Goodbye secretaries: This map shows the fastest dying jobs in every US state

fastest disappearing job in every state map

Secretary jobs are disappearing.

These roles, which were once considered stable positions for women without college degrees, have taken a significant downturn over the last nine years. Labor Department data indicate the US has shed more than 2.1 million administrative and office support jobs since 2000, The Washington Post reported

But this change extends beyond administrative assistants — it also includes the disappearance of telemarketers, substitute teachers, and farmworkers.

The workforce is changing in every state in America. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment Statistics program, we compared total employment levels for occupations in each state in May 2013 and May 2018, the latter being the most recently available data.

We found the occupation with at least 5,000 employees in May 2013 that had the biggest percent drop in employment over the five-year period. Since we are interested in how specific occupations have changed over time, we excluded the "all other" occupational catch-all groups used by the BLS.

Here are the fastest-disappearing jobs in every US state.

Ivan De Luce contributed to an earlier version of this post.

Apple could release 5 new iPhones next year — here's what we know about them so far (AAPL)

Apple iPhone 11

Those in the market for a new iPhone next year may have more options than ever before to choose from.

There's a chance Apple could release five new iPhones in 2020: four versions of its flagship iPhone and a sequel to the low-cost iPhone SE from 2016. That's according to Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with TF International Securities known for his Apple product predictions, whose comments were recently reported by 9to5Mac and MacRumors among other outlets.

If Kuo's forecast turns out to be accurate, it would represent a major shakeup for Apple's iPhone product strategy. For the past four years, Apple has debuted three new iPhones. Before that, from 2013 through 2015, Apple gave iPhone shoppers two new options to choose from.

But the release of five new iPhones in a single year would signal a notable shift in Apple's approach that more closely mirrors that of Android rivals like Samsung, which typically launch multiple phones in various sizes at different prices throughout the year.  Apple did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Here's a breakdown of the five different iPhone models Apple is rumored to announce next year.

A 5.4-inch iPhone with two cameras

This isn't the first time Kuo has predicted that Apple may release an iPhone in a new 5.4-inch size next year.

At first, it seemed as if this smaller-sized iPhone could be a successor to the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro. But Kuo's newest report suggests that it may in fact be a lower-end model.

While all of Apple's 2020 iPhones are expected to have an OLED display and support for 5G, this version may only have two cameras instead of three, according to Kuo.

If Apple's current iPhone lineup is any indication of the future, the notion that the 5.4-inch iPhone would only have two cameras suggests it could be less expensive than other rumored models for next year. The iPhone 11, for example, has a dual camera instead of the iPhone 11 Pro's triple-lens camera and costs $300 less.

A 6.1-inch iPhone with two cameras

Apple could launch another version of that dual-lens iPhone with a larger 6.1-inch screen next year as well, says Kuo. That would make it the same size as the iPhone 11 and last year's iPhone XR.

This phone, like the others Apple is rumored to release next year, would also support 5G connectivity and would feature an OLED screen. But again, since it only has two cameras instead of three, there's a chance this could be another version of next year's cheaper iPhone in a larger size.

A 6.1-inch iPhone with three cameras

A new 6.1-inch iPhone with three cameras could be coming next year, according to Kuo. Since it will reportedly have a triple-lens camera, this could be the successor to the iPhone 11 Pro.

This phone, like the less expensive models, would also be capable of connecting to 5G networks and is expected to come with an OLED screen.

Apple is also expected to add a 3-D camera that would improve the experience of using augmented reality apps to next year's iPhone, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. But it's unclear if that 3-D camera would come to all of Apple's new iPhones or just certain models.

A 6.7-inch iPhone with three cameras

Kuo suggests that a bigger 6.7-inch iPhone with three cameras could be coming in 2020 as well. That would make it the largest screen Apple has ever put on an iPhone. The current iPhone 11 Pro Max, for example, has a 6.5-inch display.

Since Apple's current iPhone 11 Pro comes in two sizes, it's possible that this 6.7-inch iPhone could be the larger-size option for next year's iPhone 12 Pro.

A new version of the less expensive iPhone SE

Apple may finally release a follow-up to the $400 iPhone SE it released in 2016, according to reports from Kuo and Japanese newspaper Nikkei Asian Review.

The phone could launch in the first half of 2020 and may resemble the iPhone 8 with a 4.7-inch display. It may also run on the same processor as the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.

elon musk day 2

Hello and Happy Friday!

It's finally December, which means a busy holiday travel season overlapping with potentially nasty weather. Add to that mix a shortened holiday season for all of your online shopping to arrive, and it's the transportation team's Super Bowl!

If this is your first time reading Shifting Gears, and you don't want to miss a single story every week, sign up to have this sent straight to your inbox here.

What did we miss? Let me know at grapier@businessinsider.com. Let's dive in:

Uber's long-awaited safety report is finally out

The ride-hailing giant on Thursday evening disclosed nearly 6,000 sexual assaults in 2017 and 2018 combined. The 84-page report also maintained that 99.9% of trips were safe.

"It's important to understand the scale of Uber's business in interpreting this data," the report said. "This year, nearly 4 million Uber trips happened every day in the US — more than 45 rides every second."

You can read the executive summary here. And the full report here (pdf).

Elon Musk heads to court

Tesla's chief executive was back in court this week, this time for a defamation lawsuit brought by the British cave explorer he called a "pedo guy" on Twitter back in 2018 after the dramatic rescue of a Thai soccer team trapped in a flooded cave.

During an explosive two days on the witness stand, Musk defended his tweet, saying it wasn't intended in the literal sense of "pedophile."

Vernon Unsworth, the target of the attack, said the sting of the ordeal remained with him. "Feels very raw," he said in his first day of testimony. "Feel humiliated, ashamed, dirtied."

"I feel very vulnerable," he added. "It hurts to talk about it."

United calls for a crew change

Oscar Munoz will step down as chief executive of United Airlines in May, the airline said this week. He'll transition to chairman of the board and Scott Kirby, the company's president who was recruited from American Airlines in 2016, will take over as CEO.

United has seen strong performance this year under Munoz's leadership, despite strong industry headwinds. Still, the 2017 scandal in which police dragged a doctor off of an oversold flight — and the airlines' response — is likely to be another hallmark of his time at the helm.

GM inks a big battery deal

General Motors and LG Chem said this week that they'll form a joint-venture to build a new battery factory in Ohio. The 50-50 collaboration is expected to total as much as $2.3 billion in investment from the US' top automaker and the South Korean energy company.

The new plant is anticipated to create 1,100 jobs and break ground in 2020.

Best hotel credit cards 4x3

The best hotel credit cards of 2019:

"What is the best hotel credit card?" is probably the question I get asked the most. Everyone wants to earn rewards for a dream vacation, and with so many options out there, it's hard to choose or qualify the "best" card.

When considering a hotel credit card, it's important to factor in your travel goals: Are you looking to stay at a five-star resort in the Maldives? Or do you want to be able to book a cheap staycation once or twice a year without paying an exorbitant annual fee?

It's also important to consider the card's welcome bonus, recurring benefits, ease of earning free nights via credit card spending, category bonuses, and elite status perks (if any). With that in mind, here are my picks for the best hotel credit cards.

Keep in mind that we're focusing on the rewards and perks that make these credit cards great options, not things like interest rates and late fees, which will far outweigh the value of any points or miles. It's important to practice financial discipline when using credit cards by paying your balances in full each month, making payments on time, and only spending what you can afford to pay back.

Annual bonus: Weekend night reward after renewal, plus an additional night after $60,000 spent in a calendar year.

Complimentary elite status: Hilton Honors Diamond

Annual fee: $450

The Hilton Honors Aspire Card is hands-down the best co-branded hotel credit card out there. For starters, with the 150,000-point welcome bonus, you can book upwards of 30 free nights, depending on the hotel category. But high-end redemptions aren't too far off, either. For example, with these points you can cover two free nights at the Hilton Waikoloa Village or the LondonHouse Chicago.

The card comes with top-tier Hilton Diamond status, which gets you free breakfast, lounge access, and a 100% bonus on points earned via paid stays.

The Hilton Honors Aspire Card also offers a free weekend night reward when you renew your card, plus an extra free night when you spend $60,000 in a calendar year. Annual bonus: Free anniversary night at IHG hotels worldwide. Plus, earn 10,000 bonus points after you spend $20,000 on purchases and make one additional purchase each account anniversary year

Category bonuses: 25x points when you stay at an IHG hotel, 2x points at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants, and 1x points on all other purchases

Complimentary elite status: Platinum elite status

Annual fee: $89

In exchange for an $89 annual fee, cardholders get access to impressive perks like complimentary Platinum elite status, a fourth night free on award bookings, and a $100 Global Entry or $85 TSA PreCheck fee credit every four years. Additionally, cardholders earn a free night every year, which can be used at any IHG hotel worldwide that costs up to 40,000 points per night.

IHG free nights range from 10,000 - 70,000 points per night. With 80,000 points from the IHG Rewards Club Premier card, you could cover eight free nights. Additionally, IHG offers rates as low as 5,000 points per night through the PointBreaks promotion.

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card

Welcome bonus: 150,000 Hilton Honors bonus points after you spend $3,000 in purchases in the first four months. Plus, earn a $100 Hilton statement credit after your first purchase in the first three months. Offer ends December 31, 2019.

Annual bonus: Weekend night reward after you spend $15,000 in a calendar year

Category bonuses: 12x points at Hilton hotels, 6x points at restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations in the US, 3x points on all other purchases

Complimentary elite status: Hilton Gold status (upgrade to Hilton Diamond after spending $40,000 in a calendar year)

Annual fee: $95

With free nights at Hilton ranging from 5,000 - 95,000 points, the current welcome bonus on the Hilton Honors Surpass Card will cover one to 30 free nights. Add in the free weekend night and you're looking at even more free nights. Of course, not everyone is looking to redeem their points at a low-category hotel. Even if you opt for a top-tier redemption, you've got at least two free nights covered with this welcome bonus (assuming one is a weekend night).

The reason why the Hilton Honors Surpass card earns a high spot on this list of top hotel cards is because of how easy it is to earn a free night via credit card spending. While some cards require upwards of $40,000 for a free night at a top-tier hotel, it takes just $31,667 on the Hilton Honors Surpass card. Add in the generous category bonuses on everyday spending, and earning free nights becomes even easier.

The Hilton Honors Surpass card doesn't slack off when it comes to travel perks, either. Cardholders receive instant Gold elite status, with the ability to upgrade to Diamond after spending $40,000 in a calendar year. Hilton Gold status perks are equivalent to what most other reward programs offer top-tier elites: Free breakfast, room upgrades based on availability, bonus points, and the possibility of club lounge access (assuming you've been upgraded to a Club room). This is a solid card for those who want elite status perks and the ability to rack up free nights quickly.

The World of Hyatt Credit Card

Welcome bonus: 25,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first three months, plus an additional 25,000 points after you spend $6,000 total on purchases within the first six months

Annual bonus: Free night at a Category 1 - 4 hotel for renewing your card, plus another Category 1 - 4 night if you send $15,000 during a card membership year

Category bonuses: 4x at Hyatt hotels and Exhale locations; 2x points on local transit commuting, restaurants, gym memberships and airline tickets purchased directly from the airline

Complimentary elite status: Hyatt Discoverist. Plus earn 5 qualifying night credits toward your next tier status every year and 2 additional qualifying night credits every time you spend $5,000 on your card.

Annual fee: $95

Hyatt requires 5,000 - 40,000 points for a free night, depending on the category. That makes the sign-up bonus from the World of Hyatt Credit Card redeemable for 1 - 10 free nights.

Hyatt has one of the best hotel rewards programs left, and it's expanding rapidly. The World of Hyatt Credit Card is a great addition to your wallet if you're looking for a solid sign-up bonus and recurring benefits. The current bonus is good for a free night at a top-tier hotel like the Muse Saint-Tropez or up to 10 nights at lower-category hotels. In addition, the card offers useful category bonuses and free nights issued annually based on card renewal.

The World of Hyatt Card comes with free Discoverist status, which offers benefits like premium internet and 10% bonus points on paid stays. Cardholders aiming for higher status will appreciate the 5 qualifying night credits issued every year and the ability to earn two additional credits per $5,000 spent on the card.

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card

Welcome bonus: 75,000 bonus points after you spend $3,000 in the first three months

Annual bonus: Free night (for hotels at or under 50,000 points per night) every year after your card account anniversary

Category bonuses: 6x points at Marriott hotels, 3x points at US restaurants and on flights booked directly with airlines (2x points on everything else)

Complimentary elite status: Marriott Gold status (earn Platinum after spending $75,000 in a calendar year)

Annual fee: $450

At 7,500 - 85,000 points per night, you can book up to 10 free nights at a Marriott hotel with this welcome offer. When Marriott implements new peak/off-peak pricing in September 2019, this range will widen ever further. Off-peak are set to start at 5,000 points per night while a top-tier Category 8 property could go as high as 100,000 points.

While the Bonvoy Brilliant's annual fee is $450, cardholders receive a lot of bang for their buck. The card includes a $100 Global Entry or $85 TSA PreCheck credit, a $300 annual Marriott Bonvoy statement credit, Priority Pass Select membership, and a $100 credit when you book an eligible two-night minimum stay at a Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis hotel.

Cardholders will receive Gold Marriott status out of the gate, plus 15 nights toward the next status tier. Overall, this is a solid card for travelers who stay with Marriott frequently and want a leg-up in the elite status race. Even those who only stay with Marriott a few times a year will find value in all the added perks.

Wyndham Rewards Visa Card

Welcome bonus: 15,000 bonus points after your first purchase or first balance transfer

Annual bonus: N/A

Category bonuses: 3x points at Wyndham hotels; 2x points on gas, utility, and grocery purchases.

Complimentary elite status: Gold

Annual fee: $0

Wyndham Rewards is a great program for families who need a little more space on their vacations. Most Wyndham properties are essentially condos, offering multiple bedroom, full kitchen, and washer/dryer. These amenities are incredibly useful for families trying to save points while still traveling comfortable.

A free night at any Wyndham hotel is either 7,000 or 15,000 points per night. The card pays out 2 bonus points per $1 spent on common spending categories like gas, groceries and utilities.

Radisson Rewards Premier Visa Signature Card

Welcome bonus: 50,000 points after your first purchase, plus 35,000 points once you spend $2,500 on your card within the first 90 days

Annual bonus: 40,000 renewal points each year when you renew your card. Earn one free night for each $10,000 in spend (up to $30,000).

Category bonuses: 10x points at Radisson hotels

Complimentary elite status: Gold

Annual fee: $75

Radisson Rewards is probably the most underrated hotel rewards program out there. I would rank this card higher on the list, except that there are *only* 1,175 Radisson hotels around the world. That means there are fewer places to redeem free nights, even if earning them is so easy with the Radisson Rewards Premier Visa Signature Card.

It takes just $1,800 - $14,000 worth of non-bonus category spending on this card to earn a free night. To give you an idea the caliber of hotel Radisson has abroad, there's the Mayfair London which can go for upwards of $600 per night or 70,000 points. The Radisson Blu Cannes and Radisson Blu Nice both have rates of over $400 per night in the summer but can be booked with 70,000 points.

Non-hotel brand cards to maximize rewards on hotel stays

If you're loyal to a specific hotel brand, having a co-branded card makes a lot of sense, as it can get you complimentary elite status, bonus points, and other perks when you stay with that chain.

But if you care less about brand loyalty and more about earning as many points as possible, a general travel rewards credit card like one of these could make more sense:

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve earn bonus points on travel and dining (2x on the Preferred, 3x on the Reserve), and you can transfer your Chase points to Hyatt, IHG, and Marriott, among other partners. The Sapphire Preferred has a $95 annual fee, and the Reserve has a $450 annual fee (but comes with a $300 annual travel credit that applies to everything from Uber rides to hotel stays).

If you don't want to keep track of bonus categories, the Capital One Venture card is a particularly good option. It earns 2x miles on all purchases. The card has a $95 annual fee that's waived the first year.

There's also the Platinum card from American Express, which offers complimentary Gold status with both Hilton and Marriott. Plus, if you have the Amex Platinum you can earn 5 points per dollar on Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts stays. These are stays at luxury properties, and your reservation includes benefits like complimentary upgrades, free breakfast, and property credits. The Amex Platinum has a $550 annual fee, but it easily can be worth it thanks to benefits like this.

  • You can easily replicate the recipes — including a classic hot toddy, eggnog cocktail, and a spicy, smoky margarita — at home with just a few steps.
  • Here are 15 festive cocktails perfect for holiday entertaining.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

The cold winter months are finally here, making us want to curl up with a hot toddy or a mug of mulled wine by the fireplace.

While cocktails can make for a cozy night in, it's also never too early to start planning the drinks menu for your holiday soirée or to make reservations at a restaurant with its own delicious drinks.

From chile-infused concoctions to beverages mixed with dashes of cinnamon and wasabi, these cold-weather cocktails certainly bring the heat. Plus, since many of these recipes come straight from top restaurants and bars across America and Mexico, they're sure to impress even the pickiest of dinner or holiday party guests.

Here are 15 spicy cocktails perfect for holiday entertaining.

Chocolate lovers, listen up. The After All cocktail is a chocolatey treat with just a hint of spice, featuring Mezcal, Bouvery CV chocolate vodka, Grand Brulot, tangy orange marmalade, and bitters.

The classic combination of chocolate, orange, and a subtle touch of heat makes this cocktail from Bagatelle NYC the perfect holiday drink.

After All Recipe:

1 ounce Mezcal

1 ounce Bouvery CV chocolate vodka

1 ounce Grand Brulot

1 ounce orange marmalade

2 drops Scrappy's firewater

Shake and serve in a martini glass

The Cozy Sweater from 1833 Kitchen & Bar in Aurora, New York, provides a twist on a hot toddy.

This cold-weather drink certainly lives up to its name and pairs perfectly with 1833 Kitchen & Bar's eclectic menu of regional, sustainably sourced cuisine.

Cozy Sweater Recipe:

8 ounces cup of Earl Grey tea

1 shot of Amaretto

Pour the tea into a teacup or a clear, handled glass and mix in Amaretto shot

The Hiroki Sky, from Queensyard in Hudson Yards, New York City, is a spicy cocktail inspired by a book written by Japanese Chef Hiroki Yoshitake.

This cocktail brings the heat with Toki whiskey, sweet wine, white peach soda, lemon extract, and foam. It is served with white chocolate and wasabi ice cream.

Hiroki Sky Recipe:

2 ounces Toki whiskey

1 ounce sweet wine

½ ounce white peach soda

½ ounce lemon juice

An eggnog martini is a more upscale spin on the classic holiday drink.

Making a creamy cocktail with eggnog takes the festive drink to a whole other level. A crowd-pleaser at bars and parties across the country, it's no wonder that eggnog is such a holiday staple.

Eggnog Martini Recipe:

3 ounces eggnog

1 ounce vanilla vodka

1 ounce amaretto liqueur

Sprinkle nutmeg over the finished drink

Inspired by brothel owner Belle Brezing, the Diabla Burdel from Belle’s Cocktail House in Lexington, Kentucky, is a new take on the classic Sazerac cocktail with just the right amount of heat.

movie releases 2020

1. "Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)" will spotlight the DCEU's best onscreen character in years.

Release date: February 7, 2020

What it's about: Margot Robbie reprises her role as Harley Quinn after 2016's DCEU disaster "Suicide Squad"— but don't expect to see the rest of the posse here. "Birds of Prey" follows the transformation of the beloved Batman antihero after severing ties with the Joker. It will also feature characters like Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and the Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who typically anchor the Birds of Prey girl squad in the comics.

Why to see it: Robbie's delightfully unhinged take on Harley Quinn was widelyconsideredthe best thing about "Suicide Squad," an otherwise objectively bad movie — but critics and fans were disappointed with how the film insisted on reducing and fetishizing the character.

"Give her a solo film and a girlfriend. Explore her contradictions. Pass her some gasoline, a match and let the lady watch the world burn her way,"Rolling Stone's David Fear wrote.

Instead, Robbie pitched "an R-rated girl gang film" and signed on as co-producer. It was also written and directed by women, Christina Hodson and Cathy Yan. It's not exactly a standalone, but hopefully Robbie is given the space to flex her "bubblegum savagery"— and the all-female team is able to right the wrongs of its predecessor.  — Callie Ahlgrim

2. "The Photograph" is a promising romantic story heading to theaters in time for Valentine's Day.

Release date: February 14, 2020

What it's about: When a famous photographer dies, her estranged daughter Mae is left with a safety deposit box containing revelatory secrets about her mother's early life. Mae sparks an unexpected romance with a journalist seeking to write about her mother, leading to  a sweeping love story about forgiveness and finding the courage to seek the truth, no matter where it may lead you."

Why to see it: This romantic movie is premiering on Valentine's Day, and based on the trailer it looks like a truly magical love story.

Featuring some powerhouse actors, including Issa Rae (cocreator and star of "Insecure") and Lakeith Stanfield ("Atlanta,""Knives Out"), we're expecting dynamite onscreen chemistry. Plus, it's one of the only major studio movies coming out next year that was written and directed by a woman, in this case rising star Stella Meghie. Kim Renfro

3. Pixar's "Onward" has a delightfully weird premise and a winning cast.

Release date: March 6, 2020

What it's about: Two teenage elf brothers live in a magical world that has, over time, lost its sense of magic. But when the younger brother turns 16, their mom reveals an unexpected pre-arranged gift from their dead father: a wizard staff that will allow them to bring him back for one day. Unfortunately, having never used magic before, something goes wrong and they only manage to bring back his bottom half. An adventure to fix the mistake within 24 hours ensues.

Why to see it: Look, this may seem like the wackiest, trippiest premise for a feel-good animated movie — but it's Pixar, Chris Pratt, and Tom Holland. Literally what could go wrong? If this film studio has managed to get you all weepy about fish, robots, toys, monsters, rats, dinosaurs, cars, and a handmade dumpling, there's no doubt they can somehow get you emotionally invested in a pair of pants. Callie Ahlgrim

4. "A Quiet Place: Part II" is a sequel to the 2018 film directed by John Krasinski.

Release date: March 20, 2020

What it's about: A sequel to the 2018 horror film "A Quiet Place," the new movie will follow the remaining members of the Abbott family as they fight to survive amid hostile aliens that hunt by sound.

Why to see it: The original film was widely considered a modern horror masterpiece, and writer/director/star John Krasinski was praised in particular. Even though (spoiler) Krasinski's character is dead, it'll be worth following the remaining members of the family as they try to survive — and likely encounter plenty of scary aliens along the way. Libby Torres

5. The live-action "Mulan" is making some changes from the original animated feature that could make it Disney's best remake.

Release date: March 27, 2020

What it's about: An adaptation of Disney's 1998 animated movie, "Mulan" follows a young woman who disguises herself as a man, takes her father's place in war, and saves China. The cast includes Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Yoson An, Jet Li, and Jason Scott Lee.

Why to see it: While some may be bummed the live-action adaptation doesn't appear to have Mulan's dragon friend Mushu or any of Disney's original songs, we're excited "Mulan" looks like it will be a grounded drama that focuses on war and sacrifice. Original Mushu animator Tom Bancroft told Inisder he hopes to see more of the relationship between Mulan and her father in the new adaptation if Mushu isn't present in the movie. Kirsten Acuna

You can see the cast of "Mulan" and who they're playing here

6. "No Time to Die" is supposed to be Daniel Craig's final outing as Bond.

Release date: April 8, 2020

What it's about: The 25th Bond film shows Bond attempting to take a break in Jamaica. Naturally, he gets roped back into working when he's asked to help rescue a kidnapped scientist. This leads to Bond facing off against villain Safin (Rami Malek), who has "dangerous new technology."

Why to see it: Daniel Craig says his fifth Bond film is his last outing as 007. We're most excited to to see what "little spices" Emmy winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge ("Fleabag") added to the script after being brought onto the film.

"No Time to Die" is also supposed to give an update to its Bond women to make them feel "more fully realized" than some of the female characters in the past. Kirsten Acuna

You can watch the trailer for the film here.

7. "Black Widow" is Scarlett Johansson's first standalone Marvel movie.

Release date: May 1, 2020

What it's about: Even though Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff story came to a conclusion in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," fans can see the Marvel star back in action as the beloved character in her first (and long overdue) standalone prequel movie.

Why to see it: Johansson has already said that "Black Widow" will address themes like "self-forgiveness" and "family." Based on the first trailer, which was released in December 2019, the movie will include intense action sequences and give devoted fans a look at Natasha's life in Budapest before she joined the Avengers.

The star-studded cast includes "Stranger Things" star David Harbour, "Little Women's"Florence Pugh, "The Favourite's"Rachel Weisz, and "The Handmaid's Tale" actor O-T Fagbenle. Olivia Singh

You can watch the trailer for the movie here

8. "The Fast and the Furious 9" will bring back Charlize Theron and should feature Helen Mirren racing a car.

Release date: May 20, 2020

What it's about: We don't know much about the plot of the ninth installment yet, but we do know John Cena, Michael Rooker, and Cardi B. are among those joining the "Fast" fam in next year's sequel. As well, Charlize Theron is back as the villain Cipher along with Helen Mirren, who reprises her role as the mother to Deckard, Owen, and Hattie Shaw.

Why to see it: Fast cars, explosions, and Vin Diesel likely saving the world from some heinous plot once again? Sign us up!

Diesel and the "Fast" fam have been sharing weekly updates from movie's set on Instagram and it looks like we're finally going to see Mirren get behind the wheel of a car in London, something the actress has been wanting to do since joining the franchise. We're ready! The crew recently finished filming the ninth film in the saga in the city where the franchise started, Los Angeles. We're expecting this to be one of the year's biggest films. — Kirsten Acuna

9. Gal Gadot returns as beloved DC superhero Wonder Woman in "Wonder Woman 1984."

Release date: June 5, 2020

What it's about: Following the success of 2017's "Wonder Woman," which earned a critics score of 93% and an audience rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot will team up again for a sequel set in the '80s.

Why to see it: This time, fans can expect to see Gadot rocking a brand new Wonder Woman suit, and the introduction of two characters from the comics — villain Cheetah/Barbara Minerva (played by Kristen Wiig) and foe Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal).

In addition, Chris Pine (who portrayed Steve Trevor) will return, but it's unclear how that's possible since the character sacrificed himself in 2017's "Wonder Woman."— Olivia Singh

10. Ryan Reynolds got fans at New York Comic Con excited for his video game movie called "Free Guy."

Release date: July 3, 2020

What it's about: A bank teller named Guy (played by Ryan Reynolds) gets robbed multiple times daily. When he finally realizes that's absurd, Guy learns that he's a non-playable character in a video game.

Why to see it: The extra star power of Reynolds with Emmy winner Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve"), Joe Keery ("Stranger Things"), and "Thor: Ragnarok" director Taika Waititi make the movie's original concept doubly intriguing. The first footage we saw for the movie made quite a stir at New York Comic Con in October. — Kirsten Acuna

You can read more about the movie here.

11. Christopher Nolan's next big event movie, "Tenet," drops next summer.

Release date: July 17, 2020

What it's about: Director Christopher Nolan's movies are often surrounded by intrigue and "Tenet's" no different. When a secret teaser played in theaters in front of "Hobbs and Shaw" this summer, Warner Bros. simply confirmed it's set in "the world of international espionage."

Why to see it: Like every big-budget Nolan movie, we expect it to be an event that needs to be seen on the big screen. The film itself is using a mixture of IMAX and 70mm cameras. Though we still don't know much about the film itself, it has quite the cast. John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Michael Caine all star. — Kirsten Acuna

12. Emily Blunt and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will embark on a thrilling adventure in "Jungle Cruise."

Release date: July 24, 2020

What it's about: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (who went from a WWE champion to a blockbuster movie star) will team up with "A Quiet Place" actor Emily Blunt for "Jungle Cruise," inspired by Disneyland's iconic theme park ride of the same name. Johnson will portray a boat captain who takes people on tours and Blunt will play a wealthy explorer looking to head upriver.

Why to see it: This is the first time the two A-listers have costarred in a movie, and the trailer for "Jungle Cruise" promises a thrilled, adventure-filled movie for the whole family. You can expect to see the main characters encounter explosions, rocky waters, and bad guys along their journey.

"American Crime Story's"Edgar Ramirez, actor and comedian Jack Whitehall, "El Camino's"Jesse Plemons, and "Billions" star Paul Giamatti will also appear in "Jungle Cruise."— Olivia Singh

13. "The Last Duel" puts Matt Damon and Ben Affleck back together on the big screen.

Release date: December 18, 2020

What it's about: The 14th century period drama follows two knights (played by Matt Damon and Adam Driver) whose loyalty is tested by a young woman (Jodie Comer).

Why to see it: Ben Affleck and Damon are reuniting in this Christmas movie with Ridley Scott behind the director's chair. Not only do they both star, but the duo also wrote the script along with Nicole Holofcener. They're joined by an impressive cast that includes Driver and Comer. — Kirsten Acuna

14. "West Side Story" is a remake of the classic musical.

Release date: December 18, 2020

What it's about: This remake of the beloved stage musical (which later became a 1961 film) follows two teenagers, Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler), as they fall in love, despite their affiliations with rival street gangs, in 1950s New York.

Why to see it: The music and choreography of the original production is nothing short of spectacular, and Stephen Spielberg's version will likely live up the glory of its predecessors. But more importantly, the themes "West Side Story" deals with — racism, police brutality, and violence — are still all too relevant today. Especially given filmmakers' dedication to casting people of color for traditionally POC roles, "West Side Story" could be more timely now than ever. Libby Torres

15. "Dune" has a dynamite cast and creative team, setting it up as our most-anticipated sci-fi movie of 2020.

Release date: December 18, 2020

What it's about: "Dune" is a cult-classic 1965 sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert, and it was notably adapted into a divisive David Lynch film in 1984. Telling a sprawling story of an interplanetary saga set far in the future and focusing on feuding families fighting for control of valuable resources.

Why to see it: The movie's director, Denis Villeneuve, helmed two of the past decade's most memorable films (Oscar-winners "Arrival" and "Blade Runner 2049"). Music legend Hans Zimmer ("The Lion King,""Gladiator,""Inception") is set to craft the movie's score.

On top of those two promising creatives, "Dune" has a truly remarkable lineup of actors.  Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin are just several of the many stars we know are set to appear in this movie. We can't wait to see how it all comes together. Kim Renfro

pearl harbor then and now

  • The Japanese navy attacked the US fleet at Pearl Harbor 78 years ago, bringing the US into World War II with a devastating blow.
  • Now it's possible to compare Pearl Harbor's idyllic settings with the scenes on that "day of infamy" nearly 80 years ago.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

On December 7, 1941, the US naval fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii suffered a devastating attack from the air and sea.

The Japanese assault began at 7:48 a.m., resulting in the death of 2,402 Americans, numerous injuries, the sinking of four battleships and damage to many more.

Surprised US service members who normally may have slept in on that Sunday morning or enjoyed some recreation instead found themselves fighting for their lives.

In 2013, the US Navy remembered the "day of infamy"with a series of photographs that compared scenes from that horrifying day to the present.

The photos, prepared by Navy Public Affairs Support Element West, Det. Hawaii, were accompanied by a nearly five-minute video.

Here are the photos:

ringling bros circus

  • The Ringling Bros. founded their circus in the late 1800s and later combined it with the Barnum & Bailey Circus to form the "Greatest Show on Earth."
  • The seven Ringling brothers and one sister would later amass a considerable fortune, earning them the title of one of the richest families in America.
  • Here's the fascinating story behind the Ringling empire's rapid ascension and ultimate fall.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The circus no longer comes to town — and gone with it is the Ringling family fortune that helped build  "The Greatest Show on Earth."

The rise and fall of the Ringling empire follows seven brothers and one sister through the heyday of the Roaring Twenties to financial downfall during the Great Depression. 'Circus King' John Ringling — formerly ranked among the wealthiest people in the world — died with just $311 in his bank account. His estate, including a Venetian palazzo and expansive art collection, was appraised at $23.5 million.

Once one of the richest families in America, the Ringling Brothers — Albert, Augustus, Otto, Alfred, Charles, John, and Henry — started their circus as a five-cent show in rural Iowa. This soon became a traveling railroad production, and merged with Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1909. The only Ringling sister's children helped restore much of the family's wealth before they sold the company to the Feld family in 1967 for $22.8 million. After many more decades of performances, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus closed on May 21, 2017.

Read more: The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is leaving town for good after 146 years

While not all of the original founders lived long enough to enjoy the massive fortune, several — especially John and Charles — were able to spend their riches on large homes, yachts, and luxury vehicles.

As this year marked the second summer without the circus, few fragments of the deceased American past-time remain. Keep reading for a look at the family's rise to prominence, spending, and business roles.

Note: Some information is pulled from "Circus Kings: Our Ringling Family Story," a memoir by Henry Ringling North and Arlen Hatch. Ringling North was the son of Ida Ringling, the founders' only sister. The afterword, which provides context for historical happenings after the book's 1960 publication, is written by circus historian Fred Dahlinger, Jr.

The Ringling brothers' parents moved to Baraboo, Wisconsin, in 1855. The small town would later become the circus headquarters.

According to their grandson's memoir, August Rüngeling and Marie Salóme Juliar met in Milwaukee in 1852 and briefly lived in Chicago before moving to Baraboo, Wisconsin. August Rüngeling worked as a saddle and harness maker, and his family — who emigrated from Germany — changed their last name to Ringling shortly after settling in the US.

The Ringlings moved around the Midwest during the early years of their marriage. They spent time in McGregor, Iowa, where four of their seven sons were born, and eventually settled in Baraboo permanently. The Ringlings had eight children total: Albert, Augustus, Otto, Alfred, Charles, John, Henry, and Ida (listed in order of age).

Of the Ringlings' seven sons, five joined together to begin the infamous Ringling Bros. Circus.

Though they started with one- and five-cent shows, the Ringling brothers would later own a "flock of circuses" eventually combined to form the "Greatest Show on Earth"— a name adopted in 1919 after the Ringling Bros. Circus merger with the Barnum & Bailey Circus. The second-youngest brother John Ringling was instrumental in the deal, purchasing the circus from James A. Bailey's widow in 1907 (cofounder PT Barnum, who started Barnum's American Museum, had died 10 years prior).

After witnessing show animals arrive by boat one early morning in 1870, the Ringling brothers decided to form their own circus. "Alf T. Ringling states that as he and his brothers walked home for breakfast, they talked together for the first time of having a circus of their own," wrote Henry Ringling North in his memoir "Circus Kings: Our Ringling Family Story."

Alf T. Ringling wrote in 1900 that "When the last wagon had rolled slowly up the bank, Al, with a sigh of relaxation, turn to Otto and said: 'What would you say if we had a show like that?' "

The very first show charged an admission price of one cent for the children of McGregor, though the show ended up netting $8.37. The following year, the brothers put on their first "real show," which they consider to be the first official Ringling Brothers circus performance, charging five cents per ticket.

After spending a few years supporting both the family business and their own individual pursuits, the Ringling brothers joined together in 1882 to put on a show called "Ringling Bros. Classic and Comic Concert Co." The production earned just $13, while the costs to run the show totaled $25.90.

The show, which would later turn a huge profit, went by many names after that performance, including "Ringling Bros. Grand Carnival of Fun,""Ringling Bros. Great Double Shows Circus, Caravan, Trained Animal Exposition," and "Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Railroad Shows, Real Roman Hippodrome, 3 Ring Circus and Elevated Stages, Millionaire Menagerie, Museum and Aquarium and Spectacular Tournament Production of Caesar's Triumphal Entry into Rome."

These ventures eventually grew to what was known as 'The Greatest Show on Earth' — and included a considerable fortune

In his memoir, the Ringling brothers' nephew Henry Ringling North wrote, "My uncles, the seven Ringling brothers, had also gone a long way from poverty-stricken country boys who had dreamed of owning a great circus and made their dream come true doubled in spades."

While not all of his uncles lived long enough to enjoy the massive fortune, several — especially John and Charles — were able to spend their riches on large homes, yachts, and luxury vehicles.

During its heyday in the Roaring '20s,  Ringling Bros. Circus netted millions of dollars and was considered one of the most impressive live shows. The circus was made especially profitable after the brothers began using railroads to travel to both small towns and big cities by train.

For a significant chunk of of its 150-year collective lifetime, the show was headquartered in Baraboo, Wisconsin, which became known as 'Circus City.'

According to Henry Ringling North's description, the small town housed both performers and animals during the winter months. Known as "Winter Quarters," the area included stables, bunks, and wagon and blacksmith shops. According to the Ringling nephew's account, the usually-quiet Midwestern city was home to up to fifty elephants and other wild animals during its coldest season.

Along with the buildings for their circus crew, the brothers also owned a hotel and other properties. Since the 1950s, the remnants of Winter Quarters make up Circus World Museum. As a result of these historic buildings, along with several of the family's original houses, Baraboo is one of the locations most associated with the seven Ringling brothers.

Al Ringling especially loved Baraboo, and was the only brother who maintained a permanent residence in the small Wisconsin town.

While the brothers always returned home for holidays and other family business, Albert Ringling (otherwise known as "Al" or "Uncle Al") was especially fond of Baraboo and made it his permanent home.

After Al Ringling died in 1916, his sister and his nephews moved into his mansion. One of his nephews, Henry Ringling North, describes living in his uncle's "great, turreted, Renaissance-style mansion, half castle and half chateau, built of Lake Superior sandstone." In his memoir "Circus Kings," Ringling North details the chateau: a dark-paneled library, a massive ballroom, a wine cellar, stables, and ceilings covered in gold leaf.

According to Ringling North's memoir, his "Uncle Al" served as equestrian director of Ringling show and was known by his nickname to the public as well as his family. In addition to his role as an equestrian director, he was also skilled at tightrope walking and always practiced "juggling and aerobatics." His greatest achievement as equestrian director was a show that included 61 horses in 1899.

In addition to his estate, Al Ringling built a theater for his hometown.

Two years before he died, Al built a $10,000 theater for the city of Baraboo. The Al Ringling Theatre still stands today and is marked as a historical spot. According to his nephew's memoir, the building — recently restored in 2016— was built as "an almost perfect copy" of Marie Antoinette's theater at Versailles.

The family's second oldest and youngest siblings, August Ringling and Henry Ringling respectively, were the last to join the original five founders in the family business.

According to "Circus Kings," the Ringling brothers made Augustus "Gus" Ringling the advertising manager of the circus in 1891. One of the last to join the family business, Gus previously worked as a carriage trimmer. Gus died in 1907 and by this time "the others were living in considerable splendor, each according to his taste," according to Henry Ringling North's memoir. The second-eldest Ringling brother had three daughters: Mattie, Lorene, and Alice.

Meanwhile the second-youngest sibling, Henry Ringling, originally began helping his brothers by working the door at the circus shows. His nephew Henry Ringling North wrote, "Until 1931, Ringling Brothers was not a corporation, but a simple partnership. As one by one the partner-brothers died, the survivors made a settlement with heirs and carried on." Henry took over some of his brother Otto Ringling's responsibilities when he died, and had one son named Henry who never joined the circus industry.

Otto Ringling was known as 'The King' for his financial power when he was alive.

According to his nephew's memoir, Otto Ringling became known as "The King" for his power with financial matters. According to the account, he gave the final approval for John Ringling's idea to purchase the Barnum & Bailey Circus for $410,000. After the purchase, the Ringlings commanded their own train and the Barnum & Bailey train until they finally merged the two shows in 1919, after Otto's death. While he was alive, Otto used his fortune to build a library of "fine books."

In his New York Times obituary, his brothers additionally labeled "The King" as both "the financier of the family" as well "the Lieutenant General."In his will, which he had presented to his brother John, he distributed his hundreds of thousands of dollars to his nieces and nephews (much of it in trusts). John later took over much of Otto's financial duties, while his brothers maintained their separate responsibilities.

Alfred Ringling served as the head of public relations, and settled in what is now Oak Ridge, New Jersey.

Henry Ringling North wrote that Alfred Ringling — otherwise known as "Alf T."— headed public relations and was pivotal when the growing performance company competed with other area shows in the late 1890s. Like their father before them, Alfred and his brother Charles worked in the harness making industry before the circus became a national success.

While his brother Al invested in the brothers' hometown of Baraboo, Alf T. invested in the Petersburg area of New Jersey, which is now known as Oak Ridge.

"Ringling purchased 600 acres and began to build his estate in 1913,"reported the New Jersey Herald. "Along with the 28-room mansion, Ringling constructed outbuildings to house his menagerie of horses, elephants, birds and other animals. Two massive dams were erected to change Petersburg Pond into what is now Lake Swannanoa."

The 28-room home was completed in 1916 and now sits on just 4.2 acres of land. The home was listed for $800,000 last year. Completed in 1916, it is estimated to have cost $300,000, equivalent to $6.9 million today. Alf T. died in the manor in 1919 — just three years after its completion.

The property was also briefly used as the winter quarters for his son Richard's circus, the R.T. Richards Circus. Richard ended his involvement with the circus after barely two years, and moved to Montana to work as a rancher. According to historian Fred Dahlinger Jr.'s 2008 afterword in Henry Ringling North's memoir, Richard's son Paul continued operating the ranch in Montana. However, both Ringling men maintained connections with the family business while they were alive. Paul Ringling died in 2018. The land, purchased by John Ringling, is still known as Ringling, Montana, today.

Alf T.'s granddaughter, Mabel Ringling, worked in the equestrian industry.

After the death of their brothers, Charles and John Ringling remained the two key players in the family business. Charles settled in Sarasota, Florida, as did John.

Known as "Mr. Charles," Charles Ringling commanded the circus train and took on duties similar to that of a general manager, keeping a "Book of Wonders" to record the circus going-ons during his time traveling the rails.

In his memoir, Henry Ringling North wrote, "Uncle Charles had a splendid car called the Caledonia, furnished in magnificent red plus and gold, with real lace curtains." He also noted that his uncle — who maintained a love of music — collected rare violins.

In addition to his massive homes in Wisconsin and Florida, Charles purchased the Gillespie golf course and developed the business sector of Sarasota, along with constructing the Sarasota Terrace Hotel. Nearby, Ringling Boulevard is named after him, as well as other buildings.

Charles' wife Edith would later play a major role as she fought for management control after Charles' death.

After her husband's death, Edith and her children each received a third of Charles' shares. In 1943, Edith used this majority to nominate her son to the role of president and director, which had been given by default to his cousin, John Ringling North II.

Edith and Aubrey Ringling — Edith and Charles' niece by marriage — collectively held 63% of Ringling shares in the early 1940s. They used this controlling power to nominate Robert Ringling as vice president of the circus.

The couple had two children — Robert and Hester. Robert briefly served as president of the Ringling circus organization for three years.

Robert briefly served as president of the Ringling Bros. Circus from 1943 to 1947, during which the Hartford Circus Fire tragedy occurred. Robert's brief internment caused a bit of family tension: The new president was advertised as the return of a Ringling heir, as Robert was the only one of the original founding brothers' sons to assume the role.

"A Ringling son has taken his rightful place in the circus sun," the circus program read, according to Henry Ringling North's memoir. "The mantle of the Ringling Brothers, the famous founders of the Ringling Circus, has been draped on the broad shoulders of Robert Ringling, son of the late Charles Ringling, one of the most brilliant showmen that ever lived."

Robert's sister Hester continued to live on the massive property her father built in Sarasota, Florida in one of the estate's houses with her husband and children. Her home is now known as South Hall, a part of the New College of Florida's campus.

Charles Ringling's estate, which Edith, Hester, and Robert occupied until their deaths, is now known as South Hall.

The estate was, and still is, known for its pink marble and expansive rooms. A walkway now connects the main house to the additional homes, where Hester and her family lived until her death.

The home is considered Charles Ringling's best displays of wealth and cost $10 million to build in the 1920s, according to his nephew's memoir. Additional luxuries of Charles included a fleet of 120 carriages, a yacht called Symphonia, and many acres of Florida property.

Charles' brother John built the neighboring Ca' d'Zan mansion. The house name is Venetian for 'House of John.'

Always wanting to leave his hometown of Baraboo, John first lived in a hotel in Chicago. His nephew said, "The only one who did not live part of the time in Baraboo was Uncle John, who became the most famous of them all."

At the time of its completion, the massive 56-room Venetian style palazzo included many amenities described by Henry Ringling North: a barroom with glass panels from St. Louis' famous Cicardi Winter Palace Restaurant, a master "ballroom-sized bedroom,"and a bathtub cut from Siena marble. In his memoir, Ringling North also noted that John Ringling was able to keep an impressive supply of expensive alcohol during the prohibition years.

"With its furnishing, not including the tapestries and works of art, Ca' d'Zan cost Uncle John $1,650,000," reported Ringling North.

A New York Times feature by Geraldine Fabrikan described the extraordinary work that went into restoring the palace and the works of art during the early 2000s, spearheaded by curator Ron McCarty. Relics were collected from family members and donors, including "a black crepe beaded gown with sequins from French & Company that cost $1,800 in 1923" once belonging to Mabel Ringling. The Times reported that in addition to tracking down items, many of the closets and bureaus in the mansion had remained locked — and full of valuable objects — for years as the estate fell into disrepair.

"We got a locksmith to open the bureau, and we found all John Ringling's Charvet ties lying in rows,"curator Ron McCarty told The Times.

The home and art exhibits — which were gifted to the state of Florida at the time of John Ringling's death — are now open to the public. John, his wife Mabel, and his sister Ida are all buried in the estate garden.

Ca' d'Zan also included a separate art museum to house John's ever-growing collection.

When John Ringling began visiting Europe to scout for new talent for his shows, he also began collecting paintings. His nephew noted that one of his favorite pastimes was looking for new additions at Christie's in London.

"But the fact remains that his do-it-yourself art education enabled him to amass a collection of old masters — he never bought modern pictures — which at the time of his death was appraised at close to $15,000,000, about five times what he paid for it," wrote Henry Ringling North. "His collection put the John and Mable Ringling Museum in the first rank among the galleries in the world."

Collection pieces noted by his nephew's memoir included a Tintoretto painting — purchased for $200 but appraised at $50,000 — and a Rubens painting of the Duke of Westminster for $150,000. A similar painting later sold at an auction for over five times that amount. Many of these paintings remained in storage for years. Part of Ron McCarty's mansion project included restoring these paintings, along with the elaborate ceiling murals, for display.

Arguably the most famous Ringling Brother — and credited with the merger of Barnum & Bailey — John Ringling had many business ventures and spent much of his life mingling with wealthy investors.

Despite being hailed as an impressive businessman, John Ringling never finished high school. John started out with creating routes for the circus train, later working to bring in new acts for the show, often from Europe. His most famous business move, perhaps, is buying Barnum & Bailey for $410,000. John was later instrumental in moving the combined show from Bridgeport to Sarasota, where he purchased property for a new headquarters.

In his book "Circus Kings," John Ringling's grandson wrote about the famous business move: "Having achieved one ambition by masterminding Ringling Brothers' purchase of Barnum & Bailey, he was just starting to build the great financial empire which made him, for a time, one of the richest men in the world."

During these years, John Ringling also remained involved in his real estate company, the oil industry, and the purchase of railways.

His most notable ventures, however, stayed with the circus. In addition to his life-changing purchase of Barnum & Bailey, John Ringling bought the American Circus Corporation outright for $1.7 million.

Though John amassed a considerable fortune, he died with just $311 in the bank.

After Otto died, John became the new family financier, and after Charles died, John remained the only living Ringling brother for over a decade.

Like his other brothers who lived long enough to enjoy the family wealth, he later indulged in other luxuries besides his paintings. According to his nephew's accounts, John had an affinity for luxury vehicles: "He never owned anything but Rolls-Royces and Pierce-Arrows."

Additionally, John Ringling purchased custom-made suits from Saville Row and Mr. Bell of New York. Prior to Ca' d'Zan, Ringling also lived on Dearborn Avenue in Chicago and Fifth Avenue in New York, along with purchasing a manor in Alpine, New Jersey.

Despite many years of luxury, John Ringling experienced financial troubles during the last years of his life due to the burden of the Great Depression. (His nephews, however, would later rebuild some of the family's wealth.)

An entry in his nephew's memoir reads: "On December 2, 1936, John Ringling died. He had $311 in the bank. His estate was officially appraised at $23,500,000."

Of the eight Ringling children, the youngest sibling was Ida, born in Baraboo but significantly younger than her oldest brother.

According to her son's memoir, Ida Ringling married Henry Whitestone North, a railroad engineer. She spent time living in her brother Al's Baraboo chateau after his death, and later moved into the Bird Key island's "New Edzell Castle" where she lived until her death in 1950. Also known as the Worcester Home, Ida's brother John originally intended for the property to be used as President Warren G. Harding's "winter White House."

Ida Ringling North had three children: John, Henry, and Salóme.

Her two sons, John and Henry, would succeed her brothers as circus kings.

The two brothers are largely credited with modernizing the circus, and — more importantly — bringing it back to firm financial standing after the Great Depression. One of their earliest purchases, which revitalized the show's acts, was "Gargantua the Gorilla," for which they paid $10,000.

The brothers also made two pivotal decisions later in their career: ending big-top tent performances in favor of arena shows and ultimately selling the circus to the Feld family in 1967.

John Ringling North served as president and director for the majority of his life, following his uncle's lead.

Described by his brother as inheriting the "Ringling touch," John Ringling North, like his uncle and namesake before him, began working to bring new acts to the show following the Great Depression. He brought notable people, including the Great Wallendas.

Originally working for his uncle's real estate business, Ringling later handled the circus' banking matters while also working on Wall Street.

After John and Henry helped restore much of the family's wealth, Henry reported that his brother spent $20,000 on his honeymoon.

"John Ringling North passed away in 1985, having achieved a wealth far beyond his more famous uncle," reported circus historian Fred Dahlinger, Jr. in the afterword of Henry Ringling North's memoir.

Henry Ringling North served as vice president and remained involved in the circus' railroad travel until its end in 1956.

After years working for his uncles' circus, Henry Whitestone Ringling North penned "Circus Kings: Our Ringling Family Story," which follows the circus family's history up to 1960. The published afterword provides the reader with additional information into the early 2000s, still before the Ringling Brothers ceased for good.

Henry Ringling North spent years working for his uncle John, describing much of this time period in his memoir.

"Life was very strange during the years I spent at the Ca' d'Zan with Uncle John, serving him as business agent, chauffeur, handyman, and sometimes cook," Ringling North wrote.

After the sale of the circus, Henry Ringling North, along with John Ringling North, spent time in Europe. Henry purchased their father's ancestral Galway home, and the two became Irish citizens. Henry also lived in Belgium and Switzerland, dying in Geneva in 1993.

Ringling North had one child, a son named John Ringling II after his uncle and great uncle. Ringling II was involved in the circus industry, owning the Kelly Miller Circus from 2006 to 2017.

After growing up with the circus, John Ringling II decided to take after his namesake uncle and great uncle before him, purchasing the Keller-Miller circus in 2006. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ringling North II has three children: two daughters named Katherine and Sorcha and a son named John Ringling North III.

"I knew I couldn't equal what my father, my uncle, their uncles did, but I wanted there to be a circus even in a one-ring format, the kind of circus I remember from those days," Ringling North II said in a 2012 interview. "And I said if I don't come, who's going to do it?"

Ringling North II operated the Oklahoma-based circus for just over a decade, until animals were banned from most traveling shows. This coincided with the last Ringling Bros. show, held in May of the same year.

Ringling II's involvement with the show is the family's most recent — and perhaps last — involvement in the circus industry. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus officially closed in 2017.

Prior to the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus close in 2017, the most famous date was in 1956, marking the last big-top tent performance. Following the final show in Pittsburgh, the brothers turned the production into a arena-only operation. The circus most notably performed as a resident show at Madison Square Garden in New York City, continuing a tradition started by Henry and John's uncles years before.

After over 80 years operating the circus, the Ringling family sold the show to the Feld family who had been involved in the business for some time. The deal was signed at the Colosseum in Rome. According to historian Fred Dahlinger, Jr., "North and the minority owners, all veterans of battles for control, split the $8,000,000 paid for the family legacy."

The Felds continued the show for another 50 years, first announcing in 2015 that the circus would eliminate elephant acts by 2018. This decision was quickly amended, and the 13 Ringling elephants retired a year and a half early in 2016. A few months later, the Feld family announced the circus would not continue at all.

The Felds announced that there was no "one reason" for the circus' closure — but declining sales and mounting pressures from animal rights activists were two contributing factors. The final show was held on May 21, 2017, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island.

The closing message for the collective 146-year operation, stated by the show's ringleader, announced, "We never say goodbye in the circus, my friends. All we say is, we'll see you down the road."

Private equity's biggest hires show how firms like KKR and Blackstone are placing their bets for 2020. Here are this year's 10 must-know moves.

Stephen Schwarzman

  • Private equity firms like KKR, Blackstone, and The Carlyle Group's key hires this year that show how they plan to invest in 2020.
  • Business Insider spoke with PE recruiters and dug up hire announcements to track the biggest people-moves who those working in the industry should know about.
  •  The additions illustrated investment in growth equity, impact investing and overseas offices throughout Asia.

Private equity firms typically do most of their hiring at the associate level, often preferring to cultivate talent from within rather than through external hires.

Sometimes, though, they sign on people at the senior level in areas of strategic importance.

These instances, though few and far in between, offer a peek at key shifts in PE firms' investment strategies, which can get lost in the day-to-day news shuffle.

Business Insider took a look back at the year, spoke with executive recruiters and dug up hire announcements, to see how private equity firms have been padding their rosters as we head into 2020.

Some firms like Warburg Pincus, Silver Lake and Apollo Global Management were not so active on the outside hiring front, instead announcing internal management shifts that promoted existing execs.

KKR, Blackstone and The Carlyle Group, meanwhile, made key hires in areas including growth equity, impact investing, and overseas offices throughout Asia.

Put in one place, these moves offer a cheat sheet for private equity observers to see what areas firms are prioritizing as they evolve into giant asset managers and sprout new business lines.

Here are the highlights for 2019.

Jon Korngold joins Blackstone from General Atlantic

One private equity recruiter told us that Korngold's move to Blackstone was probably the year's biggest hire.

That's because it was the first time Blackstone created an entire division devoted to growth equity investing, or the financing and acquiring of fast-growing companies.

Korngold, 45, made a splash when he co-led the first deal in the new Blackstone Growth Equity unit, buying a controlling stake in MagicLab, the company that owns dating app Bumble, for $3 billion.

Korngold joined Blackstone from General Atlantic where he was considered one of its most senior ranking members, leading its financial services and healthcare groups.

He joined Blackstone as senior managing director in January and then went on a hiring spree of his own, picking up Ram Jagannath, a former executive of The Carlyle Group, among others.

Read more: We talked to a dozen insiders about Jon Korngold, the investor driving Blackstone's big push into backing fast-growing companies like Bumble

Ram Jagannath joins Blackstone from Navab Capital Partners

One of the tragic events of the year was the unexpected death of 53-year-old Alex Navab, the former KKR executive who left the firm to launch Navab Capital Partners.

Shortly after his death in July, the team he had convened to form Navab Capital Partners, which had been seeking $3 billion for its debut fund, disbanded.

Ram Jagannath was one of the senior investment professionals on the Navab Capital Partners team whose new home was announced in August.

Jagannath had previously worked at The Carlyle Group and placed his investing focus on the healthcare and technology sectors.

Korngold scooped him up to help find and close deals of fast-growing companies, drawing investor interest in Blackstone Growth Equity.

During his 12 years at Carlyle, Jagannath was on the deal teams of investments such as One Medical Group, Pharmaceutical Product Development and Ortho Clinical Diagnostics.

He got a JD and MBA from Northwestern University in 2007.

KKR makes key Asia hires

KKR has had boots on the ground in Asia for 15 years but it is doubling down on that investment, expanding its private equity investing power into credit and infrastructure.

That was illustrated this year when KKR made some key hires in Asia.

First, in January, it brought onboard David Luboff from Macquarie Group, where he spent 18 years and was most recently the head of its Asia Infrastructure Funds.

He joined KKR's team of 28 Asia infrastructure professionals and is working out of the firm's Singapore office. He will lead the Pan Asian operations of KKR's global infrastructure business.

Then, in March, KKR tapped Kate Richdale as the head of strategy and business development in the Asia Pacific from Goldman Sachs.

At the time, KKR had been busy deploying a more than $9 billion fund targeting Asia investments overall, and saw Richdale as an asset who could assist with technology related deals.

During Richdale's tenure at Goldman Sachs, where she co-helmed the investment bank in Asia, the firm helped take public Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi Corp, among other tech companies.

Ming Lu, member and head of KKR Asia, said in a statement: "Our first phase of growth has focused on scaling our private equity business, and now we have the great opportunity to meet the growing needs of Asian businesses and entrepreneurs."

KKR hires chief information and innovation officer

Insiders say big private equity firms are still in the nascent stages of figuring out how to use data and technology to inform investment decisions.

But one hire in 2019 signaled they are marching forward with plans to channel their inner quants in the coming years.

KKR hired Emelia Sherifova from Northwestern Mutual as its first chief information and innovation officer.

Sherifova had been the chief technology officer of the large bank and said in a statement that "technology and a data driven approach will play a central role" in KKR's next stage of evolution.

The news followed a similar hire by Blackstone in 2015 when it hired Matt Katz from Point72 Asset Management to lead a team of data scientists who now serve as a resource to deal teams and help Blackstone-owned companies improve operations.

Carlyle hires Pooja Goyal to lead renewables effort

The Carlyle Group wants to invest in clean energy.

So it hired Pooja Goyal, a veteran banker at Goldman Sachs, to head up a new division focused on just that.

In July, Goyal started work in Carlyle's New York office, working alongside its broader power group, which closed its second fund on $1.5 billion in 2016.

"In every deal we do, we're going to need to bring a new level of energy management, automation and efficiency to projects," Andrew Marino, co-head of Carlyle's Global Infrastructure Fund, told Infrastructure Investor.

He explained: "Government entities are not only encouraging, but even requiring a greater standard of renewable energy in delivering their projects."

Goyal spent 17 years at Goldman Sachs, most recently serving as head of alternative energy investing, where she led the investment bank's deals in the renewables sector.

Goyal has held several board and committee positions including the boards of Vivint Solar and the American Council of Renewable Energy and the investment committee at Altus Power.

Advent hires TPG tech investor in San Francisco

In February, Advent International signed on a prominent technology investor in San Francisco with the hire of Bryan Taylor.

Taylor had previously been with TPG Capital where he was co-head of its technology group and led a team of 20 people investing in software, data analytics and technology services.

At Advent, Taylor is putting that tech expertise to work scoping out investment opportunities alongside fellow investor, Eric Wei, who recruited him.

It was a significant hire for Advent because it added heft to its technolgy investing arm. Taylor will lead a team of 14 at the shop, which has more than 200 investment professionals overall and more than $54 billion in assets under management.

Prior to working at TPG, Taylor co-founded Symphony Technology Group, a private equity firm focused on investing in software and technology services companies.

Carlyle credit exec rejoins Morgan Stanley

Jeffrey Levin, the president of Carlyle's business development company, submitted his resignation in January and rejoined Morgan Stanley.

Levin had worked at Morgan Stanley between 2004 and 2012 and was a founding partner of Morgan Stanley Credit Partners.

At Morgan Stanley he's now heading up direct lending, an area where a number of private equity firms have been expanding and competing with the large investment banks

Blackstone launches impact investing platform

More investors want to put their money into businesses that are doing good things for the world, like making people healthier and preserving the environment.

So Blackstone tapped Tanya Barnes, a managing director at Goldman Sachs, to lead a new "impact investing" strategy, or in what private equity lingo means investing in good causes that also happen to be good business.

In her new role, Barnes works under Blackstone's strategic partners group, a unit that specializes in "secondaries," or the sale of investor stakes.

The hire marks a turning point in private equity that has gained momentum over the past few years, as other firms including Bain Capital and KKR have raised funds devoted to impact investing.

Strategic partners, the unit in which impact investing sits, manages $28 billion of assets across private equity, real estate and infrastructure funds.

Carlyle brings in new face of impact investing

On a similar note, The Carlyle Group also tapped Goldman Sachs talent for its own impact investing endeavors.

Megan Starr joined Carlyle as a principal and head of impact investing over the summer.

Starr has already taken on a public-facing role, representing Carlye at multiple conferences including this year's Greenwich Economic Forum, alongside its co-founder David Rubenstein.

Prior to joining Carlyle, she worked in Goldman Sachs's ESG and impact investing division for five years. She also was named as one of Business Insider's 2018 Wall Street Rising Stars

  • Time is one of our most valuable resources — and some tasks just take up too much of it.
  • Luckily, if you're looking to save some time, there are plenty of services that you can count on to help you out with everyday tasks, from picking up groceries to waiting in a long line — for a fee.
  • Outsourcing your tasks may seem silly, but it's a worthwhile splurge. If you're considering the investment, platforms like TaskRabbit, Thumbtack, Handy, Amazon Home Services, DoorDash, and Instacart can help you out.

Don't waste my time. Time is of the essence. Time is ticking.

The narrative around time cautions us to take advantage of it while we have it. And it makes sense; time is one of our most valuable resources and we can't get it back once it's gone. Sometimes it feels like there's not enough time in a day to complete every task on your agenda, and there just might never be. If you ever find yourself in this debacle, you might want to look into outsourcing some of your simple, everyday tasks.

These days you can find services to help you with all sorts of tasks — everything from picking up your groceries to building furniture for you. It might seem silly at first — why would I pay someone to pick up my groceries if I am able to do it myself? The answer is, to save time. Business Insider spoke with two financial experts who both agreed that spending on time-saving services is worth the splurge. Outsourcing small tasks is probably the closest you can get to actually getting back some hours in your day, and therefore, it's a worthwhile investment.

From meal delivery services to on-demand handymen, here are six great services that can help you complete your everyday tasks in less time:

This list includes a Sponsored Product that has been suggested by DoorDash; it also meets our editorial criteria in terms of quality and value.*

Instacart

Get groceries delivered by Instacart here

What it is: A same-day grocery delivery service.

How much it costs: $3.99 - $14.99 per delivery (price varies by store and delivery time)

How it works: Make an account on Instacart (don't worry, it's free) and browse the grocery stores in your area. They have a pretty good selection of stores, including more local specialty stores, as well as wholesale stores like Costco. In New York, Whole Foods is one of the more popular options.

Pick a store, and then shop for your groceries as you would shop for anything else online — simply add whatever groceries you want to your cart. Instacart also shows you all the promotions and deals going on at your local grocery store, so while the delivery fee for some stores might seem expensive, it ultimately could save you money with easy-to-find deals you might not have noticed walking down the store aisles.

When you're done shopping, check out and choose a delivery window — this is when your food will be delivered right to your door. Delivery prices vary by store, but you can often snag free delivery deals. If you have other tasks to complete at home, this is a great way to save some time and get all the food you need.

Handy

Make a Handy appointment today, here

What it is: An on-demand handyman and cleaning service.

How much it costs: Price varies based on task, zip code, and service date.

How it works: Pick the service you'd like, then the date and time when you'd like it done. Handy offers a wide range of services including home cleaning, home painting, furniture assembly, and housekeeping, among others. Handy recommends the amount of time you'll need to get different tasks done (for example, a cleaner will likely need more time to fully clean a large home than a small apartment). After filling out all of the information, Handy will send you a price quote. You can then book instantly — Handy appointments can be scheduled as early as one day in advance.

From there, you can easily use the Handy app to pay, reschedule your appointment, and communicate with your Handy professional. All Handy professionals are vetted, not only to ensure they have experience in their given field, but also to make sure they have a clean background. Additionally, you can see reviews of your Handy worker on the app, including how many jobs they've completed and their rating out of five stars. If you like shopping at Wayfair, you may be familiar with Handy — the two brands have a partnership to make furniture shopping and assembly easy.

DoorDash

Order food from DoorDash here

What it is: A service that delivers food from local restaurants right to your door.

How much it costs: Price varies based on restaurant, items ordered, and location.

How it works: You're hungry, but the last thing you want to do is cook and you sure don't want to leave the house to pick up takeout either. What do you do? DoorDash. It's a food delivery service that lets you order food from your favorite restaurants and delivers it right to your front door.

Place an order through the DoorDash app or website — both are pretty seamless to use. Start by putting in your current location and DoorDash will show you its partner restaurants in the area. Sort through your available restaurants by type of cuisine, menu price range, or by which are running deals at the moment. Find a restaurant you like, pick out some menu items, and place your order. A cool feature is that DoorDash lets you schedule orders up to five days in advance, as well as make ones for immediate delivery. When you place an order for immediate delivery, DoorDash gives you an estimate for how long it should take for your food to get to your plate.

Prices on DoorDash depend on a few factors. On top of the price of the menu items, you'll have to pay a service fee — a combination of sales tax, which will differ based on location, and other fees. If your order is less than $10, you'll incur a small order fee of $2. Then there's a delivery fee, which typically costs $2.99 or more. If you're a frequent user, you can get DashPass. For $9.99 a month, it cuts out the delivery fee and lowers the service fee from a bunch of participating restaurants. With DoorDash your food will end up costing a little more than picking up takeout or cooking at home, but you save big on convenience. And after a long day, there's nothing better than satisfying your cravings with a meal from your favorite restaurant, that you can eat on your couch, in sweatpants.

TaskRabbit

Find a TaskRabbit Tasker available near you here

What it is: A service that deals with just about any task you need done.

How much it costs: Price varies based on task, zip code, and service date.

How it works: TaskRabbit was one of the first time-saving services I'd ever encountered, and it's likely because of the breadth of the services they offer. You'll find the classic handyman and home cleaning services available, but TaskRabbit can also help you with a lot of niche tasks, too. Through TaskRabbit, you can pay someone to organize your closet, do research for you, help you move, build your IKEA furniture,  bartend at your party, or even wait in a line for you. Once you choose the task you're interested in, you'll see a list of all of the qualified professionals aka "Taskers" in your area and how much they charge. TaskRabbit uses independent contractors who all set their own hourly rates — you can filter Taskers by their rates, number of positive reviews, and tasks completed to find the right person for the job.

Once you find the right Tasker for the job, schedule your appointment either online or on the app. You can usually find available appointments for the day of, or you can book further out — it really depends on the schedule of your Tasker. The day-of booking is particularly convenient in the case that you think you can do something yourself, but then realize you don't have the right tools or enough time.

Amazon Home Services

Book an Amazon home & business service here

What it is: A selection of home services offered on Amazon.

How much it costs: Price varies based on service, zip code, and other factors.

How it works: Just when you thought the list of Amazon's products and services couldn't get any bigger, you can now count on the e-commerce behemoth to help you out with housekeeping services, furniture assembly, technology installation, and home maintenance.

There are two ways to find the services and providers available in your area. You can search for services you need specifically at any time, but you can also choose to add installation to many of your Amazon orders.

When you pick the service you'd like, Amazon will give you an estimate based on your location and a few job-specific factors. Some services may not be offered in certain locations — it all depends on the pros that Amazon has available at any given time. Amazon is very transparent about exactly what the fee will get you, and provides information about how to change your appointment and what additional requests might be available as part  your service. If you already have an Amazon account, using this service will be easy.

Thumbtack

Make an appointment with a Thumbtack pro here

What it is: A service that pairs you with pros in all different fields.

How much it costs: Price varies based on service, location, desired appointment date, and other factors.

How it works: You can find professionals in all sorts of fields on Thumbtack. On the easy-to-use app (or online), search for the service you're looking for — Thumbtack offers a huge selection from event DJs to makeup artists, piano teachers to painters, and lots more. Once you've decided what you want and put in your zip code, you'll see the pros in your area. In order to get a full price estimate, you'll need to put in some more info about what you need specifically. Then, you'll get to see everyone in your area who can help you out. Each professional has a profile with ratings, reviews, and their typical pricing.

Once you've looked around, you can schedule your appointment right through the app or website. Lots of professionals have their contact information on their profile, so you can clear up any questions you may have before your appointment. The interface is very informative, making it feel comfortable to use for the first time. Thumbtack has roots in all fifty states, and not just in the big cities — you can find Thumbtack pros in small towns across the country too.

Dollar General is defying the retail apocalypse and opening 1,000 stores — here's what it's like to shop there (DG)

Dollar General

Retailers are closing thousands of stores this year as the fallout from the retail apocalypse drags on.

But there are several companies bucking that trend, and chief among them is Dollar General. Instead of shutting down stores, Dollar General is opening hundreds more locations.

The discount chain says it plans to open 1,000 stores next year, remodel 1,500 locations, and relocate 80 stores.

In the most recent quarter, the retailer's same-store sales sales grew 4.6% year-over-year, and total sales rose 8.9% to $7 billion. We went to a Dollar General store in Richmond, Virginia, last year to find out what makes it so successful.

SEE ALSO: More than 9,300 stores are closing in 2019 as the retail apocalypse drags on — here's the full list

At the entrance of the store, shoppers were greeted with a "last chance" table of discounted goods.

The store felt tiny. Most Dollar General Stores range between 7,000 and 10,000 feet, which is about half the size of a CVS store. It was lit with bright, fluorescent lights and featured narrow aisles with basic metal shelving.

To the left of the entrance, there was a large selection of snacks, drinks, and candy similar to what you might find at a gas station or convenience store.

Wine and beer were easily accessible.

This was the only refrigerated section in the store.

It featured dairy products like cheese, milk, and eggs, as well as frozen meals and pizzas. This section of the store also featured dry packaged foods like cereal and soup.

One aisle featured items that all cost $1. These products weren't necessarily discounted — they just came in smaller package sizes than what shoppers would find at Walmart or Kroger.

For example, this box contained just five trash bags, compared to the boxes of 24 or more bags that Walmart carries. I compared Dollar General's prices on these trash bags and six other items to Walmart's prices for the same products, and I found minimal differences. Dollar General was nearly 3% more expensive overall on a basket that cost $35.75.

I was surprised to find clothing, lingerie, and shoes in the store.

There were also toys, gardening equipment, kitchen tools and small appliances, home decorations, and craft supplies.

No shelf space went unused. It seemed that Dollar General had managed to squeeze everything you would find at a Walmart store into one-tenth of the space.

This helps keep costs low by ensuring that the stores are cheap to build and require very little labor. Dollar General typically staffs only two to four employees at a time to work the registers and keep the shelves stocked.

But the close quarters meant the aisles were a mess when employees were restocking shelves.

Some of the merchandise was also in disarray.

One aisle devoted to vitamins and over-the-counter medications was completely blocked by an empty box.

Some boxes were deliberately placed in the aisles to bring attention to special deals.

There were also branded displays around the store, like this station of Starbucks drinks.

Shoppers didn't seem to mind the cramped space. The smaller store size means they can get in and out of the store quickly with whatever they need.

The register was empty when I tried to check out. I waited five minutes and eventually left to find an employee who could help me.

Dollar General's strategy to keep prices low by driving down labor and infrastructure costs is readily apparent in the stores. But the breadth of products in such a conveniently sized store is unparalleled, making it clear why Dollar General is growing when most other retailers are shrinking.

The best American Express cards, no matter what kinds of rewards you want to earn

american express 6

Here are the best Amex cards in 2019:

No matter your lifestyle and your priorities, American Express has a credit or charge card to match. Amex is most famous for its travel connections and premium "experiential" offerings like concierge service, but it also offers credit cards with other perks and lower annual fees.

Whether you want a cash-back card or one that earns frequent flyer miles or hotel points, Amex has you covered. Its cards also offer various benefits like travel insurance and purchase protection.

If you're looking for the best Amex card for you, here are the ones you should consider.

SEE ALSO: All our credit card reviews — from cash-back to travel rewards to business cards — in one place

The best Amex card overall

Why you'll love it: The Platinum card offers incredibly valuable benefits and rewards, and is a must-have for any frequent traveler.

Welcome offer: 60,000 points (after you spend $5,000 in the first three months)

Annual fee: $550

Pros: Valuable perks, useful benefits, possible to get outsized value

Cons: High annual fee — even though you can make it back, and more, you'll still have to float that at first

At $550, the Platinum Card has one of the highest annual fees of any mainstream card. However, as long as you're willing to float it up front, you can get way more value back from the card — for instance, it's possible to get more than $2,000 in value from it during your first year.

The card offers 5 points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline, as well as flights and pre-paid hotels booked through Amex Travel. It earns 1x point on everything else. It also offers up to $200 in Uber credits each cardmember year, as well as up to $200 in airline credits each calendar year — if you open the card mid-year, it's possible to earn that twice in your first cardmember year.

The card comes with a number of perks, including access to more than 1,200 airport lounges within the Priority Pass network, as well as Delta Sky Clubs (when you're flying Delta) and proprietary American Express Centurion Lounges. It also offers complimentary Gold elite status with Marriott and Hilton hotels, as well as up to $100 per year in shopping credits at Saks Fifth Avenue, access to special events, and other perks at hotels.

The annual fee may turn a lot of people off from this card, but if you can get past that, the return it offers is tough to beat.

The best Amex card for dining rewards

Why you'll love it: The Amex Gold card has a lower annual fee than the Platinum Card, but it offers stellar rewards on dining and groceries and solid benefits.

Welcome offer: 35,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $4,000 in the first three months.

Annual fee: $250

Pros: Stellar rewards on dining and groceries, useful benefits, lower annual fee than the Platinum card

Cons: High annual fee compared to some other cards

American Express recently launched a massive reboot of its Premier Rewards Gold card, or "PRG," rebranding it as the American Express Gold Card, releasing a new metal design, and totally overhauling the rewards and benefits on the card.

Right now, this is one of best cards available for dining, unless you're only interested in cash back, rather than potentially more valuable rewards points, and unless you find yourself abroad at restaurants often.

The Gold Card earns 4x points at restaurants worldwide and on up to $25,000 per year at US supermarkets (and 1x point after that), 3x points on flights booked directly with the airline, and 1x point on everything else. Based on the fact that you can easily redeem Membership Rewards points for more than 1 cent of value each, that makes this the highest-earning card for everything food-related.

The Gold Card offers up to a $100 airline fee credit each calendar year, and adds up to $120 of dining credits — split into $10 each month — at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth's Steak House, or participating Shake Shack locations.

New card members — those who haven't previously had the Premier Rewards Gold — can earn a welcome bonus of 35,000 points when they spend $4,000 in the first three months.

While it's difficult to assign an exact value to Membership Rewards points, The Points Guy subjectively estimates each point as worth 2 cents. That makes the welcome bonus worth $700. Even without factoring in the annual credit benefits, that's more than enough to make up for the card's $250 annual fee.

Check out our full review of the Amex Gold card for more details.

The best cash-back Amex card

Why you'll love it: The Blue Cash Preferred earns cash back quickly, with several bonus categories.

Welcome offer: $250 statement credit (after you spend $1,000 in the first three months)

Annual fee: $95

Pros: Bonus cash back on useful categories, easy to earn enough cash back to offset the annual fee, introductory APR

Cons: High annual fee for a cash-back card

If you're less excited about earning Membership Rewards points— which can be valuable, but also require some effort to redeem for maximum value — and want to stick with cash back, the Blue Cash Preferred is the best option, despite its $95 annual fee.

Amex recently announced a refresh to the card. New and existing cardholders can now earn 6% cash back on select US streaming services and 3% back on all transit. That's in addition to the existing categories of 6% cash back at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases per year (and 1% after that), 3% back at US gas stations, and 1% cash back on everything else.

Like the EveryDay cards, the Blue Cash Preferred offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months, before switching to a variable 14.49–25.49% APR.

The Blue Cash Preferred comes with a handful of travel and purchase protections as well. Cash back comes in the form of a statement credit, so effectively you can use it to "erase" purchases.

The best Amex card for travel with a moderate annual fee

Why you'll love it: The Amex Green card earns bonus points on travel and dining — two very popular spending categories — and offers up to $200 in annual statement credits.

Welcome offer: 30,000 points (after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the first three months). Plus, if you apply by January 15, 2020, get up to $100 in statement credits toward any eligible purchase made with Away luggage in the first three months.

Annual fee: $150

Pros: Great rewards for travel and dining, generous annual statement credits considering the annual fee

Cons: Annual fee recently increased, annual statement credit for CLEAR doesn't cover the full cost of membership

The Amex Green card recently got a complete makeover, which saw it go from a card with very limited bonus categories to a top option for earning Membership Rewards points on travel and dining.

Now, you'll earn 3 points per dollar on all eligible travel, which includes everything from subway fare to hotels to flights. You'll also earn 3 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide. In terms of points-earning, this puts the Amex Green card on par with the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which also offers 3x points in these spending categories.

Other new benefits include up to $100 in statement credits toward CLEAR membership each year, and up to $100 in statement credits per year toward LoungeBuddy purchases (for airport lounge access).

The Amex Green card now has a $150 annual fee, but that's still relatively moderate, especially if you factor in those two annual statement credits (and three — if you apply by January 15, 2020, to get up to $100 toward an eligible Away luggage purchase).

Click here to learn more about the Amex Green card.

The best premium Amex business card

Why you'll love it: The Business Platinum Amex has all the high-end benefits of the personal Amex Platinum, but with perks tailored to small-business owners.

Welcome offer: 50,000 Amex points after you spend $10,000 and an extra 25,000 points after you spend an additional $10,000 all on qualifying purchases in the first three months

Annual fee: $595

Pros: Annual statement credits that can offset the annual fee, airport lounge access

Cons: High annual fee, lackluster bonus rewards

The Business Platinum is Amex's top-of-the-line business credit card, and it has many of the same perks you'll find on the personal Amex Platinum, including up to a $200 airline fee credit each year, access to airport lounges including Centurion Lounges and Priority Pass lounges, and up to a $100 credit to cover the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

It also offers several benefits that cater to business owners, such as a 50% points bonus on purchases of $5,000 or more (up to 1 million additional points each year) and up to $200 in annual statement credits for Dell purchases.

If you use Amex points to book travel, you'll appreciate the 35% Pay With Points rebate, which applies to business- and first-class flights or flights in any class with a selected qualifying airline booked through amextravel.com.

The personal Amex Platinum has the advantage when it comes to bonus categories — it earns 5x points on flights booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel, while the Business Platinum only earns 5x points on flights and prepaid hotels booked with Amex Travel. For more info on the differences between the Business Platinum and the personal Amex Platinum, read our in-depth comparison.

The best Amex business card for everyday spending

Why you'll love it: The Blue Business Plus is one of the best Amex cards for everyday spending, with no annual fee to boot.

Welcome bonus: None

Annual fee: None

Pros: High return on non-bonus spending, no annual fee

Cons: No welcome bonus, it's a business credit card so not everyone will qualify

The Blue Business Plus card earns 2x Amex points on the first $50,000 you spend each year, then 1x points. Up until that $50,000 threshold, you're effectively earning a 4% return on all your purchases, based on The Points Guy's valuations.

Another bonus is that the Blue Business Plus card has no annual fee. Just remember that it is a business product, so if you don't have a side gig or a small enterprise that would qualify you for a business card, you won't be eligible.

One downside is that there's no welcome bonus, but the return on spending could be reason enough to consider this card.

Click here to learn more about the Blue Business Plus card.

The best Amex card for families

Why you'll love it: The EveryDay Preferred earns bonus points at US grocery stores and gas stations, making it a strong product for families and others who spend a lot in these categories.

Welcome offer: 15,000 points (after you spend $1,000 in the first three months)

Annual fee: $95

Pros: Low annual fee, strong rewards structure, earns valuable points, 50% bonus when you make at least 30 transactions in a billing period

Cons: Relatively low welcome offer

The EveryDay Preferred is a strong option for anyone looking for a Membership Rewards card, but who's not interested in a premium card like the Platinum or the Amex Gold. It also has a strong points-earning scheme and a lower annual fee of $95.

The card earns 3 points per dollar spent at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 each year — 1 point per dollar after that), 2x points at US gas stations, and 1x point on everything else. You can also get 2x points on reservations made through Amex Travel.

Best of all, if you make 30 or more purchases in a billing period, you'll earn a 50% bonus. That means that those little $3 and $4 charges for things like coffee or a snack can help you get a ton of points quickly.

The card also offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months, before switching to a variable 14.49–24.49% APR. If you have a big purchase coming up and want some time to pay it off, but don't want to pay interest fees, this is a great option.

The best no-annual-fee Amex card

Why you'll love it: The Amex EveryDay has no annual fee, but still earns valuable bonus points.

Welcome offer: 10,000 points (after spending $1,000 in the first three months)

Annual fee: None

Pros: No annual fee, bonus points available

Cons: Earns points slower than most cards with annual fees

The Amex EveryDay is a no-annual-fee version, which still offers solid rewards. It earns 2x points at US supermarkets (again up to $6,000 of purchases per year, then 1x after that) and at AmexTravel.com, and 1x on everything else. It also offers 20% more points when you make 20 or more purchases in a billing period.

Like most Amex cards, it features a few travel and purchase protections, as well as access to the Amex Offers program.

While most people will be better off with the Preferred, the regular EveryDay is still a strong option — especially since there's no annual fee.

The best Amex card with a 0% intro APR

Why you'll love it: With cash back, no annual fee, and an introductory APR, the Blue Cash Everyday is the best option for paying off a big purchase over time.

Welcome offer: $150 statement credit (after spending $1,000 in the first three months)

Annual fee: None

Pros: No annual fee, introductory APR, solid cash-back earning rates

Cons: Lower cash-back earning rate than annual fee cards

The Blue Cash Everyday is similar to the Blue Cash Preferred, with a different earning structure and no annual fee.

The card earns a lower 3% cash back at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 each year — and 1% after that — 2% back at US gas stations and select department stores, and 1% cash back on everything else. While many people spend enough in the bonus categories to make the Blue Cash Preferred the better option, this remains a decent card for anyone who's strictly opposed to paying an annual fee.

If you're looking to make a major purchase and pay it off over time, like an appliance or an engagement ring, you can take advantage of the 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months (after that, it reverts to a variable 14.49–25.49% APR). You'll earn cash back on the purchase, which you can put right towards paying it off.
