stocking stuffers ideas

  • If the holidays are the season for giving, then stocking stuffers are the affordable, easy-to-buy gifts you can give to everyone in your life, from your neighbors to your distant cousin twice removed.
  • Even if your gift costs $10 or less, it can still be useful, thoughtful, and unique.
  • Check out all of our holiday gift guides for 2019.

Not everyone in your life, like your friendly neighborhood mailman or the kid cousins you only see once a year, is going to receive a fancy gift from you during the holidays. However, it's always a nice gesture to give them a small token of love and appreciation and show that you're thinking of them.

Before you tackle the big-ticket gift purchases on your list for your mom, dad, or significant other, it's easier to start small with the stocking stuffers you can buy by the armful. Under $10 is just about as affordable as you can get with gifts, but this low price point doesn't mean your stocking stuffers can't still be useful, thoughtful, and unique.

The 5 best stocking stuffers under $10:

  1. A hydrating lip balm from Jack Black
  2. A stylish and reusable shopping bag from Baggu
  3. A 6-foot-long lightning cable from Anker that works on iPhones, iPods, and iPads
  4. Indulgent gourmet caramels covered in dark chocolate from Paper Source
  5. High-quality, matte prints of your favorite memories together from Artifact Uprising

WASHINGTON — The US Navy's top officer released his first planning guidance Wednesday, the first major document released since ascending to the office earlier this year.

The guidance from Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday retained the "A Design for Maintaining Maritime Superiority"moniker from the previous CNO, Adm. John Richardson, though it is shorter and more streamlined than the previous design.

Eschewing the color-coded "lines of effort" in Richardson's design, Gilday breaks down his version into three subheads: "Warfighting,""Warfighters" and "Future Navy."

Here are five takeaways from the document:

1) Readiness is king.

The first priority listed under the "Warfighting" subhead is to improve ship maintenance and modernization.

"As we have learned over the past decade, it is cheaper to maintain readiness than to buy it back," Gilday writes. "Our toughest near-term challenge is reversing the trend of delivering only 40% of our ships from maintenance on time.

"As the fleet ages, we must continue to invest deliberately to modernize our weapons, sensors, and platforms to outpace adversary trends."

Gilday's guidance includes an order to Naval Sea Systems Command to develop a plan and report back to him in 60 days with ways to improve and sustain the maintenance industrial base, and to target an 80% reduction in days lost to depot maintenance extensions in 2020.

The Navy's deployment plan, the Optimized Fleet Response Plan, which governs the entire life cycle of a ship and its crew, is also in the crosshairs. The guidance orders Fleet Forces Command to makes sure the plan provides enough time in maintenance, provides adequate forces to meet the deployment requirements and reserves enough readiness to respond to a crisis. Fleet Forces must respond by January.

2) Ambitious war-fighting goals.

The guidance spends much of its time dwelling on ambitious goals, such as connecting the Navy's assets on a fleet tactical grid that will allow the force to operate in a more distributed manner over a larger area. The concepts will be proved out in large-scale exercises, which the Navy will execute annually, the guidance adds.

"These exercises and experiments will inform doctrine and tactics; future fleet headquarters requirements, capacity, and size; and investments in future platforms and capabilities," Gilday writes. "As we develop our plans for future [large-scale exercises], we will leverage experience from Combatant Command, Joint, and other service exercises to better prepare the Navy to integrate, support, and lead the Joint Force in a future fight."

The concept also call for a heavier emphasis on space, cyber and electronic warfare, as well as integrating more special operations into the way the Navy fights.

3) More advanced training.

The guidance goes into some detail on the kinds of training the Navy should pursue, including more live-virtual constructive training, which uses computer simulations to integrate synthetic tracks into real-time sensors to give operators a more lifelike experience in training.

The guidance also calls for a continued push toward what the Navy terms as "ready, relevant learning," or using more technology to get sailors trained faster with the skills they need right away, and eschewing extras that may not be part of their everyday job.

It also calls on integrating more training on decision-making science into leadership development.

"Improved decision-making — from the deckplates to the Flag Bridge — is a decisive advantage in stressful conditions, particularly during combat," Gilday writes. "Further, the quality of decision-making by our leaders enables successful mission command."

4. Sub-loving SWO.

If surface warfare officers thought the SWO CNO would back off on the recent emphasis on undersea warfare, they were wrong. The first two priorities under "Future Navy" are to field the Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine and to "maintain mastery of the undersea domain." Listed third is to maintain strong forward presence with the carrier fleet.

The guidance continues that the Navy must continue to invest in longer-range precision strike capabilities, and do so through an integrated approach alongside the Marine Corps.

And, in short, the Navy must be oriented toward offense, a shift away from the defensive posture taken post Cold War, which focused on protecting the carrier as the main strike weapon.

"We will have an offensive capability from first contact," Gilday writes. "We will re-examine our force structure and 30-year shipbuilding plans through continuous, integrated assessment with the Marine Corps to define and develop the platforms — both manned and unmanned — needed to provide overwhelming fires to fleet commanders. These capabilities will establish maritime superiority when and where needed."

5. Cheaper is a must.

The focus on fielding cheaper ways to defend ships is nonnegotiable, Gilday writes, meaning that he will continue to push toward directed energy and electronic warfare as a means of bringing down the cost.

"We have developed exquisite defensive capabilities that have a very high cost-per-shot, designed to defeat threats with a very low cost-per-shot," Gilday writes. "In an era of constrained budgets and facing competitors with similarly sized economies, and with the low barriers to entry presented by rapid technological development, we must be exceptionally disciplined in allocating resources to improve the offensive power and defensive strength of the fleet."

More than 1,000 CEOs stepped down during the first three quarters of 2019, according to a report published by the staffing firm Challenger, Gray, & Christmas— 1,160 executives, to be exact.

Departures in the first nine months of this year exceeded the number of CEOs who stepped down during the first three quarters of 2008 (1,132), which was the height of the Great Recession. This is also the year with the highest CEO turnover in the first three quarters that Challenger, Gray, & Christmas has seen since the firm began tracking departures in 2002.

The tech sector has the second-highest number of CEO departures, at 154, including the high-profile departures of Adam Neumann from WeWork and Kevin Burns from Juul.

On October 22, the heads of Under Armour and Nike announced within hours of each other that they were stepping down. On November 1, the McDonald's board voted to fire CEO Steve Easterbrook over his relationship with an employee. Gap CEO Art Peck stepped down on November 7 after 15 years at the company.

SoulCycle CEO Melanie Whelan resigned from the company on November 26, which a spokesperson told Business Insider was a "mutual agreement" between the board of SoulCycle and Whelan. Whelan originally joined the company in 2012 as its COO and rose to CEO in 2015.

The first week of December has already seen several major CEO exits.

On Tuesday, Google cofounder Larry Page stepped down as CEO of Alphabet. Page is being succeeded by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Page will remain on Alphabet's board of directors. On Wednesday, Expedia CEO Mark Okerstrom — who had succeeded former CEO Dara Khosrowshahi as the company's top executive in 2017 — stepped down

On Thursday, United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz announced he would be stepping down as CEO in May 2020 and assuming the role of chairman of the board. That same day, Susan Desmond-Hellmann announced she would be stepping down as CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Of the CEOs who left their positions during the first three quarters, 438 remained at their respective companies in different roles, 292 retired, and 103 moved to other companies, according to the report, which listed several other reasons for departures as well.

Here are the 35 most noteworthy CEO departures of 2019 thus far:

6 lessons modern men can learn from watching 'Sex and the City,' according to podcasters The Bradshaw Boys

  • When the HBO series "Sex and the City" first hit television screens over 20 years ago, fans couldn't stop talking about the groundbreaking show — and the conversation continues into 2019.
  • From the out-of-the-box fashion to relationship problems, much of the series still speaks to viewers.
  • Among its newer viewers are podcasters "The Bradshaw Boys"— three men who may not necessarily be the target audience of "Sex and the City," but nevertheless have a lot to say about what makes the show so powerful.
  • From being able to embrace a higher level of vulnerability to relationship tips, here are 6 things every modern man can take away from "Sex and the City."
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

If you've ever seen a single episode of "Sex and the City," you would know that while some elements of the show are painfully dated, others continue to resonate today.

As we approach the next decade, the groundbreaking show is seeing a resurgence in pop culture and on social media, with Instagram stars like Dan Clay aka Carrie Dragshaw, a Carrie Bradshaw-impersonating drag queen, racking up thousands of likes on each post.

Sarah Jessica Parker has even leaned into the pervasive fandom around the show, replying to fan comments and answering fan questions still lingering 20 years later.

Three unexpected superfans of the show are Cory Cavin, Jon Sieber, and Kevin James Doyle, who operate a podcast titled "The Bradshaw Boys." In each episode, the comedians sit down and watch a different episode of "Sex and the City"— a new one, in consecutive order, every week — and discuss the themes of the episode, usually with a female guest. At the end of the podcast, they rate the episode from one to five cosmopolitans, a drink commonly mentioned throughout the series.

The trio has been recognized by both SJP and Kristin Davis, who played Charlotte York. On their popular podcast, they have interviewed directors from the show, other superfans, a "Sex and the City" trivia expert, and even the actor who played Miranda's first boyfriend, Skipper.

Insider sat down with the Bradshaw Boys to discuss what drew them to watching, analyzing, and inevitably loving the show as three straight men in 2019.

Keep reading to see what they think other men can learn from watching "Sex and the City" today.

You'll gain an understanding of how people of all genders and backgrounds can relate to each other through friendship.

One thing the Bradshaw Boys immediately took away from "Sex and the City" was the strength of the female friendships on the show and the immediate sense of community they found with each other and with other fans.

"You take away an understanding of the depth of the female relationships in the show. You realize that women relate to each other over these deep issues and that, by watching the show and really thinking about topics like love, sex, friendship, and more, you're better prepared to be included in a lot of those conversations," said Doyle.

They've interviewed people of all ages and genders, and have been able to have meaningful conversations about the show with them.

"It's like comfort food for so many people," said Jon Sieber. "When we sit down and watch it all together, usually with a cool guest, it's a really fun vibe. My wife used the show as a way to keep her company while working on acting contracts, and people like Dan Clay (Carrie Dragshaw) watch it in big groups with friends. It really brings people together."

You'll be better at analyzing your own personality traits when it comes to relationships, whether it's realizing you're "unavailable" like Big or sometimes immature like Steve ...

Each episode's theme calls the viewer to think about Carrie's "I couldn't help but wonder..." question and deciding which character's point of view they agree with the most on each topic.

"Take Ross and Rachel from 'Friends,'" Kevin Doyle said. "The whole plot of the show is 'will they, won't they get together?' But, no one's sitting around wondering if they're a Ross or a Rachel. The characters in 'Sex and the City' are having concrete discussions that relate to situations in everyone's lives — am I really in love with this person? Do I want to have kids or get married?

"That's why the show has created such a mass following, years on. You can see yourself in every character in different parts of your life, and it naturally calls for a discussion with other people."

... but you'll also learn the women you've dated might think of you as a caricature of yourself.

The Bradshaw Boys all said that at different points in the show, they could relate to the plight and victories of the main four characters — Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte. However, they also noted that the male characters were often caricatures of men, and not truly fleshed out people. They realized this might be true to life in the dating scene of today, as well.

"I recently had a date at my apartment, and I currently have moths eating my nice Restoration Hardwear rug. I genuinely worried if I was going to be known as 'moth boy,'" said Doyle.

"In some aspect or another, we may all end up being caricatures to the people we meet while dating in New York City. You may always be known as 'that guy who...' or 'that girl who...' That aspect of the show may still be true," said Cavin.

You'll finally know what a Manolo Blahnik is.

While many men might not be previously aware of the big-name shoe designers mentioned throughout the series, fashion is a huge part of the show and building each character. It's no surprise that along the way, men watching the show might pick up a few style pointers.

While discussing the fashion of the show, the Bradshaw Boys commented on how the costume design — masterminded by legendary designer and stylist Patricia Field — helped to distinguish each character, as well as how surprisingly in style the fashion is compared to today.

Speaking of one commonly referred-to outfit of Miranda's— oversized blue denim overalls, a baseball cap, and a puffer best — Sieber said he wasn't sure if Miranda was a lawyer or simply a street style icon "waiting for the next Supreme drop."

You'll get all the insight you need into the female mind.

The trio agreed that the show gives men an insight into what women talk about when they're alone with each other — something men have possibly been wondering about for as long as time.

"Men for what seems like centuries have sat around saying, 'I don't know what women want.' Little do they know there are hours of television that will tell them," Doyle said.

"Take one week off from Tinder dates and throwing drinks at an unnecessary campaign — just watch 'Sex and the City' and I'm sure your averages will go way up," Sieber joked.

"'Sex and the City' can also teach men to listen more. A lot of the conversations that the women on the show are having are still extremely relevant today," Cavin said.

You'll feel able to be more vulnerable when it comes to topics like love and relationships.

While the show can certainly offer some lighthearted dating advice, it can also spark some heavier discussions about love and relationships, the Boys said.

"We just recently had a really meaningful discussion the other day about Carrie and Aidan's relationship. Wanting to move a relationship forward and the other person not being on the same page was something I personally relate to, so that opened up a really great discussion between the three of us," said Doyle. "It wasn't necessarily something I would bring up on my own, but the episode made me talk about it."

"If 'Sex and the City' is the bridge or the vehicle for you to connect with other people, and especially your guy friends, then that's great," Sieber would tell other men who might be hesitant to watch "Sex and the City.""You'll have a great time doing it and maybe even relate to each other on a whole new level."

"Watching 'Sex and the City' all the way through together really gave us the vocabulary to talk about a lot of complex issues with each other, and become closer as friends," Cavin agreed.

Be sure to catch new podcast episodes of the "The Bradshaw Boys" on Spotify and iTunes or catch one of their live shows in New York City on December 5.

December 7, 1941 began as a perfect Sunday morning for the troops serving the US fleet at Pearl Harbor.

Under a early morning South Pacific sun, softball teams were lining up on the beach. Pitchers warmed up their arms, while batting rosters were finalized and the wives and kids came over from seaside church services.

They did not know that for hours the Japanese naval fleet and air forces had been speeding across the ocean toward America's Pacific base. There, like a string of pearls draped across the docks and waterfront, was the majority of America's naval might.

The devastating Japanese onslaught began at 7:48 a.m., eventually killing 2,402 Americans and wounding many others, sinking four battleships and damaging many more.

The Pearl Harbor attack spurred America into World War II, leading ultimately to Allied victory over the Japanese in the East and Nazis and other Axis powers in the West. And the country promised never to forget this day of infamy.

Here are photographs from the attack and its immediate aftermath.

Amanda Macias and Kamelia Angelova contributed to an earlier version of this story.

On the morning of December 7, 1941, an attack planned by Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto to demobilize the US Navy was carried out.

Around 7 a.m., an Army radar operator spotted the first wave of the Japanese planes. The officers who received these reports did not consider them significant enough to take action.

The Japanese hit most of the US ships in Oahu before 9 a.m.

The Japanese also took the opportunity to attack military airfields while bombing the fleet in Pearl Harbor. The purpose of these simultaneous attacks was to destroy American planes before they could respond.

More than 90 ships were anchored at Pearl Harbor. The primary targets were the eight battleships in Battleship Row.

The USS West Virginia, left, was one of the battleships to sink during the attack. The Japanese successfully damaged all eight.

At about 8:10 a.m., the USS Arizona exploded as a bomb ignited its forward ammunition magazine. About half of the total number of Americans killed that day were on this ship.

Here's another picture of the USS Arizona sinking.

The USS Shaw, a destroyer, also exploded during the two-hour attack by Japan.

The damaged USS Nevada tried to escape down the channel toward the open sea but became a target during the second wave of 170 Japanese planes, hoping to sink it in the channel and block the narrow entrance to Pearl Harbor. The ship was grounded with 60 killed on board.

A Japanese plane hit by American naval antiaircraft fire was engulfed in flames. Fewer than 30 Japanese planes were lost in the attack.

About 190 US planes were destroyed, and another 159 were damaged.

Sailors at the Naval Air Station in Kaneohe, Hawaii, attempted to salvage a burning PBY Catalina in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

People in New York's Times Square bought newspapers with headlines like this one, "Japs Attack US." The US entered World War II after the surprise attack.

Salvage work soon began on the destroyers USS Cassin and USS Downes. The Japanese failed to damage any US aircraft carriers, which were surprisingly absent from the harbor.

About 10% of Japanese planes were lost on December 7, 1941.

The USS Oklahoma was considered too old to be worth repairing.

A Guantánamo Bay detainee's drawings show the brutal CIA torture he endured at a secret US-run prison in Thailand

A drawing by Guantánamo prisoner Abu Zubaydah of his torture at a secret CIA prison.

  • The Guantánamo Bay detainee Abu Zubaydah was the first victim of the George W. Bush administration's torture program in August 2002.
  • Zubaydah, who remains indefinitely detained with no prospect of being prosecuted, drew depictions of the various ways in which he was tortured for a report published by his attorney.
  • Insider has republished eight of these drawings, which show Zubaydah being waterboarded, shackled in stress positions, and confined in boxes.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Abu Zubaydah was captured by US forces after a gun fight in Faisalabad, Pakistan, in March 2002. US officials incorrectly believed the Saudi Arabian citizen was a member of al-Qaida and transported him to a secret US-run prison, known as a black site, in Thailand.

In August 2002, Zubaydah, already suffering from a severe leg wound, became the first victim of the George W. Bush administration's "enhanced interrogation," which included shackling him in stress positions and confined spaces, prolonged sleep deprivation, and 83 episodes of waterboarding.

The Senate Intelligence Committee's report on the CIA torture program, which was partially declassified and released in 2014, found the enhanced-interrogation techniques were ineffective, "brutal," and "far worse" than the CIA had described them as being.

This photo provided by U.S. Central Command, shows Abu Zubaydah, date and location unknown.

During one waterboarding session, Zubaydah "became completely unresponsive, with bubbles rising through his open, full mouth."

At some point during Zubaydah's detention, he lost one of his eyes for unknown reasons.

CIA interrogators were so worried about the details of Zubaydah's torture becoming public that they requested "reasonable assurances that [Abu Zubaydah] will remain in isolation and incommunicado for the remainder of his life," the Senate report found.

Investigators found that the CIA lied to Bush about the effectiveness of the enhanced-interrogation techniques used on Zubaydah, telling the president that Zubaydah gave interrogators additional information as a result of the torture.

In fact, the report found that Zubaydah, now 48, provided the CIA with more information about al-Qaida "activities, plans, capabilities, and relationships," and the group's leadership before being subjected to torture than he did after.

And they discovered that Zubaydah was never a member of al-Qaida, didn't have advanced knowledge of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and had no information about future attacks.

After being held in US black sites for four years, Zubaydah was transferred to the US prison at Guantánamo, Cuba, where he's been detained since but never criminally charged. Zubaydah's attorney of 10 years, the Seton Hall law professor Mark Denbeaux, told Insider that military prosecutors "can't find a crime to charge him with."

This week, Denbeaux and his colleagues at Seton Hall released a report, "How America Tortures," that includes drawings Zubaydah made depicting the various ways in which he was tortured in 2002. The New York Times first published the drawings on Wednesday.

"I think these pictures may have more impact than I ever expected because I've lived with them for so long," Denbeaux said. "It does seem like people might view this all over again."

Denbeaux added of his client, "He really wants to find out how much the world is hearing about him because he feels lost in Guantánamo."

Below are Zubaydah's drawings:

Zubaydah drew himself being waterboarded by CIA interrogators. He was tortured in this manner 83 times.

"They kept pouring water and concentrating on my nose and my mouth until I really felt I was drowning and my chest was just about to explode from the lack of oxygen,"Zubaydah told his attorneys in 2008.

The detainee said he had his head repeatedly banged against the wall and was dragged with a towel around his neck, causing bleeding. He also said he was slapped in the face.

One of the psychologists contracted by the CIA to devise the torture techniques has said"walling" was used to disorient and "discombobulate" the prisoners.

Here, Zubaydah shows himself naked and forced into a stress position on his tiptoe.

Zubaydah drew himself shaved and shackled to a chair with a bucket underneath it and a bag over his head.

Zubaydah said he was subjected to sleep-deprivation techniques that involved painful shackling and being doused with water.

The detainee said he was subjected to sleep deprivation, in some cases for two to three weeks at a time.

"It felt like an eternity, to the point that I found myself falling asleep despite the water being thrown at me by the guard," he said in the Seton Hall report.

He said he was forced into a small box and shackled in the fetal position.

Zubaydah said he spent "countless hours" tied up in the fetal position inside a small box, which caused him intense pain.

"As soon as they locked me up inside the box, I tried my best to sit up, but in vain, for the box was too short. I tried to take a curled position but to no vain, for it was too tight," Zubaydah said in the Seton Hall report.

Zubaydah said he was shackled and forced to sit on a bucket in a pitch-dark box.

Zubaydah said he was forced into a pitch-dark box that "looked like a wooden casket" and had to sit on a bucket that served as a toilet.

This image depicts Zubaydah in another stress position, in this case with both his arms and his legs shackled.

The 30 biggest food trends of the last decade

Untitled 2019 11 20T120622.407

Rainbow bagels and pastries changed the way we eat dessert.

Instagram and other social-media platforms have opened the doors for more and more photogenic foods — and nothing is more photogenic than a rainbow-colored bagel.

Avocado toast has become synonymous with the 2010s and millennials.

Avocado toast is exactly what it sounds like — simply smashed avocado spread on toast. It often comes with eggs and spices.

Milk alternatives such as oat milk, soy milk, and various nut milk have spiked in popularity.

Whether it's more conscious consumers worried about the environmental impact of the dairy industry or those who choose to stay away from dairy for health or ethical reasons, one thing is clear — milk alternatives are here to stay.

Acai bowls topped with granola and fresh fruit became a popular wellness trend.

Pronounced "ah-sah-ee," the acai bowl craze spawned the popular chain Playa Bowls, which now has 65 locations.

Kombucha has cemented itself as a popular health drink.

Kombucha is made by fermenting tea, often infused with other flavors. In fact, because of the fermentation process, kombucha is slightly alcoholic, coming in at less than 0.5% ABV.

Activated charcoal turned everything from ice cream to cocktails black.

At one point in the 2010s, foods made with activated charcoal began to replace those popular rainbow items. Everything from ice cream to cocktails was being made with the ingredient, and it was even the center of the "50 Shades of Charcoal" festival in the summer of 2018.

It has since been banned as a food additive in New York City.

Matcha, a specific kind of green tea, is known for its health benefits and vivid green color.

Matcha has been around for centuries, but the fad food began taking over menus and Instagram feeds around 2016. The flavor was soon incorporated into everything from candy to baked goods

Poke bowls usually feature raw fish, rice, and various vegetables.

The dish was everywhere in the summer of 2016, with Hawaiian restaurants popping up all over New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, and several other cities.

Elaborate cocktail creations also hit the scene across the country, including smoked cocktails.

Many mixologists choose to impart a smoky flavor into their cocktails by burning different herbs and wood chips in or around the glass.

Meat alternatives, such as the Impossible Burger and the Beyond Meat burger, have turned the fast-food industry on its head.

Burger King's Impossible Whopper and Dunkin's Beyond Meat breakfast sandwich are two examples of fast-food companies shifting to plant-based meat alternatives due to increasing consumer demand.

Coconut oil — as a cooking ingredient and as a wellness cure-all — became a popular alternative to other cooking oils.

Though coconut oil contains lots of saturated fats, it has roughly the same amount of calories per tablespoon as olive oil and is often found in moisturizers and hair-care products.

Wild, over-the-top desserts also made a splash.

Massive milkshakes, giant sundaes, and elaborate waffle creations all made waves in the 2010s.

Latte art made a splash as coffee culture intensified.

Latte art, or art made using espresso, steamed milk, and frothed milk to make images in foam, took over social media for a spell in the mid-2010s.

Hard seltzer will go down as one of the biggest trends of the 2010s, with consumers flocking to the lower-calorie boozy beverage.

The summer of 2019 was the summer of hard seltzer. The boozy beverage was so beloved that there was even a national shortage of White Claw, the most popular brand of hard seltzer.

The fast-casual explosion hit its stride with chains such as Sweetgreen and Shake Shack.

Fast-casual restaurants lie somewhere between fast-food and full-service, meaning they usually don't offer table service with a waitstaff but are generally regarded as having higher quality food than the average fast-food restaurant.

Soylent and other meal replacement shakes got a face-lift in the late 2010s.

With its modern, minimalist branding and marketing, Soylent caters towards a younger crowd that's looking for quick, on-the-go meals.

Though they've been around for hundreds of years, macarons saw an uptick in popularity in the states in the 2010s.

The French cookies are made using whisked egg whites and sugar to make meringue, the main ingredient in macarons.

Food trucks have become hotbeds for chefs who might not have the resources to open a brick-and-mortar kitchen.

The mobility of a truck allows entrepreneurs to reach a large audience and announce their location on various social-media platforms.

Kale, a nutritious leafy green, became a popular smoothie additive.

The leafy green became so popular that Beyoncé was even seen wearing a "kale" sweatshirt stylized in the collegiate format of Yale University.

Edible gold leaf has become a widespread decoration for fine-dining dishes.

From $2,000 gold-covered pizza in Manhattan to an Australian burger made with 24-karat buns, the fancy ingredient has become an over-the-top addition to a variety of foods.

Natural Wine has both divided the wine community and spurred a new wave of young enthusiasts.

Natural wine, a broad term for wines that are produced with minimal intervention from the winemaker, has become a popular drink option in recent years.

Juicing fruits and vegetables became a popular trend in the wellness scene.

Juicing vegetables including celery, kale, carrots, and beets, made raw vegetable consumption cool and easy. However, home juicing has lost a bit of steam as many fast-casual restaurants and grocery stores have started offering pre-juiced vegetables in bottles.

Cold brew coffee is everywhere these days, as iced coffee lovers flock to the highly-caffeinated coffee beverage.

Cold brew is made by steeping ground coffee with cold water for hours, creating a coffee "concentrate" that often has more caffeine than your average cup of joe.

Negronis made a comeback, as cocktail lovers have embraced the bitterness of various Italian liqueurs.

The Negroni is made with gin, vermouth, and the bitter Italian liqueur Campari. It's also the staple cocktail of the world's best bar of 2019

Though smoked and cured meats never go out of style, charcuterie boards dominated the 2010s.

Charcuterie boards often feature a selection of smoked or cured meats, various cheeses, and a sweet component — whether it be dried or fresh fruit, honey, or sweet vegetables.

Session beers, or beers that are brewed to have a lower alcohol content, are becoming popular for their drinkability.

Low-ABV session beers are meant to be enjoyed in larger quantities. The lower alcohol percentage allows people to drink more of them in a "session" without getting too intoxicated.

Mocktails and nonalcoholic beers, such as Heineken's 0.0, also made a sober splash in the 2010s, as more consumers become "sober-curious," or give up booze altogether.

Mocktail bars are also opening all over the country to cater to customers looking for a way to socialize at the bar without drinking alcohol.

Fermenting foods made a huge impact on small and large restaurants.

Fermenting food, or allowing bacteria and yeast to break down carbs in order to preserve food, became a huge trend in the 2010s, as fine-dining establishments and mom-and-pops alike got into the practice.

The Noma Guide to Fermentation, a guide to fermenting pretty much everything, was also released by the team at Noma

Farm-to-table restaurants, or restaurants where the aim is to shorten the distance between ingredients' sources and the restaurant, were popular.

Though its actual meaning is often hard to define, farm-to-table became a popular phrase in the 2010s as consumers tried to eat more locally grown, organic products.

Zero-waste cooking has become a trend as professional chefs and home cooks alike try to lower their carbon footprints.

Cooking with as little waste as possible — whether it's leftover food or plastic packaging — has become a goal for many restaurants as the industry becomes more and more conscious of its environmental impact.

The best Christmas tree decorations

  • We've gathered up an array of Christmas tree decorations to make your home festive for the holidays.
  • Whether it's an 8-foot ceiling duster, a tiny tabletop tree, or any size in between, an unadorned conifer is merely a houseplant, not a Christmas tree. It's what you put on the tree that transforms it into a celebration of the holidays. That's why we've rounded up the best ornaments, toppers, lights, and tree skirts below.

Whether you prefer to cut your own tree, choose one from the local tree lot, or retrieve your faux tree from storage, it's just not Christmas without a decorated tree gracing the living room. For many families, trimming the tree is a treasured holiday tradition, with all family members participating. In other households, one person prefers to do the decorating alone. Either way, it's always fun to get reacquainted with your holiday decor as you pull each piece from storage containers.

Of course, there are times you need, or just want, to add some more holiday decor to your collection. Or maybe this is your first year living on your own or setting up a holiday tree. Either way, you're on the hunt for Christmas tree decorations, which generally include ornaments, lights, some sort of topper, and a tree skirt to cover up the typically unattractive tree stand and provide visual balance to the tree's height.

And while there are a lot of places to buy tree decorations, it can be rather overwhelming choosing your favorites from the nearly endless options available online and in brick-and-mortar stores. That's where we come in.

Life can get a bit hectic as the holidays approach, so to make it easier for you to cross a few things off your must-do list, we've selected a wide selection of our favorite Christmas tree decorations to turn that plain conifer into a holiday star.

Though we admit there really is no "best" Christmas tree decoration and it mostly comes down to personal preference, we do stand by our assertion that you really can't go wrong with any of the following options. So whether you prefer traditional, whimsical, or something in between, get ready to trim your holiday tree.

Here are our favorite Christmas tree decorations:

Updated 12/05/2019 by Lisa Sabatini: Updated prices, links, and formatting. Removed out-of-stock items.

Christmas Tree Lights

When it's time to trim your holiday tree, start with the lights. As a rough rule of thumb, you'll want 100 mini lights for every foot of Christmas tree height. So for example, if your tree is 6 feet tall, you'll want a total of 600 lights. While you can connect strings of different colored lights, you do need to stick with the same size and type of bulb, so keep that in mind when choosing holiday string lights.

The best clear traditional tree lights

If you like traditional clear lights with a steady glow, you'll love the Prextex 100-count Christmas Lights. The green wire blends in with your tree, and the lights are bright and dependable. The string of lights is approximately 18 feet long, and you can connect up to five strings to cover your entire tree.

The best colored tree lights

One 66-foot strand of Brizled LED Mini String Lights features 200 LEDs and should provide enough colorful bulbs to decorate an entire tree. They're rated to last for 25,000 hours, so you probably won't have to replace the strand. Ever. With just one strand of these bright, colorful LED lights, you should be able to decorate even an 8- or 9-foot tree.

The best bubble lights for the tree

If you have fond childhood memories of these vintage bubbling candle-shaped lights adorning your Christmas tree, you'll be thrilled with the Novelty Lights Bubble Set. You're not going to decorate your entire tree with bubble lights (probably), but tucking one or two strings of these old-fashioned fun bubblers along the tree branches adds an instant dose of nostalgic fun and color. Each string is 7 feet long and has seven bubblers with small clips to keep them in place and steady.

Christmas Tree Toppers

Once your lights are in place, it's time for the topper. Typically, these slip over the top of the tree's trunk, and generally take a little bit of wiggling or adjusting before they sit steadily. While stars and angels are very popular options, there are plenty of other choices as well.

The best animated tree topper

Your kids will love watching Santa flying around the Christmas tree in his reindeer-drawn sleigh with a "Believe" banner trailing behind. The Mr. Christmas Santa Sleigh Animated Tree Topper has a brightly lit yellow star that attaches easily to your tree's top, and with a flick of the on/off switch, Santa begins his journey. This topper is AC powered with adapter included.

The best snowflake tree topper

Snowflakes are a popular Christmas-tree theme, but this handcrafted, laser-cut beauty from Cost Plus World Market isn't the run-of-the-mill cheap plastic design. Instead, the Layered Wood Snowflake Tree Topper has three overlapping wooden pieces with just a hint of glitter for extra pizzazz. The wire-coiled base holds the star securely on the top of your tree.

The best tree topper for kids

The Hugging Snowman Tree Topper will absolutely thrill your kids, but let's admit it: It's adorable enough to thrill adults as well. It's easy to position too. Just slip Mr. Snowman's head over the top of the tree, and then bend his wired arms to grip the branches and keep him in place. His long red scarf adds even more fun to the tree.

The best angel tree topper

Hand-crafted in silk and wool, this Silk Waldorf Angel Tree Topper from Etsy can be custom-made according to the size and hair color you desire. Each angel is made with a wool body handcrafted from the fleece of New Mexico sheep and then topped with woolen and silk needle-felted fibers.

Christmas Tree Ornaments

Your tree is up, it's strung with lights, and your topper is firmly in place. Now it's time for the best part: trimming it with your favorite ornaments.

While everyone has their own preference when it comes to ornaments, it generally makes the most sense from a budget and convenience perspective to decorate the bulk of the tree with inexpensive, easily found shatterproof or glass balls in your favorite holiday colors. You'll find every color of the rainbow at Target or Walmart. Then add your own personality with individual ornaments or small sets reflecting a hobby, color, interest, or something whimsical that strikes your fancy.

The best personalized ornament

The holidays are all about family, so celebrate yours with a personalized ornament that includes everyone's name. The Winter Family Ornament from Bed, Bath & Beyond includes your family name in the center, surrounded by up to 12 first names. It's made of porcelain with a glossy finish and is nearly 3 inches in diameter.

The best blown-glass ornament

What do you get when you combine traditional blown-glass with an of-the-moment and absolutely adorable craze? This super-cute sloth ornament from Old World Christmas, that's what. The Christmas Sloth is hand-blown from glass, then hand-painted and sprinkled with a bit of glitter. The kids are going to argue over who gets to put this on the tree, but don't feel bad if you have the urge to step in and do it yourself.

The best felted-wool ornaments

While Cost Plus World Market has a large selection of wonderfully unique felted-wool Christmas ornaments, you can't go wrong with this adorable set of two Christmas Mice. Mr. and Mrs. Mouse are all dressed up and ready to celebrate the holiday with their very own tree and gifts. The mice are made of handcrafted of wool and 5.5 inches tall.

The best ball ornaments

You already have your shiny glass or shatterproof ball ornaments, so add some warm texture, pattern, and color with two sets of 12 Knit Ball Ornaments from WEWILL. Each ornament measures around 3 inches in diameter and is completely covered with knitted wool in a colorful winter sweater design. Each set contains multiple patterns.

The best wooden ornaments

While the majority of Christmas ornaments are made of glass, plastic, or wool, it's nice to mix it up a bit with a variety of textures, which is why we love these Wooden Heart Ornaments. You get two sets for 24 ornaments in all. Measuring 2.7 inches across, each ornament is delicately laser-cut by hand into a reindeer-and-bird design and finished with a red satin ribbon for hanging.

Best Tree Skirts

Most Christmas tree stands are not very attractive, so a Christmas tree skirt serves two purposes: It covers up the stand, and it provides a horizontal counterbalance to the upright shape of the tree. Smooth your tree skirt in place once the tree is fully decorated, and then arrange the wrapped gifts on top of it. Now you're ready for Santa's visit!

The best faux-fur tree skirt

The Snowy White Faux Fur Christmas Tree Skirt is hard to resist. It's almost like a wintry drift of snow beneath your tree, except this snowdrift is warm, plush, and fuzzy. At 48 inches in diameter, it's large enough to work with just about any tree and has hooks and loops along the slit edge to fasten it around the tree's trunk. The only downside is that your cat or dog might decide this is the best sleeping spot ever, but never fear: The skirt is hand-washable in cold water if necessary.

The best traditional tree skirt

The Holiday Plaid Christmas Tree Skirt is decorated with a red and green plaid print with a thick border of green velvet for a traditional finish to your Christmas tree decorations. Best of all, it comes personalized with your family name or any word up to 20 characters. The skirt is 47.5 inches in diameter and can be spot-cleaned.

The best knit tree skirt

The Reversible Fair Isle Christmas Tree Skirt is softly knit like your favorite sweater, and sports a cheerful red-and-white Fair Isle reindeer pattern on one side. Flip it over, and it's white with red stripes. Whichever side you choose to display, the tree skirt is a traditional design that adds lot of holiday cheer. The tree skirt is 48 inches in diameter and can be spot-cleaned.

The best elegant tree skirt

If your holiday decor leans more toward classic elegance than cutesy designs, you'll love the beautiful Valery Madelyn Gold Christmas Tree Skirt. This 48-inch velvet and satin stunner has gold sequins throughout the central star as well as along the satin border. The cream and gold color scheme complements a collection of metallic gold and clear glass ornaments.

January 1: Ask yourself: What do I want that I already have? What else, if anything, do I truly want?

Katherine Schafler, a New York psychotherapist, wrote about the "ambition trap" in a post for Thrive Global. It's the tendency for getting everything we want to make us unhappy.

"The more self-aware you are, the easier it'll be for you to distinguish between what you like, and what you actually want to acquire," she writes. "But how do we make that distinction? As human beings, we're so used to wanting more as a default mode. More food, more money, more friends, more sex, more stuff, more time, more attention. So how do we start wanting less?"

It starts with the questions posed above.

January 2: Stop hitting the snooze button.

It might feel as though pressing the snooze button in the morning gives you a little bit of extra rest to start your day, but the truth is that it does more harm than good.

That's because when you wake up, your endocrine system begins to release alertness hormones to get you ready for the day. By going back to sleep, you're slowing this process. Plus, nine minutes doesn't give your body time to get the restorative, deep sleep it needs.

January 3: Start keeping track of your net worth.

One of the easiest ways to keep track of your financial progress is to monitor your net worth: everything you own minus everything you owe.

As a financial planner in New York, Business Insider's Lauren Lyons Cole says one of the first tasks she asks clients to complete is their current financial snapshot, an overview of every aspect of their financial situation, including account balances. Once you can see all your money in one place, you can start figuring out what you want to do with it.

Bonus: Getting organized frees up brain space so you don't have to think about money nearly as much.

January 4: Talk to your boss about your professional ambitions.

It's on you to tell your boss that you want a promotion or a salary bump.

That's not necessarily an easy conversation to have, but it's a key one, according to Toni Thompson, vice president of people and talent at The Muse. Thompson told Business Insider, "Talk about what you want with your boss. Make sure that they know what salary you want eventually and the title you want or more opportunities that you want."

While your boss may not be able to give you what you want right away, they can at least start helping you get there.

January 5: Overhaul your LinkedIn.

Business Insider spoke with Hari Srinivasan, head of identity products at LinkedIn, who was in charge of LinkedIn's redesign of its user experience. Srinivasan shared some pointers for crafting a killer profile, such as:

• Filling out your summary.

• Sharing stories and blog posts that would interest your audience.

• Highlighting at least five skills relevant to your role and industry.

January 6: Use a simple calculation to figure out how much you need to save before you can retire.

If Saturday beach trips and golf games have you dreaming about walking away from your nine-to-five for good, there's a simple way to calculate how much you need to save to make it happen:

Your desired retirement income ÷ 4% = How much money you need to retire.

For example, if your perfect retirement salary is $80,000, divide it by 4%, and you get $2,000,000. That's your magic retirement number, and you can call it quits as soon as your account balances hit it — even if you're only 28.

January 7: Take a Sunday to do 'fake work' and be more productive during the workweek.

"Fake work" is a made-up term for email correspondence, scheduling phone calls, and organizing to-do lists — that is, the stuff that any modern professional has to do to stay employed, but that rarely produces an immediate, tangible result.

It's important, but it doesn't take that much energy or concentration, so you can easily do it from a coffee shop or while lounging in your pajamas.

If you focus on big projects Monday through Friday, and save fake work for Sundays, you won't have to worry about trying and failing to toggle between the two on a daily basis.

January 8: Start your day with a 'power hour.'

A "power hour" is when you work uninterrupted on a top-priority project. Laura Vanderkam, the author of several books on time management and productivity, recommends scheduling one first thing every morning.

This isn't as easy as it sounds, especially when you arrive at the office to find your inbox overflowing and your boss on your case about a new assignment.

But if you don't at least plan to spend the first 60 minutes of your day on something that matters, you may easily find yourself spending multiple hours wading through your inbox, attending to things that aren't necessarily important or urgent.

A "pro level" version of this strategy, Vanderkam said, is dedicating all of Monday morning to a bigger task that's more speculative and requires some deep thought.

January 9: Get it done first — make it perfect later.

Business Insider's Daniel McMahon says that when he's working on an important task that needs to get done ASAP:

"I turn off the internet and work straight through without stopping until the project is done, or at least one significant part of the project is done. I don't aim for perfection, but simply to get the project done. Later, I can go back and make the work as good as I can. This has worked well for me."

January 10: Set up a networking coffee with someone you admire.

In a post on his website, I Will Teach You to Be Rich, GrowthLab CEO Ramit Sethi says that your initial email is crucial to getting a meeting with a successful person you admire.

You can find Sethi's full template for what to say here. Some things to keep in mind:

• Mention how you came across their name.

• Explain what you want from them — their advice.

• Respect their time, and offer to meet on their schedule.

January 11: Change your scenery to stay productive if you work from home.

Business Insider's Tanza Loudenback felt as if her productivity was suffering when she started working from home. But after about a month of trial and error, she found one strategy that worked: changing her scenery.

Loudenback now spends at least two hours every day away from her "work desk," which is in her bedroom, and at least one day a week outside of her apartment at a coffee shop or elsewhere. Brie Reynolds, a senior career specialist at FlexJobs, told Loudenback that moving from one space to another is "a great way to stay focused and productive throughout the day." Plus, it breaks up the monotony we all suffer from occasionally.

January 12: Make digital copies of your handwritten notes (and throw away the handwritten pages).

Josh Zerkel, a certified professional organizer and the director of global community and training at Evernote, has advice for anyone whose desk space is disappearing thanks to piles of notes. Capture and store all those notes digitally— and then throw the papers away.

Having all your files in one place is the best thing you can do to start being more productive, he said.

Zerkel added that you shouldn't spend more than 10 minutes a day on this project. He recommended using a free Evernote app called Scannable, though there are a bunch of similar apps available.

January 13: Talk to your partner for 10 minutes about anything except jobs, kids, and housework.

The "10-minute rule" is a suggestion from sociology professor and relationship expert Terri Orbuch.

As Orbuch describes it in her book "5 Simple Steps to Take Your Marriage From Good to Great," the rule is a "daily briefing in which you and your spouse make time to talk about anything under the sun — except kids, works, and household tasks or responsibilities."

Orbuch developed the rule after learning that most of the happy couples she studied know their spouse "intimately"— outside the bedroom — and make time often to exchange intimate knowledge.

January 14: Write your to-do list, and prep your workout clothes for tomorrow morning before bed.

Retired Navy SEAL commander Jocko Willink told Business Insider there are two things he does every night to get a running start the next morning — and that anyone can use them.

One, prepare your gym clothes tonight. The biggest obstacle for a person developing a workout routine is putting in extra effort to make it fit into their schedule. To make it easier on yourself, Willink said, prepare your workout gear at night so you can throw it on as soon as you slide out of bed.

Two, finish making tomorrow's to-do list tonight. You already know what you have to accomplish tomorrow, and you're better off planning your day quickly.

January 15: Create a 'work uniform' to save time and energy.

The "work uniform" is a concept that's been adopted by plenty of successful people. Mark Zuckerberg, Barack Obama, and Steve Jobs have all put work uniforms to use.

Some experts say that making lots of small decisions like what to wear and what to eat throughout the day saps your mental energy for when you need to make more pressing decisions, a phenomenon called "decision fatigue." This mental fatigue makes people more likely act impulsively or do nothing at all when more important matters come up.

Penny Geers, stylist and owner of Your Closet, Your Style, recommends being prepared to splurge on your work uniform so that it withstands lots of wear and laundering. Geers said you'll probably need to buy at least three to five bottoms, and no fewer than five tops.

January 16: If you want to learn a new language, start practicing it every night for 15 minutes before bed.

People who practice their language for 15 minutes before bed have a major edge on other Duolingo users, according to founder and CEO of the language learning app Luis Von Ahn.

"Those people we know are going to stick around for a really long time," Von Ahn says. "We see them doing that for a week, we say, 'This person is going to be here for a while.'"

Meanwhile, users who binge — spending hours on the site, cramming in French or German or Chinese language lessons — tend to disappear fast.

January 17: Talk to your partner about which chores you hate and which you don't mind so that you can stop fighting about housework.

On an episode of their podcast "Best of Both Worlds," Vanderkam and her cohost, physician Sarah Hart-Unger, talk about the "mental load" of parenting — that is, all the psychological energy it takes to remember to sign Davie up for swimming lessons and drive Janie to the dentist.

Their strategy for lightening the mental load and splitting responsibilities evenly between coparents is twofold:

1. Each person writes down all the family responsibilities they're taking care of.

2. Each person shares which of those responsibilities they enjoy, and which they don't.

That way, you'll find out how much of the burden you're really shouldering and figure out which chores you can "trade" or outsource so everybody's happy.

January 18: Set up a shopping filter in your Gmail to stop impulse spending.

Business Insider's Libby Kane has found that the best way to resist the urge to spend money online is simply to set up email filters.

Now all her shopping emails get immediately filtered into a shopping folder — not her inbox — until she realizes she needs something specific. Then she clicks in and sees if any of her favorite retailers are having sales.

January 19: Talk to a fellow passenger on your commute.

A 2014 study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that people are much happier on their commutes when they engage another passenger in conversation. They even feel more productive.

Yet the study results also suggest that people don't chat with fellow passengers because they think those passengers don't want to talk to them. If you can get over that fear — and realize that you might be doing yourself and them a favor — you might be better off.

January 20: Make cleaning your home manageable with '20/10' sprints.

This strategy, from Rachel Hoffman's "Unf*ck Your Habitat," is simple: You clean for 20 minutes and then take a 10-minute break. Hoffman says that you can tweak the exact times so you clean for 45 minutes and take a 15-minute break, for example.

That's enough time to put away a clean load of laundry or take the level of grossness down a notch in your bathroom.

The idea is to avoid what Hoffman calls "marathon cleaning"— that is, you let your home get messier and messier until it reaches the point where you can barely breathe. Then you spend a few days "cleaning like a maniac until it's livable again."

January 21: Create financial goals with your partner.

Financial experts told Business Insider that one of the most important things to do with your money when you get married is to create goals together.

That means getting on the same page about your priorities. Is it important to send your kids to private school? Is a weeklong vacation every summer crucial to your sanity? Do you want to eliminate your student loans before doing anything else? And so on.

January 22: Start waking up two minutes early, like a retired Marine.

During his stint in boot camp, Marine veteran Andrew Wittman picked up a morning habit that's stayed with him ever since.

"I was on the top bunk, so my face was six inches away from the double fluorescent light,"Wittman told Business Insider. "What they would do every morning is flip the lights on and throw steel garbage cans down the center of the room. On the first day, I was like, 'Oh, my God.'"

To avoid the shocking wake-up call, Wittman trained himself to always wake up two minutes early. For example, if he has a 5:30 wake-up, he'll get out of bed at 5:28.

Today, Wittman said, he sets himself up for success every morning by spending his extra two minutes on a daily affirmation.

January 23: Write down three things you’re grateful for.

In a commencement speech at UC Berkeley, Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg revealed one of the psychological strategies she's been using to cope with her husband's death: "Write down three moments of joy before I go to bed each night."

"This simple practice has changed my life," Sandberg said. "Because no matter what happens each day, I go to sleep thinking of something cheerful."

Martin Seligman, founder of the positive psychology movement, found that, after six months, study participants who wrote down three positive things before they went to bed each night felt happier and less depressed.

January 24: Set a savings goal based on your age.

To save 10% or 15% of your income each month, as experts recommend, you have to put in effort.

According to Fidelity's recommended retirement-savings benchmarks, if you're 30 years old and earn $60,000 a year, you should have the equivalent of one year's salary ($60,000) saved. At 35, it should be twice that amount ($120,000). At 40, it should be three times that amount ($180,000). You can see the full chart here.

Keep in mind that you don't have to save every penny of the amounts above to get to your goal. Your savings will grow exponentially if you invest the money you save.

January 25: Generate 20 business ideas in 10 minutes.

GrowthLab and I Will Teach You to Be Rich CEO Ramit Sethi says there are four questions you'll want to ask yourself to isolate the profitable skills you already have:

1. What do you already pay for?

2. What skills do you have?

3. What do your friends say you're great at?

4. What do you do on a Saturday morning?

"Spend about 10 to 20 minutes now writing down five answers for each of the four questions above," he writes. "Once you're done, congratulations — you now have 20 potential business ideas that you can grow into a flourishing side hustle."

January 26: Ask yourself a question from the CEO of Dropbox: One year from now, five years from now, what will I wish I had learned today?

That's a question Drew Houston, CEO of Dropbox, shared in a post for Business Insider.

It's smart to be "systematic" about learning, Houston told Business Insider US Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell on an episode of Business Insider's podcast "Success! How I Did It."

He said:

"Whether it's just the fundamentals of business or things like public speaking or being more inspiring or being a better leader, these are all things you can get better at with practice. You should set your sights high in terms of what you aspire to do, but you also have to be patient.

"It's like playing an instrument. You're not going to be great as a public speaker, or you're not going to improve a lot in five days, but in five years, you might be really surprised at how much you can improve."

January 27: Complete your estate-planning documents — such as a power of attorney form and healthcare directive — to remain in control of your life.

The best way to protect yourself from experiencing financial mistreatment or abuse, according to Jenny Flom, a New Jersey lawyer at Cole Schotz who focuses on guardianship actions, is to make sure your estate-planning documents are complete, and that means more than just a will.

"Make sure your power of attorney and your healthcare directive are completed," Flom told Business Insider.

A power-of-attorney form is a legal document that gives one or more people access to your financial accounts and the ability to make decisions with your money when you can't. A healthcare directive does the same for medical decisions.

January 28: Start a side hustle to supplement your income.

If you ask Chris Guillebeau, a New York Times best-selling author and entrepreneur, there's more reason to launch a side hustle than the lure of an extra paycheck.

"I do believe people need it, and I don't think it's just something that's nice — I think there's an urgency to it," Guillebeau, 39, told Business Insider. While he does think starting a side business is a smart way to develop some financial security, there's a deeper, "very positive" benefit he encourages people to shift their focus toward.

It's also crucial to "look away from the gig economy" and part-time jobs, he said, and put your energy toward creating something unique and valuable that people will pay for.

January 29: Ask your team for feedback on your performance (and wait quietly until they answer).

Kim Scott, a CEO coach and a former Google and Apple exec, is big on getting feedback from one's team. But she knows employees get squeamish around criticizing a boss.

In her book "Radical Candor," she offers a potential solution. The next time one of your employees gives the standard "Everything's fine" response? Silently count to six before saying anything else.

"Almost nobody can endure that much silence," Scott told Business Insider. "And they'll tell you something."

Maybe they'll mention that you're not so great at meeting deadlines, or that you consistently pay more attention to one person on the team. Whatever they say, don't dismiss it.

January 30: Start hugging or kissing your family before you leave for work.

According to IKEA's "Life at Home" report, while most people surveyed say it's important to hug or kiss their partner in the morning, far fewer people report showing this kind of physical affection before heading out the door.

And yet when it comes to romantic relationships, research suggests physical affection is related to greater relationship satisfaction.

Interestingly, one study, of college students and other adults, found that a person's satisfaction with the kind of physical affection they receive from their partner — like how often they hug and kiss and not just whether they actually do — strongly predicts how much they love their partner.

January 31: Start walking into job interviews like you already have the job.

Meghan Welch, an HR exec with Capital One, says the best way to nail a job interview is to pretend you already have the position.

She said the best candidates succeed by thoughtfully and enthusiastically articulating their big ideas for the company.

"It comes off as, 'I am super excited about the problem you are talking about right now, and I have a whole bunch of ways I would love to solve it,'" she said. "I get a lot of energy from that kind of discussion."

Slack is changing the way we chat at work. Here's an etiquette guide to help you survive a messaging-obsessed office.

  • As Slack becomes more integrated in modern offices, employees (like myself) sometimes slip up and use iMessage lingo in company chat rooms.
  • While you should avoid acronyms with swear words like "WTF," communicating casually with your coworkers can help foster friendships.
  • Just remember your boss and company management can read everything you say on Slack, so don't discuss sensitive information.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

For better or worse, Slack has disrupted office communication.

For me, our Slack-obsessed workplace led me to accidentally swear at my boss (kind of). He started a chat conversation over Slack to alert me of a shocking development in my careers beat. While I can't recall the exact comment, I found his news so disturbing I instinctively typed: "JFC."

Read more:13 things that should never surprise a boss

My boss questioned what I meant by the acronym, and I instantly felt my face get red with shame. The acronym stood for "Jesus F****** Christ"— not only did I take the Lord's name in vain, I used a swear word.

A more drastic example of the way Slack changed work comes from a new report from The Verge, which details how Away, the luggage startup, forced employees to post all messages to public Slack channels. Bosses reportedly criticized workers on these public groups, and fired employees that called out abusive behavior over Slack.

Despite the challenges, chatting has become an essential part of the modern workplace — Slack grew from 0 to 8 million daily users in just four years, and Microsoft says its competitor tool Teams might be growing even faster

You can be more casual on Slack than over email, and chat platforms can even help you form friendships at work. Still, there are some things — like swearing — that should stay out of the office entirely.

Here is the ultimate Slack etiquette guide for your workplace.

SEE ALSO: 20 things you should never say to your coworkers

Don't use acronyms with swear words in them.

Unfortunately for me, all career experts I spoke with said "WTF" has no place in your office Slack, no matter how ubiquitous the phrase has become.

Even though most people know what "WTF" means and are probably okay seeing it in their messages, Michael Kerr, an international business speaker and author of "The Humor Advantage," said that swearing still has no place at work.

"We have to remember that a lot of eyes are watching," Kerr said. "You'll have to anticipate that there are future readers on Slack who might not be comfortable with that style or that kind of language."

Since your company can see your Slack, don't talk about job hunting, medical history, bank details, or ill feelings toward coworkers.

It's no secret your company can read your Slack messages and emails. Better technology has made tracking employee behavior easier and (sometimes) more invasive — and companies can legally access any communication that happens in the office or through work devices, employment lawyers told The Wall Street Journal.

Because of these restrictions, Marc Cenedella, founder and CEO of Ladders, a job search website, advises that employees not discuss sensitive information on Slack, like your medical history or banking information. While your employer cannot legally discriminate based on any disease or condition, you should still keep personal issues as private as possible.

Furthermore, if you're looking for a promotion (or not to get fired), don't tell anyone you hate your boss on Slack either.

"People just don't realize all of your chats are saved on Slack," Cenedella told Business Insider. "Do not overshare your personal details or personal feelings on Slack."

Don't get in an argument over Slack.

iMessage and chat rooms sometimes allow users to talk to others in ways that they normally wouldn't when chatting face-to-face, said Lynn Taylor, workplace expert and author of "Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant." Cyberbullying, for instance, is on the rise among young people with cell phones, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics.

While many professionals don't outright bully coworkers, Slack makes it easier to respond with passive-aggressive comments that we wouldn't use in person.

"Slack is just not a good venue for an employee to deploy passive-aggressive tendencies toward a coworker or worse, your boss," Taylor told Business Insider. "Think twice before you take that there because you might see that person five minutes later across your cube or by the water cooler."

Slack is a great place to compliment your coworkers.

While negativity has no place in the workplace, Slack can also be a good venue to send your coworker positive feedback. Since Slack messages live on for weeks, you can memorialize an accomplishment by posting about it in your team's main chatroom, Taylor said.

Plus, upper management reading those messages get a chance to view your team's good work the next time they check through your messages.

"You're memorializing your communications with Slack," Taylor said. "What an opportunity to pay a kind word and memorialize it in this venue."

Don't over do it with emojis.

Emojis have also entered your office lingo — and that's not always a bad thing, Kerr said.

A "thumbs up" emoji can be a great way to tell your boss you received their message or you agree with their statement without sending another notification, he said. A "smiley face" emoji tells your coworker you are being friendly, Taylor said.

Yet sending a string of eight emojis in a row that "people have to decipher like it's hieroglyphics" won't cut it in the workplace, Kerr said. "Be careful of getting too cutesy with them the way you might on a text message with a friend."

If you're speaking with a senior leader at your company, or conveying a serious message, avoid emojis at all costs. "This is still about having a professional dialog," Taylor added.

Use miscellaneous Slack channels to make friends around your office.

When you first get a new job, you don't want to be overly eager for friendship before getting a chance to settle down in your role, Cenedella said. After getting situated, though, you can start branching out and trying to make friends.

Slack can help with that.

Often, companies have miscellaneous Slack channels for specific employees, such as those for parents, college alumni, and remote workers. These channels are a great way to get friendlier with your colleagues.

Some companies even have fun channels for cat-lovers or NBA fanatics that are designed to get you to speak more candidly about the topics you're passionate about. In these spaces, you can use more colloquial language than with your boss or in the main channel.

"You probably don't want to be sharing in your first week, your favorite Old Town Road memes," Cenedella said, referring to the hit song by Lil Nas X. "But if there's a channel called #BillieEilishForever, you can probably be a little bit more relaxed and casual in that channel as you chat with other people who follow Billie Eilish."

Don't send your colleagues a bunch of Slack messages when you could just use one...

When I text my friends, I tend to send out five to six small messages at a time:

"hey"
"what's up?"
"by the way do you know where Cristina is?"
"i saw her Instagram story about being in New York but I don't know where she's staying"
"i want to see if she can hang out with us on Friday!"

Over Slack, however, sending lots of tiny messages is a big no-no, Kerr said. Quickly sending people a bunch of messages — which he refers to as "Slack bombing"— sends them lots of notifications for no reason, and distracts them from a more urgent task.

"It's really annoying for people," Kerr said about Slack bombing. "Remember, it's not texting."

... and don't send big blocks of text over Slack.

In the same way you don't want to Slack-bomb your coworkers with a bunch of tiny messages, a big block of text can be an eyesore.

Kerr describes Slack as between a text and an email. If you're sending a lengthy message that requires a detailed response, or if you need to write in complete paragraphs, simply emailing your coworker will suffice.

"I think it's important to remember that the purpose of Slack ideally is to cut down on email use," he said. "[Slack] is not quite as formal as or as structured as an email might be."

Taylor, too, says that if you are going off on a tangent about a subject over Slack, you risk "putting everyone to sleep in the chat room."

"You should put that in an email," Taylor added.

Be wary of slang.

While many people have certain colloquialisms they use with friends, slang comes and goes quickly, and not everyone is up to the latest trend.

Take "on fleek," Cenedella said. The phrase, meaning "cool," hit mainstream popularity back in 2015 — so much so that The New York Times, Quartz, and other publications had to break down the term. Nowadays, young people have moved on to "yeet" and "stan."

Because of the short shelf-life of trendy words, your coworkers might not be fully up-to-date on today's slang, even if they're from a similar background as you. It's not offensive to use a colloquial term on Slack sometimes, Cenedella said, but just know your coworkers might not be aware of what you're saying.

"It's not like you have to avoid [slang] altogether, but the latest and greatest slang comes and goes away pretty quickly."

Tailor your speech to who you're talking to.

Most of us speak to colleagues we would see at happy hour much more colloquially than  we'd talk with a company's CEO.

Over Slack — just like in person — the same communication differences hold up, said Cenedella. It might be okay to slip in acronyms like "LOL" or talk more casually if you're chatting with your close coworker, especially if the company culture is one where everyone is working at a startup three years out of college.

But type as professionally as possible with your boss or another senior executive.

"There's not really one universal right way to use Slack," Cenedella said. "You've got to follow the cues of your particular office."

The best tree skirts

  • Christmas tree skirts add a dash of color and style to your holiday decor while hiding that unsightly tree stand. To help you find the best tree skirt, we rounded up the best options for small and large trees and more.
  • The Primode Holiday Images 50-Inch Tree Skirt is our top pick because it features classic Christmas colors and motifs, plus it's durable enough to last a lifetime.
  • For more holiday decorating ideas, check out the best artificial Christmas trees you can buy.

The winter holidays really are the most wonderful time of the year. When else can you justify eating dozens of cookies, opening second and third bottles of wine, stringing lights around the roof of your house, and putting an 8-foot tree in the center of your living room? And in any home where a Christmas tree will be set up during the holidays, it's as essential to have a great tree skirt underneath the tree as it is to have a shining star up on the top.

Tree skirts are important for three primary reasons, which will be of differing levels of value to different people and which I'll discuss in no particular order. A tree skirt can help keep your home clean by catching the needles that fall from a genuine pine tree, and which will invariably end up spread all around the house if not properly caught and collected. A tree skirt's ability to keep the room/home cleaner is its primary purpose for many households. (Note that even artificial trees shed some, so from a cleanliness perspective, a tree skirt is a good idea even with a fake tree.)

Tree skirts also help to keep pets and kids away from the tree stand. This is all the more important with a real tree that has a water-filled stand. Skirts help prevent messes or damage to wood flooring or carpets caused by spilled water and also help reduce the risk of electric shock. Finally, as noted above, tree skirts are a lovely addition to any holiday room, anchoring the decorative tableau (and, ideally, laden with presents).

Choosing the right tree skirt should be a pretty simple affair. First, measure the space the skirt will occupy to determine the maximum size the area can accommodate. Next, think about how large a tree you are going to get (or already have) and then look for skirts with a diameter of approximately the same size as the tree's widest span. When in doubt, opt for a skirt that's slightly smaller than the tree's width, not larger.

Finally, just pick a tree skirt you love based on how it looks and how it will look in the room. If you decorate lavishly, go ahead and choose an intricately patterned and colorful skirt. If your home holiday decor is more reserved, consider a solid-colored skirt or one with minimal flourishes.

The best tree skirt overall

The Primode Holiday Images 50-Inch Tree Skirt is big enough for trees up to 8 or 9 feet tall, and its red, green, and white wintry motifs make it look festive.

When my wife and I got our first Christmas tree a dozen or so years back, we also got just about the cheapest tree skirt known to history. It bunched up easily, it shed more fibers than the tree dropped needles, and it really just looked ... cheap. Still, we kept the damn thing for five or six years because it just seemed like such a hassle to replace it. Don't make that same mistake.

Instead, consider getting the Primode Holiday Images 50-Inch Tree Skirt. With it, your home may well be set for life — as far as Christmas tree skirts go, anyway.

At 50 inches across, this skirt is large enough for most trees yet it will still fit in most rooms. You can always fold a portion of your tree skirt to make it fit closer to a wall or into a corner. Its bright red background is warm and merry, while the green trees and white snowflakes stitched into the skirt add colorful cheer.

The skirt features a 5-inch center opening that should accommodate almost any trunk while still concealing the stand entirely. A pair of ties keep the skirt closed, and its weight and the quality of the fabric help it to lie flat without bunching or wrinkling.

This Primode tree skirt scores a four out of five stars when you average all of its ratings together. One customer says the skirt is "the perfect shade of red" for holiday decor, while another gushes: "The tree skirt is beautiful! I'm in love!"

An editor with BoomsBeat gave Primode tree skirts an impressive 9.1 out of 10 rating based on their quality. Primode skirts are also highly popular on Pinterest boards.

Pros: Lovely Christmas colors and designs, durable cotton/polyester blend, ideal size for most homes

Cons: Chemical odor when new requires time/and or washing to dispel

The best traditional tree skirt

The Valery Madelyn 48-inch Tree Skirt will look right at home in homes with a traditional style.

Some of the online product copy written about the Valery Madelyn 48-inch Tree Skirt refers to its look as a "classic baroque style." At first, I thought that description was a bit overwrought, but on closer consideration, I think they're spot on. The skirt looks rather demure from a distance, with a deep burgundy background and gray-gold ruffle that rather blend in with the greater tableau of a space, but seen up close, the surface is adorned with intricate swirling golden stitching and punctuated by silver sequins.

This tree skirt manages to be both regal and refined while still having just a touch of playful flash. In fact, the darker the room, the more the skirt will stand out, as Christmas light and/or a crackling fire make its gold and silver highlights sparkle.

At 48 inches in diameter, the Valery Madelyn Luxury Collection Gold and Burgundy Tree Skirt is large enough for most trees you're likely to install in the home or at a business. And with its quality fabrication and a set of Velcro straps holding it securely closed along the slit, the skirt is suitable for use in high traffic areas.

The Valery Madelyn Luxury Collection Gold and Burgundy Tree Skirt has a shining 4.7-star average rating on Amazon. A customer named Jessica T. said that it's the "most beautiful tree skirt [she has] ever seen," adding that it's "even more beautiful in person."

This skirt is a top seller from retailers all over the internet as well as with brick-and-mortar stores thanks to the confluence of elegant looks and a fair price.

Pros: Lovely subtle styling, plush velvet material, durable Velcro tabs

Cons: Will not match some interior design schemes

The best affordable tree skirt

The Ivenf Christmas Tree Skirt measures 48-inches in diameter and has a simple but appealing geometric scallop trim.

Measuring 48 inches in diameter, the Ivenf Christmas Tree Skirt is a great midsize tree skirt that should work with most trees standing anywhere from 6 to 8 feet tall. That means it's a skirt you can enjoy year after year, even if your Christmas trees tend to vary in height from one holiday to the next.

The tree skirt is made of rich burgundy-colored polyester that has the look of burlap and features a ring of overlapping scallop trim. It looks great beneath a dark green pine tree and complements wood floors, neutral-colored carpeting, and tile.

If you're looking for a super affordable tree skirt that is actually large enough for trees of standard height, this is it. Don't worry, though, this skirt is only cheap in price. It's actually surprisingly well-made with two layers of fabric and a Velcro-closure.

On Amazon, the Ivenf Christmas Tree Skirt has a 4.9-star rating overall. Even better, the company guarantees a replacement or full refund if you're not satisfied. —Lisa Sabatini

Pros: Great low price; simple but elegant design; good midrange size; full refund offered if not satisfied

Cons: May clash with carpeting that is warm in color

The best large tree skirt

The Kurt Adler Embroidered and Pleated 60-Inch Tree Skirt is almost a full foot larger in diameter than the next biggest one on our list, so it's perfect for a tall tree.

If you've got a big tree, you gotta get a big tree skirt. As a general rule of thumb, a Christmas tree should be at least 6 inches shorter than the ceiling of the room in which it will reside. Or shorter still if a star, angel, or other decorative crown will top it. So a room with an 8-foot ceiling should have a 7- or 7.5-foot tree, a room with 9-foot ceilings can accommodate an eight to eight and a half-foot tree, and so on.

As trees get taller, keep in mind that they also get wider. The average width of a Christmas tree standing 8 feet tall is just under 5 feet wide, so if you will get a tree that tall or taller, you will need quite a large tree skirt to catch its falling needles and simply to look proportionate.

At 5 feet across, the Kurt Adler Embroidered and Pleated Tree Skirt is up to the task of serving those bigger, wider trees. It is made of polyester and has a deep red color punctuated by snowflake designs in varied sizes. The narrow pleated trim caps off an elegantly simple design that looks lovely on all sorts of flooring.

While this is by far the most expensive tree skirt on our list, it's to be expected that the price rises as the size increases. Also remember that the best thing about a big, wide tree and a large tree skirt is the fact that it provides more room for presents.

A customer named Lauren praises this tree skirt's "very high-quality material" and the "linen-like look" of the material. An owner named Carole called it "well made" and a great size and said she looked forward to the skirt adorning her "Christmas tree for years to come."

Pros: Great size for large trees, crisp and attractive design, durable construction

Cons: Rather expensive, no ties or tabs to secure slit

The best Christmas tree toppers

  • When purchasing a new Christmas tree topper, there are several things to keep in mind, which we detail below. I've always enjoyed looking for the most unique, easiest to position, and best value tree toppers for myself and others.
  • Whether you love an angel, traditional star, or something unique, we have the best Christmas tree topper for you.
  • For more Christmas decorations, check out our guides for the best ornaments for your tree and the best tree skirts you can buy.

A Christmas tree topper holds a special place in holiday decorating. It is the crowning touch to the centerpiece of the season, the Christmas tree.

You may love a star like the Bailey family in "It's a Wonderful Life" or use a cherished family heirloom. I tend to change my tree topper every year or so depending on my mood. While I use many of the same ornaments that I have collected every year because they bring back such strong memories, I like switch out different tree toppers.

When purchasing a new topper, there are several things to keep in mind:

Style: Choose a topper that complements the style and profile of your tree. A star or angel looks good on a conical, full tree. A spire or elongated topper is perfect for a slim, pencil tree.

Height: Know the height of your tree and your ceiling. As a rule, the tree topper should have at least 5 inches of space between it and the ceiling. For example:

  • Height of tree: 4 to 5.5 feet
    • Recommended topper height: 5 inches
    • Recommended topper width: 3 inches
  • Height of tree: 6 to 6.5 feet
    • Recommended topper height: 7 inches
    • Recommended topper width: 5 inches
  • Height of tree: 7 to 7.5 feet
    • Recommended topper height: 4 inches
    • Recommended topper width: 4 inches

Support: Determine if your tree can support the weight of your chosen tree topper. Glass toppers are usually the heaviest with paper, plastic, and ribbon toppers the lightest.

Installation: Once you get your topper home, it's time to make sure it is going to stay in place and not tumble to the floor or topple your entire tree. I've had many a tilted topper and even a horizontal tree a couple of times. Both artificial and natural treetops can be reinforced with dowels to make them more sturdy. With artificial trees, several branches can be tied together to support heavier toppers. Use green floral tape to cover any wires or ties to give the tree a more natural look.

Safety: Always think safety first when placing the topper. Use a good stepladder and have someone hold the trunk of the tree in place as you add the topper. If the topper is lighted, use a UL-tested extension cord and weave it through the branches to prevent accidents. Consider using a nonbreakable topper if small children and climbing pets have access to the tree.

I've always enjoyed looking for the most unique, easiest to position, and best value tree toppers for myself and others. Read on in the slides below to discover our top picks in Christmas tree toppers for every decorating style.

The best angel tree topper

Hand-crafted in silk and wool, this Silk Waldorf Angel Tree Topper from Etsy can be custom-made according to the size and hair color you desire.

I am always in awe of the talented people who sell their wares on Etsy, and it is there that I found my Custom Silk Waldorf Angel Tree Topper by artist Holly Shabtai.

Each angel is made with a wool body handcrafted from the fleece of New Mexico sheep and then topped with woolen and silk needle-felted fibers. There are poseable wire arms and wings, and the height can be customized from 10 inches to 22 inches. (For a tree topper, a 10-inch angel works best for the majority of tree heights.) You can work with Holly to select the hair color and accessories that make each angel unique.

While the angel has an opening that fits beautifully over the top branch of a tree, it can also be used as a centerpiece or part of a display. Angels are one of the two most popular tree toppers in the United States.

Nearly every one of Shabtai's reviews on Etsy gives her five stars, many citing her excellent craftsmanship. My angel brings me joy each time I see her ethereal beauty.

Pros: Handmade with natural fibers, available in a range of sizes, customizable, free shipping

Cons: Shipping is one to two weeks after the order is placed

The best star tree topper

The Lenox Glass Star is a classic tree topper that can become an heirloom Christmas piece.

Along with the angel, the star is one of the most popular tree toppers. Stars come in every iteration from simple five-points to intricate designs. The star can be flat or three-dimensional and made from paper, plastic, glass, metal, or wood. The Lenox Glass Star, which is brand new this year, combines frosted glass and metal to create a contemporary but classic star that will be gracing my tree this year

Like many star toppers, the Lenox Star is mounted on a spiral metal base. A spiral or conical base is easily adjusted to accommodate different-size tree branches. The star is 12.5-inches high from base to top tip and created from pieces of frosted glass fitted into a three-dimensional gold wire frame. Behind the glass star is a more contemporary star-burst sculpture made of gold metal. I love the juxtaposition of the two styles.

The star is translucent enough that I can place lights from the tree behind it to provide a glow without the need for a separate cord or outlet.

While I don't plan to return my star, Lenox offers a Breakage Replacement Program that guarantees that an item can be returned within 120 days for a replacement piece or refund.

Pros: Combines contemporary and traditional design, easy to attach to treetop, excellent return policy

Cons: Glass is breakable

The best illuminated tree topper

The Mr. Christmas Revolving Santa Biplane navigates by the bright North Star to help Santa deliver presents for under the tree.

Who couldn't "Believe" after seeing Santa guided by the North Star circling the top of your tree in his biplane as he tows a holiday banner? This Mr. Christmas animated tree topper is one of the newest and cutest illuminated toppers on the market.

I had to get one for my 2-year-old grandson's tree. He loves the movement, the lights, the plane, and of course, Santa. The star is around 8-inches wide and is lit by LED lights. Santa circles in his biplane as he tows a glittery message of "Believe".

The topper easily attaches to the tree with a unique two-band Velcro system. Simply insert Santa's guidewire between the pole and plane, and he is ready to fly. The topper is powered with an AC adapter that is plugged into an outlet and comes with an on/off switch. The topper is 20-inches tall from the base to the point of the star but can be positioned to nestle down in the tree or soar a bit higher.

Santa's biplane is brand new this year, but if you prefer his traditional sleigh, Mr. Christmas has you covered.

Pros: Animated and illuminated, quiet motor, easy to assemble, adjustable to the height of the treetop, 90-day warranty

Cons: Star will not illuminate separately

The best traditional glass tree topper

The Pier 1 Mercury Glass Finial Tree Topper puts the final exclamation point on your holiday decor.

If you are looking for an elegant finish to your tree decorations, look no further than the Pier 1 Mercury Glass Finial Tree Topper. Following the tradition of the German-made, hand-blown glass finials of the 19th century, this piece adds shimmer, height, and refined taste to any tree.

This new topper style from Pier 1 is handcrafted from mercury glass, embellished with a bit of raised glass glittery mistletoe, and measures 15.75 inches in height and 3.54 inches in diameter. It is interesting to note that the glass, also known as silvered glass, does not contain mercury or silver. It is simply clear glass that is mold-blown with a double wall and coated on the inside with a silvery component.

The finial slips over the center branch of the tree to catch the twinkle of the tree lights. I have several tree topper finials that I have collected and used over the years. When I change tree themes, I group the finials on a tabletop or mantle for a holiday arrangement.

Pros: Beautiful, lightweight, easy to place on the tree, can be used for tabletop decoration

Cons: Fragile

The best unique tree topper

What could be more unique than topping the tree with a personalized Family Name Tree Topper?

I know that when I want something unique, I should turn to Etsy, and that's where I found Daisy Santiago's Blue Brides Family Name Tree Topper.

I wanted to give a newlywed couple something special for their first Christmas tree together, and this topper did not disappoint. Handmade in North Carolina from lightweight aluminum wire, each topper is customized to the name you desire.

Most of the toppers measure about 7.5 inches to 8 inches wide and around 4.5 inches tall and are attached to a 4-inch spiral base. The base slips easily over the top branch of the tree. Since these are custom-made, you can choose almost any color of wire from traditional silver or gold; to red, pink, or blue; to my personal favorites, copper or rose gold.

The work will be ready in three to five days and shipped free directly to your home. Prices vary depending upon the length of the last name.

Pros: Custom-made for each order, lightweight, easy to install

Cons: Creation and shipping can take up to two weeks

OL-Peloton profile

  • Peloton, a popular fitness company, offers spinning and other classes both in its studios and streamed into people's homes.
  • Their trainers are celebrities of sorts, with robust social media followings.
  • One New York City Peloton instructor, Oliver Lee, walked a through a day in his life, from what he has for breakfast to how he prepares for, and recovers from, classes.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more.

Meet 28-year-old Oliver Lee, a Peloton instructor who moved to New York from London about four years ago.

Lee's been a fitness professional since he was 22. He started as a personal trainer at a commercial gym in London and moved to New York to seek more opportunities in the fitness world.

Currently, he lives in NoMad, which is short for North of Madison Square Park.

Lee now works as a Tread instructor for Peloton's non-spin classes, like running, strength training, and bootcamps at their New York City studio.

Lee started working with Peloton after becoming friends with other instructors, who encouraged him to apply.  "It was a very organic process," he said.

The fitness company has two New York City studios, one cycling and one for other workouts like the ones Lee teaches. It also streams those classes to people who own its $2,245 bikes across the country.

Lee has a rescue dog named Charlee, a mini poodle mix.

Charlee is about a year old. She's very energetic and loves to go for walks, which means Lee has to keep a consistent routine of getting out and about during the day.

"Charlee has non-negotiables and keeps me on schedule," Lee told Insider.

A few days a week, Lee wakes up at 4:30 a.m. to teach 6 a.m. classes.

On those days, he'll usually let Charlee sleep and save the walk for after his first class of the day.

But on this day, a Thursday, his classes are only in the evenings, so he sleeps until 8 a.m.

"Charlee is happy to wake up late, and we'll typically go for a longer walk," Lee said.

A favorite spot is along the High Line, an elevated park built along a former railroad track on the west side of Manhattan.

He has the same breakfast every day — eggs on a gluten-free everything bagel, with matcha tea.

After his walk, Lee fuels up for the rest of his day with a classic New York egg-and-bagel breakfast and matcha tea with a splash of oat milk. His preferred bagel is the gluten-free everything bagel from Trader Joe's.

Lee isn't gluten-free, but said these bagels are just really good, and the perfect size for his morning meal.

He also adds a side of his favorite hot sauce, Cholula, which he said he "puts on everything."

Around noon, Lee heads to the dog park and picks a matcha latte.

Matcha, a type of green tea, is packed with antioxidants in addition to a boost of caffeine, believed to boost energy and focus as well as supporting overall health.

Lee is a huge fan of sweets, and will often grab something on the way home from the dog park.

"I definitely try to promote a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Don't be afraid to have a treat or something that tastes good," Lee said. "When you're working out hard, you have to reward yourself."

Lee's an especially big fan of cookies.

So big,  in fact, that he hosts a regular live video series on his Facebook page called "Ollie's Cookie Club" where he and Charlee try out cookie recipes and answer questions from fans.

Around 2 or 3 p.m., after Charlee settles in for his nap, Lee takes a Citibike to the Peloton headquarters.

Lee uses the city's bike share system to commute from his apartment to Peloton Tread's studio in the West Village.

Once at the headquarters, Lee does some work before his evening classes.

This includes structuring the content of his classes and making playlists, which Lee crafts 24 hours before each class.

He also manages his social media accounts — Peloton trainers are celebrities of sorts with robust followings they try to keep engaged and motivated.

"Every one of the instructors is so unique, has their own skill set and personality as a fitness professional. You have to really love what you do, and that has to come across" in your posts, said Lee, who has more than 12,000 followers on Instagram.

Once prep is done, Lee takes a few hours of downtime and a late lunch before his evening work begins.

If he heads back home, he might catch up on a recent favorite Netflix show like Ozark and Narcos.

Then, it's showtime.

In the evening, Lee hits the studio to lead his 7 p.m. class in front of his live audience, both in-studio and at home.

When he enters the room, there's a countdown to the start of the class, so producers can sync the audio and video to the right time. Once the music starts, Lee is ready to sweat on camera.

While the classes can be challenging, he added that they're designed to be accessible for all skill and fitness levels.

The content of the classes varies from week to week, Lee said, including strength training, bootcamp-style workouts, and running

Lee does every workout with the class from start to finish.

A crucial part of Peloton's programming is that its instructors do the workouts along with the class, and Lee said that's all part of the fun and intensity of the job.

"It's a really fun experience, you feel the emotions, the tough parts, the recovery, the bits where you have to dig deep," Lee said.

"Although we're fitness authorities, we're also normal people, and we're there with you," he added. "I think that really makes it a more bonding experience because you're all going through it together."

Because he stresses his muscles so much, Lee does a lot of recovery work. Here, he tests out hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Lee told Insider he also stretches regularly, goes to physical therapy twice a week, and occasionally uses cryotherapy, an extreme-cold treatment used by star athletes like LeBron James to ease sore, overworked muscles.

He also, of course, sleeps. After classes, he heads home to rest for another busy day.
