On Saturday, Army and Navy will face off on the football field for the 118th time.

As has become the norm in recent years, both academies will wear special uniforms for the game.

Nike (Army) and Under Armour (Navy) unveiled this year's uniforms and they do not disappoint. Take a closer look below.

The uniforms for the West Point cadets are designed to honor the 10th Mountain Division, an elite group that fought the Nazis in the Alps of Northern Italy.

Bill Bowerman, one of Nike's founders, worked with the 10th Mountain Division. He organized the troops' supplies and maintained the mules.

The "Pando Commandos" were trained at Camp Hale, Colorado in 1943, near the Pando Rail Station. The panda bear is the mascot of Camp Hale and is featured prominently on the undershirts and shoes.

In life, there are two kinds of people: Those who dress formally on flights and literally everyone else. While there's nothing wrong with wanting to look your best while traveling, sometimes you just have to prioritize comfort and throw on your coziest hoodie before boarding a plane.

Even some of Hollywood's A-listers can acknowledge just how practical and comfortable heading to the airport in a sweatshirt and leggings can be.

From Rihanna to Zendaya, keep scrolling to see 11 times celebrities traveled in sweats and proved that they're human, too.

On November 29, Chloë Grace Moretz looked comfortable in a gray hoodie and black leggings while traveling through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in Los Angeles, California.

The actress and model finished off her outfit with Vans sneakers for a casually cool look.

Khloe Kardashian looked incognito in an all-black outfit at LAX on November 28.

Kardashian took her outfit to the next level with a pair of oversized sunglasses and shiny leggings.

Gwen Stefani dressed up an embroidered crewneck with a pair of patchwork boyfriend jeans while traveling through LAX on November 28.

Tiger Woods has returned from his 4th back surgery — here's a look at his long odyssey to get back to the game's top level

Tiger Woods

Over four years after his last victory, Tiger Woods remains the biggest story in golf, and it's not even close.

Between Sergio Garcia's Masters win, Justin Thomas' breakout season, and Jordan Spieth's continued climb towards immortality, there were a number of big developments in the professional game this year. And yet, none of them moved the needle as much as Woods' week at the Hero World Challenge, his first competitive action since undergoing spinal fusion surgery.

It was a successful week for the 14-time major champion, so fans are obviously excited. But it's not like we haven't been down this road before — the spinal fusion was Woods' fourth back surgery, and his past comebacks to competition haven't always been smooth. The legend's journey to regain his pre-2014 form has become one of the most compelling odysseys in sports, full of twists, turns, glimmers of hope, and, ultimately, disappointments.

Below, relive Woods' long road back to the PGA Tour and see why golf fans should consider tempering their expectations in the months ahead.

In case you haven't heard, Tiger Woods has returned to competitive golf.

The 14-time major champion spent most of 2017 recovering from spinal fusion surgery, his fourth back procedure in the past four years. When he circled the Hero World Challenge as the site of his return, many fans were left wondering how his body would hold up during the four-day grind.

Woods quickly answered those questions, shooting three rounds in the 60s en route to T-9 finish. Along the way, he was applauded for his revamped swing and seemingly relaxed state of mind.

The 15 biggest differences between British and American weddings

0

weddings america england

With the fast-approaching nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle— maybe you’ve heard of them? — it is quite likely that the topic of weddings is at the forefront of your mind.

But, if you are an American, one thing you may not realize is that the wedding you’re envisioning for Harry and Meghan isn’t exactly the one that’s going to happen.

This isn’t only because their wedding will be fit for royalty. As it turns out, there are a bunch of interesting, and fundamental differences between weddings in America versus those across the pond.

So, while you wait for your invite to the wedding of the year check out these surprising differences between British and American weddings.

British wedding toasts are more like roasts

At an American wedding, you can generally expect the toasts and speeches to rely heavily on sap and sentimentality. But at British weddings, the toasts might seem, well, rather rude.

According to Vogue, the goal of wedding speeches in the UK is to fully mortify its recipient. So, if you’re giving a toast in the US, you can prepare your standard touchy-feely fare. If you’re giving one in England, just pretend like you’re getting ready for a roast.

If you’re a woman, you probably won’t give a toast

According to Cosmopolitan, British weddings traditionally only have three sets of speeches —one from the groom, one from the father of the bride, and one from the best man.

British wedding guests wear hats

One thing you can definitely be prepared to see at the upcoming royal wedding is some fancy headwear. According to PureWow, it is royal protocol for all royal women to wear hats on official occasions. (So, yes — Kate Middleton is going to be wearing one at the upcoming royal wedding.)

And if you were wondering, this isn’t just a royal thing — according to Vogue, almost every wedding outfit in the UK tends to be topped off (literally) with a fancy hat or fascinator.

The best value plays in your DraftKings lineup for Week 14 of the NFL season

0
0

Alfred Morris

We had a solid week of daily fantasy value picks last Sunday, with a few players putting on performances that could've helped you cash in your DraftKings league.

Jermaine Kearse went off for 157 yards on nine receptions and ended up as the sixth-best wide receiver in fantasy, and Alex Collins found the end zone twice to finish as a top-five running back for the cheap price of just $4,500. Other than Tyrod Taylor, who went down with an unlucky injury in his first snap of the game, the rest of our picks were pretty solid as well.

This week, we're back at it, trying to identify the best, affordable players for your DraftKings lineup. Below we've picked some of our best value plays for daily fantasy. Consider them when trying to find a few extra dollars to upgrade elsewhere in your lineup.

QB: Jimmy Garoppolo, $5,500

Jimmy Garoppolo had quite a debut on Sunday, throwing for just under 300 yards to help lead the 49ers to their second win of the season in comeback fashion over the Chicago Bears. The one thing that Jimmy G didn't do was find the end zone, a career goal he'll surely be eager to cross off this week. He looked like a seasoned pro in the pocket and at $5,500, feels like something of a steal facing a Texans defense that rates near the bottom of the league.

RB: Alfred Morris, $5,500

Alfred Morris finally had the game we thought him capable of having in Ezekiel Elliott's absence, running for 127 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys' blowout win over the Redskins last week. Morris will likely be heavily featured in the Dallas offense again when they face the Giants this weekend.

RB: Giovani Bernard, $3,100

While Giovani Bernard has been relatively quiet this season, with Joe Mixon out with a concussion this week, Bernard will be getting the start for the Bengals and is an absolute steal at just $3,100.

10 people whose random acts of kindness took over the internet

The world isn't always a friendly, happy place, but there are some nice people out there who spread kindness just because — and end up becoming internet-famous as a result.

Here are 10 stories of people who went viral with their random acts of kindness.

Strangers bought a car for a fast food worker after finding out he walked 3 miles to and from work every day.

Andy Mitchell offered a ride to a man he saw walking on the side of the road in 95 degree Texas heat.

The man, Justin Corva, told Mitchell that he walked three miles to and from work every day because he couldn't afford a car.

Inspired by his tenacity, Mitchell snapped a selfie with him and posted it on Facebook. Local business owners heard about Corva's situation and came together to raise enough money to provide him with a 2004 Toyota Camry, a year of insurance, two years of oil changes, and $500 of gas.

Corva's emotional reaction streamed on Facebook Live garnered around 358,000 views.

A dad asked the internet to send his bullied son birthday wishes and "broke Twitter" when celebrities responded.

A Twitter user named Christopher (@Hopenlesmyth) asked people on Twitter if they knew of someone famous who could send birthday messages to his son Ollie for his ninth birthday. In a series of tweets, he explained that Ollie was being bullied by someone who kept making him feel worthless, and that he could use some positive energy on his big day.

Ollie's parents were overwhelmed by the number of kind, enthusiastic responses — 6,500 replies and 14,000 retweets, to be exact. People around the world sent Ollie their best, as did celebrities like actor Russell Crowe and YouTube stars Alfie Deyes and Zoe Sugg.

Mark Chalifoux sent 40 pounds of cookies to a soldier he'd never met.

Mark Chalifoux was accidentally added to a family's group chat as they discussed sending care packages to "Christian" (name changed to protect his privacy), a relative of theirs serving in the military.

Instead of replying "wrong number" and forgetting about it, Chalifoux started a GoFundMe page to raise money to buy cookies for Christian and his unit. The silly but heartfelt campaign gained momentum as it was shared by celebrities on Facebook and picked up by news outlets. A local Girl Scouts troop even donated cookies of their own.

Chalifoux raised enough money to send 40 pounds of cookies, plus a second shipment of essentials like toiletries and more nutritious non-perishable snacks, to the soldier. He's still receiving their group text messages.

The best career advice of 2017

0

job fair career resume application learning

2017 is almost over. A new year is nearly upon us. It's a time for resolutions and reflection.

So it's not a bad time to think about improvements and tweaks we can make to our own careers.

Business Insider has interviewed numerous successful people about their career experiences and insight. We boiled down the mountain of advice to a few standouts we found particularly interesting.

Here's some of the best advice we heard this year:

SEE ALSO: 15 powerful women share the best career advice they've ever received

Be intentional with your time

Facebook product design VP Julie Zhuo spends much of the day in meetings.

But before she plunges into these conversations with her teams and direct reports, she likes to make a game plan.

"I try to be very intentional about my time,"she previously told Business Insider. "It's easy to get into the habit of reacting to what's happening during the day."

That means examining exactly what she wants to accomplish in every meeting.

"I go into every meeting with an idea of what I want to do or say," she said. "That makes it much, much easier when you're contact-switching between many different things."

Stay humble and work hard

It's one thing to pay lip service to humility and work ethic. But it's another to truly demonstrate they're in line with your values during a job interview.

Daniel Schwartz, the CEO of Restaurant Brands International — the parent company of Burger King, Tim Hortons, and Popeyes — said he always vets job candidates with a certain tricky question to get a better sense of their values.

"One question I ask is, 'Are you smart or do you work hard?'" he told Adam Bryant of The New York Times.

And, Business Insider reported, there's definitely a right answer.

"You want hard workers," he said. "You'd be surprised how many people tell me, 'I don't need to work hard, I'm smart.' Really? Humility is important."

Lead with hard work and humility when presenting yourself in your professional life.

Success is about people — not plans

Plans can only get you so far. If you want to really kick your career into high gear, you're going to need help from other people.

That's something LinkedIn cofounder and investor Reid Hoffman learned firsthand.

In an interview with Business Insider's podcast "Success! How I Did It," he advised everyone to build "as strong a network as possible, because that's the thing that most catapults you, in terms of your capabilities, in terms of your abilities to do things."

I live in New York and my boyfriend lives in Australia — here are my tips for a long-distance relationship

0

Insider_PeruwithIntrepidTravel

I’ll be honest, it wasn’t love at first sight with my boyfriend. But it didn’t take long for our vacation fling to turn into a full-blown committed relationship.

I met him more three years ago during an Intrepid Travel trip through Southeast Asia and it took us less than three weeks to decide we didn’t want to be with anyone else.

So we embarked on the cruel, and often-torturous, journey of a long-distance relationship. When I say long distance I mean it — I’m a New Yorker and he’s from Melbourne, Australia.

The distance between us is over 16,500 miles and it takes well over 24 hours to get there by plane. There is a 12+ hour time difference between the two.

Despite the difficulties and the occasional tears, I've learned some important things from my long-distance relationship. Here's what I know to be true:

Patience is key

When you’re wrapped up in your relationship, it’s hard to remember that your partner has a whole other life that you don’t quite understand. They have a job, a social life, and family needs that take up their time.

As much as you’d like to spend hours on the phone with each other, they’ve got to be on time to work and so do you. Patience is key in these situations. Sometimes that may mean waiting for a weekly Skype call on Sundays, but it’s worth the wait.

You have to trust each other

Trusting your partner can be difficult, even for couples living in the same town. But when you live miles away, things get even trickier.

There’s no use stalking the people leaving comments on their Instagram or their latest Facebook friend. You just have to believe what your partner tells you because as soon as you start to distrust each other, a breakup is imminent.

Skype is your best friend

Talking on the phone is great, but actually seeing your partner’s face makes the conversation way more meaningful. In a relationship where getting close isn’t always easy, being able to see the other person is a much-needed intimacy builder.

Every single photo in the Kardashian family's epic '25 days of Christmas' card

While the average American family might send the same holiday card to friends and relatives, the Kardashians are unveiling a 25-part photo series to tease their full holiday card — with one photo for every day in December leading up to Christmas.

Like everything the Kardashians do, their "25 days of Christmas" card is carefully curated for social media, with family members including Kim Kardashian West and Kris Jenner sharing one picture from the card every day.

Each photo highlights a different member of the brood — as Kardashian West told James Corden on "The Late Late Show," this year's card is limited to the women and kids in the family — captured by the photographer Eli Russell Linnetz.

In the midst of reports alleging that Kylie Jenner and Khloe Kardashian are expecting babies, according to Bustle, some people are speculating that the family is leading up to a big reveal of the news in this year's card. For that reason alone, it's worth keeping track of the pictures as they are released.

Below, take a look at every piece of the puzzle so far.

Day One's photo set the tone for the rest of the holiday card: Saint West stood next to a stack of holiday gifts amid a white background and a Christmas tree, partially cut out of the frame.

8 head-scratching things Roy Moore has said about slavery, evolution, and more

0
0

Roy Moore's campaign for a Senate seat in Alabama seemed to rebound to some degree this week, despite multiple allegations from women who said he pursued varying levels of sexual contact with them when they were teens and he was in his 30s.

But a new focus on Moore's previous public statements on controversial topics also gained traction of late, just days ahead of the Alabama special election set for December 12.

Here are some of Moore's most controversial viewpoints:

SEE ALSO: All the women who have accused Roy Moore of sexual misconduct

1. Moore on whether former President Barack Obama is a natural-born US citizen: "My personal belief is that he wasn't," the Alabama judge told members of the Constitution Party in 2016.

Here's the full quote: "My personal belief is that he wasn't, but that's probably over and done in a few days, unless we get something else to come along."

Moore made those remarks in 2016, months after then-candidate Donald Trump publicly reversed his position on the matter and acknowledged that Obama was indeed born in the US.

2. "Homosexual conduct should be illegal."

Moore, who identifies as an evangelical Christian and views homosexuality as a lifestyle that is "against nature," said in a 2005 interview on C-SPAN2 that he believes "homosexual conduct should be illegal." In 2006, he wrote two op-eds criticizing the Bush administration for appointing an openly gay man to a government position.

Sources: C-SPAN2 and CNN

3. Moore suggested that the 9/11 terror attacks happened because America "distanced" itself from God.

During a February address at a church in Alabama, Moore drew parallels between the September 11, 2001 terror attacks and America having "distanced" itself from God.

He made a similar suggestion in 2003 during a speech at Georgetown University, pointing to a Bible scripture that spoke of a "day of great slaughter, when the towers fall," adding "there are consequences when we turn away from our source of our strength."

In August, Moore made a similar argument on mass shootings in the US, claiming America "asked for it," because it has "taken God out of everything."

5 major fires are raging in Southern California — here's the latest size, location, and damage of each

California wildfires December 2017

Firefighters are battling a series of out-of-control wildfires in Los Angeles, Ventura, and San Diego counties, and the blazes are showing no signs of slowing.

A new fire, the Lilac Fire, broke out in San Diego County on Thursday evening, prompting further evacuations and school closures.

State officials say more than 168,000 acres throughout the region are burning from five major blazes. Over 5,000 firefighters have been deployed to combat the fires, and authorities have closed major highways, canceled school, and ordered close to 200,000 people to evacuate.

The fire danger was a 296 on the brush burning index on Thursday — a record high, according to CNN. The figure is calculated based on a range of factors including moisture levels, wind, and humidity. A rating above 162 is considered the most extreme risk.

While high winds subsided somewhat on Friday, forecasters are expecting gusts of about 60 mph.

The first and largest blaze, the Thomas Fire, started Monday night in Ventura County. The Creek Fire near Sylmar and the Rye Fire in Santa Clarita broke out in the early hours of Tuesday morning, and the Skirball Fire, centered on the wealthy Bel Air neighborhood in Los Angeles, started Wednesday morning.

Here are the locations of all the fires, as well the most recent total acreage burning as of Friday morning.

Thomas Fire, Ventura County

The Thomas Fire is burning 143,000 acres and has destroyed at least 439 structures out of at least 15,000 threatened. Firefighters have contained 10% of the blaze as high winds continue to whip the fire.

Officials ordered further evacuations in the Ojai area as high winds pushed the fire closer to populated areas on Thursday. A woman's body was found near a vehicle in a burn area near Ojai, but officials have not yet determined a cause of death.

Creek Fire, Sylmar

As of Friday night, all evacuation orders were lifted in areas around Sylmar that were affected by the Creek Fire.

The inferno has burned 15,619 acres, and officials estimate it has destroyed at least 56 homes and damaged 45 others, according to the state fire agency Cal Fire. Another 49 structures were destroyed and 25 were damaged out of at least 2,500 threatened. Firefighters have managed to contain 70% of the blaze.

Rye Fire, Santa Clarita

The Rye Fire has burned 6,049 acres near Santa Clarita, and firefighters have contained 50% of the fire. Authorities said nearly 5,500 homes were still threatened as of Friday night.

LONDON — Many countries around the world are struggling with rising debts and deficits, but others have consistently kept their obligations low.

The World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Survey examines the financial health and risks of countries around the world.

Many maintain low levels of public debt thanks to large supplies of natural resources, while others have pursued liberal market reforms which have made fiscal discipline a central policy.

Here are the 17 countries with the lowest level of government debt.

11. Kazakhstan — 21.1%.

Oil-rich Kazakhstan runs Samruk-Kazyna, a sovereign wealth fund owned solely by the state which runs the national rail and postal service, the state oil and gas firm KazMunayGas, the state uranium company, and numerous other groups.

10. Algeria — 20.4%.

Algeria's government has consistently refused to resort to high levels of external debt to finance its economy, instead relying on oil reserves. Reuters reports that the North African state's economy will grow a healthy 4%, well above initial forecasts of 2.2% and above this year's growth rate of 3.7%.

9. United Arab Emirates —19.3%.

The country owns a huge sovereign wealth fund which invests funds from the country's excess oil reserves. It is estimated to be worth over $1.3 trillion.

THE $10 BILLION CLUB: Meet the most valuable startups in the US

0
0

Elon Musk

Over the past several years, we've seen a rise in private companies valued at more than one billion dollars — the so-called "unicorns."

But when too many startups became unicorns, a new class of startups emerged: "decacorns,"companies valued at more than $10 billion.

These are the Ubers and Airbnbs of the world; the startups that steadfastly remain private companies as they load up with hundreds of millions of dollars in funding at ever higher valuations.

With help from Pitchbook, we've compiled a list of the US startups valued at more than $10 billion by private investors. Whether they eventually go public, or stay privately held, these companies already have a huge influence on the tech industry.

Here are the seven most valuable startups in the US:

SEE ALSO: Here are the top 20 apps of the year, according to Apple

7. Dropbox

Valuation: $10 billion

CEO Drew Houston

Dropbox reached its $10 billion valuation in 2014 after a $617 million funding round. Since then, the company has shifted its focus to business customers, launching Dropbox Enterprise in 2015.

The company began to cut back its lavish spending on employee perks in 2016, something that was costing the company $25,000 per year per employee. While Dropbox doesn't disclose its financials, it's reported to have generated more than $500 million in revenue last year. CEO Drew Houston said in 2016 that the company is free cash flow positive, which is a milestone for a fast-growth tech company.

News broke in July that Dropbox was working with Goldman Sachs on the paperwork for an initial public offering, but it's looking like the company won't file until at least next year.

6. Samumed

Valuation: $12 billion

CEO Osman Kibar, CFO Cevdet Samikoglu, and chief medical officer Yusuf Yazici

San Diego-based Samumed is a health tech company focused on reversing aging. The startup has attracted $300 million in venture funding and a massive valuation, all thanks to a pipeline of what could be revolutionary treatments to regenerate hair, skin, bones, and joints.

Samumed was founded in 2008 and came out of stealth mode about two years ago when it started presenting some of its data. The startup is in the midst of several clinical trials and completed a 52-week Phase II clinical trial of an osteoarthritis treatment in July.

5. Pinterest

Valuation: $12.3 billion

CEO Ben Silbermann

In June 2017, Pinterest raised $150 million in funding from existing investors at a $12.3 billion valuation, bringing the app maker's valuation up slightly from $11 billion in April 2015.

The service, a combination of social network and online scrapbook, has more than 175 million monthly active users, over half of whom are international. The company has expanded its focus in recent months to overseas markets like the UK, France, Germany, Japan, and Brazil, and has doubled down on increasing the advertising on its platform. Last August, Pinterest acquired online bookmarking service Instapaper

Pinterest reportedly expects to make $500 million in ad revenue this year, up 67% from $300 million in 2016.

Rumors swirled throughout 2016 that Pinterest was on the brink of going public, but its most recent influx of funding means an IPO could be delayed even further.

Boeing 777 787 factory tour

  • Boeing's Everett, Washington facility is one of the largest buildings in the world.
  • It's where Boeing builds the 747, 767, 777, and 787 Dreamliner.
  • Business Insider took a tour of the 777 and 787 production lines in October.

The Boeing 777 and the 787 Dreamliner are two of hottest selling wide-body airliners in the world. The dynamic duo has effectively supplanted the iconic 747 jumbo jet as the Boeing's go-to plane for long-haul flying.

At Boeing's Everett, Washington fact0ry, the two are also built side-by-side. Everett isn't Boeing's only factory. The 737 is built nearby in Renton, Washington while the 787-10 is produced exclusively in North Charleston, South Carolina.

But, Everett remains Boeing's most famous and storied production facility. According to Boeing, its Everett facility is large enough to encompass "all of Disneyland with 12 acres left over for parking."

In October, Boeing gave Business Insider a tour of the 777 and 787 production lines ahead of the delivery of the first Qantas 787-9 Dreamliner.

Here's an inside look at Boeing's Everett, Washington factory.

9 abandoned nuclear bunkers that have been transformed into stunning spaces

Banket Bunker 42

Decades after World War II and the Cold War, the world is agonizing over nuclear threats from North Korea.

The country recently tested its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile to date, which leader Kim Jong Un claims can reach the United States. North Korea's foreign ministry also said on Wednesday that war on the Korean peninsula is "inevitable."

These warnings may be one reason why some people — from Tokyo to Australia to the US— are showing an interest in purchasing bunkers designed to preserve life in the event of a nuclear explosion.

Many 20th century bunkers have, however, been repurposed since nuclear threats seemed to have waned in recent decades. Architects have turned old bunkers into all sorts of creative spaces, including farms, nightclubs, and apartments.

Take a look at these transformations below.

A luxury apartment building in Germany

Built in the early 1940s, this above-ground bunker in Siegen, Germany had a long and narrow layout. It was meant to protect civilians in the event of air raids, according to German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

Architects from local firm Modulbuero transformed it into a luxury apartment complex in 2016. The minimalist units feature all the fixings of modern homes: bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, huge windows, storage, and balconies with sliding glass doors.

A theater and co-working space in Germany

Now called Medienbunker, this former shelter was a WWII anti-aircraft tower in Hamburg, Germany.

In 2000, a film production company called PYP turned it into a theater and co-working space for companies that focus on the arts.

The building hosts graphic design and dance classes, a radio station, and a music hall. Independent filmmakers also regularly screen their works there.

An event space, restaurant, and museum in Russia

Completed in 1956, Bunker-42 stretches 75,000 square feet and lies 213 feet underground in Moscow. When it was a bunker, the complex could feed up to 3,000 people for 90 days in the event of a nuclear blast.

The bunker was decommissioned after 30 years, and in 2006, it was turned into a space that functions as a Cold War museum, karaoke bar, restaurant, wedding venue, and conference space under the same name.
