausage).

Matambre de cerdo (pork flank steak) is also a favorite of locals and visitors alike. The thin cut of meat absorbs a smoky flavor from the coals.

Patagonia's lamb will melt in your mouth.

If you like to eat lamb, then you have come to the right country. Cordero patagónico (Patagonian lamb) is a popular dish in Patagonia which spans across the lower parts of Argentina and Chile.

Oftentimes when you're in restaurants in Patagonia, you can watch the popular dish being cooked by slowly roasting an entire lamb over an open fire. It becomes the ideal comfort food after a long hike in Patagonia or a visit to Perito Moreno, the famous glacier in Los Glaciares National Park near the southern Argentine town of El Calafate.

Empanadas can be eaten at any meal, but they also make the perfect snack.

These delicious pastries can be found all the way from the northern tip of Argentina down to the south. They actually are Spanish and Portuguese in origin, which is why variations of them can be found across Latin America.

Empanadas are typically filled with ingredients like cheese, onion, meat, chicken, and vegetables. They're eaten as snacks as well as for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Don't miss Argentina's take on pizza.

Argentina, particularly Buenos Aires, boasts a proud Italian heritage. In the country's capital, you'll often hear the locals telling stories of their Italian grandparents. Immigrants from Italy began arriving in Buenos Aires in the late 19th century in hopes of a better life and brought with them their Italian language and, most importantly, their food.

The pizza in Argentina has evolved to adopt its own personal flair. The major difference between Italian and Argentine pizza is the hearty layer of cheese and Argentine-inspired toppings from artichoke hearts to slices of rich Patagonian lamb sausage.

Alfajores came from the Middle East, but found a home in Argentina.

An alfajor is a cookie sandwich made from two plain sugar cookies and a sweet filling, and although these treats are popular in South America, they are believed to have roots in the Middle East.

Alfajores can be found in any size and with a range of cookie options and fillings. The cookies can be made from either wheat flour or cornflour.

In the north, the filling in between the cookies will most likely include the traditional dulce de leche, or a mix of dulce de leche and chocolate. In the south, particularly in El Calafate, visitors can find alfajores filled with calafate, the berry the Patagonian town is named after. Legend says that if you eat the berry you will come back to Patagonia.

Medialunas are the croissant's Argentinian cousin.

Walking past a local cafe or bakery and you'll often see signs for a medialuna y café (medialuna and coffee) special. Medialuna literally translates to "half-moon." They are smaller than the average croissant and covered in a light layer of glaze, which adds a slightly sweet flavor to the pastry.

Though primarily eaten during breakfast or tea time, visitors can find medialunas at any time of the day. Try it as a snack with your coffee or tea, or as a dessert after a meal.

Yerba mate is meant to be shared.

A traditional South American tea made of herbs and twigs, yerba mate has been a part of Argentina's history for many years. Local legend has it that indigenous Guaraní people were introduced to the yerba mate plant by the Sun, who shared it as a gift.

Mate is meant to be shared so it's easy to spot groups of friends sitting around the park passing around a single calabaza.

Fernet con Coca is a beloved cocktail.

Perhaps Argentina's most loved two-ingredient cocktail, a Fernet con Coca, is a mix of fernet (an Italian liquor with notes of black licorice) and Coca Cola.

The love for this Italian liquor most likely stems from the country's strong Italian roots. Throughout the country, this beverage can be found in a variety of restaurants and bars, from the most upscale locales to your average neighborhood dive bar.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: 'Project Runway' hosts and judges

project runway hosts tim gunn

  • In "Project Runway," designers compete against each other for a grand prize, which gives them an opportunity to start their own fashion line.
  • The show premiered in 2004 and season 18 begins in December.
  • In 2018, contestant mentor Tim Gunn and host Heidi Klum, who were with the series since its inception, announced they were leaving "Project Runway."
  • Klum and Gunn are now working on a new show, "Making The Cut," which premieres on Amazon in 2020.

Whether you've watched "Project Runway" since season one or have become a recent fan of the high-stakes, high-fashion TV series, you're probably familiar with what it means to "make it work," and you may or may not get a little too excited when the designers get 30 minutes to pick their textiles at Mood fabric store.

One thing is obvious about the fashion competition reality show "Project Runway," though: It wouldn't be anything without the personas that are its judges and hosts.

"Project Runway"premiered in 2004 on Bravo, and its original host was Heidi Klum. The original judges were Nina Garcia, now the editor-in-chief of ELLE, and fashion designer Michael Kors. Tim Gunn was the contestants' mentor. The show was on Bravo from 2004 to 2008, then it was shown on Lifetime from 2009 through 2017. It made its return to Bravo for season 17, which premiered in 2019, and season 18 begins December 5.

Through the years, the show has changed, and so have the hosts and judges. Even Tim Gunn, whose "make it work" mantra became an iconic part of the franchise, left the show after the 16th season.

Keep reading for a look at the show's current panel of judges, as well as a look at where the originals are now.

Tim Gunn joined "Project Runway" in 2004 as a mentor to the designers.

Tim Gunn joined "Project Runway" as a mentor to the show's contestants in 2004, according to Bravo.

Prior to his on-air role, he worked as chief creative officer at fashion company Liz Claiborne Inc., and he's also taught at Parsons the New School of Design, according to an AdWeek interview.

Early on in "Project Runway," Gunn became known for his "make it work" mantra. In season two, one contestant, Santino Rice, was caught impersonating Gunn and his now-iconic sayings in the designer's workroom.

Gunn left "Project Runway" before season 17 premiered in 2018, but he still has more "make it work" moments up his sleeves.

In 2018, Tim Gunn announced his departure from "Project Runway" after 16 seasons of inspiring and guiding the show's contestants.

In a statement to Bravo, he said: "I am grateful to 'Project Runway' for putting me on a path I never, in my wildest dreams, thought my career would take me!"

He also hinted at future endeavors, saying: "'Runway' has led to incredible opportunities and I am currently at work on some new projects that I am very excited to share with you soon. I wish the show and everyone much success always."

Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn have been collaborating on a new fashion competition series for Amazon, called "Making the Cut," which is going to be released in 2020.

Heidi Klum was the host of "Project Runway."

Former supermodel and Victoria's Secret Angel Heidi Klum joined "Project Runway" in its first season in 2004 as its host and one of the judges.

Heidi Klum is currently working on a new show with Tim Gunn.

Since joining "Project Runway" as a host, Klum has taken on other business ventures and roles, like hosting "America's Got Talent" and partnering with grocery chain Lidl on her clothing line, Esmera by Heidi Klum, according to Forbes.

In September 2018, Klum made a post on Instagram where she announced her farewell to "Project Runway."

"After 16 incredible seasons, I am saying 'Auf Wiedersehen' to 'Project Runway,' a show that I was honored to host and help create," she wrote in the post.

Her Instagram caption also announced her next journey with Tim Gunn: "I'm most excited that my journey with my dear friend and colleague, @timgunn, is far from over. We will be partnering with Amazon for a new show, and we're excited for everyone to see what we're designing next!"

"Making the Cut,"which filmed its first episode in Paris this summer, pits 12 entreprenuers and designers against each other as they compete to take their brands to the next level. The winner will get $1 million for their company.

Designer Michael Kors was an outspoken judge on "Project Runway" for 10 seasons.

Michael Kors entertained fans for 10 seasons of "Project Runway" with his brutally honest critiques of contestants' designs.

Michael Kors left a legacy of quotable moments on "Project Runway" and continues to design for his eponymous fashion label.

Kors told People in a 2018 interview that he was supportive of the new "Project Runway" hosts and judges who were announced for season 17.

He continues to lead his fashion brand, Michael Kors, as the chief creative officer.

Nina Garcia was the fashion director at ELLE magazine when she first joined "Project Runway" as a judge in 2004.

In April 2008, Garcia became editor-at-large at ELLE, and in 2012, was named creative director of Marie Claire. In 2017, she returned to ELLE as editor-in-chief.

In an interview with The Cut, Garcia said, "'Project Runway' came at a pivotal moment in my career. The show was like the eye of the storm."

Nina Garcia, now editor-in-chief at ELLE, continues to judge on "Project Runway."

Garcia has been judging on "Project Runway" since 2004. She is the only original judge to continue on the show, but based on her social media posts, she and former "Project Runway" co-judge Michael Kors remain close friends.

Zac Posen replaced Michael Kors as a judge on season 11.

Fashion designer Zac Posen replaced Michael Kors as the fashion designer judge on "Project Runway"starting in season 11

He was also a guest judge on the third and fourth seasons of "Project Runway," according to the Hollywood Reporter, and he judged on "Project Runway All Stars" from 2014 to 2018.

Zac Posen left "Project Runway" on season 16 and recently closed his fashion label.

Zac Posen's last season as a judge on "Project Runway" was season 16, which was also the show's final season with Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn.

In a statement published on Bravo's website, Zac Posen said: "Working alongside Heidi, Nina, and Tim as a judge for six seasons of 'Project Runway' was one of the greatest experiences of my career. I will cherish the opportunity the show gave me to learn from and grow with my co-judges, the producers, crew, and designers."

In 2016, he collaborated with Delta Airlines to design new uniforms, according to the Zac Posen official website.

In November 2019, he announced he was shutting down his fashion label, which he'd started in 2001.

Supermodel Karlie Kloss took over "Project Runway" hosting duties after Heidi Klum.

The show's new host, Karlie Kloss, kicked off season 17 and its return to Bravo, according to Variety. She will be at the helm again in season 18. Kloss is a supermodel who's also known for her organization, Kode With Klossy, which creates opportunities for young women to learn how to code.

Christian Siriano, who won "Project Runway" in season four, is now a mentor on the show.

Christian Siriano was just 22 when he won season four of "Project Runway." Now, the award-winning designer is the one telling contestants how to "make it work" in his role as a mentor to the show's contestants.

Fans who remember Siriano when he was on "Project Runway" as a contestant know his catchphrase is describing successful fashions as "fierce." Someone even made this YouTube video of Siriano saying the word 46 times throughout season four of the show.

Journalist Elaine Welteroth joins Nina Garcia as a "Project Runway" judge with a background in media.

Former Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Elaine Welteroth joined the "Project Runway" panel of judges for season 17, according to Bravo. She will return for season 18.

Designer Brandon Maxwell, whose clothes have been worn by Meghan Markle and Michelle Obama, is also a judge on "Project Runway."

Designer Brandon Maxwell launched his line of women's ready-to-wear fashions in 2015, according to Bravo. His designs have been worn by Meghan Markle, Michelle Obama, and Oprah, and he joined the "Project Runway" judges panel for season 17.

In the words of Heidi Klum, "in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out."

While most of the show's original star judges have left, the current group of judges and hosts prove the show must go on. "Project Runway" fans will always have memories of their favorite judges from the earlier seasons of the show. Seasons eight through 16 are available for streaming on Hulu, and season 18 returns December 5.

On Amazon, the new AirPods Pro are $15 off (now $235), but if you're not looking to spend more than $200, the original AirPods are still a powerful and convenient alternative. In case you don't want to go to your nearest Walmart to pick up your order, you can also find them on Amazon.
  2. Roku Ultra with JBL Headphones, $48 (originally $99) [You save $51]  Enjoy the best price on Roku's streaming media player, which offers HD, 4K, or HDR picture quality, and comes with headphones that allow you to watch your favorite shows and movies on the big screen without disturbing anyone else. Read more about the differences between Roku devices if you're not sure which to buy.

  5. JBL Xtreme 2 Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker, $250 (originally $350) [You save $100] There are certainly more affordable portable Bluetooth speakers you can buy, but they often compromise on sound. The rugged JBL speaker has immersive stereo sound and impressive bass that make the $250 price worth it.
  6. Apple iPad (6th Gen) 128GB Wi-Fi, $349 (originally $430) [You save $81] Best Buy and Target are also selling this 2018 model, sixth-generation iPad, but you'll get the best Black Friday price at Walmart. It may not be the newest iPad, but it's still the best one you can buy because it has nearly all the same features as the more expensive iPad Air — just an older processor. The sixth-gen iPad features a sharp screen, high-end metal design, Apple Pencil support, a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and a generous 128 GB storage.
  7. Google Smart Light Starter Kit, $25 (originally $55) [You save $30] The GE bulb screws on like a regular light bulb but is much cooler than your average light bulb. You can dim the lights, turn them on and off, and create routines so you never have to get up to hit the light switch again. The same deal is at Best Buy and Target, but Walmart offers a few add-on options you might want to consider.
  8. KitchenAid Classic Plus Series 4.5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer, $199 (originally $279) [You save $80] If you're a beginner baker on a budget, we recommend this mixer because it's versatile, dependable, and quiet. Compared with other stand-mixer models (many of which are also on sale), it has the least powerful motor.
  9. Keurig K-Compact Single-Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker, $40 (originally $67) [You save $27] A reliable, efficient, and compact coffee maker under $50 is hard to come by. If there's any coffee maker brand you can trust, it's Keurig.
  10. iRobot Roomba 960 Vacuum, $399 (originally $700) [You save $301] The iRobot 960 is one of the brand's best-sellers for good reason: It works on all types of surfaces, cleans thoroughly and efficiently, and can be tracked through the corresponding app. Compared with other robot vacuums, it's on the higher end of the price spectrum, but it's certainly not the priciest. We named it the best high-end robot vacuum you can buy in our buying guide. You can save $251 on it during Black Friday.
  11. Xbox One S 1TB All-Digital Edition 3-Game Bundle, $149 (originally $250) [You save $101] This is the lowest price you'll see anywhere, and the deal is all the better because the bundle includes three must-own games: "Minecraft,""Fortnite," and "Sea of Thieves."
  12. Slumber1 by Zinus 8-inch Mattress (Queen), $149 (originally $209) [You save $60] You'll be hard-pressed to find a comfortable under-$200 Queen mattress anywhere else. Zinus specializes in affordable bedroom essentials, so we're not surprised one of the best home deals this Black Friday comes from the brand. The mattress ships in a box so you don't have to worry about inconvenient shipping or assembly.
  13. Hover-1 Maverick Hoverboard, $98 (originally $128) [You save $30] Your search for a Christmas gift is over thanks to this toy. Both parents and kids love its ease of use and durability, though you'll also love it for its more affordable sale price.

How we selected the best deals at Walmart:

  • We chose only products that meet our high standard of coverage and that we've either used ourselves or researched carefully.
  • We compared prices with those at other retailers like Target and Amazon and included only the deals that were the same or better (not including promotional discounts that come from using certain credit cards).
  • All deals are at least 20% off, with the occasional exception for products that are rarely discounted or provide an outsize value.

national dog show bts

Now in its 18th year, the National Dog Show is a beloved Thanksgiving tradition watched by 20 million people. It follows the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast on NBC.

This year, 2,000 dogs of 200 different breeds competed for the coveted Best in Show title. The winner, a bulldog named Thor, took the top spot with his "outstanding overall attitude."

But there are adorable moments that you didn't see on the air. Here are 20 behind-the-scenes photos from the National Dog Show.

Before they appear on camera and are evaluated by judges, the dogs are groomed to perfection.

Their coats are carefully combed and fluffed.

Grooming kits also make great pillows.

This standard poodle was snoozing on set.

Some of the smaller dogs wear blankets to keep warm.

An Italian greyhound wore a patterned blanket backstage.

It can get pretty cold back there.

The Pembroke Welsh corgi's fan club made sure there was no shortage of ear scratches.

Cuddling up to their owners also works in a pinch.

The dogs have some downtime when they're not on stage.

Handlers also sneak in naps when they can.

Handling prize-winning dogs is hard work.

The dogs and handlers share a special bond.

This was the Azawakh dog breed's first year in the National Dog Show.

It takes a lot of work and training to make it to the National Dog Show.

Getting to the National Dog Show often requires instructional classes and practice shows.

Handlers keep dog treats in their pockets to reward stellar performances ...

Brussels griffon dogs are known for being devoted and intelligent.

... and reward the hardworking pups with their favorite toys.

Zipadee, a 3-year-old golden retriever, loves her frog toy.

Backstage, the dogs can let loose.

Glen-Ellis, a 3-year-old Italian greyhound, was very excited to be there.

The dogs also have a chance to practice their stunts.

There's a separate competition for dogs who perform tricks, The Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge.

It's hard to resist a table piled with delicious bones, but these dogs are professionals.

This Bernese mountain dog gazed wistfully at a table of bones backstage.

The National Dog Show broadcast is hosted by actor John O'Hurley.

This was his 12th year hosting the show.

When he's not on TV, he visits the dogs backstage.

A long-haired dachshund gave the host a sloppy kiss.

The show is broadcast live, with cue cards helping O'Hurley with his hosting duties.

"Dogs always seem to be there for us," O'Hurley said to introduce a segment.

With 20 million people watching, everything has to go smoothly.

Members of production staff watch the video feed to make sure everything looks right.

Dogs are the stars of the show, but even they don't get all-access passes.

There are no dogs allowed in the bathroom at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks in Pennsylvania, where the competition is held.

Trophy polishers make sure the Best in Show award is ready to go.

The trophy also comes with a $20,000 prize.

A bulldog named Thor won the Best in Show prize this year.

He beat out 2,000 other dogs to win the prestigious title.
