The 10 most dangerous roads in America

$

Highway 1

Although the consistent, unchanging open road can be relaxing, some roads require a bit more concentration.

While there are terrifying yet thrilling roads all over the world, there are plenty of roads that offer adventure right in the US.

From Alaska's Dalton Highway to Florida's Highway 1, these are the most dangerous roads in the US.

The Dalton Highway in Alaska

Alaska's nightmarish Dalton Highway stretches some 400 miles through remote forests, tundras, and over the Yukon River.

What makes this drive extra scary is its 240-mile stretch with no gas stations, restaurants, hotels, or any other basic services. The road also contains multiple signs warning of steep grades and avalanches.

I-15 in Nevada

A 181-mile stretch of Interstate 15 between Las Vegas and Los Angeles was ranked as the most deadly stretch of road in the US in 2010. The study revealed that in 15 years alone, 1,069 people had perished on the road.

The Million Dollar Highway in Colorado

This stretch of US Route 550 traverses three 10,000-foot mountains passes, and winds across steep cliffs and hairpin curves, all without guardrails.

Local folklore says Colorado's Million Dollar Highway got its name because an early traveler said you'd have to pay her one million dollars to drive it again.

NFL POWER RANKINGS: Where all 32 teams stand going into Week 1

$
0
0

Tom Brady Gronk Patriots

After a long offseason, football is finally back.

It was an eventful offseason, with big trades involving draft picks, players coming out of retirement, and some stars choosing not to "stick to sports."

Whether your team is getting ready for another year as odds-on favorites or busy rebuilding toward the future, right now, every team is 0-0 and anything is possible over the next 17 weeks.

Now that we know who's starting (mostly), sitting, and ready to break out for a big year, here's a look at where all 32 teams stand entering Week 1 of the NFL season.

32. New York Jets

Last season: 5-11, fourth in AFC East

Week 1 opponent: at Buffalo Bills

One thing to know: The Jets appear to have taken on the ambitious goal of executing the most obvious tank the league has ever seen. Josh McCown will be starting under center and once-touted draft pick Christian Hackenberg has been relegated to third on the depth chart, bringing even more doubt into his NFL future. Godspeed to any Bilal Powell fantasy owners out there.

31. San Francisco 49ers

Last season: 2-14, fourth in NFC West

Week 1 opponent: vs. Carolina Panthers

One thing to know: The 49ers opted to keep just one quarterback behind Brian Hoyer — rookie C.J. Beathard. If Hoyer struggles, it will be interesting to see if the 49ers go looking for more experienced backups.

30. Chicago Bears

Last season: 3-13, fourth in NFC North

Week 1 opponent: vs. Atlanta Falcons

One thing to know: Despite trading up to draft Mitch Trubisky back in April, the Bears are riding with Mike Glennon as their starting quarterback to begin the season. There's no guarantee as to how long he'll hold on to the job, but it's safe to assume Bears fans might get a bit impatient if his play isn't up to snuff to start the year.

The 9 best countries in the world for expats

Brexit protest

LONDON – Political instability caused by Brexit and the election of Donald Trump in the USA have seen both America and UK plummet down this year's ranking of the top countries for expats, according to InterNations' Expat Insider survey.

Of the 65 countries surveyed, the UK ranks 54th this year while the USA is 43rd, both substantially lower scores than last year.

The top ten destinations include Bahrain, Costa Rica and Mexico, while the bottom ten — which the UK narrowly avoids — include Italy, Saudi Arabia and Greece.

Predictably, Brits who move abroad tend to be looking for sun and an affordable cost of living, and Spain is this year's top destination for British expats.

The survey, carried out between February and March this year, asked nearly 13,000 expats about their quality of life and to rank 43 different aspects of life abroad.

Keep scrolling for this year's top nine countries for expats:

9. Singapore

Singapore ranks third for Safety and Security and first for Travel and Transport, contributing to it ranking fourth overall for Quality of Life.

However, the country was 43rd for Personal Happiness, 42nd for Finding Friends and 40th for the friendliness of locals — respondents reported most of their friends were other expats.

8. Colombia

Colombia scores fifth for Personal Happiness, although is much further down the list, at 50th, for Safety and Security.

Nevertheless, the country has jumped to 43rd to 25th place for Quality of Life, and respondents reported friendly locals and that it was easy to settle in.

Colombia was also ranked third for the cost of living, an important motivating factor for many who relocated there.

7. Malta

Malta scores fifth for Working Abroad, although is a lot further down the list, in 45th place, for Travel and Transport. However, the country dropped from 6th to 19th place for Quality of Life, in part due to more negative ratings for leisure options and safety and security.

Although Malta was fifth for political stability and peacefulness last year, it doesn't even make the top 20 this year.

However, respondents highly rated the ease of finding friends and said they felt welcome, and the country scores highly for job security.

Kombucha, climbing walls, free plane tickets for parents, and hard work — A day in the life of a Silicon Valley intern (MSFT)

52LinkedIn_Intern.JPGThe tech industry is famous for having some of the best internships around. From free food, to impressive monthly stipends, Silicon Valley is the place to be for college students hoping to get an engineering job after graduation.

While everyone knows about the perks of corporate tech, we wanted to find out for ourselves what it's really like to intern in Silicon Valley. So last month we visited the Sunnyvale, California, campus of LinkedIn — the employment-focused social network that Microsoft acquired last year.

LinkedIn hires about 300 interns each summer and spreads them out among its offices in Sunnyvale, San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Singapore, and Bangalore. Those interns have a great shot at a full-time job at the company. About 69% of last year's intern crop eventually were hired by LinkedIn.

Our tour guide for the day was Ana Carolina Mexia Ponce, an interface engineering intern who will be a senior this fall at Stanford. She showed Business Insider what it's like to intern at one of Silicon Valley's big companies.

Here's what we saw.

For most people at LinkedIn, the day starts at 9 a.m.. The company's main campus is in Sunnyvale, California, about an hour south of San Francisco.

LinkedIn's Sunnyvale campus has 15 different buildings, and it's about a 15-minute walk from one end of the campus to the other.

Some employees take Caltrain, the commuter train that runs between San Francisco and San Jose, to get to the campus. Many others drive. A lot of employees have electric vehicles.

A judge blocked Dallas from removing a statue of Robert E. Lee — Here are 11 Confederate figures whose monuments are sparking controversy across the US

Robert E. Lee Statue Charlottesville

A federal judge blocked the City of Dallas' efforts to remove a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee Wednesday.

The violent white nationalist rally at Charlottesville in August has shone a light on the controversy surrounding Confederate monuments on public grounds.

• There were 1,503 Confederate symbols displayed in public spaces in the US as of 2016, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

A federal judge blocked the City of Dallas from removing a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from a public park, according to the New York Times.

Dallas is yet another locale that has sought to relocate Confederate statues from public spaces to museums.

In the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia last month, municipalities around the US are quietly and quickly working to remove the monuments, which have become a lightning rod for controversy. In August, three people died after a mob of white nationalists, neo-Nazis, and members of the so-called alt-right descended on the college town for a protest.

At the center of the storm was a statue — an equestrian monument of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The City Council of Charlottesville is attempting to remove the statue from the park.

US President Donald Trump blasted the decision to remove monuments commemorating figures like Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson in a fiery press conference Tuesday, Sonam Sheth reported for Business Insider

"I wonder: Is it George Washington next week, and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after?" Trump said. "You know, you really do have to ask yourself — where does it stop?"

In 2016, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that there are 1,503 Confederate symbols displayed in public spaces throughout the country. The US is dotted with parks, military forts, fountains, and roads bearing the names of men who chose to secede from the Union and form the Confederate States of America.

Looking through SPLC's list, it's clear that most of the statues, monuments, and busts are dedicated to general groups of Confederate soldiers, veterans, or dead.

But some historical individuals, like Lee, make several appearances on the list. Some of the figures commemorated are more controversial than others, but all served the Confederacy in some capacity.

Business Insider took note of Confederate figures who are commemorated with more than one statue, monument, memorial, or bust on public land, according to the SPLC. Some of the statues on the SPLC's list may have already been removed by this time.

Here are the backgrounds of the men whose statues are now at the heart of a nationwide controversy:

DON'T MISS: How one of the worst US presidents in history alienated Congress to the point that he was impeached

Jefferson Davis: 10 statues, busts, and monuments on public land

Before the Civil War, Davis served in Congress and worked as President Franklin Pierce's War Secretary. He resigned in 1861 and became president of the Confederate States the following year.

Despite initially being popular in the South, Confederate losses and Davis' government's ineffectiveness quickly eroded public good will, according to the Civil War Trust. By the time Davis was captured by the Union, his popularity in the South was virtually nonexistent.

However, the Lost Cause ideology ultimately adopted Davis as a central figure. This post-war ideology served to erase slavery and celebrate the Confederate cause as heroic.

Years after the war, Davis published a book — "The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government"— defending the Confederacy. The book endeared him to Confederate proponents and improved his image.

Robert E. Lee: 9 statues, busts, and monuments on public land

Lee, the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, is at the center of the recent violence in Charlottesville.

However, the man himself was opposed to Confederate monuments.

ABC reports that, after the war, Lee himself "resisted efforts to build Confederate monuments in his honor and instead wanted the nation to move on from the Civil War."

Despite losing the war, Lee became an icon in the North and South alike, thanks to the Lost Cause ideology.

As a result, Lee has been venerated since the Civil War. His decision to support a slave state has been minimized. Despite some major military blunders, he is remembered as a military genius.

Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson: 6 statues, busts, and monuments on public land

For adherents to the Lost Cause, "Stonewall" Jackson is an important figure, representing the bravery and nobility of the Southern cause.

Jackson remains one of the most famous Confederate generals to this day. He was one of the South's best tactical commanders and became a "military celebrity" in his own time, according to the Civil War Trust. His death, due to a pneumonia contracted after being injured by friendly fire, hurt Confederate morale.

The best smart home hubs you can buy

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

hub 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • The smart home hub is a great way to pull all of your smart home devices together. The hub with the best intersection of connectivity, coupled with a good app and relatively low price tag is the Samsung SmartThings hub.

The smart home is becoming increasingly popular, and it seems like every day there are more products that can be connected to your Wi-Fi network, giving you control over your home. But how do you pull all those devices together into an easy-to-use, frustration-free interface? Through a smart home hub, of course! With smart home hubs, you can set up home automation, so that your devices react based on your routine.

There are quite a few hubs out there, and they’re not all created equal. In fact, some are built for very specific purposes and only work with select smart home products. Many smart home hubs now serve multiple functions, working as smart speakers or Wi-Fi routers, so that you get more bang for your buck.

The smart home is still very much in its infancy, and there’s no single hub that’s the ultimate device for smart home control and automation. Still, hubs are getting better over time, and if you’re ready to seriously dive into home automation, there are some great options for you. We've tested and researched the best ones to bring you the five best options you currently have. Before we get to our picks, here are some things to consider.

Things to consider when choosing your hub

  • Compatibility: The most important thing to consider is device compatibility, and that will require a little planning. Smart home hubs are built specifically to work across different standards, but that doesn’t mean they all work with every single smart home device. The most common standard is probably Wi-Fi, but some devices also use Z-Wave, Zigbee, Bluetooth, and more. You’ll want to look at the smart home devices you’re planning to connect to the hub and list out the standards you need before you buy a hub.
  • Voice control: Smart home hubs have started evolving into smart speakers that also connect to a range of smart home devices. The most common of these smart speakers is Amazon Alexa, which connects to smart home devices and allows you to control them using only your voice. Google Home is another option, and Apple will soon release the HomePod, which will work with HomeKit products. You can read all about the smart speakers in our buying guide.
  • The app:Smart home hubs are generally controlled through a smartphone app, and if you’re going to control your home from an app, you’ll want that app to work well. If you find that multiple hubs offer all the standards you need, and you’ve decided whether or not you want voice control, your next determining factor should be how easy the app is to use and how much that app can do.

We've tested a number of the most popular smart home hubs and researched expert reviews to come up with the five best smart home hubs you can currently buy. Read on to see which one is best for your needs.

Although the Samsung SmartThings hub is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Wink Hub 2, the Amazon Echo, the Samsung Connect Home, and the Logitech Harmony Elite.

SEE ALSO: The best smart light bulbs you can buy

The best smart home hub overall

Why you'll love it: The Samsung SmartThings hub offers a ton of connectivity options, has a pretty good app, and costs less than $100.

Samsung's SmartThings hub is a tried and true hub with a ton of great connectivity options and a pretty good app. Samsung has jumped wholeheartedly into the smart home game, not only building a hub, but also a range of sensors and trackers for your home, too, and all of those devices work together pretty well. That’s why the Samsung SmartThings hub is our top pick.

The hub is able to connect to hundreds of different devices, including the motion trackers, smart power outlets, and multi-use trackers we got in our Samsung SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit. It supports a huge range of smart home standards, including Z-Wave, Zigbee, Bluetooth, and, of course, Wi-Fi. It also works with Amazon Alexa, so you can use the hub in conjunction with the Amazon Echo to control your home with your voice.

The Samsung SmartThings app is pretty good, and while it definitely takes some tinkering to get it right, you will get used to using it. Perhaps the main downside to the app is setting up home automation, which is a little tricky. For example, we wanted to set up the motion tracker to turn our lights on and off. Instead of being able to use the same motion tracker to do so, depending on whether the lights were on or off at the time, we would have had to use two motion trackers.

Still, the slightly convoluted app aside, the Samsung SmartThings hub was our favorite of the bunch we tested. We weren’t the only ones who liked it, though — PCMag gave it 4.5/5, while Trusted Reviews gave it a nice 4/5.

Pros: Great connectivity, relatively inexpensive, decent app

Cons: App could use some better automation controls

Buy the Samsung SmartThings hub on Amazon for $91.90 (originally $99.99)

The best smart home hub for compatibility

Why you'll love it: The Wink Hub 2 is inexpensive and easy to use, but the best thing about it is its wide range of connectivity options.

The Samsung SmartThings hub has pretty good connectivity options, but it doesn’t have every connectivity option. The Wink Hub 2, however, comes pretty close. Not only does it have all the connectivity that the SmartThings hub has, but it also offers support for Lutron Clear Connect and for Kidde, so if you’re looking to implement a range of devices with a number of different standards, this might be the one for you. You can check out all the compatible devices here.

When you take the hub out of the box, the first thing you’ll notice about it is its design, specifically how big it is. While it looks good, it’s a little bigger than the other hubs on the list, which is something you’ll want to keep in mind when you’re buying. The size makes sense, though, because Wink had to put all those wireless radios somewhere.

When it comes to the app, the Wink Hub 2 is decent, but those who are looking to get serious with the smart home might get a little frustrated with its limited functionality. That’s not to say it’s bad – it’s not. In fact, it’s very easy to use, but the trade-off there is functionality.

Still, most agree that the Wink Hub 2 is a great hub in general – PCMag gave it 4.5/5, while TechHive gave it a nice 4/5.

Pros: Tons of connectivity options, well-designed, easy-to-use app, inexpensive

Cons: App lacks some advanced features

Buy the Wink Hub 2 on Amazon for $89.95 (originally $99.00)

The best voice-controlled smart home hub

Why you'll love it: The Amazon Echo is compatible with a range of devices and looks great, but people love it for its above-par voice recognition.

Amazon launched the original voice-controlled hub, the Amazon Echo, way back in 2014, but the device has gone above and beyond to stand the test to time. While others have followed suit, like Google with the Google Home, and Apple with the upcoming HomePod, the Echo’s head start has allowed hundreds of developers to build Alexa support into their products. Not only that, but it has also given Amazon time to iron out the kinks and add new features, which it does all the time.

Beyond its excellent voice recognition and control, the Amazon Echo is able to connect to a great range of devices. You can find a full list of compatible devices here. Support for new devices is added all the time, too, so if there’s a device you want to use that isn't supported yet, chances are it will be in the future, provided it works through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, or you have another hub to connect it to.

Now, controlling the Echo is all about using your voice, but there is an app to use as well. From that app, you can add and remove devices, but you won’t be able to actually control individual devices themselves like you can in other apps. On top of that, the Alexa app is limited when it comes to automation, though you can use a third-party app like IFTTT instead.

Pros: Excellent voice recognition, tons of compatibility

Cons: App is a little limited for hardcore smart home users

Buy the Amazon Echo on Amazon for $179.99

Tour Richard Branson's private island where he and his team rode out Hurricane Irma

Necker_ariel_2900x720

Hurricane Irma has brought significant damage to much of the Caribbean as it's barreled towards South Florida.

One of the islands in the path of the "potentially catastrophic" Category 5 hurricane was Necker Island, the British Virgin Island retreat belonging to billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson.

Earlier this week, Branson announced that he and his team would be riding out the storm in the main house's wine cellar.

Following the storm's hit on the island, a spokesperson for the Virgin Group told Business Insider: "Virgin Limited Edition can confirm that on the 6th September 2017 Necker Island sustained extensive damage as a result of Hurricane Irma. There were no guests on Island at the time and all staff staying on Island have been accounted for as safe and well."

This is not the first time that Branson has had to repair the structures on Necker Island. A major fire in 2011 brought major damage to the main house, which took two years to rebuild.

Branson bought the 74-acre island in the British Virgin Islands for $180,000 after visiting in 1978. He has called it "the best financial move" he ever made. The island has been a getaway for celebrities, entrepreneurs, and even former President Barack Obama, who visited shortly after he left the White House in January.

Individual rooms can be rented starting at $4,280 a night, for a week minimum, while the island can be rented as a whole for $78,000 a day.

Take a look around the island as it looked in less stormy times.

Julie Zeveloff and Sophie-Claire Hoeller contributed reporting to earlier versions of this article.

74-acre Necker Island is located in the British Virgin Islands, in the Caribbean Sea.

The island features two "private" beaches (though it's a private island, all beaches up to the high-water mark are open to the public, under British Virgin Islands law), two infinity pools, a swim-up bar, a hot tub that fits 30, a personal chef, and around 100 employees.

Many celebrities have vacationed here, from Princess Diana to Mariah Carey, and even Nelson Mandela. Kate Moss had her 40th birthday party on Necker, and Google co-founder Larry Page had his wedding there.

The best litter box overall

Why you'll love it: The Litter Robot III Open Air Automatic Litter Box is fully automatic, self-cleaning, and simple to maintain — no matter how many cats you have at home.

Cats make wonderful pets but, unfortunately, they don’t do their business outside like dogs do. If you hate scooping litter, you’ll love the Litter Robot III Open Air Automatic Litter Box. Litter Box Hub makes note of the spacious interior which is ideal for cats of all sizes and the open-air design which limits odor buildup. The Litter Robot III is ideal for multi-cat households and it comes with both a 90-day money-back guarantee and an 18-month warranty. Petsho names the Litter Robot III its top pick for automatic litter boxes, praising the device’s sturdy design and high-tech functions. It even comes with a nightlight.

The best covered litter box

Why you'll love it: Sturdily constructed and generously sized, the CatIt Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan gives your cat the privacy he desires and keeps odors to a minimum.

Litter boxes can be divided into two main categories: open or enclosed. Open litter boxes are simple and cost-effective, but they don’t do much to control odors. Covered litter boxes offer more privacy than an open box and they help to contain odors, litter spread, and urine spray. A covered litter box may also be a good choice if you have to keep your litter box out in the open. Our top pick for covered litter boxes is the CatIt Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan.

Durably constructed with a deep litter pan and a large hood, the CatIt Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan is a budget-friendly choice for covered litter boxes. This box features a large opening to accommodate cats of all sizes, and it is perfect for multi-cat households. The hood contains a carbon filtration system, which not only controls odors, but reduces dust as well. This litter box is made from BPA-free materials, and it offers convenient features like a carry handle and side latches to secure the hood in place.

One of Amazon’s top sellers, the CatIt Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan is also included in Heavy’s top ten list for the best litter boxes of 2017. The site comments on the generous size and depth of the box as well as its powerful odor protection. Best Reviews gives this litter box its “Best Bang for the Buck” award, highlighting its affordable price tag as well as its quality construction. This review also notes the carbon filtration system which reduces both dust and odor.

The CatIt Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Pan has nearly 5,000 reviews on Amazon and a solid 4.5-star rating. Buyers love the large size, though some comment on the need for a lot of litter to fill the pan. Overall, however, this litter box receives rave reviews.

Pros: Large size and deep pan, covered design may control odors, filter for improved odor control, side latches keep the lid secured, easy carry handle, good for multi-cat households, high-sided pan to contain urine and litter spray, built-in bag anchor, filtration system controls dust

Cons: Some cats don’t like the covered design, the filter is exposed on top of the hood, some users found the lid hinges a little weak, needs a lot of litter to fill the pan

All these celebrities have homes that lie in the path of Hurricane Irma

Jonny Depp

A host of celebrities including Johnny Depp, Eddie Murphy and Bruce Willis have private islands and homes in the path of destructive Hurricane Irma.

The powerful category 5 hurricane is sweeping through the Caribbean and has already left Richard Branson’s Necker Island home in the British Virgin Islands "uninhabitable".

Meanwhile Donald Trump’s multi-million pound Chateau des Palmiers, or Castle of the Palms, was in the direct path of Irma as it hit the island of St Martin on Wednesday.

St Martin local official Daniel Gibbs described the storm as an "enormous catastrophe" for the island.

Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and Eddie Murphy both own private islands in the Bahamas, as does illusionist David Copperfield.

Their homes in Little Hall's Pond Cay, Rooster Cay and Musha Cay are all in danger of being ravaged by wind and rain over the coming days.

The hurricane could also slam into villas owned by actor Bruce Willis and Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards on Parrot Cay in Turks and Caicos.

Mick Jagger's property on Mustique - an island in St Vincent and the Grenadines - Oprah Winfrey's home on Antigua, and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's pad on St Barts - in Guadeloupe - were also in Irma's path.

Devastating Hurricane Irma has already wreaked havoc across the Caribbean, flattening buildings and killing at least 10 people.

It is the largest storm ever to form in the Atlantic Ocean, is on a collision course with southern Florida and could hit the US state this weekend.

Winds measuring 185 mph blasted the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rica and a chain of Caribbean Islands on Wednesday.

Here are some of the celebrities who's homes could be severly damaged by this massive storm:

Here's how much paid leave new mothers and fathers get in 11 different countries

newborn babies phillipines hurricane 2013

The Trump administration earlier this year included a plan for paid parental leave in its 2018 budget proposal, with a stated goal of offering eligible workers six weeks of leave.

The proposal was a landmark: The US is one of eight the UN's 193-member states that do not already have a national program for paid parental leave. Questions remain whether the proposal will ever make it into policy, but its inclusion highlights a national and international conversation about paid leave.

Business Insider has several editions worldwide, and we asked our international colleagues about the parental-leave policies in their respective countries. Several of them, including Ghana and Singapore, are talking about extending leave periods, and in some other countries, such as Australia, market forces are pushing companies to increase their support for new parents as they look to recruit and retain talent.

Here's what parental leave is like in 11 countries.

Australia: There is a legal requirement to provide 12 months' maternity leave.

How much time off, if any, is afforded before the baby is due? How much time off after the birth is afforded?

Time off before birth is not specified under law, but most women stop work a few weeks before their due date. There is a legal requirement to provide 12 months of maternity leave. New mums can also ask for an extra 12 months, for a range of factors, including if there are complications with health or in the family.

What is the pay during the time off, and how does it change over time?

The payment is $695 per week, for a maximum of 18 weeks. Almost all new mums — anyone on a salary of up to $150,000 per year — can access this. This includes small-business owners and one-person companies — for example, it applies to someone who provides a beautician service from home, even if that business is running at a loss. The qualifying criterion is that the person has been doing the same thing for 10 months of the 13 months before birth.

Is there any support toward childcare costs? How much does childcare cost?

Childcare in Australia is a major social issue, particularly in densely populated areas on the east coast. There is significant support for childcare: 50% of the cost is repaid by the federal government, though this isn't available to families on high incomes. The amount of government relief is capped at over $7,000 per year, a benefit aimed at encouraging people into work after the arrival of additions to the family.

Childcare can cost well in excess of $100 per day in some parts of the major cities. There's a shortage of childcare workers and childcare spaces in the major cities, and successive governments have wrestled with how to tackle it with varying levels of success. As a result, promises to include childcare benefits are a political weapon for the major political parties.

What % of women return to work within a year after childbirth?

Official statistics show that in 2011, over half (53%) of Australian mums had returned to work by the time their child was 2 years of age. For most, this was to part-time or reduced hours of work. It is a legal requirement that the role vacated for maternity leave is still available when a new mum is ready to return to work.

How much time off is afforded for paternity?

New dads get two weeks off, at the national minimum wage of $695, as long as they earned an individual income of $150,000 or less. This ensures most dads get two weeks' paid leave at home.

While these are the legally required minimums, Australia for many years was the only OECD country beyond the US to have no legally mandated maternity leave. This was changed in 2011, with the introduction of maternity leave for at least 12 weeks at the national minimum wage. Parenting support is now a major source of competition in some major professional sectors, with more generous work-life balance and in-office childcare facilities being among major draw cards that companies offer to attract staff.

Paul Colgan, Business Insider Australia

Ghana: There are plans to extend maternity leave from 12 to 16 weeks.

How much time off, if any, is afforded before the baby is due? How much time off after the birth is afforded?

There are plans to extend the maternity leave from 12 weeks to 16 weeks for mothers.

What is the pay during the time off and how does it change over time?

The pay is the same as the salary on an employment contract and does not change.

Is there any support toward childcare costs? How much does childcare cost?

Private companies might enlist employees in health-insurance programs to offset some of the cost of childcare. Childcare is expensive and could cost as much as a $1,000 a month.

What % of women return to work within a year after childbirth?

About 65%.

How much time off is afforded for paternity?

As a father in Ghana, there is no paternity leave by law. But the Constitution Review Implementation Committee has proposed a statutory five-day paternity leave for male workers. In this review, the male worker will still be entitled to his salary.

India: Mothers get 26 weeks' leave.

How much time off, if any, is afforded before the baby is due? How much time off after the birth is afforded?

Female employees can get paid maternity leave for 26 weeks. This benefit can be used by women for a period extending up to eight weeks before the expected delivery date and remaining 18 weeks can be availed after childbirth. But a woman with two or more children already is entitled to 12 weeks' maternity leave (that is, six weeks prenatal and six weeks postnatal expected date of delivery).

What is the pay during the time off and how does it change over time?

A mother is entitled to maternity benefits at the rate of her average daily wage for the period of her absence, for a maximum period of 26 weeks. The average daily wage means the average of the woman's wages payable to her for the days on which she has worked during the period of three calendar months immediately preceding the date from which she absents herself because of maternity.

There is a condition to this: The employee can claim maternity leave only if she has worked at least 80 days for her employer in the past 12 months. The company will pay full wages to her and not just the basic salary.

Is there any support toward childcare costs? How much does childcare cost?

There's no support toward childcare cost yet. But the recent amendment to India’s maternity law that has been passed this year and is effective April 1, 2017, onward, allows:

—A work-from-home option, which may be exercised after the expiry of the 26 weeks leave period. Depending upon the nature of work, female employees may be able to avail this benefit on terms that are mutually agreed with the employer.

—Crèche (day nursery): The MB Amendment Act makes crèche facility mandatory for every establishment employing 50 or more employees. Women employees would be permitted to visit the crèche four times during the day.

What % of women return to work within a year after childbirth?

There is no official data to suggest the exact percentage of women abandoning their career after childbirth, but a survey by industry body Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry suggests that a quarter of women in India don’t return to work after having their babies. This is one of the most credible surveys for reference.

The challenge for India is different than other countries. According to a 2013 World Bank study, only 27% of the female population over 15 is working in India. This is the lowest rate of women's participation in any workforce.

How much time off is afforded for paternity?

There is no provision on paternity leave in Indian labor law for private-sector workers. The civil servants (Central Government), however, are entitled to paternity leave. A male civil servant with less than two children is eligible for paternity leave for a period of 15 days before or up to six months from the date of delivery of the child. Paternity leave must be taken within six months of the birth of child. Workers on paternity leave are paid their leave salary equal to the pay drawn immediately before proceeding on leave.

anna wintour

The semi-annual chaos that is New York Fashion Week has begun, and designers and fashionistas are deep in preparation mode.

Perhaps no one knows the ins and outs of Fashion Week better than Anna Wintour, longtime editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine and artistic director at Conde Nast. Donning her trademark black Chanel sunglasses and perfectly styled bob, Wintour has been a fashion-show fixture for decades.

With an estimated annual salary of $2 million, Wintour leads the kind of lifestyle any fashionista would envy.

Wintour is originally from the UK and moved to New York in her 20s. After stints at Harper's & Queen, Harper's Bazaar, and Viva, Wintour took the helm at Vogue in 1988. At the time, the storied fashion magazine had lost some market share to rival Elle, and its focus had shifted slightly to include lifestyle coverage.

Under Wintour, Vogue reestablished itself as the dominant American fashion magazine.

Wintour has now attended more than 3,000 fashion shows on behalf of Vogue. She has an annual clothing budget that's rumored to be as much as $200,000.

7 insane facts that reveal how big Amazon has become

$

Jeff Bezos

Amazon is hardly the same company it was in 1999, when e-commerce was still a relatively small industry and the budding online retailer exclusively sold books.

Today, the world's fourth-most valuable company ships a mind-boggling number of goods to billions of people around the world.

By some accounts, it has essentially created America's largest company town in Seattle. Recently, Amazon announced plans to spend $5 billion on a second headquarters, for 50,000 employees, somewhere in North America.

There are a number of ways to look at Amazon's size, and each is just as unfathomable as the last.

SEE ALSO: Here's why Amazon's new 30-hour workweek is such a great idea

7.5% of Seattle's working-age population are Amazon employees.

Amazon has more than 300,000 employees worldwide, and 40,000 in Seattle alone.

As a portion of the city's working-age population — roughly 528,000— that comes out to 7.5% of the city working at Amazon.

For perspective, if the same portion of New York City's adults worked for one company, that company would have about 488,000 locals on staff.

Amazon accounts for 43% of all online sales.

Amazon used to be a way to buy books online; today, it's the default buying site for just about everything, especially for people who have Amazon Prime.

An analysis by Slice Intelligence released in February found that 43% of all US online retail sales were done through Amazon in 2016.

That's up from 33% in 2015 and 25% in 2012.

1 out of every 4 US adults has Amazon Prime.

Speaking of Amazon Prime, the company now counts approximately 63 million people among its subscriber base, or about 25% of the total US adult population.

That number may underestimate the true coverage, however, since it doesn't account for multiple adults in one household all sharing the same Prime account.
