  • A great Google Chromecast speaker not only allows for easy connectivity from Google and Android devices but also sounds great and may have Google Assistant, too.
  • The Google Home Max is our top pick because it has the best sound, seamlessly connects to your Chromecast, and it has the Google Assistant for voice control.
  • We're also tracking all the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals so you can find great products at great prices.

Multi-room audio is no longer just a dream. If you're an Apple user, it's easy to achieve multi-room audio with AirPlay 2. If you use Amazon's Alexa, then you can do so with speakers that work with Alexa. And, if you use Android phones and own a Google-focused home, then buying speakers with Chromecast built-in is the way to go.

When buying a speaker with Chromecast built-in (also called Google Cast), there are a number of things to consider. For starters, you'll want to think about everything you would normally consider when buying a speaker — like the size of the speaker, the price of it, and so on.

Apart from that, however, you'll also want to think about whether you want it to just be Chromecast-enabled or also to offer voice control with the Google Assistant. Some speakers go a step further with other smart features, like AirPlay support for Apple products. You'll also want to consider whether you want a speaker with a battery that makes it portable or one that simply plugs into the wall and remains stationary.

Thankfully, there are quite a few speakers with Chromecast built-in out there. As such, finding the right ones for your needs can be tricky, so we've rounded up the best Chromecast speakers you can buy.

Here are the best Chromecast speakers you can buy:

Updated on 11/29/2019 by Caitlin Petreycik: Updated prices and links.

The best Chromecast speaker overall

The Google Home Max may be on the large side, but the result is a huge sound and nice features like voice control with the Google Assistant.

If you want a speaker that sounds great and works with Google Chromecast, then the Google Home Max is the best way to go. The speaker is smart, sounds great, and works perfectly with other Chromecast devices.

The speaker isn't a small one — it's the largest in the Google Home range of speakers. It features a rectangular build with a fabric covering on the front of it and four lights underneath that fabric that indicate the status of Google Assistant. That's right, the speaker has Google Assistant built right into it, so you can use your voice to control it instead of having to rely on your phone or computer.

Of course, the best thing about this speaker is that it gets loud, and when it does, it still retains good sound quality. Generally speaking, the speaker boasts nice round bass response that doesn't go over the top, a well-tuned midrange, and clear and detailed highs.

Reviewers love the Google Home Max, too. TechRadar gave the speaker 4.5/5 stars, while The Verge gave it a slightly more conservative, yet still excellent, 7.5/10. So what are the downsides? Well, the main one is that the speaker is a little pricey, but it's also a little big and heavy for some.

Pros: Excellent sound, Google Assistant built-in, cool design, easy to use

Cons: A bit expensive and heavy

The best portable Chromecast speaker

The JBL Link 20 sounds good and has Google Assistant built right into it, but the best thing about it is that it has a battery inside that allows for up to 10 hours of playback time.

JBL has been building great wireless speakers for some time now, and the Link series is an excellent option for those who want Google-powered speakers for their home.

Notably, the JBL Link 20 is different from other wireless speakers in that it has a battery built right into it, which in turn means that you can use the speaker around the house without any hassle. The battery itself is 6,000mAh, which JBL says will give the speaker 10 hours of continuous playback.

Like some other smart speakers, the JBL Link 20 goes beyond simply offering Chromecast support. It also has the Google Assistant built into it, so you can control the speaker with your voice and use it to control different aspects of your smart home.

The sound quality of the JBL Link 20 is pretty good, too. The speaker boasts relatively good bass response, but the bass isn't as big as you'd get from some of the other speakers on this list. The midrange is relatively well-tuned, while the high-end is clear.

Plenty of reviews loved the JBL Link 20 speaker, too. Tom's Guide gave it an impressive 4.5/5, while TechRadar went for a slightly more modest 4/5. The only real downsides to the speaker are that the sound isn't necessarily as dynamic as it could be.

Pros: Inexpensive, portable, Google Assistant support, decent sound quality

Cons: Sound could be more dynamic

The best Chromecast soundbar

The LG SK8Y isn't just a speaker that sits on your shelf — it's a full soundbar that supports Chromecast and can be used with your TV, too.

Chromecast-enabled speakers don't have to be speakers that you throw on a shelf or table — they can also be speakers that you use for other things like for your TV. There are a few Chromecast-enabled soundbars out there, but the best of them has to be the LG SK8Y.

The SK8Y has a ton of cool features built right into it. For starters, it supports Dolby Atmos, plus it supports wireless surround sound, though you'll need to get the optional LG SPK8-S speakers to take advantage of that. On top of that, it comes with a subwoofer, which helps ensure you get all that low-end response. And, of course, the soundbar has Chromecast built into it.

When it comes to sound, the soundbar is quite good. As mentioned, it comes with a subwoofer, which means you'll get an extended bass response, however that subwoofer does seem to be a little subdued compared to some other soundbars. Things get better as the sound ranges up. The midrange is well tuned with nice warm low mids, while the high-end is clear and detailed.

The soundbar has gotten excellent reviews since it was released. Trusted Reviews and TechRadar both gave the soundbar 4/5, which isn't bad at all. The downsides noted in those reviews include that the soundbar only has one HDMI input and that it doesn't offer 4K passthrough, which means you'll be limited in the external equipment you can plug into the soundbar.

Pros: Good sound, comes with subwoofer, Dolby Atmos support

Cons: Limited connectivity

The best budget Chromecast speaker

The Toshiba TY-GC1000 looks good and sounds decent, but the best thing about it is that it offers Chromecast support in an inexpensive box.

If you're looking to outfit your home with Chromecast-compatible speakers and don't want to spend a ton of cash, then the Toshiba TY-GC1000 is definitely one to consider. The speaker looks great, sounds decent for one in its price range, and has a ton of features.

First, the design. The speaker has a textured fabric cover, which we quite like despite the boxy design. On the top, you'll get playback and connectivity controls, while on the back, there is the aux input for using the speaker with a wired connection and a power adapter.

Because the speaker is so cheap, you can't expect it to sound as good as the more expensive offerings, but it still doesn't sound bad at all.

The speaker is built to be able to offer decently deep bass thanks to the bass port on the back to it, and while the high-end does leave a little to be desired, it's not bad at all.

Pros: Very inexpensive, good value-for-money

Cons: Sound isn't as great as some others

The smartest Chromecast speaker on a budget

The Google Home has stood the test of time, coming in at a decent price and boasting decent sound quality for its size.

The classic Google Home may have been out for a few years now, but it's still an excellent option for those who want a Chromecast-compatible speaker and don't want to spend too much.

The speaker has Google Assistant built right into it, plus it looks nice and modern, so it should fit right at home in any room.

The speaker sounds pretty good, too. While you won't get the same bass response that you'll find on the Google Home Max, the bass isn't bad, and the midrange is decently tuned. The high end is relatively clean, but again, this isn't a speaker that will replace a dedicated stereo system.

When it comes to reviews, the Google Home has gotten some pretty good ones. CNET gave it 4/5, while Mashable gave it a step further with a score of 4.2/5. The main downside to the speaker is that it doesn't sound as great as some of the other speakers on the list.

Pros: Relatively inexpensive, has Google Assistant built in

Cons: Doesn't sound as good as some others

The best value plays in your DraftKings lineup for Week 13 of the NFL season

Chris Conley

  • Week 13 of the NFL season is here.
  • For daily fantasy players, the difference between winning and losing the day comes down to finding the best value plays at every position.
  • This week, we like Carson Wentz, Chris Conley, and more to outplay their prices in DraftKings and FanDuel.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Daily fantasy sports are all about finding value.

Last week was a solid one for our DraftKings value picks, with Baker Mayfield finishing the week as a top-five quarterback and wide receivers Robby Anderson and Tyler Boyd both going off for big days.

This week, we're back at it again, diving deep into the DraftKings player pool to find players that might be undervalued and can help you fill out your lineup when you feel the need to overspend at other positions.

Take a look below for our best value picks for your Week 13 DraftKings lineups.

QB: Carson Wentz, $5,800

Carson Wentz and the Eagles offense haven't been impressive in recent weeks, but a game against the Miami defense should do wonders to jump-start their scoring. Wentz has been without some of his top weapons the past few games but is expecting receivers Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor back in the starting lineup on Sunday.

RB: Phillip Lindsay, $5,000

The first time the Broncos faced off against the Chargers this season, Phillip Lindsay went off for 114 yards and a touchdown on just 15 carries.

At his price this week, he's a good bet to hope for a repeat performance.

RB: Nyheim Hines, $4,200

Last week we got the first look of the Colts without running back Marlon Mack. While Jonathan Williams got the lion's share of the carries, Nyheim Hines got a season-high nine rushing attempts and is more of a threat in the Indianapolis passing game as well.

If you're in the market for a budget running back, you could do worse.

WR: Alshon Jeffery, $5,100

It's tough to trust a player in his first game back from injury, but in daily fantasy, it's usually your best chance at getting a superstar at a reasonable price. If Jeffery can go, he's a threat to pop off for a big day against a Miami defense that has allowed an opposing receiver to clear 135 yards in two straight games.

WR: Chris Conley, $4,500

Chris Conley has been a hit-or-miss fantasy player this season, but I'm still holding out for Nick Foles' breakout game since returning from injury, and it feels like going against a Buccaneers passing defense that's ranked 31st in the league should help him greatly.

WR: Alex Erickson, $4,000

Last week we won the Bengals wide receiver lottery when our pick Tyler Boyd went off for five receptions, 101 yards, and a touchdown.

This Sunday, with Andy Dalton back under center for Cincinnati, we're going to back Alex Erickson as the Bengals receiver worth starting.

TE: Ryan Griffin, $4,300

Ryan Griffin has scored in two straight weeks. This week, the Jets play the winless Bengals.

It's a tough week for truly cheap tight ends, and it might be a position worth splurging on come Sunday. But if you can't afford a top-tier player, Griffin is at least a solid bet to score.

DEF: Cleveland Browns, $2,600

The Cleveland Browns might be down Myles Garrett, but facing a Steelers offense that has looked stale for a few weeks now and is backing Devlin "Duck" Hodges at quarterback this weekend, their defense is still a solid play this week.

Now check out our best bets for Week 13 of the NFL season...

NFL WEEK 13: Our official predictions for who wins this weekend

I drove over 50 cars, trucks, and SUVs in 2019. Here are the features I didn't like.

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

Over the course of a year, I test drive a car each week, and usually a few more here and there.

Consequently, I get to see everything the vehicle market has to offer, from mass-market sedans and pickup trucks to electric cars to supercars.

By and large, I'm pleased by the quality and choice that's on offer.

But I still amass a list of complaints along the way. Here they are:

The supercharger hump on the Chevy Corvette ZR1. The ZR1 is magnificent, but the 755-horsepower motor is so amped up with a hood-busting supercharger that it's actually hard to see the road. Oh well, what are you gonna do?

The ride quality on the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. This is a race-track car. On public roads, it's very uncomfortable.

The interior of the Chevy Silverado. The new Silverado was redesigned for 2019, but the interior wasn't significantly upgraded.

The prop rod on the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. It didn't work.

Almost everything about the Fiat 500X. It's the worst vehicle I've driven in my career at Business Insider.

The backup and auto-parking system on the BMX X7. They sort of work, but they're rather harrowing.

The engine and transmission on the Toyota RAV4. For a crossover as popular as this, the crude throttle response and bumpy shifting was unacceptable.

The rear wing on the Honda Civic Type R. I know, I know. It's THAT kind of car. But I still don't have to like it.

As long as we're on Civic, I also dislike the tail lamp design. They look like a pair of crab craws!

Navigate on Autopilot in the Tesla Model 3. Rather than enhance the driving experience, I felt that it forced me to pay even more attention to Autopilot than I usually do.

The front end of the Bentley Bentayga. It's the front of a Bentley stuck onto the body of an Audi.

The joystick shifter on the BMW Z4. I hate joystick shifters, and the Bimmer has one of the worst.

The joystick shifter on the Cadillac XT4. Cadillac's is also annoying.

The trackpad infotainment interface in the Lexus UX hybrid SUV. Lexus has the least user-friendly system of any major auto brand.

The interior of the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. It screams practical plastic.

The dual infotainment screens of the Acura TLX A-Spex PMC. I used to like this feature, but I now think it's redundant.

The infotainment system in the Jaguar XE P300 and ...

... The climate controls in the Jaguar XE P300. Jaguar Land Rover still haven't gotten its game together on this front.

The infotainment system AND climate controls in the Range Rover Sport hybrid. Jaguar's corporate stablemate has the same problem.

The anima controller in the Lamborghini Urus. Yes, it's cool, but I'd rather have it on the steering wheel.

The rear end of the Toyota Supra. The rebooted Supra is great, but its, um, boot isn't.

The headlights on the Porsche Cayenne. They work on the 911, but they never have here.

The business proposition of the VW Arteon. It's a nice sedan for a market that doesn't want sedans.

The price of the Chevy Blazer. At $48,000, I thought my test vehicle was tad rich.

The dated vibe of the Nissan GT-R. The 1990s called and they want their instrument cluster back.

LG 65-inch C9 OLED 4K TV

LG 65-inch C9 OLED 4K TV, $1,997 (originally $2,796.99) [You save $800], available at Newegg

LG's 2019 C9 OLED is among the very best 65-inch 4K HDR TVs on the market, and it's now available for one of its lowest prices ever. It's on sale at most retailers for $2,099, but Newegg is offering it at the lowest price we've seen, for $1,997.

Thanks to its OLED panel, the TV is capable of superior black levels, contrast, and viewing angles over traditional LCD and QLED displays, making it an ideal pick for home theaters. HDR playback with Dolby Vision support is also included, along with wide color gamut coverage, HDMI 2.1 ports, a voice remote, and support for Google Assistant and Alexa.

Note: Newegg is offering it through a third-party reseller. Best Buy, Amazon, and other major retailers are offering it for approximately $2,100  — Steven Cohen

LG 65-inch B9 OLED 4K TV

LG 65-inch B9 OLED 4K TV, $1,799.99 (originally $2,299.99) [You save $500], available at Best Buy

LG 65-inch B9 OLED 4K TV, $1,796.99, (originally $2,299.99) [You save $503], available at Amazon

LG's most affordable 65-inch OLED TV is now even cheaper thanks to a $500 discount. While it uses a slightly less powerful image processor compared to the C9, the B9 still features the same great OLED panel found on LG's more expensive display models — enabling superior black levels, contrast, and viewing angles over traditional LCD and QLED displays. HDR playback with Dolby Vision support is also included, along with wide color gamut coverage, HDMI 2.1 ports, a voice remote, and support for Google Assistant and Alexa. If you miss the C9 deal at Newegg, definitely try to snag this one.  — Steven Cohen

Vizio 65-inch P-Series Quantum 4K TV

At a sale price of just under $900, VIZIO's mid-range 2019 65-inch Quantum TV offers some of the best image performance for its class. With quantum dots, 200 zones of full-array local dimming, Dolby Vision support, and up to 1,100 nits of brightness, the set's HDR and color performance rival many competing LCD displays that cost more. Though the TV's SmartCast streaming platform doesn't have as many on-screen apps as some competitors', the display allows customers to cast a larger selection of streaming services to the TV from an Android or iOS device.  — Steven Cohen

Sony 65-inch A8G OLED 4K TV

Sony 65-inch A8G OLED 4K TV, $1,998 (originally $2,799.99) [You save $801.99], available at Amazon

Not content to let LG have all the fun, Sony is also discounting one of its OLED TVs for Black Friday, offering the A8G for $800 off its regular price. While it lacks the more advanced processing found in the company's step-up A9G model, the A8G still features impressive performance with inky black levels, wide color gamut coverage, and Dolby Vision HDR support. The Android TV platform is also integrated for access to a nice selection of apps, and the display uses Sony's unique Acoustic Surface technology to turn the screen itself into a speaker.  — Steven Cohen

Samsung 65-inch Q70R QLED 4K TV

Now available for $1,000 off its MSRP, Samsung's Q70R is the company's most affordable 2019 QLED display with full-array local dimming technology, allowing the TV to produce deeper blacks levels compared to step-down LCD models. Unlike some other brands, Samsung's TVs don't include Dolby Vision capabilities, but the Q70R does support the competing HDR10+ format. Quantum dot color, voice control via the Bixby voice assistant, and Samsung's Tizen-powered smart TV platform are all integrated.  — Steven Cohen

TCL 75-inch 75R615 Roku 4K TV

TCL 75-inch 75R615 Roku 4K TV, $1,199.99 (originally $1,299.99) [You save $100], available at Best Buy

If you're in the market for an extra-large screen, this 75-inch TCL 4K HDR TV offers an incredible value at its current sale price. While it lacks the more advanced quantum dot technology found in the company's newest models, the display still offers wide color support and features 160-zones of full-array local dimming for deep black levels and great HDR performance. The TV's integrated app selection is also comprehensive and responsive thanks to the use of the Roku smart TV platform.  — Steven Cohen

Vizio 65-inch P-Series Quantum X 4K TV

Vizio 65-inch P-Series Quantum X 4K TV, $999.99 (originally $1,699.99) [You save $700], available at Costco

With support for up to 3,000 nits, the Quantum X is one of the brightest 4K displays on the market from any brand, enabling impressive HDR performance. Though gradients aren't as smooth as some competing models, the TV's quantum dot technology enables great wide color gamut capabilities. The SmartCast platform is also integrated, letting customers access select streaming services via the display's on-screen interface and an even larger assortment of apps from a separate Android or iOS mobile device.  — Steven Cohen

For users ready to make the leap to 8K, you can get a whopping $5,000 price cut on Samsung's giant-sized 82-inch Q900 QLED TV. Though actual 8K content isn't really available yet, the TV offers advanced upscaling, allowing the display to enhance lower-resolution videos like 4K or 1080p. VIZIO's entry-level 65-inch Quantum TV is now available for $650, making it a great option for customers who want to upgrade to a new wide-color 4K HDR set without breaking the bank. Performance isn't quite on par with the company's more expensive models, but with 90 zones of full-array local dimming, up to 600 nits of brightness, and Dolby Vision support, the TV offers great HDR playback for its price. VIZIO's SmartCast platform is also featured, enabling app casting from mobile devices and compatibility with Alexa or Google Assistant devices.  — Steven Cohen

Like other Samsung displays, it comes with Bixby voice control and compatibility with Google Assistant and Alexa devices.  — Steven Cohen

It doesn't include many of the step-up features like local dimming, quantum dots, or Dolby Vision found on most of the displays listed here, but TCL's 65-inch S425 still offers solid entry-level 4K performance for its price. Basic HDR capabilities are onboard, along with reliable streaming app support through the display's integrated Roku smart TV platform. We named TCL's S425 series the best affordable TV for 2019. — Steven Cohen

What brand of TV is the best?

If you plan on shopping for a TV on Black Friday, you'll likely see an overwhelming number of deals and bundles. To make sure you don't waste money on devices that won't last or don't deliver the quality you're looking for, we recommend that you choose the TV you want in advance, and then figure out when (and where) you'll get the lowest price.

To find the best TV brand for you, you'll first want to figure out your price range: TCL and Insignia sell a number of widely recommended budget TVs, while Samsung, Sony, and LG are better known for high-end devices.

If you plan on using your TV's native interface (rather than connecting a streaming stick), you should also research various brands' operating systems. LG's smart TVs run the company's voice-enabled, highly advanced WebOS, while TCL's TVs run the more bare-bones Roku interface.

You'll also want to consider the resolution you're looking for, the size you want, and the number of ports you need (if you plan on connecting a lot of peripherals). — Monica Chin

Will TV prices drop after Christmas?

Some TVs may see lower prices after Christmas than they do on Black Friday. But keep in mind that Black Friday is the only day of the year when just about every television is certain to see a discount. It's possible that the TV you want will keep its low price through the new year — but this won't be the case for all TVs, so make sure you've done your research if you plan to sit Black Friday out. — Monica Chin

What are the best TVs for 2019?

The best TVs for 2019 include:

  • LG C8 OLED TV: The $1,245 OLED C8P provides an incredible viewing experience. It also features LG's state-of-the-art WebOS, powered by the company's top-notch a9 processor. And it's much better value than many luxury OLED TVs, which can cost multiple thousands of dollars.
  • TCL 6 Series Roku TV: The $530 TCL 6-Series is our favorite 4K TV under $650. It's one of the only TVs at its price point to feature contrast control zones, which can adjust brightness only in certain areas to add dynamic contrast. It's the closest you can get to an OLED panel at a budget price. It's also powered by Roku TV, which is easy to use and features thousands of apps.
  • Sony A9F OLED TV: If you're seeking a truly premium set, we recommend the $2,100 Sony Bravia A9F. It has speakers built into its kickstand which use the TV's surface area to disperse sound throughout your living room. It runs Android Oreo, which is simple to navigate and integrated seamlessly with Google Play apps and Google Assistant. And most importantly, it delivers the most breathtaking picture of any TV on the market.
  • Vizio P-Series: Vizio's mid-range P-Series is the best TV for the money. The picture quality is comparable to that of Samsung's QLED panels, providing a very bright picture that supports HDR content. Vizio's TVs work with Alexa and Google Assistant, and you can cast up content from your phone or computer with Vizio's SmartCast feature.
  • Samsung Q8 Series: Samsung's Q8FN is the best TV for gamers. It offers an excellent 13ms response time, and a 120Hz panel, and it supports FreeSync, an open-source refresh-rate technology which enables the TV to sync its own refresh rate with the output of the connected device. The result: You'll have a smooth experience playing games running at high frame rates. — Monica Chin

london bridge terror attack

At least one victim was killed, multiple others were injured, and a suspect was fatally shot by police on Friday after a terrorist incident on London Bridge.

A number of details remain unclear, including the number and condition of the victims and the identity and motive of the suspect, but police have steadily begun creating a timeline of Friday's deadly incident.

Here's how the event unfolded.

London Metropolitan Police were called to London Bridge for a stabbing incident on Friday, November 29, 2019, at 1:58 p.m. local time.

Authorities quickly declared the attack a "terrorist incident," and said the man was found with a knife and a "hoax explosive device."

He had been tackled to the ground and disarmed by members of the public, who were immediately hailed as heroes and praised for their bravery.

Videos from bystanders showed authorities arriving at the scene, pulling civilians off the suspect, and shooting the suspect from close range.

A group of civilians could be seen tackling the suspect to the ground and wrestling away his weapon.

One bystander told The Telegraph he "kicked him in the head to make him release his knife."

In one video, a man can be seen backing away from the group of people holding a knife, apparently trying to move it further away from the suspect.

Neil Basu, the assistant commissioner for the London Metropolitan Police, said the suspect was shot by specialist armed officers and died at the scene.

Authorities quickly evacuated the area, shutting down the bridge and the train station for several hours as panicked residents sought cover.

Witnesses and bystanders dove for cover in local restaurants and shops, or hunkered down in office buildings.

Police shut down London Bridge and began searching the nearby Borough Market, evacuating each bar one by one.

London Bridge station wasn't reopened until 6:30 p.m. local time.

Over the next few hours, local and national leaders have lauded the bravery of the civilians who tackled the suspect without knowing the apparent explosive device was a hoax.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson praised the bravery of those "who physically intervened to protect the lives of others."

He added: "To me, they represent the very best of our country, and I thank them on behalf of all of our country."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan also thanked the civilians involved, applauding the "breathtaking heroism of members of the public who literally ran towards danger."

Shortly after 8 p.m., the police commissioner told reporters that two of the stabbing victims had died and another three were injured and were being treated in hospital.

Commissioner Cressida Dick warned that the incident had sparked "a very fast-moving, dynamic investigation," and that details on the suspect's identity weren't immediately available.

50 iconic red-carpet looks celebrities wore in the 2010s

Most iconic red carpet looks of the decade

The 2010s began with a meat dress and ended with the world's tiniest purse

It has been a wild 10 years of red-carpet fashion. The decade saw Hollywood stars going bolder with their style as social media turned even more eyes on their showstopping looks.

We've seen stunning couture gowns make their way from the runway to the red carpet, along with a (fake) severed head, sky-high slits, a papal tiara, and yes — plenty of naked dresses

From Rihanna and Beyoncé to Billy Porter and Lady Gaga, the Oscars and Met Gala to the Emmys and Cannes, here are 50 of the decade's most iconic red-carpet looks.

Zoe Saldana refused to play it safe at the first Academy Awards of the decade in March 2010, wearing a bold purple gown.

Saldana's Givenchy Couture gown featured a glittering top and a purple ombré skirt that turned from silk into voluminous layers of tulle. It was a risk that paid off; the daring look put Saldana at the top of many best-dressed lists for the night.

Few looks of the decade became more famous than Lady Gaga's meat dress at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

The pop star, whose dress was made entirely out of raw meat, later told Ellen DeGeneres that she was protesting against the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy against gay soldiers.

"If we don't stand up for what we believe in, if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones," she added.

President Barack Obama signed a repeal of the policy into law two months later.

A pregnant Natalie Portman absolutely glowed in this romantic gown from Viktor & Rolf at the 2011 Golden Globes.

Portman may have made headlines that night for her joke about then-fiancé Benjamin Millepied during her acceptance speech, but it didn't outshine the "Black Swan" star's gorgeous red carpet dress.

The custom silk gown featured a big red rose in the middle, which was covered in Swarovski crystals.

Cate Blanchett brought high fashion to the 2011 Oscars red carpet with this couture gown by Givenchy.

Blanchett later told InStyle that she was drawn to how "architectural" the dress was, noting that the breast plate was "made all out of elastic."

"The color combination, I couldn't believe it when I saw it in real life," she added. "People get so worried about dressing for other people, but you've got to wear what you like."

Jennifer Lawrence made her Oscars debut in 2011 with this custom red gown by Calvin Klein.

Lawrence, who was just 20 years old at the time, instantly became one to watch on the red carpet with this simple but stunning gown.

Two years later, she would take home the best actress prize (but not before a famous spill on the steps up to the stage).

Mila Kunis brought lavender to the red carpet with this gorgeous Elie Saab gown at the 2011 Oscars.

Kunis joined Lawrence at the top of the Oscars best-dressed list that year with her stunning chiffon gown, which featured sheer panels and plenty of stunning lace for a look that felt both romantic and modern.

Angelina Jolie has been a Hollywood star for decades, but no red-carpet moment was more iconic than her famous leg pop at the 2012 Oscars.

Jolie put the thigh-high slit in her black Atelier Versace gown to good use at the 2012 Oscars, delivering a leg pop that would inspire countless imitations, memes, and even its own Twitter account.

This year, Jolie revealed that she had actually been planning to wear a different dress that night.

"I had a more complicated dress and I wore the more comfortable dress, which was that one," she told People. "And I think I was just so comfortable that..."

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Meryl Streep also stunned at the 2012 Oscars with this gorgeous gold Lanvin gown.

Streep doesn't often go for glitter on the red carpet, so she pleasantly surprised many when she arrived at the Academy Awards in this gold lamé gown.

Hours later, Streep would get a matching accessory after winning an Oscar for the first time in 30 years, taking home the best actress award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

While most stars stuck to column dresses at the 2013 Oscars, Amy Adams went for drama with a full tulle skirt.

Adams' stunning silver gown was designed by the late Oscar de la Renta, who was inspired by a black-and-white photograph that she had given him for inspiration.

"It was sort of a real 'aha' moment for him when he saw this one specific photograph," Cristina Ehrlich, Adams' stylist, told People at the time.

Kim Kardashian West went viral after wearing a head-to-toe floral gown at her very first Met Gala in 2013.

The floral gown went viral within moments after Kardashian West stepped onto the red carpet, even eliciting a response from the late comedian Robin Williams.

Kardashian West, who was pregnant at the time with her first child North, recently revealed that she cried "the whole way home" after the gala

"I just couldn't believe it," she told Vogue. "There were all these memes about me and this couch."

But the reality star said she felt instantly better when Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen came up to her and said that they "loved" the dress.

"So none of the critics mattered," she added. "Because the Olsen twins approved."

Lupita Nyong'o cemented her status as a fashion favorite with this custom Prada gown at the 2014 Oscars.

It may have been Lupita Nyong'o's very first Oscars, but that didn't stop the "12 Years a Slave" star from wowing viewers with her light-blue Grecian gown.

Nyong'o told Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet that she selected the dress because "it's a blue that reminds me of Nairobi," referring to her hometown in Kenya.

"I wanted to have a little bit of home," she added, just hours before taking home the award for best supporting actress.

Sarah Jessica Parker gave a touching tribute to Oscar de la Renta at the 2014 Met Gala, just months before the iconic designer passed away.

Parker, who had been friends with the designer since 2000, revealed that she specifically asked de la Renta if she could put his iconic signature on the back of the gown.

"The point of the signature, and doing it in scarlet instead of his traditional navy, was to honor him — to scream it from the rooftop without opening my mouth," she wrote in The Hollywood Reporter after de la Renta's death in October 2014.

"This is a man who spent the last 50 years building dresses. He's singular. And that night I wanted to say thank you and pay tribute to him."

Rihanna single-handedly launched the naked dress trend with her daring look for the CFDA awards in June 2014.

Rihanna wore the Adam Selman gown, which was covered head-to-toe in Swarovski crystals, to retrieve her style icon award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

It was a look that would be copied by everyone from Beyoncé to Kim Kardashian West, but Rihanna later revealed that she did have one regret when it came to the famous naked dress.

"Could you imagine the CFDA dress with a bra? I would slice my throat," Rihanna told Vogue in 2016. "I already wanted to, for wearing a thong that wasn't bedazzled. That's the only regret I have in my life."

Speaking of naked dresses, Beyoncé stunned in her most revealing look to date at the 2015 Met Gala.

The 2015 Met Gala saw a slew of naked dresses after Rihanna's CFDA moment the year before, but Beyoncé's was the clear standout.

Beyoncé sparkled in the bejeweled Givenchy gown, which was covered with strategically placed gems in silver, green, pink, and yellow. The high ponytail at the top of her head added extra drama to an already showstopping red-carpet entrance.

Few Met Gala looks are as iconic as the 55-pound cape dress that Rihanna wore in 2014.

While everyone else was imitating her naked dress from the year before, Rihanna was making new waves with Chinese couture.

The star revealed that she found the dress, designed by Guo Pei, online.

"I'm so in love with this dress, but the train is insane!" Rihanna told Vanity Fair on the red carpet. "I can't really walk in it without any help — but it's so worth it. I love this dress so much! It's handmade by one Chinese woman and it took her two years to make."

Anne Hathaway departed from her usual pastel and sparkly gowns with this futuristic custom Ralph Lauren gown for the 2015 Met Gala.

The gold lamé column gown, complete with a hood, divided fashion fans. Hathaway made best dressed lists, but was also likened to a character from "Star Wars."

Either way, the dress was definitely a bold red-carpet moment for the former "Princess Diaries" star.

Lupita Nyong'o brought her red-carpet A-game to the Cannes Film Festival in 2015, where she wore a gorgeous jade-green gown by Gucci.

Nyongo stole the show in this stunning custom gown, spinning around on the red carpet to show its incredible movement.

The gown, which also featured hand-painted floral crystals, was later dubbed "grasshopper green" by Nyongo in an Instagram post.

Taylor Swift brought crop tops and color blocking to the red carpet at the 2016 Grammys.

The songstress turned heads with this stunning departure from her usual glittering gowns, instead opting for a custom tangerine Atelier Versace crop top and fuchsia skirt with a thigh-high slit.

Swift also debuted a new bob hairstyle at the awards, cementing the night as one of her most iconic red-carpet looks to date.

Claire Danes transformed into Cinderella with this glowing Zac Posen gown at the 2016 Met Gala.

Danes' light blue dress already looked fit for a Disney ball, but it became even more breathtaking in the dark

The gown was actually made of fiber-optic woven organza, and had 30 miniature battery packs sewn into it.

Janelle Monáe is the queen of black and white on the red carpet, as proven by this gorgeous checkered Nicci Hou gown she wore to the Critics' Choice Awards in 2016.

Monáe rarely strays from her black-and-white aesthetic, but she still stands out with gorgeous patterns.

In 2013, Monáe told the Huffington Post that her style was a "dedication to uniformity."

"I'm a minimalist by heart," she added. "But a lot of it had to do with me wanting to have a uniform like the working class."

Kerry Washington proved that maternity wear can also have plenty of drama and flair at the 2016 Emmys.

Washington stunned in her custom Brandon Maxwell gown, which featured a cape and daring cutouts above her baby bump.

The "Scandal" star, who gave birth just weeks later, spoke of the difficulty that comes with walking the red carpet when you're expecting.

"When you're a pregnant lady on the red carpet, you need to feel like a superhero," she told Extra before the show.

Emma Stone dressed for success at the 2017 Oscars with this gorgeous gold Givenchy dress, which matched the best actress trophy she won hours later for "La La Land."

The Givenchy Haute Couture gown featured a fringed skirt and a bodice covered in Swarovski crystals embroidery.

Stone was the first actress to win an Oscar while wearing Givenchy since Audrey Hepburn won in 1954 for "Roman Holiday," according to The Hollywood Reporter

A 21-year-old Zendaya made her presence known at the 2017 Met Gala with this stunning parrot-printed ball gown.

Zendaya proved she was going to be a major red-carpet force for years to come with this gorgeous off-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana gown.

The former Nickelodeon star paired the look with a voluminous Afro that became a major beauty moment of the night as well.

Priyanka Chopra made sure all eyes were on her at the 2017 Met Gala with this custom trench gown by Ralph Lauren.

The gown featured a dramatic — and seemingly endless — train, adding a major dose of avant-garde to Chopra's entire look.

It was later revealed that the ensemble was actually a minidress with a removable skirt and train, ensuring that Chopra could easily get ready for the after-party.

Few love a naked dress as much as Bella Hadid, but the supermodel gave the trend a gorgeous update at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

It would have been hard to top the red dress (and sky-high slit) that Hadid wore on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival the year before, but she managed to anyway with this stunning creation by Ralph & Russo.

Hadid wore the one-shoulder gown, which was covered in strategically-placed crystals, with high-waisted nude briefs and silver sandals that wrapped all the way up her ankles.

As the #MeToo movement rose in Hollywood, celebrities banded together with a blackout at the 2018 Golden Globes to show their support.

After the horrors of assault in Hollywood finally came to light, its biggest stars decided to take a stand against sexual harassment and raise awareness for their new Time's Up initiative by only wearing black at the Golden Globes.

"It's our job right now,"America Ferrera said during an interview on the red carpet. "The time is now for us to do the work that will make women and all people more safe and more equal in their work places and in their lives."

Cardi B topped numerous best-dressed lists with this angelic white gown at the 2018 Grammys.

Cardi B's Ashi Studio dress, which featured wings in the back, was initially going to be colorful. But the rapper and her designer made a last-minute change in support of Time's Up, which celebrities were honoring at the 2018 Grammys with white roses.

"We were originally working with a color but, at the last minute, we decided not to introduce any colors," designer Mohammed Ashi told The Hollywood Reporter. "We made something very theatrical and powerful in terms of the structure of the dress, so the structure will speak more loudly than the color."

The red carpet at the "Black Panther" premiere may have come in January, but the cast — including Donald Glover — made sure it was one of the most fashionable of the entire year.

Donald Glover proved that a metallic orange Dolce & Gabbana suit can work, especially on a purple carpet that isn't afraid to go bold.

The rapper's suit featured a heart with "DG" embroidered in the middle, no doubt a touching tribute to both the brand behind the suit — and the man inside it.

Angela Bassett also stunned at the premiere in a head-to-toe yellow fringe jumpsuit.

Bassett followed the "regal" dress code perfectly with this Naeem Khan jumpsuit.

Jennifer Austin, the actress' stylist, revealed that she had wanted something with a "Nubian tribal feel" for Bassett.

"I wanted her to look bold and sexy with beautiful texture," Austin told People. "I also wanted her to have movement – so this beaded yellow Naeem Khan was perfect!"

Nicole Kidman has never played it safe for the red carpet. She proved that once again with this cobalt-blue gown at the 2018 Oscars.

Kidman's strapless dress by Armani Privé featured both a gigantic bow in the middle and a sky-high slit, which she happily showed off for the cameras in her own Angelina moment.

In a year of incredibly tough competition, Blake Lively stunned at the 2018 Met Gala with a regal Versace gown that took 600 hours to make.

Lively said the custom gown was her "favorite dress ever,"and it's easy to see why. The stunning look featured a bejeweled corset, subtle sheer panels, and gorgeous embroidery that ran to the length of the long train.

If that wasn't enough, Lively was also wearing $2 million of custom Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, including a halo that featured 100 carats of champagne diamonds.

Ariana Grande wore another standout look on the night with a Vera Wang dress inspired by the Sistine Chapel.

The stunning gown featured images that grace the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, which is the official residence of the pope. It perfectly fit with that year's theme of "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."

Few could dispute that Rihanna took the crown that night (or should we say the papal tiara).

Rihanna's Maison Margiela gown took 250 hours to sew and 500 hours to hand embroider. The dress and matching jacket, which she wore with a papal tiara, also featured hundreds of pearls.

"It feels expensive, it's heavy," Rihanna said on the red carpet. "They've beaded this by hand... it would be a sin not to wear it."

And Lena Waithe made a powerful statement on the red carpet with a rainbow Pride cape.

Waithe told Vogue that she "felt like a gay goddess" in the incredible cape, which was designed by Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera.

"When I saw the cape in person, I got emotional," she added. "Not just because it was so stunning, but I knew we would be making a statement."

Lady Gaga also turned the red carpet into a powerful political moment with this oversized suit by Marc Jacobs at Elle's 25th Annual Women In Hollywood Celebration in October 2018.

During a speech at the event, Gaga revealed that she had chosen the suit to show that women "are not just objects to entertain the world."

"As a sexual assault survivor by someone in the entertainment industry, as a woman who is still not brave enough to say his name, as a woman who lives with chronic pain, as a woman who was conditioned at a very young age to listen to what men told me to do, I decided today I wanted to take the power back," she continued. "Today I wear the pants."

Jennifer Lopez may have one of the most iconic red-carpet dresses of all time, but she wasn't afraid to go against her usual style with this hot-pink princess gown in December 2018.

Lopez is known for loving body-hugging dresses, but she enveloped herself in tulle with this gorgeous Giambattista Valli couture gown.

The dress was so big that Lopez had to take a bus to the premiere of her film "Second Act" in New York City.

Jonathan Van Ness broke boundaries with this sparkling mesh dress at the 2018 Creative Arts Emmys.

The "Queer Eye" star paired the Maison Margiela dress with platform booties by Pierre Hardy.

Van Ness shared a photo of his outfit on Instagram, writing: "We absolutely came to slay this lewk & f*** a gender norm."

Sandra Oh topped the 2018 Emmys best-dressed list with this plunging red gown by Ralph & Russo.

The "Killing Eve" star also went viral that night for bringing her parents to the red carpet, where her mother sported a traditional hanbok

Timothée Chalamet caught Twitter's attention when he wore a glittering harness to the Golden Globes in 2019.

Chalamet later revealed he had no idea that his standout piece on the red carpet, which was a Louis Vuitton by Virgil Abloh creation, was a harness.

"I thought it was a bib! They told me it was a bib,"he told Ellen DeGeneres on her show. "I had a friend send me a thing that, like, sex-dungeon culture is a thing where you wear harnesses. I didn't do it for that reason."

Cardi B went vintage at the 2019 Grammys, wearing a Thierry Mugler haute couture dress from 1995.

The dress, which featured a sheer bodysuit and a dramatic ruffled skirt, made it appear as though the rapper was emerging from a shell.

Cardi B paired the look with an arrangement of pearls on her head, as well as a single pearl over her belly button.

Billy Porter said he wanted to give men the courage to "play" by wearing this Christian Siriano tuxedo gown to the 2019 Oscars.

In an essay for Vogue, Porter said that he was inspired to "push the status quo" after wearing a pink cape to the 2019 Golden Globes

"I believe men on the red carpet would love to play more," he said. "This industry masquerades itself as inclusive, but actors are afraid to play, because if they show up as something outside of the status quo, they might be received as feminine, and, as a result, they won't get that masculine job, that superhero job."

"My goal is to be a walking piece of political art every time I show up," he added. "To challenge expectations. What is masculinity? What does that mean? Women show up every day in pants, but the minute a man wears a dress, the seas part."

Gemma Chan made her mark at her very first Oscars with this dramatic pink dress by Valentino.

The "Crazy Rich Asians" star's fuchsia taffeta gown was a favorite of many, and not just because it had a pair of hidden pockets

Glenn Close's stunning gold Oscars gown weighed more than 40 pounds.

The gown, which was designed by Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera, featured three million beads that were each individually stitched into the gown in India.

Close admitted that the gown "intimidated" her, joking that "it's probably going to kill me."

Jared Leto turned heads at this year's Met Gala by bringing a replica of, well, his own head.

Leto was dressed by Alessandro Michele for Gucci, who had sent models down the runway with replicas of their own head for the label's Autumn/Winter 2018 runway show.

Michele said that the heads were meant to illustrate that "we are all Doctor Frankenstein of our lives."

Kacey Musgraves perfectly emulated the "Camp" theme at this year's Met Gala with her Barbie outfit.

Moschino helped transform Musgraves into Barbie, complete with a blonde wig and hairdryer clutch. The country star even arrived in a hot-pink convertible.

Harry Styles has become a major player in Hollywood's fashion scene, which he proved with this romantic Met Gala look.

The ensemble, which was designed by Gucci's Alessandro Michele, featured a sheer top with a big bow on the collar, as well as lace sleeves. Styles accessorized with a single pearl earring

But Billy Porter stole the show at 2019's Met Gala as he transformed into an Egyptian sun god.

Porter's incredible ensemble, which was designed by The Blonds, featured a 24-karat gold headpiece and 10-foot wings.

The "Pose" star told Vogue that he was happy to see camp come to the Met Gala.

"Camp is often used as a pejorative," he said. "What I love about having it at the Met Gala, and contextualizing camp, is it brings honor to a word and genre that can be discounted very often, or thought of as cheesy. When it's done properly, it's one of the highest forms of fashion and art."

Elle Fanning cemented her status as one to watch on the red carpet with this gorgeous ode to Old Hollywood glamour.

Fanning looked as though she was about to be whisked away by Cary Grant on the French Riviera with this Dior ensemble.

Tan France paid a loving homage to his Pakistani roots with this gorgeous embroidered kurta on the red carpet.

The ensemble, which was created by Varun Bahl Couture, gave a modern spin to the traditional South Asian outfit.

"Representing Queer Eye, QE Crew and Pakistan at the Emmy's," France wrote in a caption alongside an Instagram of the outfit.

Lizzo went viral at the 2019 American Music Awards after pairing her ruffled tangerine dress with the world's tiniest handbag.

Lizzo said the tiny white Valentino bag is just one of three in the world.

"@maisonvalentino bag big enough for my f---s to give," she wrote in the Instagram caption alongside her look.

The handbag inspired memes after Lizzo wore it, with one showing a tiny Lizzo being carried by a giant bag

  • The 2019 Miss Universepageant is being held this year at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Ahead of the pageant, some contestants gathered in Atlanta on Thursday to meet one another and complete their registration forms.
  • While there, they also participated in outfit fittings in preparation of the big night.
  • The 2019 Miss Universe pageant airs Sunday December 8 at 7 p.m. ET on FOX.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

It takes a lot of work to compete in a Miss Universe pageant.

Not only do contestants follow strict diets and exercise routines to prepare, but they also must arrive at the pageant early to get fitted for their outfits and meet their fellow participants. On Thursday, some of this year's contestants did just that when they arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, where the event is taking place.

Here are 15 behind-the-scenes photos that show them preparing for the big event.

Shanel Ifill is representing Barbados in this year's pageant.

On Thursday, she sat in the makeup chair while wearing her "Miss Barbados" sash.

Julia Horta is representing Brazil in the contest.

Ahead of the pageant, she visited Atlanta, Georgia, and got fitted for her onstage looks.

At one point, she donned an aqua-blue dress.

The dress was seemingly sparkly, though she mysteriously covered it with a semi-sheer shawl.

Contestants like Kadejah Bodden, from the Cayman Islands, had their onstage hairstyles done.

Miss Cayman Islands wore her hair in a ponytail.

Miss Egypt, whose real name is Diana Hamed, posed in a beaded dress with fringe details during her fitting.

The contestant donned a baby-pink dress with long sleeves, a plunging neckline, and beaded fringe. She also wore her "Miss Egypt" sash.

Sissie Luo from Guam smiled at her reflection in a vanity mirror for a photo.

Miss Guam wore a shiny pink dress and her sash while getting her makeup done on Thursday.

Contestant Birta Abiba Þórhallsdóttir is representing Iceland.

After arriving in Atlanta, Miss Iceland donned a white dress with gold beaded detailing.

Indonesia's Frederika Cull prepared for the pageant in her makeup chair.

While checking out her makeup, Miss Indonesia wore a red dress with white panels.

Miss Malta, or Teresa Ruglio, also got fitted for her pageant gowns on Thursday.

She tried on a semi-sheer red dress with long sleeves and studded details.

Gunzaya Bat-Erdene from Mongolia had a professional help her with her makeup.

Her makeup look included bronzed cheeks, light-pink lipstick, neutral eye shadow, and defined eyebrows.

Sharon Pieksma, or Miss Netherlands, seems ready for the 2019 pageant.

She posed for a photograph while wearing a green dress that had two triangular cutouts across the waist.

Saint Lucia representative Bebiana Mangal rocked a neon suit on Thursday.

She wore the outfit while getting her makeup done.

Miss South Africa, or Zozibini Tunzi, looked fierce as she posed in-between dresses.

During her fitting, Miss South Africa wore a sleeveless black top, high-waisted denim jeans, and a matching jacket.

Some contestants, like Miss USA and Miss Iceland, stuck together.

Both women looked stunning. Cheslie Kryst from the USA wore a sparkling jumpsuit, while Miss Iceland opted for a white minidress.

Miss USA, or Cheslie Kryst, gave fans a sneak peak at the swimsuits that will be featured in this year's show.

Based on this photograph, it's safe to say we'll see neon swimsuits during this year's show.

The 2019 Miss Universe pageant airs Sunday December 8 at 7 p.m. ET on FOX.

Airlines are joining in on Black Friday and Cyber Monday with major flight sales — here's how you can save

Delta air lines

Black Friday is perhaps the single most important day of the year for US retailers, even as Black Friday.

Last year, US retailers set a record with $6.22 billion in Black Friday business in online sales alone.

With the online component, Black Friday continues to include more than just electronics and toys. Even airlines have been jumping on board with sales and specials of their own.

So far, deals are rather sparse, but we expect more to be announced as Black Friday and Cyber Monday get closer.

We'll be updating this list as the world's airlines announce their Black Friday sales, so be sure to check back and refresh.

In the meantime, scroll down to find the best airline Black Friday and Cyber Monday flight deals of 2019.

SEE ALSO: I flew Delta's reviled 767 business class seat from Europe to New York. Here's what it was actually like.

Delta

Delta is offering a ton of Black Friday deals starting on Tuesday, November 26 (the airline is calling it "Takeoff Tuesday").

The airline is offering cut-rate sales on a ton of individual routes throughout its network, on both domestic US and international flights.

To get the best deals, book by Sunday, December 1. The travel periods depend on the route, but are generally in December, January, or February — a few include days in March and April, too.

Visit Delta's Black Friday sale page to see the routes available. Some of the best deals include:

  • New York–Amsterdam for $309 round-trip.
  • Detroit–San Jose, Costa Rica for $507 round-trip.
  • Miami–New York for $187 round-trip.
  • Los Angeles–Milan, Italy for $639 round-trip.

Delta's also offering a Black Friday deal on vacation packages. You can get up to $350 off or 35,000 bonus miles when you book a vacation package. That's in addition to the usual savings from booking a flight and hotel together as a package.

Click here to book Delta's Black Friday deals.

American Airlines

American Airlines is offering Black Friday specials on vacation packages booked through the airline.

You can already get discounts by booking your flight and hotel together as a vacation package, but the Black Friday sale offers an extra discount on top of that.

Visit American's Vacations website and use promo code "Friday2019" to see sale prices. Packages must be booked by December 11 for travel by July 31, 2020.

Click here to search Black Friday vacation deals through American Airlines.

United Airlines

United is also offering Black Friday specials on vacation packages. Save up to $600 on flight + hotel packages, including up to 74% off hotels, and get 10,000 bonus United miles on select packages.

Make sure to book by December 5 to take advantage of the sale prices.

Click here to look at United's Black Friday and Cyber Monday vacation packages.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines is offering up to 75% off round-trip flights booked on Black Friday, including up to 75% off of the flight portion of vacation packages.

The catch is that you'll have to fly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to take advantage of the deal, so that means you'll likely end up staying for a full week — no long weekend deals to be found here.

Book by December 1 at 11:59 p.m. ET for travel December 10–11, or January 14–February 11, 2020.

Use promo code "75PCT" to get the discount.

Click here to book Spirit Airlines' Black Friday deal.

Southwest

Southwest is offering a ton of low fares for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The fares currently listed must be purchased by the end of Thanksgiving Day — November 28 at 11:59 p.m. PT — but it's likely Southwest will add additional deals for Black Friday itself.

Visit the sale page and check the interactive search tool to browse options. Keep in mind that listed prices are all one-way.

Click here to browse Southwest Black Friday fares.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska is offering steep discounts on a handful of routes across its network, including flights for as low as $29 one way.

The one day sale is good for travel from January 7–March 11, 2020.

In addition to the Black Friday sale, we're expecting a separate deal for Cyber Monday.

In the meantime, take a look at the Black Friday page to see what routes are offering the discounts.

Click here to search Black Friday deals on Alaska Airlines.

British Airways

British Airways' also has a Black Friday sale on its vacation packages for US-based travelers.

You can get a round-trip flight to London and 4 nights in a hotel for as little as $579 per person. The sale is on until December 9 — book by then to lock in the best prices.

For customers based in the UK, there's an even wider selection of sales, with discounts on flights, holiday packages, and more, including both short-haul and long-haul trips. There are even some discounts on luxury holiday packages with business class flights. You'll have to book by December 3 to snag these deals, though.

Black Friday fares start at $449 round-trip in economy and $2,959 in business class.

To get the best prices, book by Saturday, November 30 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Travel dates vary depending on cabin and routing. Most economy fares are valid for travel between December 4– November 15, 2020, while most business class fares are good for travel between January 12–December 9, 2020.

Click here to shop Emirates Black Friday deals.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways is offering $150 off round-trip economy flights and $300 off business class flights — including Qatar's award-winning Q Suite seats— to a handful of destinations from the US.

Tickets must be purchased by December 1, and the discounts are valid for travel from January 11 through May 19.

Use promo code "FLYDAY" to get the discount. Visit Qatar's Black Friday page to see a full list of eligible routes.

Click here to book a Black Friday deal on Qatar Airways.

Etihad

Etihad is offering discounts on various routes across its network for Black Friday.

Many of the fares aren't the best we've seen, but there are some good deals grouped in with the rest, like Chicago to Johannesburg for $766, or Los Angeles to Nairobi for $674.

Visit the Black Friday page and browse options from your city.

Click here to search Etihad's Black Friday flight deals.

Norwegian Airlines

Save up to 30% on flights with Norwegian Air, including on short-haul and long-haul flights.

Deals include New York to Bali for $549 round-trip, Seattle to Bangkok for $549, and San Francisco to Hong Kong for $499.

Click here to see Singapore Airlines' Black Friday and Cyber Monday flight deals.

Air Italy

Book by December 2 for travel from December 5–October 24, 2020.

Click here to search Air Italy's Black Friday deals.

Aer Lingus

Aer Lingus, the Irish flag carrier, is offering up to $100 off round-trip flights  in economy from the US and Canada to Ireland and Europe, and $200 off business class for the same flights.

The airline says that the prices will be reflected in search results. Of course, because airline pricing models are incredibly complex and opaque, it's hard to tell how the discounts are being applied.

However, a few sample searches found some stellar prices, including the low $300s from New York to destinations in Ireland and the UK.

Book by December 3 for travel between January 1 and March 8, 2020.

Click here to book a Black Friday deal on Aer Lingus.

Iberia

Spanish airline Iberia is offering a wide range of discounted flights for Black Friday.

Book by December 2 to get the best prices on travel between now and March 27, 2020.

Click here to book Black Friday fares with Iberia.

Icelandair

Icelandic budget airline Wow Air may have gone bankrupt, but there are still plenty of opportunities to fly to Iceland for cheap.

Icelandair's Black Friday sale has discounts on round-trip flights to Reykjavik from all over the US. Fly from New York for about $360, from Seattle for $479, or from a handful of other cities around the country.

You can also connect through Reykjavik and fly to other destinations in Europe, depending on your origin city.

Visit the Black Friday sale page to see options from your home airport. Tickets must be booked by December 3.

Click here to browse Icelandair's Black Friday deals.

Ryanair

The European budget airline is offering different deals every day of "Cyber Week." Check back on its website every day to see the latest.

Click here to browse Ryanair's Cyber Week flight deals.

Aeromexico

Aeromexico is offering a handful of discounted flights for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Some deals are better than others — for instance, a $325 round-trip flight from New York to Mexico City is a solid deal, while an advertised $1,110 flight from Houston to Lima is far from competitive.

The best thing to do is check Aeromexico's promotion page and explore the various routes and prices to see if something works for you, and then price-compare on Google Flights.

Occasionally, you can score an incredible deal on business class — sometimes it's around the same price as coach — so make sure to search for that too. That's how I got to fly to Santiago, Chile in business class last summer, which was a fantastic experience

Click here to explore Aeromexico Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals.

Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines is also advertising a Black Friday sale, although it hasn't offered specifics on pricing or dates.

If you're interested in traveling to Hawaii, the best thing to do would be visit the Black Friday sale page and start searching for flights to see if you can find a deal.

Click here to search Hawaiian Airlines' Black Friday deals.

Air France

Instead of discounts, Air France is offering triple miles for its Flying Blue frequent flyer members on round-trip flights between the US and Paris.

Book from now until December 2, and travel between December 7 and March 31, 2020 to take advantage of the deal.

Click here to book Air France flights as part of the triple miles promotion.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

KLM — which is co-owned with Air France by the larger Air France-KLM group — is offering a similar promotion for Flying Blue frequent flyer members.

Earn triple Flying Blue miles on round-trip flights from the US and Amsterdam when you book by December 2, and travel between December 7 and March 31, 2020.

Click here to book KLM flights as part of the triple miles promotion.

La Compagnie

La Compagnie, a boutique all-business class French airline, is offering a pre-Black Friday sale.

Fly round-trip between Paris and New York in business class for just $1,000 if you book by November 26 — although the deal was supposed to end, the promo page is still live, so it's definitely worth checking to see if you can still snag a great price. The fares are valid on travel between now and April 30, subject to availability.

La Compagnie often offers competitive business class fares, but it's rare to see them go below $1,500.

Click here to book La Compagnie flights for $1,000 round-trip.

Check back here for more deals!

We expect a ton of airlines to announce their Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals over the next few days as Thanksgiving draws closer.

Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines have both teased their Black Friday sales, and more airlines will in the next few days.

Be sure to bookmark this page and check back — we'll be updating it constantly as new deals are announced!

The 8 most overhyped TV shows of the year

Miley Cyrus in Black Mirror Netflix

This year brought many fantastic seasons of television beloved by critics and audiences alike. But not every show was a hit. We've gathered up a list of the 2019 shows that people were most excited for and then let down by, along with other series heavily promoted by networks and streaming services that fell flat.

Keep reading to see the most overhyped shows of 2019.

"Big Little Lies" season two was an unnecessary addition to what many considered a perfect first season of TV.

Oscar-winning legend Meryl Streep made the rare move of joining a television project for the second season of "Big Little Lies," and people were equal parts thrilled and excited to see her joining the already incredible ensemble.

Unfortunately, the new episodes didn't add enough to the overall story and instead wound up being disappointing.

The New Yorker writer Doreen St. Félix wrote about the "disappointing, Emmy-baiting" season two finale, saying the entire season "probably should not have been made, or, rather, recycled from the first."

"The Case Against Adnan Syed" was another overblown HBO series that came out this year.

Perhaps the true crime documentary is simply oversaturated these days, but "The Case Against Adnan Syed" failed to captivate the world's attention in the way the original examination of this unsolved crime did with the "Serial" podcast.

Though well-received by critics, the documentary fell flat for audiences who might have been hoping to see new evidence uncovered about the heart-wrenching case. The real-world effects didn't work out as hoped, either, since the Supreme Court recently rejected Syed's request for a new trial.

"13 Reasons Why" season three was an unmitigated disaster.

With a tanking reputation among critics and Netflix subscribers alike, this drama series just seems to get worse with each season. The new episodes were marketed with an attempt to engage the audience with a mystery ("Who killed Bryce Walker?") that no one really cared about.

Then, by the time the new season arrived on Netflix, it was clear how little people desired to see more tangled stories set in this particularly awful fictional high school. Jen Chaney of Vulture wrote an article that pretty much sums it up: "13 Reasons Why I Couldn't Stand 13 Reasons Why Season 3."

The series finale of "Game of Thrones" was the most anticipated television event of the decade, and wound up being far more contentious than people were expecting.

Your mileage may vary with how successful you believe the final season of "Game of Thrones" was, but no one can deny the overwhelming negativity in the fandom surrounding those final six episodes.

Perhaps expectations were too high heading in, or maybe it was just the inevitable conclusion for a show that had long outpaced its complex source material, but "Game of Thrones" didn't go out on the high note many people had hoped for.

"Modern Love" was supposed to be a heartwarming anthology series, but it left many feeling ice cold.

This new Amazon series was billed as an endearing and inspiring show, based on real stories found in the New York Times column of the same name. With a star-studded cast including Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel, Tina Fey, Andrew Scott, Andy García, and more, we expected riveting storytelling.

Instead, the love stories were shallow and trite at best, and uncomfortable and creepy at worst.

"Carnival Row" is another show with lots of promise that wound up falling flat.

Starring Cara Delevingne and Orlando Bloom, this Amazon original fantasy show fell into an unfortunate valley between campy and fun and serious and gritty. The characters names (like Rycroft Philostrate and Vignette Stonemoss) and attempt at fantasy world-building added up to a muddled mess instead of a compelling take on the genre.

The newest season "Black Mirror" was the worst-reviewed one yet.

This dystopian anthology series has been beloved by audiences since its introduction on the UK's Channel 4 in 2011. When Netflix took over, the popularity of "Black Mirror" only grew.

But this year's installment showed that not ever season can be a winner. It's the worst-rated among critics so far, and barely made a dent in cultural conversations over the summer.

"The Morning Show" was supposed to be Apple TV's big audience draw, but it failed to make waves.

Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell are incredible movie and TV stars in their own right, but no amount of star power could overcome what was ultimately seen as an uninterestingly told story.

"The Morning Show" delves into the very topical issue of workplace sexual harassment and assault, but somehow managed to craft a very tepid narrative. Instead of drawing in millions of subscribers for Apple TV, "The Morning Show" seems to have already come and gone.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: Your favorite '90s pop stars

britney spears then and now_edited 1

The '90s was a huge decade for music, with singers like Britney Spears and Mariah Carey, as well as boy bands like NSYNC, becoming household names.

The decade also launched the careers of stars like Jennifer Lopez, Mandy Moore, and Christina Aguilera — singers who are still doing exciting things even after the 90s heyday.

See what some of the biggest names in '90s pop music are up to today.

Britney Spears rose to fame in the late 1990s.

After the release of her debut single "...Baby One More Time" in 1998, as well as her debut album in 1999, Spears instantly became a pop superstar. The music video for "...Baby One More Time," which features the singer dressed as a Catholic schoolgirl, is one of the most iconic music videos from the '90s.

And even though Spears would go on to release several more successful albums in the 2000s, her iconic career definitely began in the 1990s.

Despite a rocky past few years, Spears is still making music and headlining shows.

Spears has remained in the spotlight for most of the 2000s, undergoing a public divorce and custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline, as well as a struggle with her mental illness. The singer has headlined tours and Las Vegas residencies as recently as 2018, but the past few months, fans have grown worried again about her mental state, even starting a social media movement called #FreeBritney that aims to remove her from the control of her father

Spears has denied the conspiracy theories, saying speculation about her life has "gotten out of control."

Jennifer Lopez got her big break when she starred in the 1997 movie "Selena," about the murdered Chicana singer.

The singer, actress, and dancer got her start dancing in music videos, like Janet Jackson's 1993 video for "That's The Way Love Goes." Lopez also appeared on the popular sketch show "In Living Color" as a dancer, but really got her big break playing Tejana singer Selena in the 1997 biopic.

She dropped her debut album, "On the 6," in 1999. Much like Spears, Lopez's debut single "If You Had My Love" became an instant hit, and made the singer a household name.

Lopez has kept busy in recent years, appearing in films like "Hustlers."

In recent years, Lopez has released several new singles, appeared on shows like "Shades of Blue" and in films like "Hustlers," and even headlined a tour in honor of her 50th birthday this year.

Lopez has two children with her ex-husband Marc Anthony, and will co-headline the 2020 Superbowl with Shakira. The singer and actress also has several film and television projects in the works.

Mariah Carey released her debut album in 1990.

Carey achieved mainstream success in the 1990s following the successful release of her debut album. She recorded and released seven albums through the '90s, including her hit Christmas album "Merry Christmas," which featured the iconic single "All I Want for Christmas Is You."

The singer has received numerous awards and honors throughout her impressive career.

Despite a public separation from her ex-husband Nick Cannon, as well as a struggle with mental illness, Carey's career is still going strong. In 2018, she released a critically-acclaimed album called "Caution," and subsequently embarked on a world tour. The singer will also go on tour in support of the 2019 re-release of "Merry Christmas."

Boy bands like the Backstreet Boys were big in the '90s.

Backstreet Boys released their first self-titled album in 1996, but it was their second album, 1997's "Backstreet's Back," that truly made them pop icons. Featuring singles like "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," the album sold millions of copies and made the group a household name.

In 1999, the Backstreet Boys released "Millennium," which included instant hits like "Larger Than Life" and "I Want It That Way." Following the album release, the band embarked on a world tour, and broke sales records in numerous cities.

Despite losing some momentum in the mid-2000s, the Backstreet Boys have been active in recent years.

The band released their ninth studio album, "DNA," on January 25 of this year, and subsequently embarked on a world tour to support it. They've also headlined a Las Vegas residency, recorded several albums, and even released an exhibit at the Grammy museum in recent years.

NSYNC was another iconic boy band from the '90s.

The group was one of the biggest names in '90s pop, thanks in part to their eye-catching style, catchy singles, and synchronized dance moves. NSYNC released their self-titled debut album in 1997, and it became an instant hit in Europe.

They went on to release two more albums in the '90s (1998's "'NSYNC," and "Home for Christmas," released that same year) and subsequently became a success in the US, too. The boy band would continue to find pop success in the early 2000s with singles like "It's Gonna Be Me."

Several band members have gone on to have successful careers.

Even though the group officially disbanded in 2007, several members, including Justin Timberlake, have gone on to have lucrative solo careers. Timberlake has released several successful albums under his own name, and headlined numerous tours and shows, including the Superbowl halftime show in 2018.

And NSYNC famously reunited for Ariana Grande's set at Coachella earlier this year, performing several of the singer's hits during her set.

Christina Aguilera became a star with the release of her 1999 single "Genie in a Bottle."

The single quickly catapulted Aguilera to pop stardom, and her eponymous debut album, released that same year, peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Aguilera was even recognized as best new artist at the 42nd annual Grammy Awards, and would go on to enjoy success throughout most of the 2000s.

Aguilera released her latest album in 2018.

Following her success in the '90s, Aguilera released numerous albums and even appeared in several films and television shows.

More recently, Aguilera has headlined a Vegas residency, appeared as a judge on several seasons of NBC's "The Voice," and voiced a character in "The Emoji Movie."

Brandy released a successful album and played the role of Cinderella in the '90s.

Following the release of her 1993 self-titled album, Brandy received several Grammy nominations, and even opened for Boyz II Men on their 1995 tour. And at the height of her '90s fame, Brandy was hand-picked by Whitney Houston to play Cinderella in a multicultural adaptation that Houston was producing.

Brandy released her second album in 1998, and went on to star in several major films, including "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer."

In recent years, Brandy has appeared on Broadway and on television shows.

After taking several hiatuses from music throughout the last decade, Brandy released her latest single in June of this year.

The singer also appeared in a Broadway production of "Chicago" in 2015, and is expected to release her new album sometime in the next year.

Mandy Moore started her career as a pop star.

Moore released her first single, "Candy," in 1999, and subsequently toured with the Backstreet Boys in support of her upcoming album, "So Real," which was released in December of that year.

Even though the album wasn't an instant commercial success, it led to increased recognition for Moore, and was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA.

She now has a starring role on the hit NBC show "This Is Us."

Following her pop stardom in the late '90s, Moore turned her focus to acting, and appeared in a variety of films and TV shows.

Some of her more notable roles included the voice of Rapunzel in the 2010 Disney film "Tangled," as well as her role as Rebecca on the hit NBC show "This Is Us."

  1. Whirlpool Front Control Stainless Steel Dishwasher, $328 (originally $579) [You save $251] Fellow Home Depot shoppers love this dishwasher, which is currently more than 40% off. A notable feature that nearly everyone mentions is how quiet it is (55 dBA), so you can run the dishwasher at any time of the night without disturbing anyone. It also features an efficient one-hour wash cycle and a smart soil sensor that can adjust the cycle based on how dirty your dishes are.
  2. GE 1.7 cu. ft. Over the Range Microwave, $218 (originally $399) [You save $181] The sleek and compact microwave comes in six finishes, though you might want to get one of the lighter colors to read the control panel more easily. The special "melt" feature lets you melt delicate ingredients like butter and chocolate without making a mess, and you have the option to activate or deactivate the turntable. Other settings you can adjust include light brightness, fan speed, and beeper volume.
  3. Maytag 5.3 cu. ft. High-Efficiency White Top Load Washing Machine, $648 (originally $999) [You save $351] This washing machine can involve a bit of a learning curve since it offers so many settings, but the payoff is worth it. 4. Samsung Stainless Steel Package, $3,122 (originally $5,006) [You save $1,884] Replace your kitchen appliances in one go with this package. The high-tech fridge is WiFi and Bixby-enabled so you can monitor its temperature from anywhere.
  5. Dyson Ball Total Clean Vacuum, $289 (originally $624) [You save $335] Dyson's cordless stick vacuum designs (and prices) aren't for everyone, but if you know you're interested in them, now is the time to buy. The ball part of this vacuum increases stability and control, though the trade-off is that the vacuum is slightly heavier than other models. In typical Dyson fashion, it's powerful, thorough, and clean — the HEPA filtration traps allergens and bacteria inside the vacuum.
  6. Werner 5-in-1 Telescoping Aluminum Multi-Position Ladder, $119 (originally $239) [You save $120] The ladder boasts 33 adjustable working heights and positions that can turn it into one of five different configurations: twin step ladder, stairway step ladder, extension ladder, wall ladder, and scaffold base. Regardless of the configuration, you should feel safe using it — it has a 375-pound load capacity, slip-resistant feet, and a flared bottom for extra support.
  7. Milwaukee M18 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Combo Tool Kit, $549 (originally $917) [You save $368] Buying combo tool kits is a great way to save money in general, but especially when the kits themselves go on sale. The circ saw and drivers in this kit run on lithium-ion batteries (there are two included), which are rechargable. If one dies while you're in the middle of a project, you can connect the other one without skipping a beat. The kit also contains a bonus wet/dry vacuum for keeping dust and sod under control. Today only, it's 40% off, making the decision to invest in a powerful and versatile kit much easier.

Even business icons need a break.

Apple's legendary former chief design officer Jony Ive looks to have left Apple for good after his profile disappeared from Apple's leadership page this week.

Since his departure was first announced, it looks like he's been having fun.

Ive formed one of the most fruitful business and tech partnerships ever seen with the late Steve Jobs, playing an instrumental role in the design of the iPhone, iPod and iPad. His relentless productivity continued well into the Tim Cook era, and he was key to the development of the Apple Watch.

But his departure from Apple was announced in June and was slated to take place "later this year."  Ive said he planned to start his own design firm, LoveFrom, with Apple as one of its clients.

In the months since, Ive has been spotted mingling with numerous creatives and celebrities around his home country of England. Here, Business Insider takes a glance at what he's been up to.

Jony Ive is the designer behind Apple's most iconic products of recent times

Ive, just as much as late Apple cofounder Steve Jobs, was the driving force behind products such iPhone, iPod and iPad

While studying design at Newcastle Polytechnic in the northeast of England, he had an epiphany while designing on an Apple Mac.

"I discovered the Mac and felt I had a connection with the people who were making this product. I suddenly understood what a company was, or was supposed to be."

And he continued to exert influence after Tim Cook took over the top job, although he reportedly became disaffected with Apple's direction under Cook

Though Ive's day-to-day involvement with Apple reportedly lessened after the Apple Watch launched, Ive still helped shape Apple's product design well into the post-Steve Jobs era. He was a key figure behind the Watch's design, but reportedly felt that Tim Cook wasn't as interested in design as Jobs (a report Cook called "absurd").

In June, Ive dropped the bombshell that he was leaving Apple

Apple first announced Ive's departure in June, saying he wanted to form an independent design company with Apple among its primary clients." Though few specifics are known about the company as yet, it is set  will be called LoveFrom, and launch in 2020, according to a June interview Ive gave to the Financial Times.

The announcement led to Apple restructuring its design team, and talk of 'the end of an era' at Apple

Ive's departure left a gaping hole in Apple's C-suite, not to mention massive shoes to fill. Jeff Williams was chosen as Jony Ive's successor at Apple, and led the development of the Apple Watch. The multitalented engineer is also leading many of Apple's healthcare initiatives, and currently serves as the tech giant's chief operating officer.

Soon after his departure announcement, Ive said he wanted to start his own design firm – the name of which was inspired by Jobs

Ive and Steve Jobs were known to be friends as well as collaborators.

Ive has said the name of his new firm, LoveFrom, was inspired by a conversation he had with Jobs.

According to Ive, Jobs [said] that one of the fundamental motivations was that when you make something with love and with care, even though you probably will never meet . . . the people that you're making it for, and you'll never shake their hand, by making something with care, you are expressing your gratitude to humanity, to the species."

Since announcing his departure, it looks like Ive has been hobnobbing at cool creative events in the UK

Here he is with fashion designer Paul Smith at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Here he is in October 2019 at the unveiling of his own portrait at London's National Portrait Gallery

The shot was taken by renowned German photographer Andreas Gursky.

Ive is that rare breed of creative so successful that other creatives make him the focus of their work. In this case, Ive was the subject of a sleek portrait photo by Gurksy, who snapped Ive at Apple's Cupertino headquarters.

Ive is pictured alongside Gursky at the portrait's launch in October at the National Portrait Gallery.

Here's a closer look at the portrait, which shows Ive at Apple Park, the firm's new Cupertino headquarters

The campus, also nicknamed "the spaceship", was designed by Ive in collaboration with the architect Norman Foster.

Celebs and creatives attended to hang out with Ive

As did fellow European creative, Fabien Baron

Arguably, Fabien Baron is to art direction what Ive is to hardware design. The Frenchman, – pictured alongside Ive at the MATCHESFASHION x Fabien Baron x Phaidon Book launch in October – has directed ads, created perfumes and even designed magazines. Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Harper's Bazaar and Italian Vogue are just a smattering of his sartorial clients.

Earlier in the summer, Ive attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a show for classic cars in Sussex, UK

The motor racing festival was held at the iconic Goodwood estate in Chichester, England in July. The sprawling estate is located near the eponymous Goodwood Circuit, a historic British motor racing venue for both cars and motorbikes.

Ive is often known to attend the festival.

Ive was a judge at Goodwood 2019, for Cartier's 'Style et Luxe' competition of rare vintage cars

Though he once said he doesn't see his work as art, Ive's attendance at the Royal College of Art's Chancellor's Circle Dinner in London last July was hardly surprising for someone so aesthetics-oriented. According to the New Yorker, Steve Jobs's widow Laurene Powell Jobs once called Ive "an artist with an artist's temperament."

Here he is in complementary pastel colors alongside fellow designer Marc Newson

For all he's sampled British high society the past few months, good old design work is still Ive's priority

As well as setting up LoveFrom with Newson (above, left) Ive also told the FT back in June that he hoped to stay "very involved" in Apple's product development for "many, many years to come." Whatever Ive's box of tricks contains next, it'll surely have the hand of Apple written all over it.

Your ultimate guide to budgeting, spending, and paying off debt during the holiday season

  • Holiday spending shouldn't put you into debt or cause you stress — budgeting can help make sure that you don't spend too much.
  • Be sure to include all holiday-related expenses in your budget and look out for signs that you're spending too much.
  • There are countless activities that don't involve money but still allow you to make the most of the holiday season, from building an igloo with your kids to serving at a soup kitchen.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

'Tis the season to be merry. And spend money — a lot of money, according to the National Retail Federation. This year, consumers are expected to spend as much as $730 billion during the holidays, an increase of around 4% from 2018.

We get it — during the holidays you travel more, you shop more, you host more, you decorate more, and you eat more. All of which can add up to your budget taking a direct hit from Santa's sleigh.

But what is a reasonable amount to spend during the holidays? And what are the best ways to keep your budget in check and know when you're spending too much?

Spend what your budget allows for the holidays

Some financial experts say that 1% of your income is an acceptable amount for holiday spending. But considering that some people may have more discretionary funds than others, it's hard to put an exact percentage on what your holiday spending should be.

"It's best if you think hard about what amount of holiday spending is appropriate for you," said Jesse Mecham, creator and founder of the YNAB app. Look at your budget, determine an amount that works for you, and decide what amount you want to spend, he said.

Another approach is thinking about your holiday spending all year long— or at least thinking about it enough to set aside money for it throughout the year. "I suggest that people save for the holidays all year long," said smart shopping expert Trae Bodge.

Base the amount you need to save on a list of recipients and how much you typically spend per recipient. Compare this amount to how much you can afford to sock away each week or month, based on your budget, Bodge said. "If you can afford $10 per week, that gives you almost $500 to spend on holiday gifts," she said.

Include all holiday-related expenses in your budget

Be sure to include all the other holiday-related expenses in your budget such as decorating, dining out, and travel expenses in addition to gift purchasing.

If you decorate for the holidays, you'll want to factor this into your budget as well, said Bodge. But keeping the cost down in this area is certainly doable.

"I always recommend that people buy things that they can re-use year after year," she said. Decor should not be a big, recurring expense each year. And if it is, and it's putting pressure on your budget, it's time to scale back. "You certainly don't have to have as many lights as your neighbors," she said.

Signs that you're spending too much

Going all out for holidays is fun, but not if you have to pay down debt for years to come. You shouldn't spend any amount that will become a financial burden to you, said financial planner Bobbi Rebell, host of the Financial Grownup Podcast and cohost of the "Money with Friends" podcast.

"If your holiday spending impacts your ability to pay for other priorities, like your debt, or your regular bills — and yes, your savings and investments — then you're spending too much," Rebell said.

Essentially, if you're carrying debt from your holiday purchases into the new year, then you're spending too much, Bodge explained. If this happens, you'll want to work to pay that off as quickly as possible and then make the necessary tweaks to avoid that in the following year, she said.

"For example, if you exchanged gifts with all your siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and parents, suggest drawing names or just agree that only the kids receive gifts," she said. You might even be surprised that many of your family members will be relieved that you suggested it!

Also, keep in mind that something as feeling bad about your spending may be one of the best ways to know if you're overdoing it, offered Mecham. If you're hitting your other financial goals and not in debt (or at least paying it off in a reasonable rate), then spending $300 shouldn't make you feel bad, he said.

If you're paying down debt during the holidays ...

The amount you have to spend on holiday purchases may be small, and this is perfectly fine, especially if you are paying down debt this year.

"It's important to keep in mind that few people would feel good about receiving a gift that was a financial stretch for the giver," said Rebell. After all, it truly is the thought that counts, not the size of the gift.

"If you are in debt to the point where you are falling behind on your monthly payments, it's time to ask for a break over the holidays so you can catch up," said Bodge. Your family and friends will understand. And don't forget that if someone asks you what you want for the holidays, it's perfectly acceptable to ask them for a contribution toward your student loans or credit card debt instead of a gift, said Bodge.

Plan ahead for next year

In January, set aside 20 to 30 minutes to reflect on your holiday spending in 2019, then decide on your budget for the upcoming year, said Mecham. This is the time when you decide if you will spend the same amount, or less or more.

"If you set aside time to think about it for a moment, then you'll know all year long that you've got the Christmas bill coming up," he said. This is certainly a better option than paying the holidays down on a credit card for the next three (or more!) years.

Consider alternatives to spending

There are countless activities that don't involve money but still allow you to make the most of the holiday season.

"Go build an igloo with your kids," suggested Mecham. Or consider serving at a soup kitchen or shelter this year with extended family or friends in place of giving gifts. "Serving together is certainly more rewarding than walking through a mall," he said.

If you think about the things that you are good at, such as assembling furniture, gardening, or babysitting, then you can offer your time or services to others instead of purchasing gifts, said Bodge.

"Or if you really want to give something, bake, make jam, or hand-make something," she said. Corporations may have convinced us that the holiday season is really the season of spending, but we all need to remember that it's really the season for giving, whatever that gift — big or small — may be.

A Cleveland millennial says a loan from Square helped power her cupcake shop to over $500,000 in sales. Here's how to secure the payment processor loans that business owners say are way easier than borrowing from traditional banks.

  • Payment processors such as PayPal, Square, and Stripe offer loans to small businesses that can range from $500 to over $250,000.
  • These loans are typically based on the sales a business makes through the payment processor, so they're often easier to get than traditional bank loans.
  • Cupcake shop owner Kelly Kandah started her bakery with personal savings but said she wasn't able to expand as quickly until she started using loans through Square.
  • Here's how she did it and how small business owners can apply for similar loans.

When Kelly Kandah started her first cupcake shop, Colossal Cupcakes, she hadn't fully realized what she'd gotten herself into. Until she saw the line out her door on opening day.

Kandah, 33, said she knew cupcakes were having a moment, based on all the shops she'd seen popping up in New York City, where she lived for a year. But she hadn't prepared for such high demand in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.

She had a couple KitchenAid mixers to start, but didn't have the $10,000 commercial-grade mixers she needed. Meanwhile, her low-tech cash register kept customers waiting in line too long.

"I had to really quickly turn this dream or vision of a cute little bakery into a mass production cupcake factory," Kandah told Business Insider.

The key to this, she said, was securing the right loan at the right time — and not from a traditional bank.

How the cupcakes went Colossal

Kandah opened her bakery in March 2012 with $6,000 in personal savings and in hindsight, she said, that was a mistake. She needed a lot more cash to grow, but didn't have the credit history to get a traditional bank loan. "As you're putting money back into your business, it was just hard to really get ahead," she said.

When she swapped her register for a Square system, she learned that she could get loans to fund her expansion through Square Capital. Four years after opening, she used her first loan of $6,000 towards a soft-serve ice cream machine to more efficiently make her popular "cake shakes," which blend a cupcake into a milkshake.

She instantly saw an uptick in customers and sales. "My sales went up so much from those shakes, people not having a wait time anymore, being able to just pump ice cream out and make these things," she said. Kandah paid off the loan within six months, which was sooner than the estimated 18 months Square had given her.

In total, Kandah took out five loans through Square Capital and paid off each one within seven months or less. She liked that it was an automatic repayment, since Square takes a percent of daily sales until the loan is paid back in full, which she estimated was about 8% for her first loan.

Colossal Cupcakes now has two locations, with a third opening in March 2020. The business has grown from $170,000 in sales in its first year to over half a million this year.

"I was able to grow faster, sooner and not have to also personally struggle to be able to get those things in such a long amount of time," Kandah said.

The power of the payment processor loan — and how to use it

PayPal, Square, and Stripe service payments for millions of small businesses every day, so they're within close proximity to business owners' pain points. At the top of that list is getting the capital to scale and expand.

These payment processors give their clients loans based primarily on sales. Since credit history isn't factored as heavily, if at all, it's often easier to get accepted for these loans compared to traditional bank loans.

After the financial crisis of 2008, traditional banks slowed lending to small business owners, creating a gap in funding resources that payment processors were eager to fill. This new type of loan provides cash quickly and repayment is usually flexible.

Since these loans are easier to access and have fewer requirements, they can be a good resource for mid-stage businesses that have at least $3,000 in monthly sales. At this point, a business has a steady sales volume, but needs more funding to hit its next milestone.

For small business owners who already use these payment processors, getting loans through Square, PayPal, or Stripe can be a simple process. Here's what you need to know about these loans and how to apply for one.

How to work with Square Capital, which offers repayment based on sales

If you use Square as your payment processor, either for retail or e-commerce, the company offers funding through Square Capital, which it first launched in 2014 as a cash advance program. Loans range from $500 to $250,000 and can be deposited in as little as one business day.

Business owners can see if they're eligible for a loan directly on their Square dashboard.  Eligibility is primarily based on number of sales coming through the platform, not credit score. In general, the more sales your business makes, the more money you'll be approved to loan.

Repayment is flexible and based on daily sales. On a slower week, you'll pay back less, and on a busier week, you'll pay back more.

How to work with PayPal, which offers 3 types of funding

PayPal began offering loans in 2013, after hearing from its sellers who had trouble securing traditional bank loans following the 2008 financial crisis.

If Paypal is your payment processor, the company offers two different options: PayPal working capital and PayPal business loans. The main differences between the two are repayment terms. PayPal working capital takes a percent of daily sales, ranging from 5% to 30%, selected by the business owner. PayPal business loans are automatically paid back at a weekly fixed amount.

To be eligible for working capital, a business must be at least three months old and process at least $15,000 in annual PayPal sales. Similar to Square Capital, there's no credit check, since the application is based on payment processing history.

To get a business loan through PayPal, a business needs to make at least $42,000 in annual revenue and the application does require a credit check.

Additionally, businesses that do not use PayPal can apply for a PayPal service called LoanBuilder, which offers loans from $5,000 up to $500,000 and requires a credit check.

How to work with Stripe, which partners with Funding Circle for bigger loans

Stripe is one of the latest companies to offer loans to its clients, launching Stripe Capital in September 2019. The company doesn't have a set range for its loans, but says they typically go from $5,000 to $20,000.

Stripe Capital works similar to Square Capital — eligibility is determined solely on sales volume through the processor, not credit. Repayment is also based on daily sales, automatically deducting a percent of total sales until the loan is paid off.

Stripe also partners with Funding Circle, a peer-to-peer lending company. Any small business owner can apply for a loan through Funding Circle, but Stripe expedites the application process for its clients by copying over their sales history. A minimum credit score of 620 is required. Loans for Stripe clients go up to $25,000, but Funding Circle independently offers loans from $25,000 to $500,000.
