Groundhog Day is one big party — here's what it's like to experience in person

groundhog

There are few traditions more distinctly American than Groundhog Day.

Although most people hear of the infamous groundhog Phil's weather prediction via a quick blurb in their morning news on February 2, the event is a very real pilgrimage to Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where tens of thousands gather to watch the little guy come out of his hole and pray that he doesn't see his shadow.

This is where my adventure begins.

SEE ALSO: A look inside the marriage of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bundchen, who are worth $540 million, planned their wedding in 10 days, and have spoken every day for 11 years

Groundhog Day, despite being celebrated nationwide in America, stems from European legend. A groundhog comes out of its hole. If it sees its shadow and retreats back into its hole, it's considered a bad omen, and there will be six more weeks of winter. No shadow seen? Early spring. It's celebrated on February 2 every year in multiple cities and towns across America.

But no celebration is as grand as the one held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. This small town fills with thousands of travelers who are there to see the most important man of that day predict the weather. Punxsutawney Phil emerges in the wee hours of the morning of February 2. But the celebrating starts many hours before …

I was attending Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 2012 when I decided to meet a friend in Punxsutawney. Having grown up in Pennsylvania, I'd always heard that it was a great party. As the photo editor for our campus paper at the time, I brought along a camera.

As I drove into town on the night of February 1, I was surprised to see very little signage telling me where to go. Thousands of people? Where was everyone?

I pulled into a Walmart parking lot and rolled down my window as I approached the first person I saw. "Where's the party?" I asked. "Right here," he said, and subsequently handed me an adult beverage.

The biggest box-office hit the year you were born

Back to the Future

Moviegoing has been one of America's favorite ways to kill time for about a century now, and box-office earnings have been a reliable predictor of what we love and, sometimes, continue to love.

Using lists of the highest-grossing films by year from IMDbBox Office Mojo, and The Numbers, Business Insider has compiled a chronology of the biggest box-office hits every year since 1930*.

We adjusted global box-office receipts for inflation through 2017 using the Bureau of Labor Statistics' inflation calculator. We've also included critic ratings from Metacritic (on a scale of 1 to 100) and fan ratings from IMDb (on a scale of 1 to 10) for each film where available.

However, we used 1975 as the cutoff for global box office because worldwide figures before then were spotty and inconsistent. For films prior to 1975, we've provided adjusted and unadjusted domestic box office instead.

Several franchises are represented — "Star Wars,""Terminator,""Harry Potter"— as are Academy Award winners and classics like "The Sound of Music" and "Rocky."

Read on to find out the highest-grossing movie released the year you were born:

*Note: A couple years in the 1930s are missing due to lack of information. Movies before 1930 were not included due to unreliable box-office data.

This post has been updated and expanded from its original version.

YouTube is the new TV.

Since 2005, YouTube has become the de facto launchpad for the next generation of celebrities.

Stars like PewDiePie, Jenna Marbles, and Yuya have racked up millions of subscribers over the years through a direct relationship with their fans.

From comedians to gamers to vloggers of all kinds, YouTubers have generally built their followings outside of the control of media giants, even if they are now signing big deals with those companies. And there is power and independence in having that huge fan base.

To get a closer look into which stars rule YouTube, we looked at the SocialBlade rankings to see who had the most subscribers. We focused on independent YouTube stars, disregarding YouTube channels like mainstream music artists.

Here's how the new generation of YouTube stars stacks up in 2018:

Nina Godlewski, Harrison Jacobs, Maya Kosoff, and Nathan McAlone contributed to earlier versions of this post.

The makers of 'Grand Theft Auto' have a new game coming later this year, and it’s drop dead gorgeous

The company that makes "Grand Theft Auto" isn't known for pumping out games. You may recall that the latest "GTA" game came out in 2013 — that's the most recent release from Rockstar Games.

But a new game from Rockstar is just on the horizon: "Red Dead Redemption 2."

Red Dead Redemption 2

The relentlessly gorgeous "Red Dead Redemption 2" is still many months away — it was recently delayed to October 26. When it does arrive, it's headed to the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.

So, what's "Red Dead Redemption 2" all about? Is it basically "Grand Theft Horse?" Let's dive in.

SEE ALSO: The huge next game from the team behind 'Grand Theft Auto' just got delayed by half a year

Unlike "GTA," the "Red Dead" series is set in the American frontier. That means campfires and starry skies.

It also means gunslingers and six-shooters and bandit masks. This isn't just a tale of America's Wild West, but a tale of cowboys, robbers, and the evolution of American society.

Rockstar characterizes the game's story as an "outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland."

Pepsi Super Bowl

The Super Bowl isn't the Super Bowl without its ads, but luckily you don't need to wait until Sunday to watch them.

This year, NBC is reportedly charging $5 million per 30 seconds of commercial showing time. Some of the world's biggest companies have spent millions on a premium spot for Sunday night's show.

Find out what we know so far, based on a list put together by iSpotTV and what we've seen so far online:

This year's game will be broadcast on NBC at 6.30 p.m. ET, Sunday, February 4.

Amazon's 90-second, star-studded ad for its Alexa-enabled devices could have cost the retailer around $15 million, based on NBC's estimate of each 30-second ad costing $5 million.

In the ad, Alexa loses her voice and is replaced by a host of celebrities, including Rebel Wilson and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos also makes an appearance.

The video currently has over 7.9 million views on YouTube after being posted Wednesday.

Bud Light

Bud Light is bringing back its popular Dilly Dilly ads for the Super Bowl, Adweek reported.

In 2017, the company launched a series of ads that went viral thanks to their constant appearances during commercial breaks in NFL and college football games.

The brand didn't expect them to be so successful.

"It didn't test that well. We did that ad, actually, because of – the new season of 'Game of Thrones' coming, but when we tested, it didn't test that well. We said, 'Consumers will get it,'" Chief Marketing Officer Miguel Patricio of parent company Anheuser-Busch InBev told Business Insider in December.

The company's latest Super Bowl ad has not yet been revealed, but you can watch one of its previous Dilly Dilly commercials here.

Emirates' business class lounge in Dubai has showers, beds, and a full bar — take a look inside

Emirates Business Class Lounge Dubai

  • Emirates operates three business class lounges in Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3.
  • The three lounges can accommodate more than 4,600 passengers at one time.
  • The lounges are all equipped with marble floors, bars, dining rooms, gold-plated Rolex clocks, as well as places to rest and work.

There are varying schools of thought when it comes spending time at the airport. Some prefer to get and out of the airport as quickly as possible. While others, like my colleague Matt DeBord, prefer to take their time, enjoy the terminal's many facilities, and make a day of it.

Personally, I tend to show up at the airport several hours before my flight. Mostly because I'm pathological when it comes to the fear of missing my flight.

But before a recent flight from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to New York, I decided to change things up and arrive a few hours early to simply enjoy the comforts of Emirates Airline's business class lounge.

My flight was scheduled to depart from Emirates' palatial home base in Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3. The terminal features three business class lounges capable of handling more than 4,600 people at a time.

Here's a closer look at my morning at the Emirates Business Class Lounge in Dubai.

After checking into my flight and going through security, I head towards Terminal 3's Concourse A. This also required a short ride on a people mover and an elevator ride to the main departure level of the concourse.

After another elevator ride, I reached Emirates' business class lounge. It's one of three business class lounges in the terminal. The business class lounge is normally available to business class passengers as well as frequent flyers. But travelers can also pay a fee of $100 to get access.

While most airport lounges are made up of a few rooms in the terminal, the Emirates lounges take an entire level in Concourse A. And it's also absolutely massive. It can accommodate more than 2,500 passengers.

We tried Olive Garden's new 'Italian nachos' — and they're actually weirdly good

Olive Garden Nachos

  • Olive Garden has new "Italian nachos" on the menu.
  • People's reactions are mixed — they're hardly Italian, but the idea is strangely intriguing.
  • Amazingly, they're weirdly tasty and not as gross as expected.

Olive Garden is continuing its storied tradition of, well, redefining Italian cuisine with its debut of loaded Italian nachos.

Wait ... nachos? From Olive Garden? Yes, yes. A month into 2018 and its absurdities are just now beginning to unfold.

Olive Garden added these "nachos" to the menu last week, and they'll be available until April 1 — a sort of drawn-out pre-April Fool's joke, we can only assume.

The dish consists of fried lasagna sheets playing the role of chips — an interesting choice for an understudy, to say the least. Heaped atop them are cheese, a three-meat ragu, peppers, and a drizzle of alfredo sauce.

It's an audacious, pugnacious, and ostentatious move for a chain most beloved and reviled for its decidedly and unabashedly Americanized takes on Italian culinary tradition.

We managed to grab some in order to see just how crazy these "nachos" are, and more importantly, to find out if they're any good.

SEE ALSO: Taco Bell is taking aim at McDonald's with $1 fries — and they're like nothing else in fast food

Only something this awesome ("awesome," as in "awe-inspiring and terrifying") could make a trip to Times Square, where the nearest Olive Garden is, worth it for a New Yorker. Alas, we do what we must ...

... as does Olive Garden. And they are charged with the task — nay, duty — to fearlessly experiment with the culinary traditions of the Italian peninsula and bring to us their discoveries and creations.

Lo and behold, here they are. Fried squares of lasagna pasta sheets, slathered in a ragu, smothered in mozzarella and parmesan, dotted with cherry peppers, and drizzled with Alfredo sauce.

A quick guide to every major character on Netflix's 'Altered Carbon'

Takeshi Quell and Rei Altered Carbon Character guide

Netflix's new sci-fi series "Altered Carbon" is a cyberpunk noir story set in a world where human consciousness can be downloaded into any new body (or "sleeve"). This advance in technology means that the same person can appear in multiple forms throughout the show's 10 episodes.

Whether you've just started watching "Altered Carbon" or binged the whole series and need help dissecting the characters, keep reading for a look at the main characters on the show.

Takeshi Kovacs (present day in "Altered Carbon" season one)

Takeshi Kovacs — pronounced co-vach — is the protagonist of "Altered Carbon," but we see him in three different sleeves throughout season one. The present-day version of Takeshi is played by Joel Kinnaman (as seen above).

Takeshi Kovacs (as seen in flashbacks to his time with the Envoys)

This sleeve is the one Kovacs spent most of his life with. In a Netflix press release, Lee's version of Kovacs is referred to as the "Original Sleeve" or "OG Takeshi Kovacs."

Takeshi Kovacs (from the opening season one scene where he is arrested)

This Kovacs-sleeve is seen the least in season one of "Altered Carbon." But he is the first Kovacs shown on screen. This is the sleeve Kovacs used while on the run after the Envoys were destroyed at Stronghold (and it's the one he was killed in before being put into storage for 250 years).

What it’s like inside the headquarters of 'Russian Google,' the biggest tech company in the country

Yandex

One building in downtown Moscow is home to more than 5,000 minds powering the largest technology company in Russia.

Yandex is the Russian internet technology firm with a diverse sphere of pursuits and offerings, well-contextualized as “Russian Google.” With the Cyrillic character Я (pronounced “ya”) denoting the personal pronoun “I,” co-founders Arkady Volozh and Ilya Segalovich coined the name “Yandex” in 1993 as a bilingual pun on “index,” launching it as a humble search engine in 1997.

In the 20 years since, the company has grown explosively and seems poised to maintain the trend. The bulk of its revenues comes through the sale of ads shown against its search results; 2016 revenue was 75.9 billion rubles ($1.25 billion USD at the time), representing 27 percent growth from 2015.

Its free consumer services include a mapping app, language translation software, an email service, cloud storage, a streaming music platform, and a taxi-hailing service. Its proprietary browser, Yandex Browser, is available on just about any platform you can name, and the company even has its own driverless car initiative.

Just as VKontakte has a strong corollary as “Russian Facebook,” Yandex is surely “Russian Google.” It represents some of the primary infrastructure of the Russian-speaking internet.

The search engine that started it all — www.yandex.ru — still rules the local search market, and its physical space in Moscow’s Khamovniki district is the stronghold of technological might and human know-how that makes it possible. Yandex’s multi-story complex occupies nearly a complete city block, filled with places for employees to not only work, but to unwind as well.

We recently got a tour of this impressive space, located a short walk away from Moscow’s Kultury Park metro station.

As we approach our destination, we notice this fenced-off historic estate. It’s the former home of celebrated Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, literally giving this street its name. Yandex’s Moscow headquarters are located on “Leo Tolstoy’s Street.”

Across the street from a site of artistic history, Yandex engineers compute the future. Here’s an external view of the complex — it’s a chilly winter day, so let’s hurry up and get inside.

We meet our tour guides, Christina and Matvey, at reception.

We drove a $58,000 BMW X3 to see if it's worth the price tag — here's the verdict

$
0
0

BMW X3

  • The BMW X3 is new for its third-generation.
  • The popular SUV has been selling well in SUV-mad America.
  • We sampled the X3 xDrive 30i, which can get a bit pricey — and might be a little too bimmer for folks who just want a German luxury ute for the family.

BMW sold over 40,000 X3 compact crossover SUVs in the US last year and can look forward to similar numbers in 2018.

This is probably why the X3 is among the bestselling American-made German luxury crossovers: it's built in South Carolina, to be nice and close to its most important market.

BMWs are BMWs — the ultimate driving machines. But while SUVs can be a joy to drive, that's not necessarily their core mission. Thanks to its scale and price-tag, the X3 is meant to satisfy a wide range of bimmer buyers, everybody from folks moving away from the legendary 3-Series sedans to people who don't quite want to jump into the larger X5.

BMW does has the smaller X1 and recently introduced X2 to tempt entry-level customers who wouldn't look twice at a sedan. But the X3 is where many BMW owners and leasers will begin their journey with the Bavarian brand.

We recently spent some time with a 2018 X3 xDrive 30i, in one of its natural environments: the northern New Jersey suburbs, just across the Hudson River from New York City. Here's how it went.

FOLLOW US: On Facebook for more car and transportation content!

SEE ALSO: We drove a $90,000 Lincoln Navigator for a week and saw why Ford can't build the SUV fast enough

An unexpected snowstorm in the area added an early morning dusting of the white stuff to our "Dark Olive Metallic" BMW xDrive 30i.

The base xDrive 30i tips the cost scales at $42,450, but our well-optioned tester came it at $57,650 after several special packages were added.

The xDrive 30i gets an inline, four-cylinder, twin-turbo mill that cranks out 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is a respectable 22 mpg city/29 highway/25 combined for the vehicle.

What we have here is the third-generation of the X3. The design is bit more shapely and aggressive that the outgoing model — perhaps to distinguish the bimmer ute in a sea of compact SUVs.

Believe it or not, the X3 has been around since 2003. An SUV of this size, aimed at luxury buyers, wasn't really such a big deal back then. The luxury market still craved sedans.

But BMW was somewhat ahead of the curve. Lucky for them, strong sales of the X3 have kept the brand going while sedan sales decline.

OK, so the snowy eyebrows make the whole front fascia look weird. But the fundamentals are sound.

Streamlined LED headlights? Check. BMW badge? Check. Bold, double-kidney grille? Check. Quietly bold contour lines sweeping back along the hood? Check.

Personally, I think this car is sharp from the front.

7 surprising things that happen to your body when you're pregnant

Pregnant Woman 2

  • Pregnancy comes with a lot of unexpected side effects.
  • Examples include your feet and hair growing and dreaming more.
  • Most of these come and go with very few problems.
  • They're all normal and not cause for concern.

There's something about pregnancy that makes a woman glow. It's one of those well-known side effects of sporting a baby bump.

But there's also a lot of weird, unexpected side effects that come with being pregnant.

Some you may be aware of, and some may take you by surprise.

INSIDER talked to two doctors about some of the changes your body is likely to experience during pregnancy.

You might end up drooling a lot.

This is probably one of the most unpleasant side effects of pregnancy. Dr. Yesenia Blancas, an OBGYN at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center/UT Health, told INSIDER that ptyalism, or increased saliva production, is totally normal, especially for women experiencing morning sickness.

"Feeling nauseated can make you swallow less frequently, and saliva can build up," she explained. To help combat some of the mess, she recommends sucking hard candy or chewing sugarless gum, which can help you swallow the extra saliva.

You'll probably dream more, and your dreams will either be magical or terrifying.

Get ready for some wild nights of dreaming. In fact, your dreams could be so bizarre that you might find yourself dreaming about wild passionate sex one minute, only to find yourself fighting off zombies the next. What gives?

Apparently, those wonderful hormones that fluctuate so much during pregnancy may be to blame. During pregnancy, women's' hormone levels increase, which affects both emotions and the way the brain processes them, leading to more dreams that are often more intense.

Your hair will take on a life of its own.

If you find yourself feeling a bit like Rapunzel, you're not alone. Longer, healthier hair is a common occurrence during pregnancy. While this might be a welcome side effect when it comes to the hair on your head, remember, hair grows all over your body.

The same hormones that are responsible for giving you those beautiful locks are also encouraging hair growth in some not so desirable locations of your body, like your upper lip, your chin, and even your nipples.

Amazon's 26 original TV shows, ranked from worst to best (AMZN)

maisel amazon

Amazon is spending a boatload making TV shows and movies for its Prime service, and was one of the big winners at the 2018 Golden Globes, with two wins for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."

The show's star, Rachel Brosnahan, who goes from 50s housewife to stand-up comic, won the Globe for best actress in a comedy series or musical. The show also won the Globe for best comedy series or musical.

But "Maisel" wasn't Amazon's first hit. The tech giant has carved out a niche for itself in comedies, with "Transparent" and "Mozart in the Jungle" both scoring with critics.

And Amazon is looking to expand beyond that. In November, Amazon paid a reported $250 million to acquire rights to "The Lord of the Rings" series, which it will to turn into a prequel TV show, with plans for spin-offs in the future.

With Amazon's catalog continuing to grow, which shows are worth your time?

To understand how Amazon's shows ranked against each other, we turned to reviews aggregator Metacritic, which pulls in critic (and audience) reviews from all over the world. We excluded shows made for kids, and looked at how the dramas and comedies compared to each other.

Here are Amazon's original shows, ranked based on their critical reception:

Inside the $28,000-a-year private school where children of tech workers learn to become the next Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk

basis independent silicon valley tour 3313

In a San Jose, California, school located inside a former IBM office building, students grades five through 12 take on some of the most rigorous classes offered at any American grade school.

Each student at Basis Independent Silicon Valley takes a minimum of seven AP courses and complete their graduation requirements before senior year, when they embark on capstone classes and independent research. Many go onto top colleges like Stanford and Cornell.

In class, kids develop a mastery of all things STEM. And for some students, the school could just be a stepping stone on their way to becoming the next Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg.

Founded in 2014, Basis Independent Silicon Valley (BISV) belongs to a network of private and charter schools with 28 outposts around the world. Basis was built by a pair of economists, Michael and Olga Block, who struggled to find a school that would provide a rigorous education for their daughter. They opened a charter school in Tucson, Arizona, in 1998 with the belief that the goal of a great education should be to provide students with limitless opportunities.

Business Insider spent a day at BISV to see what it's like to attend.

When students at Basis Independent Silicon Valley tell their friends from other schools where they attend, the most common refrain is, "Why would you do that to yourself?"

BISV is known for holding students to high standards. Most classes are based on the AP curriculum, and there are few honors and no lower-level classes offered.

The school's founders believed that they could cherry-pick "the best practices from the best education systems around the world," and the result would be a generation of students who could compete at the international level, according to Basis Independent CEO Ian Block.

Tuition at BISV costs $27,800 per year for grades five through 12.

10 things you never need to refrigerate

food in refrigerator

Have you ever opened your refrigerator and realized that you couldn't find what you were looking for because it was overflowing with miscellaneous items? If so, you're in good company. The majority of households pack items into the fridge that simply don't need to be there. Here's a list of 10 items you don't need to refrigerate, but are probably taking up room in your fridge right now.

Butter

Consider this: we build homes to keep us warm from the cold. Then, we add refrigerators—large boxes to keep our food cold in our warm homes. And inside our refrigerators are even smaller boxes to keep our butter slightly warmer than the cold box inside our warm home!

Many people assume that butter has to be refrigerated because it's dairy-based. While it's true that butter can go rancid if stored too close to a heat source (such as a too-hot oven) or in direct sunlight, if you store your butter in an opaque butter dish and place it somewhere cool, your butter might outlast the rest of us. In fact, a recent excavation in Ireland uncovered a cache of butter estimated to be almost 3,000 years old!

Butter is also a great compromise item. If you're not 100% sold on leaving it out, just place one stick in the butter dish, and leave the rest in the fridge. That way you can see how fast you use it, and what the best storage solution is for you.

Basil

A delicious herb that enhances almost any dish, basil is often placed in the fridge by well-meaning home cooks. Unfortunately, one of the best aspects of basil — its tendency to blend the smells and tastes of the items around it — also means that storing it in the fridge can cause it to pick up the properties of its shelf-mates.

Instead, keep fresh basil in a little bit of water as if it were a bouquet of freshly cut flowers. It will taste better, look great and may even help keep flies at bay.

Onions

Onions have the opposite problem from basil. Instead of absorbing the odors of other items on the shelf, they tend to lend their aroma to their surroundings, especially when kept in an enclosed area like a refrigerator. Whether you want to keep onions on hand for mixing into a stew or for an easy-to-assemble BBQ kebab, the best place to store them is in a dry area with good ventilation.

Nintendo is doing really, really well — here are the 6 craziest stats that highlight the company's return to dominance

$

Nintendo is doing very, very well right now. Like, super well.

Super Mario Odyssey

So well, in fact, that its 10-month-old console has already outsold its previous one. And the games for that console — the Switch — are moving at a similarly absurd clip.

After Nintendo's latest earnings report, we got a clearer look than ever into exactly how successful Nintendo is right now. The short answer: Extremely. Here are the most absurd numbers we found that highlight Nintendo's return to dominance.

SEE ALSO: Nintendo Switch is on track to sell 20 million units in 2018

1. Seven Switch games published by Nintendo sold over 1 million copies each thus far. And "Super Mario Odyssey" has sold nearly 10 million copies already.

The Nintendo Switch console launched on March 3, 2017. By the end of December, the console had a whopping seven million-plus sellers.

Nintendo had a year full of critical and commercial smash-hits, starting with "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," a major launch game that arrived alongside the Switch on March 3,

In April, "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" debuted — it's now Nintendo's second-best selling Switch game, with 7.33 million units sold worldwide. Approximately half of all Switch owners bought "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe."

That's before we start talking about the absurdly popular "Super Mario Odyssey."

"Odyssey" launched on October 27, 2017. Between then and December 31, 2017, over 9 million units were sold.

2. In less than a year, the Nintendo Switch has outsold the console it replaced. And there are no signs of slowing.

At 14.86 million units, the Switch has now surpassed in sales the console it replaced: Nintendo's ill-fated Wii U.

That's an especially impressive statistic given that the Switch did as much in less than 12 months. For some context, the Wii U launched in 2012 and was sunset in 2017. The Switch has already outpaced the Wii U in sales, and it did it in less than one-fifth of the time.

Nintendo Switch sales vs Wii U sales (Dec. 31, 2017)

That's serious business. The Switch is actually selling faster than Nintendo's Wii, which was itself a runaway success. In fact, it's Nintendo's fastest-selling console ever in the US.

3. Nintendo intentionally stacked the year with big game launches.

In March 2017, it was "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." In April, it was "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe." As 2017 went on, Nintendo's Switch had "ARMS,""Splatoon 2,""Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle," and "Super Mario Odyssey."

In short, the year was full of major Switch games that could only be played on Switch. Better still: Most of those games are very good.

As Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said in a recent investor presentation, "We were able to offer multiple hit titles early on for Nintendo Switch that serve as powerful drivers for hardware sales."

Indeed, Nintendo's strategy of releasing several major games in succession was assuredly responsible for much of the console's success in 2017.

The company has similar plans for 2018, seen here:

"From February onward we will be releasing a wide variety of new software titles one after the next," Kimishima said.

The venue for the 2018 Super Bowl defies traditional sports stadium design — take a look inside

The lucky football fans who snagged tickets for the 2018 Super Bowl will venture inside the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Sunday.

The venue does not look like a typical stadium.

Its design follows the style of modern architecture, characterized by geometric forms, glass-steel-and-concrete construction, and an efficient use of space. The stadium's roof is also partially made of a special plastic film, which helps the interior remain a comfortable temperature during all seasons.

Business Insider spoke with Lance Evans, the venue's lead architect, about the design.

At the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles will play for the 2018 Super Bowl.

Completed in 2016, the downtown venue features a glass facade with sharp lines.

Visitors will enter through 95-foot-tall, 55-foot-wide pivoting doors, the largest in the world.

The building was designed by HKS Architects, the same firm behind the stadiums where the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, and Los Angeles Rams play.

The best workout clothes for women

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

workout 4x3

The Insider Pick:

  • With the right clothes, you’ll actually want to get to the gym and show off your style before meeting friends for a much-deserved drink afterward. Sweaty Betty makes our favorite workout gear for women that’s as functional as it is fashion-forward.

Faking it until you make it becomes a lot easier when you look the part. So when it comes to feigning enjoyment at the gym, you’re going to need some gear to get yourself in character. Luckily, there are plenty of options these days to help you look as though you’re ready for the toughest kickboxing session, because who better to motivate you than the person staring back at you in the mirror?

One of our favorite aspects of today’s workout gear for women is that it’s no longer relegated to the spinning studio or the weight room. Rather, some of our favorite options will take you from barre class to the neighborhood bar, and have the technology to ensure that you don’t have to worry about sweat stains or smells when you make that transition. With moisture-wicking fabric, cleverly-placed mesh panels, and thoughtful cut-outs, much of today’s athletic clothing is truly meant for athletic pursuits. It’s a far cry from our days of grabbing the oldest shirt in our closet, cutting off the sleeves, and calling it a top.

When it comes to figuring out what workout gear will best suit your needs, listen to your body. After all, it’ll be your primary tool during your workouts, so if you’re uncomfortable in any way, everything else is moot. You’ll also want to consider the type of workout you’re most likely to engage in. If you prefer running to yoga, you’ll be in need of different support.

You’ll also want to keep durability in mind. You’re not only putting your workout gear through the ringer at the gym, but you’re also going to be putting it through the laundry quite a few times. So even if you’re able to save a few dollars on the initial purpose by buying something that’s a bit flimsier, you’ll have to exercise your credit card again when you find your gear starting to rip after a few cycles.

Finally, of course, price comes into consideration. Given that most workout gear doubles as everyday attire these days, you can (to some extent) think of these pieces as serving two purposes for the price of one. That said, there are some options that are more costly than others, so your budget may be a determining factor.

Read on in the slides below to learn why Sweaty Betty makes our favorite workout clothes and why you might also like workout clothes by ADAYLive the Process, Vuori, BandierNike, and Old Navy.

The best workout clothes overall

Why you'll love it: Sweaty Betty makes workout gear that can withstand a tough time at the gym and take you out into society without breaking a sweat.

Much of today’s workout gear seems so focused on taking you seamlessly from barre to the bar that it forgets its primary function — being functional during your workout. But that is certainly not the case with Sweaty Betty.

As this brand’s name suggests, you’ll be able to perspire in these workout clothes without getting uncomfortable, and more importantly, you’ll feel supported throughout your time at the gym.

Sweaty Betty’s Zero Gravity leggings are made of ultra-lightweight Italian fabric, which is both sweat-wicking and quick drying for even your most intense sessions. Plus, the leggings are muscle-compressing to help you get even more out of your workout. They’re great for just about any type of exercise, whether you prefer to spend your time spinning or doing a HIIT class.

And while all those squats will certainly help shape your bum, so too will these leggings. A super satisfied customer gave a five-star review, commending the “very flattering” print and the pocket that is perfect for holding your smartphone during your run.

When paired with the High-Intensity Run Bra, you’ll feel prepared to spend your whole day actively. The high support sports bra features sweat-wicking fabric, and more importantly, extremely comfortable soft padded straps that won’t bite into sensitive skin. While some “sports” bras seem suitable only for rather anaerobic activities, the High Intensity Run Bra was designed for running and HIIT workouts. Popsugar also calls this bra one of the best for women with larger busts.

Both pieces are sleek and stylish but don’t sacrifice their usefulness for the sake of aesthetics. Sweaty Betty also makes our favorite running tights for the gym and many other great leggings and sport bras.

Pros: Quick drying material, snug fit, great for any type of workout

Cons: Some customers found that the High Intensity Run Bra does not provide enough side coverage

The best workout clothes that fit in at the office

Why you'll love it: Workout clothes from ADAY look just as appropriate for the office as they do for your morning yoga session.

If you don’t want to carry around three outfits for before, during, and after the gym, ADAY may be the solution for you. The Smoke It Up Bra and Crop And Roll Leggings can be worn in just about any scenario.

ADAY is all about simplicity and seeks to create fabrics and clothing that are multipurpose, long-lasting, and sustainable. The Crop And Roll are the best if you’re looking for something to take to your workout. Made of material that is quick drying, sweating wicking, sun cream and oil resistant, these leggings also feature an elastic waistband with an adjuster that can make the fit tighter or looser.

Thanks to the slightly cropped length, you won’t feel encumbered as you run, duck, and jump. But once you’re done at the gym, simply pair these leggings with a nice pair of pumps, and they’ll be ready for the office. With details like the gunmetal snaps, these leggings are just as much a statement piece as they are sweat-appropriate.

The Today Show called ADAY leggings “trendy” but “incredibly functional,” while Refinery 29 said simply, “straight up, they look really good.”

The Smoke It Up Bra is made of an Italian fabric that wicks moisture, and also features mesh panels for extra breathability. If you always find yourself dabbing at your cleavage, this may be the choice for you. I’m particularly taken by the A-shaped cutout in the back — not only does it help alleviate heat buildup, but it’s also an attractive design detail.

Really, this is one sports bra you wouldn’t mind to have peeking through your shirt. As Huffington Post noted, this bra’s “fashionable back details ... make it perfect for layering under regular clothes.”

Pros: Comfortable, versatile, with many neutral color options for a wide range of occasions

Cons: The Smoke It Up Bra only offers medium support

The best workout gear for the ethical yogi

Why you'll love it: Live the Process’ workout gear is not only comfortable, but it’s eco-friendly, too.

Live the Process produces simple, beautiful clothes that just might kickstart your entire wellness journey. Founded by a certified yoga instructor, Live the Process isn’t so much a clothing store as it is a wellness brand.

Despite its relatively new status on the scene (it launched just a few years ago in 2014), it’s already a mainstay in a number of retailers across the country (and the web), including Barney’s and Net-a-Porter.

All of Live the Process’ pieces are ethically produced in the United States, and the company promises to employ careful practices throughout the supply chain to reduce its environmental impact, including using recycled (and recyclable) packaging and carbon-neutral shipping. So not only will you look and feel good in your workout clothes, but you’ll feel good about yourself, too.

Live the Process’ Bra is a classic and classy answer to the traditional sports bra, providing full coverage across both your chest and your back.

The leggings are certainly great to wear to the gym, but you’ll also want to wear them all day long. Indeed, founder Robyn Berkley told the Observer, all of Live the Process’ clothes are meant to “make you feel beautiful and motivated,” not distract you with unnecessary bells and whistles.

Customers have sung the praises of the wellness brand as well, particularly calling out the “very good quality” of the bra and leggings’ material, which has four-way stretch, is breathable, moisture wicking, and water and wind repellent.

Pros: Simple, clean lines with straightforward design and serious comfort

Cons: These are pricey articles of clothing, even if you are looking to go from the gym to the office
